Juste a 1st comment about the cover: the title "Writer Guide" is way too 
small wrt the big "6.0" underneath. I'd appreciate the title to be in a 
bigger font size (and, perhaps, in bold) while the "6.0" should be 
reduced a little.

Yes, this is certainly a route I didn't think of in the first place. I 
can create extensions so this is a valid option. Anyway, the document I 
uploaded will have a working button to "install" (copy the libraries to 
MyMacros) which seems simple enough to me for the time being (the button 
is there but not yet connected to the install macro which I haven't 
finished). The extension suggestion is still a suggestion I'll keep in 
mind. Thanks!

I've created and validated an account but can't seem to connect :(

In fact, the connexion is made but I can't go any further. This seems to 
be a cookie thing as I've read on the login help page but I don't 
understand where the glitch is: Firefox is set to accept site cookies 
forever, I've disabled the cookies manager so that they are accepted, 
I've also disabled https-everywhere so that http can be used, to no 
avail: I get a "user couldn't be identified" message and a captcha, then 
a "connect using pluggableauth" button (whats that?) and... nothing.


This is very frustrating. Even disabling all security tools (adblock, 
ghostery), I'm still locked out.



Any idea?

Hi!

I don't know to whom to apply, so let's go for documentation ;)
Thanks to redirect me to the correct address if needed.


I've been developping LibreOffice macros in Basic (mainly for Calc, a 
little for Writer) for quite a while now. During the development of my 
own macros I've built a corpus of what I call "primitives". It's a set 
of subs and functions that I use over and over again within the tools I 
produce. Thus many (but not all) are tested IRL for real projects.


This primitive set is bound into a single document, in a structured 
library tree and with an accompanying description text (as comments and 
as Writer documentation). All code and documentation is in English.


While those primitives are mostly my own work, I've collected a few in 
fora or on various web sites where people kindly show their own 
discoveries (authors and sources are always cited in this case).


Though this is a permanent work-in-progress, as you can imagine, I'm 
willing to give it to the community for examination and to attract more 
contributions. The current license is CC-BY but I'm not sure CC is 
appropriate for code.


Of course, there's much to do to improve things as they are currently: a 
more extensive documentation, more usage examples, etc. I always take 
care that such developments be as professional as possible, so I've 
adopted a standard coding style and take great care to items naming. The 
said Writer document is still sparse at times, because I haven't got 
time enough to fill all the gaps...


Any pointer to where/whom I could post this document in order to check 
it and give it away?

[libreoffice-documentation] Basic Macros RefCards

Hello,

for my professional needs (giving away RefCards during training 
sessions), I have created a set of 8 refcards/cheatsheets related to 
LibreOffice macros in Basic.


Here's the list:
1 - IDE
2 - Basic - Overview
3 - Calc
4 - Events
5 - Runtime Library
6 - Dialogs
7 - Files
8 - Execution parameters

I've placed them under a CC-BY-SA 4 license.

Each comes as a single A4 document written using Writer of course (I 
usually print them on 170g paper).


"Unfortunately" (sigh), these documents are written in French. At "lost" 
time, I've translated the first two of them, though (a third one is on 
the workbench, dunno when it is done).


Should these documents be of interest, where could I upload them?

Petite question pour laquelle je ne me souviens pas avoir vu de réponse:
Il y a souvent des dénominations en anglais qui seraient traduisibles,
bien que le terme anglais soit généralement utilisé dans les autres
langues. Je pense au nom des polices de caractères par exemple.


Les noms des polices sont clairement à ne pas traduire car ce sont des 
marques.




Pour la version française, quelle convention adopte-t-on?

 1. On "francise" tout (tant que possible, parce que tous les termes ne
sont pas traduisibles)?
 2. On traduit le plus possible et on laisse le terme anglais comme
référence à côté (entre parenthèses)?
 3. Ou l'inverse: on laisse tout en anglais et on met la traduction en
français à côté quand cela a du sens?

Personnellement, j'opterais pour la dernière option, même si ce n'est
pas la plus francophile...

