Eh? I pointed out that toby10's suggestion, taken at face value, would
probably make more of a difference to sound quality than your
suggestion. I really fail to see how that could be seen as defending
Trump, unless you were projecting and actually subscribing to the whole
"fake news" way of rejecting facts.

That's not how WiFi works, moving the server to 5 GHz will not affect
the signal strength to your Touches in any way.
Your Touches clearly had sufficient connection (signal level and data
rate) before the changes you made, otherwise they would have been pretty
much unusable with music cutting out at irregular intervals. Any
improvement over a level that is "good enough" will make the connection
more robust, but it will not make any change to what the Touch receives
and hence no change to its output.

I can't argue with the test results, but I guess bumping up to 5G
allowed less traffic and better signal strength for all my Touches in
the house (all are connected at 80% or higher since the change). All I
know its sounding better and that was the only change made to the
system.

2017-08-07 Thread Mnyb

On the original topic .

30-50% wifi strength is not good enough it's till marginal close to 100%
is reliable .

LMS does not measure this in a good way I would say 50% is not good .

Bite the bullet and pull some Ethernet wires through the house .

On that other topic, no network topology does not make any difference on
a squeezebox as long as the player buffer is full .

Archie made some measurements using my old server , when it worked
transfer music from Sweden to Canada to his Transporter did not cause
any problem that's just how it works .

"Expectation bias" is much more subtle and pervasive than you're giving
it credit. If you're interested in understanding it better, I suggest
you start with the link I provided.

Or not. I have no problem with you believing that a change of network
card has caused your Squeezeboxes to sound better. My problem is with
you recommending that others follow your lead for a "cheapish upgrade to
your system to improve your sound quality". There is absolutely no
reason to expect a change from 2.4G to 5G on any component in your
network will give the results you claim.

It wasn't the router, but the server I added an 5 G adapter, the router

Actually think the internet would be a saner place if all texts
containing "s*und st*ge" would be quietly sent to /dev/null.
I mean, is it really a thing? Is it ever used in any meaningful
context?

And if someone actually believed the stuff, hooking up the server to 5
GHz isn't "putting out more bandwidth" to any Squeezeboxes, for a number
of reasons it will be exactly the same.

Glad this worked out for you, but there is no reason for anyone to
expect the introduction of a 5G wireless router will improve the sound
quality of their Squeezeboxes. You might believe you hear a "bigger
sound stage and more depth", but I suggest this is due to your
expectation of the results rather than to any real result. Valid as
this might be to you personally, it's not an adequate basis for
recommending that others follow a similar path to the same result.

Re: [slim] Improving Wireless Strength on the Squeezebox

2017-08-05 Thread Recoveryone

This was the only thread I could find concerning wifi traffic, so I am
posting this little info here.

My Verizon/Frontier router took a dump recently and I order a new one.
With the growing number of wifi devices in my home (30 +) I needed to
start dividing up the devices to cut down on the strain on the 2 G
signal. My router like most newer ones put out a dual signal, 2.4 G and
5 G, So I made sure all the devices I had that support 5 G would be on
that signal. My server in the garage had a older 2 G adapter on it, so
I purchased a 5 G to help relieve the strain. The unintentional bonus
using the 5 G on the server was a bigger sound stage and more depth in
my music. After thinking on this, it makes good sense as the 5 G is
putting out more bandwidth to my squeezebox touches. We all known being
hardwire is best, put like most my home was not built with network
sockets in all the outlets, so wifi is the only way to stream. This
could be about the cheapish upgrade to your system to improve your sound
quality.
