It should do, however:

thunderbird -P

This will make Thunderbird open the profile manager where you can chose
which profile to use and create a new one.

No that is an older one which has been resolved.

What I was hoping to do was something along the lines off:

Make a copy current profile, rename it backup and store it out of the
way for safety

Move existing old profile from home folder and save it to a new location
on PC, make sure there is no other profiles available to Thunderbird,
then restart Thunderbird

If Thunderbird can not find a profile it "should" make a new one

Then simply go into Thunderbird >> Tools >> Import the point the import
to where the I stored the copy of the profile and let it import all the
settings and emails (3 accounts with many sub folders).

Due to being unemployed, I need to keep my email working hence the
reason for the question. I don't want to attempt this until I am 100%
certain I know whatever it is I do will work.

That's two translations, and two chances of corrupting the emails. Even
for mbox format there are four main variations with minor deviations.
It would seem safer to not need to alter the file contents at all.

As an experiment, as I have four email profiles in T-Bird and had just
about retired one, I exported my xx.netscape inbox and imported it into
my xx.yahoo inbox and it all worked successfully, up to a point. There
were 16 emails in the inbox to be exported, and there are 21 in the
imported inbox, with  the exported 15 showing as not read.

The import/export tools has an option to export/import profiles I just
noticed.

Cheers, Peter

PS: Now to empty that retired email profile again!