Aussi, je laisse en jaune les passages pour lesquels j'ai un doute
sérieux sur ma traduction...


En ce qui me concerne, il m'arrive d'avoir des pbs de traduction. Dans 
ce cas, je laisse entre [] la phrase en anglais et j'ajoute un 
commentaire dans le document pour discussion ultérieure.


Bon, je n'ai pas vraiment répondu ni choisi entre 1 2 et 3. Mais de 
toutes façons en cas de difficulté, tu peux poser la question à la liste.

j'ai traduit les annexes, le chap.16 et qq bricoles périphériques.

Notez que :
-- la seule modif que je fasse en terme de styles est de passer la 
langue des paragraphes en Français (France).

-- le titre reste à traduire
-- les puces ne me plaisent qu'à moitié (pas typographiquement 
orthodoxes en français)

Styles are the cornerstone of text processing. The software itself 
should emphasize that. Dunno where it comes from, but I like this 
sentence which says it all: If you don't use styles, the text processor 
sees the characters. When using styles, the software understands the 
document. (cited from the top of my mind)


I'm eager to see that book come to daylight as the lack of information 
in that matter bugs me for a very long time. BTW, a few years ago, I'd 
written a 50 pages doc about this very topic for the FR OOo 
documentation [1].


Though my time is still very sparse, I'd be more than happy to have a 
glance at Bruce's book.

Not that I know of. I have tried several key combinations including the 
Del key, without success.

You've got the how-to answer in msgs from Jean and Tom.

For the percentage vs point value, here's the point: a percentage value 
allows to change the parent style font size and all children styles 
fonts are updated with the same proportion. A point value is just a 
fixed value which makes much more difficult to adjust the children fonts 
sizes. This is why I'd encourage anyone using paragraph styles to keep 
the percentage thingies :)

Think so.

Like Mark, I think there are two uses of internet questionning:

1. One-shot questions

John Doe often has a question s-he wants to solve right now. In this 
POV, mailing lists are often bothering the casual questionner: necessity 
to subscribe, overflooded mailbox because of a lack of knowledge of what 
a mailing list is, difficulty to unsubscribe, etc.


2. Long-term discussions

A mailing list brings the messages directly to the personnal mailer, 
where they can be read and kept for as long as necessary for future 
reference. Moreover, the mailer software allows for sorting and 
organizing the threads.



To jump on Mark's shoulders (if he doesn't mind ;), and WRT this 
*documentation* list, I see two uses:


-- the casual questions is there a doc about Base? which resorts to a 
forum. The question at hand being: do we need a forum for that alone? 
IOW, would a general purpose forum not fit the bill? Side note: 
shouldn't this be clearly answered on the web pages?


-- the long run discussions about a doc in progress, which, IMO, better 
belongs to a mailing list such as this one.



So, as you guessed, my opinion *about documentation* is to keep the list 
as it is now and not have a forum at all.

The latter is simpler but can't bring all the power of the chaining, ie, 
paragraph spacing, as you mention.
The former is more complex and very few people would use that. the 
others wouldn't understand the actual benefits for using it.

I've never used FrameMaker, though I hear many positive comments about 
it on the LibO lists.



Any way, I started drafting
some general-purpose conditional-text templates a few weeks ago, whereby
various conditions would be covered--print docs, online docs, MS Word
migrations (using similar terminology for style names that Word users
would typically use), among others. To save my time, I based them upon
OOo/LO templates that I had a hand in drafting since 2006.

Yes, this is the primary option. In any case, the target is to minimize 
the style change when changing target. For the same reason, I always 
prefer relative font sizes (%) over absolute values (pt).




Lastly, I would test how their ODT outputs would convert into EPUB files
by calibre (lowercase, as some on LO believe it is Calibre...). Also, I
am working on a style guide (US English emphasis, with examples),
adapting from various style guides in use at various US universities,
etc. When I achieve more critical mass with what I got, they will be
posted on my website, and anybody can use them or not, as they wish.

