Re: [DQSD-Users] [DQSD-Devel] IE 11 breaks DQSD

2013-11-15 Thread Michael Kairys
I use DQSD heavily and I would be lost without it. I would be willing in
principle to try and fix it but I have no idea at all how it works; nor do I
have IE11 although that could be remedied.

 Alright boys, it's been a while alright!

 I have not installed DQSD on my work machines the last 3 to 4 years.
 It's still on my home machine (8 year old xp pro machine) and I don't
 really use if for opening web pages for a couple of reasons:

 - it takes about 30 seconds for the command to be processed and a tab to
 open for me
 - as well as opening the tab it has been giving a pop up ie error in
 defer_tools.js for ages and I have not tried to trouble shoot that
 because of the time delay mentioned before anyway, in that time I would
 have opened the tab and searched a couple of times over anyway.

 That said, Even with the popup error if I have a currency conversion to
 do I use it (e.g. my alias xese 400 converts 400 from sterling to euro)

 Also, I use it for a calculator regularly.

 If it was fully functional and worked on windows 7 out of the box like it
 used to work before for me (maybe when my home machine was newer and less
 bloated) I would most definitely use it - I miss it to be honest.
 The alternatives like setting up the browser searches are not as powerful
 I think.

 To get some speed back to the home laptop I am thinking about installing
 ubunto on it, so that would mean bye bye dqsd :-(

 I have been always hoping to get a mail from someone who has fallen in
 love with the tool and sorted it out and made it relevant again! :-)

 Take it easy, Tom.

Let me butt in just to say thank you, Kim!

IMO this release has been as thoroughly vetted by the Q/A dept. as it is
going to be, and you should remove the beta :)

 I managed to build everything yesterday, but didn't have time to go

just
 remove the beta decoration and release it as 4.1.0.0?

[DQSD-Users] Bar color, again

2010-10-07 Thread Michael Kairys
Hello all,

Rather quiet is this list. I hope someone is still reading it :)

I've written a few times about my problems getting the search bar to sit
transparently in my Windows 7 taskbar. I had it looking pretty good until I
installed IE 9 beta, and now it's a light blue for some reason. See
attached.

Please can anyone tell me how to control this. I would be happy to force it
to the same color as my task bar if I could; I've tried putting colors in my
localsearch.css for .txtfld, .clock background but the color I get seems not
to be related to the color I put in, and it doesn't cover the whole area
anyway.

Any advice appreciated.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Bar color, again

2010-10-07 Thread Michael Kairys
Thanks so much for your reply; glad to know someone is listening :)

Attached seems to be as close as I can get; I got it by setting body and
.txtfld background to black as you suggested:

/* localsearch.css ... */

body
{
  background: #00;
}

.txtfld, .clock
{
  background: #00;
  font : calibri;
  font-size : 13;
  font-weight : normal;
}

I saw no difference from using transp.gif instead of 7toolbar1.bmp, i.e.

background: #00 url(transp.gif) repeat-x fixed top;

It's not transparent but at least it's not bright blue :)

I should have mentioned to use the previously attached file in place of
7toolbar1.bmp (just find/replace in the .css and change to transp.gif).  Be
sure the transp.gif file exists in the DQSD folder next to the
7toolbar1.bmp.

If that works, you may need to remove the black pixels in dqsd.png (little
magnifying glass icon) and make them “transparent” (alpha channel) as well.
If the transp.gif works, you may need to add a few colored pixels at the
very top of the file to best match the embossed look at the top of the
taskbar (as seen in the 7toolbar1.bmp).  I recommend you do all of this in
Photoshop.

I’ve not installed the latest IE9, so please reply with whether or not you
got it to look better.  Thanks!

 Refresh my memory. Are you running Win7 32 bit? Are you using AERO?

 Reason I ask is that I am test installing Win7 32bit (my first 32 bit
 install, all others have been 64 bit) on an OLD Toshiba laptop. No Aero
 support. First pass install of DQSD has color problems as well but I am
 still looking at it (may have the wrong installation kit for Win7 32
 bit).

