Re: [slim] Is it safe to buy the newly released Duet ?

2008-02-27 Thread slimpy

It doesn't matter if you buy today or in a couple of weeks.
If there are hardware defects that made it through the beta test and
into the final product it won't be just a matter of weeks until they're
fixed.
In today's appliances a lot of things can be controlled from firmware.
Bugs in the firmware are far more likely than any undetected hardware
bugs.
A new product is always more prone to bugs than one that has been on
the market for a long time. Simply because a long running product has
had enough time to get all initial bugs detected and fixed.

[slim] Is it safe to buy the newly released Duet ?

2008-02-27 Thread AlexV

Maybe it's just me... But I always feel kinda nervous buying a brand new
product.

What if bugs are present in the hardware ? No firmware can address
that, right ?

Do you feel it's safer to wait a few weeks ? Or am I totally paranoid ?

Certainly the TP has a field programmable gate array, so to a degree
even the 'hardware' can be updated after manufacture. The SB/SBC may
have the same.

Re: [slim] Is it safe to buy the newly released Duet ?

2008-02-27 Thread Mark Lanctot

The SBR shares most of its hardware with the SB3 and the SB2. The SB2
was released in April 2005.

The codecs and some functions are all done in a field programmable gate
array. So there's a whole lot that's reprogrammable.

Also - the SBC and SBR have been through a very intensive beta test
process that saw beta and then pre-production units in the hands of
real-world users that bashed away at it. AFAIK, this was never done in
the Slim Devices days, so the SB2, SB3 and TP were never this
extensively tested.

Is there any reason the 30 day guarantee will not apply to the duet?

The 30-day guarantee will absolutely apply to all Duets bought from our
online store. If you buy it elsewhere, you will have to deal with your
retailer's return/guarantee policy.

Our guarantee period starts when you receive the item on your
doorstep.

I've been bashing away on Controller for months, and the Receiver for
about a month. I've not seen any bugs recently.

Mark's phrase very intensive beta test is correct.

I can't say what you will think, but I think they are great.

Hey Alex - I feel safer buying a new SD product than almost anything on
the market...I've done it 3 times so far with no problems at all. The
thing is - you can see the beta program online! - Not many other
products have that sort of inbuilt confidence factor - I'd say go for
it!

Alex you should wait at least a year so the rest of us can get our
Duets now! Most companies are not going to release an electronic
product with known bugs or problems. What company wants that
headache? It is MHO that the firmware, SqueezeNetwork and SqueezeCenter
are the only things holding up shipping of product. They are probably
pallets loaded with Duets waiting for the word that all Firmware and SC
7.0 is a go so ship them!

Note: I am not speaking for Logitech, these are my thoughts on the
subject. Hardware is ready, waiting on Firmware and SC 7.0 to be
pronounced Gold (production ready not Beta).

My experience with Slim Devices releases (going back to the SB1, and
some of the relatively disastrous SlimServer releases) is that when it
first comes out, it'll be really great, but will have a surprisingly
large number of minor bugs. But they'll get fixed, and your Squeezebox
will get better and better over time.

Of course, it's also possible that the Logitech acquisition has given
Slim some additional QA resources, and that the Duet will be more
polished and complete than some other releases, so we'll see, I guess.