Here's the structure of the catalog sheet:

-- Settings: the style settings *if and only if* they differ from the parent
-- UseCase: use cases, from the documentation available (tbd)
-- Questions: some questions that raised while cataloging. Many are pending.
-- NewStyle: a new style alternative, if available now (tbd)

I'll go on entering information in the catalog (ie, use cases, 
questions). In the meantime we could start discussing. IMO, the first 
points to be discussed:


-- do we need a naming convention (see also previous Dan's message: 
Some suggestions for those beginning work on an updated chapter 
template)? If yes, which?


-- global styles family: should we adopt an Object-Oriented mind and 
first set a bunch of abstract styles from which the actual styles 
would be derived? If so, arrange the styles into families/branches. Then 
define the abstract styles.


-- should we keep in mind a dual template approach: display-only and 
printed matter templates?

documentation templates? BTW, the styles cataloging is on my workbench 
for a few days now. I hope that, as a first step, I can get a styles 
dependencies map by to-morrow. (I'll open a new thread on due time)

I assume, the styles reside all in the Document Template. So what you propose
is cleaning up the Document template, I'd say.


I didn't remember of the existence of that template (and dunno where it

That's ok for one document.

But remember, there are lots of template based documents in the Documentation
area! E.g. the German translations are based on somewhat different styles with
completely different names. With a macro one could quickly list all the styles
used in that particular document, so comparison would be a lot quicker/easier.



Yes, sure (I have a zero-knowledge wrt to macros and don't want to put 
my toes into that; some kind of an allergy I'd say). I also know the FR 
community have their own styles when they translate the guides (eg, they 
convert OOoXxxx into LibOXxxx). Anyway, we have to start somewhere and, 
to me, the basis is the international documentation.


I can see the documentation styles and templates workflow as:

1. Create a catalog of the styles present in the documentation
There are
(a) stock styles (very few)
(b) custom styles (many)

2. Analyse the naming
(a) collisions-like
(b) names too close between categories
(c) ambiguous names
(d) non-fonctional names

3. Analyse the uses for styles

4. Propose a move
(a) Styles that would go from custom to stock
(b) Custom styles to rename for better understanding
(c) Custom styles to leave alone

5. Document the move
So that documentation writers know what's up.

6. Do the move.
(a) Create the new template-s
(b) Convert the guides


Ouch.

Just curious here, but ...
Doing a search or a search and replace looking for the apostrophe used
in 'contractions' like 'we'll', returns no hits, even when I'm sitting
three lines above one. It finds the 'we', and it finds the 'll', but not
the whole word, nor the apostrophe alone. Over-typing the apostrophe and
doing the search finds it ok.
So I was just curious about what character is used for the apostrophe in
the documents, if it's not U+0027.
As I said, just curious.


FYI, during the documentation styles cataloging I've started a few hours 
ago, I've noticed that not all paragraph styles have the same language 
defined. Some have EN (USA) while others have EN (Aus). Could this 
language thingy play the trick you're noticing?


Note also, that the FR apostrophe, for instance, is not U+0027 but 
U+2019. BTW, this can be (un)set in Tools / Autocorrect options / 
Localized Options, Single quotes.

suggestions. Though, this effort is not worth right now, because of the 
new features that should be introduced into LibO v.3.5 wrt styles. When 
this version is out, I'm ok for some work into that matter.

Hi,

I'm at a loss about the styles names and use in LibO docs (I'm referring 
here to 
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/f/f5/0101GS3-IntroducingLibO.odt, 
but the same goes to others)


I'm wondering why the styles used are OOoSomeNewStyle while predefined 
styles already exist for the same purpose in the software (eg: 
OOoTextBody vs pre-defined TextBody)


I think the current naming scheme is faulty and that this important 
drawback should be addressed.


The problem I see here is interoperability. This pilar of Free Software 
is very welcome into our office automation tools. This way, our 
documents can be transferred everywhere and used by anyone, the style 
name being translated and meaningful to the reader (eg: the paragraph 
style Heading 1 in English is Titre 1 in French).