Yes Matt, I am using your theme.css (and grateful for it! :)

I first tried globally substituting transp.gif for 7toolbar1.bmp and got a

1. The reason the effect was partial is body did not have a background
specified; when I added it I got the whole thing
2.  Whether I used 7toolbar1.bmp or transp.gif didn't seem to make a
difference
3. The relevant changes were to body and .txtfld, .clock, and moving those
to localsearch.css achieved the same effect.

I have never seen actual transparency...

 What's your AERO color intensity set at? Mine is about 45%. Also, do you
have Enable Transparency
 checked in your Window Color and Appearance Control Panel
(Personalization)?

Yes to both; my Window Color and Appearance loks just like yours.

 Weird. My Win7 (32/64bit) theme and yours look different. Notice, mine
 has the little magnifying glass and the font size is different?

I have changed my font in localsearch.css:

.txtfld, .clock
{
  background: #00;
  font : calibri;
  font-size : 13;
  font-weight : normal;
}

I put the chevron on the left and hid the banner/logo button in
localprefs.js:

buttonalign = left;
bannerurl = ;

If I back those out it looks like the attached.

 The good news is that the color black seems to still have a transparent
 property with DQSD, so perhaps if you completely wipe out the theme and
 re-apply mine, you might still make out ok.

  If that works, you may need to remove the black pixels in dqsd.png
  (little magnifying glass icon) and make them “transparent” (alpha
  channel) as well.
  If the transp.gif works, you may need to add a few colored pixels at
  the very top of the file to best match the embossed look at the top of
  the taskbar (as seen in the 7toolbar1.bmp).  I recommend you do all of
  this in Photoshop.

  I’ve not installed the latest IE9, so please reply with whether or not
  you got it to look better.  Thanks!

 I put the chevron on the left and hid the banner/logo button in

  Yes Matt, I am using your theme.css (and grateful for it! :)

  I first tried globally substituting transp.gif for 7toolbar1.bmp and
  got a partial result, see attached. By further experimentation I
 determined:

  1. The reason the effect was partial is body did not have a
  background specified; when I added it I got the whole thing 2.
  Whether I used 7toolbar1.bmp or transp.gif didn't seem to make a
  difference 3. The relevant changes were to body and .txtfld, .clock,
  and moving those to localsearch.css achieved the same effect.

  I have never seen actual transparency...

 I took a look at theme.css (Win7 version) and saw it uses 7toolbar1.bmp

 draw the backgrounds, and that turns out to be a 1-pixel wide column of
 black pixels with a two-pixel decoration at the top. So I made one like
 it
 using my toolbar blue. It looks almost perfect, except you'll note the
 light
 top-shadow is one pixel thicker over the search bar than the rest of the
 toolbar (fig. 1). For some reason DQSD is putting two pixels of light
 blue
 where the bmp only has one (fig. 2).

 Anyway my original question remains... how does this work for anyone
 whose

   have consistent results on both machines. The bar doesn't match my

   you probably need to dive into the CSS and adapt them to go better

   What puzzles me is that other people (e.g. James Nix on Win 7
   64-bit)
  seem
   to get a transparent search bar that lets their Win 7 theme colors
   show through.

  I seem to recall the themes were designed not to be transparent, but
  to have the same color as the various themes (there's one Olive, one
  Silver and one XP blue, for example). Maybe James system color happens
  to match the DQSD theme color?

   I could perhaps tweak the search bar color to match the taskbar
   color but (1) the taskbar is sort of a gradient fill rather than a
  uniform
   color, (2) if I changed my windows theme of course the search bar
   would
  no
   longer match, and (3) I haven't found, in my various poking, how to
   do
  that!

  Again, I don't know enough CSS to style my way out of a double-door,
  so I don't think I can help :)

 I definitely agree it's a problem with DQSD, I just think both
 reuseBrowserWindowMode and launchmode affect how DQSD interacts with
 Internet Explorer when launching searches...

