[DQSD-Users] Promoting DQSD

2006-07-13 Thread James Robertson
The BBC run a TV show called Click - http://www.bbc.co.uk/click/

and a couple of weeks ago they ran a piece on search engine toolbars, and
followed it up last week with a bit more. I've emailed them saying how
wonderful DQSD is and how it doesn't try to hijack any browser features, has
hundreds of built-in searches, and is this amazing tiny little box on my task
bar etc. etc., but if anybody else would like to add more support to try and
get them to mention DQSD on the show then their email address is: [EMAIL
PROTECTED] or just use the Contact us link at the bottom of the program home
page (above).

Saying that your an avid viewer of the show from (whichever country) via the
BBC News Player (click on the link on the right of the program homepage, above)
might also help a bit :)

Cheers.

[DQSD-Users] Re: DQSD-Users digest, Vol 1 #838 - 7 msgs

2006-03-29 Thread James Robertson
I checked in a Companies House search probably a year
or two ago (should be ch.xml) which has been crippled
by them including a session key that I can't work
around. No amount of moaning at the relevant people
could get the addition of a session key after a query
is posted, so the search is officially broken.

It might as well be deleted :(

[DQSD-Users] Re: notesbydave.com down?

2005-01-07 Thread James Robertson
Kim/Monty -

My office NT4 box doesn't give an Add Quick Search
type option in the toolbar after installing DQSD.

And I finally woke from my post-Christmas
semi-comatose state and realised that (as Kim also
mentioned) the Error is due to the remote site
wanting to affect the local zone, so it needs to be a
trusted site to be able to do it.

So instructions might be something along the lines of:
In IE Internet Options|Security|Trusted Sites add
http://www.dqsd.net/install.htm and hit Apply

Then in the toobar right-click, go to Toolbars|New
toolbar... and enter http://www.dqsd.net/install.htm
(or installd.htm / installe.htm if DQSD is installed
onto the D or E drives) as the address to install
from, hit OK and wait a few seconds.

Then (optionally) once the search bar has appeared in
your toolbar, in IE Internet Options|Security|Trusted
Sites select http://www.dqsd.net/install.htm, click on
Remove and hit OK

I've tried using local file addresses as the adress to
install from and it never seems to work - it seems to
need the script command in the install.htm files. So
the URL at Step 3 does need to be a URL, although the
instructions need to include the Trusted Zone steps as
well.

[DQSD-Users] notesbydave.com down?

2005-01-04 Thread James Robertson
Just tried installing DQSD 3.1.9 onto my WinNT4 SP6
machine with Firefox as default browser and
encountered a few problems. So after uninstalling
(BTW, the uninstaller deletes *all* the files in the
Quick Search Deskbar directory, including any files
added after the install - I had a backup folder of
localprefs.js etc. Luckily I had another copy
elsewhere :), but it might catch other people out...)
I tried re-installing 3.1.8 and then using the
http://notesbydave.com/toolbar/install.htm URL to get
the DQSD toolbar up and running.

However, the notesbydave.com URL seems to be down -
pinging gives an IP of 68.80.225.136 but it timed out
on returning packets.

Is there anywhere else that we've got that hosts the
install scripts?

TIA

[DQSD-Users] DQSD + Firefox

2004-09-28 Thread James Robertson
I've just started using Firefox (1.0 PR) over the last
few days and I've got to say that it's pretty darned
great. Some really nice plugins for it as well.

However, I'm wondering if any other Firefox users can
help - is there any way of ensuring that *all* of the
DQSD windows open in the same Firefox window (i.e.
open as new tabs)?

I've got my localprefs set so that:
reuseBrowserWindowMode = 1;
launchmode=2;

which results in searches opening in new tabs within a
single Firefox window, but for example entering URLs
to be opened or using aliases opens a new instance of
Firefox rather than opening in a new tab.

I've got the Single Window extension/plugin
installed and set to:
Enable single window mode
Open external links in new tabs
Open links with invalid targets in new tabs
Open JavaScript links in new tabs

Any suggestions?

