Information and guidance sort on character encoding in Thunderbird and
Ubuntu 9.10. (may not just apply on e-mail programs).
For some reason I've started getting strange characters appearing in
some e-mails, a black diamond with a ? mark in the centre.
Now my encoding was set to Unicode UTF-8.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and can now up-grade via Update Manager to 10.04
but need to confirm:-
I have 3 separate partitions for Ubuntu, Linux swap and /Home.
When upgrading the system am I correct that I can just upgrade Ubuntu
system (sda3), then point to '/Home' (sda5) when requested ensuring

Just looking into possible purchase of a projector for use on my Linux
machines.
Requirements are:-
Simple to operate
Able to work in a medium sized hall with limited blackout facilities and
at home
Inputs from VGA, sRGB, Video. HDMI, USB (would be nice)
Brightness 2000+
Contrast
' partition,
along the lines of 'cannot make 17th partition'.
Installation has produced the '/' and swap partitions but fails on
/Home. (Linux is on the second disk)
Any ideas please.
I've suggested he joins DLUG and come to the next meeting!

(I'm well out of touch with M$ now).
If all else fails he'll have to come here and use my Linux laptop with
Gimp but it will not be easy without his wife finding out (Christmas
present!!).

I don't think virus' are a problem but would like confirmation please,

on disk and checked permissions tab; reports are
'permissions not available' or word to that effect.
How do I make the disk available to any person or machine please? At the
moment it's a useless block!
Not had this before when formatting a HD. Is it 'ROOT' that's the problem?

all appears to go well but after it is finished the folder shows no
sub-folders or files! Empty. tried this 4 times in various ways.
Is there a maximum number of folders you can have in a partition? Is
this the problem?