- Any non-standard expression is a source of misunderstanding.
- Any non-standard naming can't be easily translated.


The second drawback is much worse. If I want to display documents using 
my own style sheets, I can configure any pre-defined style to fit my 
needs or desires and create my own templates (this is basic styles and 
templates use). This way, when I get a document from anywhere, I can be 
sure it will look the way *I* want.


- Any non-standard naming defeats in-house rules.


I'm sure there's some reason why the obscure OOoSomeNewStyle scheme has 
been adopted but I can't see any explanation that would overrule the two 
problems above.


Also, we must be aware that the documents we produce here are to be used 
as good practice examples by our audience. Anytime I teach Writer, I 
emphasize on styles and good practices about them. Having official 
documents (well, there's the TDF logo somewhere, right?) that don't 
actually apply such good practices is bad teaching.



Can anyone with a long experience explain this naming thingy?

Because of the problems listed above, I think we should review the 
documents styles and adopt the predefined styles wherever they are 
concerned, additional styles being introduced very sparingly.

This is good news!

Just a comment about what I think is the front cover: the big fat black 
borders are really, but really awful. I know this mimics the LibO icon 
but, well, printed matter is not screen rendition, is it? The black 
borders make me feel like it is a death notice of some sort. IMO it 
should be replaced with some lighter colour, a light grey could do, I 
think.


Just my 2 (euro)cents. Keep up the good job, team!

Exactly the same here ... go for it Jean ... if you are willing do please
try to write it in english, we can give it a uplift if  you can send our way
even a bad translation (because I will put your french version through a
Google-Translate if you don't have the time ... and take it from there)
besides you underestimate your english, it is quite good for tech writing.


Thanks to both for your kind words. Writing on a message board is a 
thing, writing a comprehensive document is really a whole other matter.


Anyway, I'll do my best and provide something in my English asap :) so 
that the folks lurking here may review, correct and rephrase.

This is currently on my plate... The very beginning (part 1 to the Calc 
and text import thingy) is already written (in French :( but needs some 
rethinking and/or rewording.


As for an English version... well, as you might guess English is not my 
mother language which means I can write some sentences but the wording 
won't be on par with what a true native would express. All this to say 
there's a lot to be done.


Also, I'm ok to share what I've got so far (in French!) and go on with 
anyone interested.

I find this to be a *very* good tutorial. A little too deep for a

As of a Base tutorial for beginners, here's the outline I'm thinking of:

-- How to devise a database
-- Introduction to Base

-- Importing data from Calc and delimited text files
-- Querying a DB in interactive mode (not so sure about the English 
wording here as I've got the French version installed)

-- Querying a DB using SQL
-- Useful tools (Sun/Oracle Report Builder, MySQLworkbench)
-- Reporting with S/ORB
-- Using Base as a front-end for MySQL (MySQLconnector extension) and 
PostgreSQL (SDBC)


This contents is what I currently intend to stuff into a series of 
in-house training I'm planning. I reckon this outline to be quite 
progressive and, from my experience, seems to be what newcomers want.

I have printed a copy on US lettre and of course it doesn't fit
properly, but, it looks like p.1 could be squeezed a bit to make that
side p. 5,6,1 work both in A4 and US letter. T

Side 2 looks more problematic, I don't know if all 3 pages could be
squeezed enough to fit a US letter size properly. It may have to be
reworked.

If your proof of concept could be printed out on both A4/US letter, this
would also be a clear winner.


From this page: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_216 (in French) it 
appears the landscape use should be kept within a printed zone of 237 x 
174 mm to be A4 and US letter compliant. I'll rework the QRC starting 
from these recommendations and keep the group posted.




If you work this out in Français, I could test it out here on US letter
(Canada).


OK. Where should I upload the drafts? At this moment, I can't give any 
timeframe but I'll do my best to be as fast as possible :)


IMO, we should all switch to A4 the world over. (sigh)