TIA

RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD and Windows XP SP2

2004-09-05 Thread James Robertson
Kim -

I hadn't appreciated the DQSD architecture issues,
especially with it already being hosted by the taskbar
process. I've got to say that it amazes me that
there's not any clear way of addresing the issue.
Personally, I might go back to XP SP1 - SP2 has
crippled my digital radio and nobody's come up with a
workaround for that yet (heck... we were already
having to force Win2k USB drivers into XP, and SP2 has
just blown it away completely).

However, that doesn't address the bigger issue - DQSD
is a fantastic utility, and it would be terrible for
it to be made useless on all new machines, or at least
for it to require them to have registry hacks and for
annoying pop-ups to appear every time a favourite
search is called.

DQSD is the kind of application I want my dad to use
(and I think that he qualifies as an average home
user), but unless it comes with a nice installer that
requires absolutely no thought, doesn't do anything
that might cause concern (i.e. doesn't reduce the
security on his mahine) and works absolutely
seamlessly (i.e. doesn't give pop-up security
warnings), that's never going to happen. And if he
doesn't use it then there are millions of others who
similarly won't use it for exactly the same reasons.

I might have a hunt around to see if I can find any
useful people to talk to - searching around for info
on this previously, I found a couple of blogs from MS
developers working on SP2, and it might be worth at
least contacting them to see if they might be able to
help or give any pointers etc.

RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD and Windows XP SP2

2004-09-03 Thread James Robertson
Kim -

Thanks for the reply. I know I'm going to feel awkward
about making this suggestion since I can't code it up,
but... I've got a feeling that the only way to get
DQSD working properly under XP SP2 (even taking into
account the available registry hack) might be to wrap
up (i.e. host) DQSD in a Windows executable.
Presumably this would allow DQSD HTML and objects
originating from it (e.g. external objects such as
Microsoft.XmlHttp) not to be limited by the rules
applying to IE content (i.e the SP2 Local Machine Zone
lockdown), allowing them to run without being blocked.

At
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/lockdown_devimp.aspx
it talks about:
creat[ing] a separate application that hosts the HTML
content Internet Explorer Web Object Control (WebOC).
The HTML is then no longer bound by the same rules
that apply to content run in Internet Explorer. When
the HTML content runs in that other process, it can
have full rights as defined by the developer or zone
policy for that process.

Of course, MS don't seem to have gone so far as to
give sample code or suggested code architecture for
hosting an HTML-based application!

Anyway, those are my thoughts...

Just tried using the 1.25 version of gg.xml which is

[DQSD-Users] Re: different link page depening on option entered

2004-08-12 Thread James Robertson
Tom -

If I understand you properly, you're wanting to post a
different form according to options that have been
entered as part of a search query. I submitted a
search patus.xml a while ago which chooses between two
different forms depending upon user input. Don't know
if the search was committed but if you want a copy
then email me.

It's basically got two forms - patusf_0 and patusf_1 -
and the form submitting bit of the code is as follows:

  if (strForm == patusf_0) {
var myform = document.patusf_0;
} else {
var myform = document.patusf_1;
  }

  myform.Query.value = strQuery;
  submitForm(myform);

strQuery is the query including the user-dependent
options, and is common to both forms.

I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but it
works for me. Hope that answers your query.

[DQSD-Users] RE: Dave search bar and active content blocking by XP SP2

2004-04-14 Thread James Robertson
Thad's obviously hit the nail on the head here, but
presumably it is potentially dangerous to set those
registry keys to 0 since they will cancel the
increased security in the Local Zone for HTML which is
implemented by SP2's Local Machine Lockdown.

There's a linked page detailing developer implications
at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/lockdown_devimp.aspx

This suggests a number of alternative solutions,
including saving files as HTA instead of HTML to give
different security zone settings, or adding a mark of
the web comment in the HTML files along the lines of:
!-- saved from url=(0020)http://www.dqsd.net/ --
to give the HTML the same security zone settings as
the source website

There's also mention of:
creat[ing] a separate application that hosts the HTML
content Internet Explorer Web Object Control (WebOC).
The HTML is then no longer bound by the same rules
that apply to content run in Internet Explorer. When
the HTML content runs in that other process, it can
have full rights as defined by the developer or zone
policy for that process.