Well, there are only six possibilities from launchmode = 0/1 and
reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0/1/2, and I can attest that all six result in the
extra blank window.

However when setting launchmode to 0 I get this error from search.htm:
DQSDLauncher.AppDataDirectory is null or not an object.

 I have the cause/effect but can't explain why/what.

 Brief Update of Symptom: DQSD entered specific addresses (i.e.
 www.newegg.com) opens additional blank page for each entry.

 Currently using:

 Vista Home Premium 32 Bit SP1 with IE7 in Tabbed Mode.
 Dqsd-400-rc3

 Problem Cause/Solution: IE7 was running with Protected Mode enabled.
 Disabling Protected Mode caused DQSD to behave
 as expected when localprefs.js set to:

 *
 *  0=new window always [default]
 *  1=single window for all
 * 2=single window for each search type
 */
 reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;

 Note that I had tried disabling all IE7 add-ons as well as various
 spyware/adware tools (AVG Free Edition, Spybot Resident Shiels and
 Tea=timer) with no luck.

 Seems like DQSD did not behave this way when I first upgraded to Vista
 Sp1.
 Maybe a new Vista IE7 security patch?

 Has no one else noticed this? I mean I like feeling special but
 jez not like this! :)

Re: [DQSD-Users] Extra IE window when URL entered (DQSD 4.0.0.3, IE7, Vista)

2007-12-22 Thread Michael Kairys
 Can you try and experiment with the launch options in userprefs.js? I
 can't remember the exact names, but maybe some variations there will
 yield correct behavior?

Thanks for your reply, Kim. The relevant prefs appear to be:

/* Reuse browser window mode
* NOTE: reuse browser mode is only valid when IE is the default browser.
* If any other browser is the default and the launchmode=1, a new browser
* window will be spawned for each search regardless of category.
*
*  0=new window always [default]
*  1=single window for all
* 2=single window for each search type
*/
reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;

/* Browser launch mode
*  0=use IE
*  1=use default browser
*/
launchmode=1;

I tried opening two URLs in succession with different settings of
reuseBrowserWindowMode.

With 0, the first URL gives a blank window and a window with the URL; the
second URL gives a second blank window and reuses the other window for the
URL (no new tab even :)

With 1 and 2, the first URL gives a blank window and a window with the URL;
the second URL reuses the first blank window (or at least doesn't open a new
one) and reuses the other window for the URL.

Then I tried setting launchmode to 0. When I restarted (with !) I got an
error dialog:

 An error has occurred in the script on this page.

 Line:   2
 Char:   1
 Error: 'DQSDLauncher.AppDataDirectory' is null or not an object
 Code:   0
 URL: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Quick%20Search%20Deskbar/search.htm
 Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

I said yes to that, and the behavior thenceforth was as above.

That's all I know, and it ain't much :)

Re: [DQSD-Users] Local aliases not working

2007-06-20 Thread Michael Kairys
No problem, and TIA for any advice...

// localaliases.txt
//

// This is where you can add your own aliases. This file will not be
overwritten
// when the toolbar is updated.
//
// The format is as follows:
//   alias|action|title|description|category
//
// A single tab or pipe | is used as a separator.
// The symbol %s is a placeholder that will be replaced with the
user-entered
// search term upon execution.
//
// The title and description are used in the help window to describe the

// purpose of the alias.
//
// The category can be used to define a category for the search to be
listed
// under in the help and the menus. If no category is defined, it will be
listed
// under the 'Shortcuts' category.
//
// NOTE: Only the alias and action fields are required, BUT currently
all
// preceeding fields must be supplied. I.e., this will work:
//   alias|action|title
// But, this will not:
//   alias|action|||category
//
// (I.e., consecutive delimiters will be collapsed to a single delimiter.)

