Hi all, having considered all your excellent advice I decided to go the
Max2Play route and I'm stunned with the result - the sound is ( and I
hate to say it ) as good or better than my TP - ok it doesn't look very
nice but I don't really care about that - incredible little DAC and very
capable Pi
I use a Raspi with max2play + HiFiBerry Digi > DAC as my main system
player, and a Raspi with max2play + HiFiBerry DAC+ as LMS server and
player in my study.
Dead easy to set up, choice of DAC cards as mentioned by Giza2020 in pic
below.

Max2play has a lot of the built in drivers and settings for hifiberry
products..lots of options in drop down fields.

I totally agree with Jeff.
piCorePlayer for a player - runs entirely in RAM (no moving parts to
break)
max2play for a server / player.
Using piCorePlayer particularly it is easy to just reflash the microSD
and start again as it only takes minutes to set up from scratch.
The same is true for max

Ah if it' a rpi2B then I would guess that jessie should just respond to
the SSH routine.
I presume the driver for the dac board is in the kernel.
It's not poss to use

working, I am impressed so far but have a few questions
1) The playback volume is quite a bit lower than my TP ( it's like when
you forget to set the volume to fixed 100 % on the web server interface
) how do I set it to 100% ?