Indeed, the SP2 Local Machine Zone Lockdown is
 blocking DQSD from
running every reboot. To fix it change (in
 StartRunregedit):

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft \Internet
 Explorer\main

\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown\Explorer.exe
 to 0

 and If It Exists:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft \Internet
 Explorer\main

\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown\Explorer.exe
 to 0

 per

http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/locallockdown.aspx

I don't see any concession to whitelist DQSD running
 in explorer as it
is, we should probably add a prompt to the installer
 and have it execute
this key change, maybe only if SP2 is installed.

I tried to send a registry or a zipped registry file
 but sourceforge has
 stringent listserv attachment policies apparently.

[DQSD-Users] New search - patus

2004-03-05 Thread James Robertson
Finally having realised that javascript is case
sensitive, I've managed to sort out my search
(although the coding is still a bit clunky)...

Attached is a new search patus.xml which replaces Phil
Albert's three searches pat.xml, patno.xml and
patapp.xml. This one also includes query filtering to
remove extraneous text which frequently mucks up
people's searches on patent application serial number
and publication number for published applications and
granted patents.

As far as I am aware, Phil is happy with the new
search (although your confirmation to the mailing list
would be appreciated, Phil).

RE: [DQSD-Users] Composing searches

2004-03-03 Thread James Robertson
The wizard's no use here, unfortunately - I'm trying
to combine Philip Albert's pat, patapp and patno
searches into a single enhanced version and coding in
the logic for changing between forms and allowing for
the necessary switches is causing me problems.

It's nothing too complicated, and is mainly my
ignorance of how to code properly in javascript...

Re: [DQSD-Users] Real-time holidays

2004-01-05 Thread James Robertson
Well, if that's going to be done then the UK holidays
can be a bit difficult. In particular, holidays
falling on a weekend are celebrated on the Monday
following. If two consecutive holidays fall on a
Saturday and Sunday, they are observed on the Monday
and Tuesday following. Presumably that would need some
kind of country-specific switch (or is that a general
rule for other countries as well?).

UK holidays are also occasionally a bit unpredictable
- for example, the Spring Bank Holiday is usually the
last Monday in May, but back in 2002 was changed to
Tuesday 4 June to pair up with a special Bank Holiday
on Monday 3 June (Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday) to give
a 4-day weekend.

This might not sound too convenient, but would it be
worth including the possibility for some kind of
holiday exceptions in a country-specific file (e.g.
the main holidays file) so that a holiday defined by
parsing of previous parameters in the file can be
cancelled, and so that other holidays can be added?

We would also need to draw a distinction between
holidays and festivals - I've got a load of festivals
such as Mothering Sunday, Commonwealth Day and Shrove
Tuesday in holidays.gb.xml which aren't holidays (and
don't obey the above rule about holidays falling on a
weekend) but which are nice to include anyway.

Thanks.

James

Re: [DQSD-Users] Real-time holidays

2004-01-05 Thread James Robertson
After years of wondering how the various UK holiday
dates get calculated, 30 seconds on Google looking for
Easter and algorithm made it all clear! Just in
case people are interested, there's a good javascript
calculator here (click on Return links for the main
page):
http://tech.irt.org/articles/js052/source.htm

There's also a good explanation of how various other
holidays and festivals (Shrove Tuesday etc.) are
calculated around the Easter date:

RE: [DQSD-Users] win 95 taskbar

2003-02-20 Thread James Robertson
Dave -

Like JB said, it may well be down to IE integration
with the OS. As I recall from Win95, there was a
Desktop Update OS patch that came with Internet
Explorer 4.01 SP2. This installed a quickstart bar and
allowed a web desktop, and so it might enable you to
use DQSD on Win95.

If you can find a copy of IE 4.01 SP2 (it's bound to
be on some old ISP CDs etc. you might have) then
you'll need to uninstall your current version of IE
(it might be an idea to export all your favourites
first), install the old IE + Desktop Update (it's an
option during the install process), and then
re-install the current IE over it.

No guarantees that it will work though!