//

// The following are some example aliases that you can use or modify for
your
// own purposes:

// movie|ym

  You don't specify which version of DQSD you're using. If you're using
  the latest RC3 Build, which you should be on Vista, you need to
  completely uninstall all previous versions before installing DQSD.

  I'm still DQSD-less, since I've been waiting until we have an RTM
  version before asking someone to build a 64-bit Vista ready version. And
  I only run 64-bit here.

2007-06-20 Thread Michael Kairys
I tried removing everything except the examples, so my file contained:

Then I tested each one. A few worked, most didn't. I hope someone sees a
pettern here!

movie   doesn't work (ym does)
mov doesn't work
sf  works
sfp works (specifically sfp dqsd)
excel   doesn't work
exp doesn't work
tulsa   works

 I have class tonight and need to run out of here now. But right off the
bat
 I see 2 things that concern me.

 1. (and this might be just because of how the e-mail clients word
 wrapped...) any line that is not intended to be an alias MUST start with
//
 This includes the - line. As I look at what you sent I see
several
 that do not start that way (but again it could be an e-mail word wrap
 issue). What you should do is make sure all your non-alias lines start
with
 //

 2. I see some aliases with %s and some with %s. I think the quotes are
 wrong and should be dropped and they should just be %s
 Example:

 gm|gg /maps %s

 should be

 gm|gg /maps %s

 Try these ideas and let me know. Don't forget to reload DQSD when you try
 this. I will try to use your localaliases.txt after class tonight, if I
get
 home early enough.

Never mind...

I went back and did it all again and this time I got a very nice looking

first time but I think UAC was getting in my way...

Anyway, thanks to whoever put together the Vista theme; it looks great.

 Hello all,

 I've recently started playing with Vista to see if I can live with it; of
 course DQSD is a prerequisite for that :) I have two issues:

 1. (Functional) Closing the searchbar (right-click, choose Close Toolbar)
 crashes the Explorer process.

 1. (Cosmetic) I found in an archived message that someone had made theme
 files for Vista, and indeed they help make the DQSD bar look better in the
 Vista taskbar. However it would look much better still if it didn't quite
 span the width of the taskbar.

 I've attached a piece of a screenshot (having no idea if attachments work
 with this list or not) showing the DQSD bar next to the Windows Address
 toolbar, which leaves a few pixels of taskbar above and below itself. If
 the DQSD bar could do that it would look pretty good. (I tried playing
 with localsearch.css but I couldn't find a way...)

[DQSD-Users] Does 4.0 rc2 really fix the XP SP2 problem?

2007-01-12 Thread Michael Kairys
I just installed 4.0 rc2 after uninstalling 3.1.9.2. I noticed on the
DQSD home page that it now says:

This new version is revamped to work correctly Windows XP Service Pack 2
in order to not require the workarounds required by the 3.x version.

So I went into my registry and changed
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft \Internet
Explorer\main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown\explorer.exe
from 0 to 1. However when I rebooted I got the same old yellow warning over
the DQSD toolbar.

Is this supposed to be fixed in rc2?

[DQSD-Users] Can a search write a file?

2004-03-04 Thread Michael Kairys
Begging forgiveness for my complete ignorance of these things...

Can a search be made to save some content to a file? What I should like to
do is this: to have comx - to which I have become quite attached -
automaticaly save its content to a file in the same way that I might do
myself, with a right-click and save picture as. In fact I should like to
open several at once and save them all...

And (though it may not seem related) I wonder if an alias can be made to
include qualifiers, since I have not been able to make this work. I should
like to make an alias like myfavoritecomics to mean comx /this /and
/that.

Thank you in advance for any information!

[DQSD-Users] translate.js bugs

2003-11-13 Thread Michael Kairys

The translations searches (some words en-es) seem to be broken. I found by
experimentation if I removed the :5081 from the generated URL then the
searches would succeed, so I modified translate.js thusly and it seems to
work now.

Please note I'm entirely new to this stuff and just blundering around...
