userenv.dll is not on the win98 CD according to sfc. I downloaded it from
the internet and it is no longer flagged in Dependency Walker. In pink are
these ADVAPI32.DLL, KERNEL32.DLL, NTDLL.DLL as branches of userenv.dll as
well as Ole32.dll shell32.dll. Apphelp.dll is still in yellow of course

Shawn

I used sfc to get new copies of Mfc42.dll and Imm32.dll from the win98 CD.

I have rebooted but still can't get search bar to install and the same
error message if I try to Regsvr32 the .dll =
LoadLibrary(C:\Progra~1\Quick~1\DQSDTo~1.dll) failed. GetLastError returns
0x0485.

Apphelp.dll should be OK, I think it's new for Windows XP, and SHLWAPI,
which depends upon it handles the missing dependency gracefully.

Userenv.dll, on the other hand, is a bit of a surprise... It's
definitely needed by the system - contains environment variable
expansion functionality (I guess for auto-transform of %PROGRAMFILES%,
etc. to your local disk path).

See if you can install it off of your '98 install CD, using the
technique described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=189495.

Ole32.dll shell32.dll are flagged in pink

Pink means one or more exports are not available, but most clients are
smart enough to do fallback, so this shouldn't be a problem.

BUT when I look at other .dlls at random, a number of
them come up the same even from programs that seem to be running well.

Yeah, most applications handle this fine, so no need to be alarmed.

It strikes me as a bit odd that userenv.dll is not available on your
system... I would have thought a lot of things would break without it.

Shawn,

That's quite a list!
I found a couple of minor bugs I thought I'd patch for Eric's
benefit... :)

Next go to a command prompt and into the directory(ies) they're
installed to and run this command:
   regsvr32.exe /y DQSDTools.dll

That should be
regsvr32.exe /u DQSDTools.dll
for unregistering.

Download the latest installer from http://www.dqds.org/

That's http://www.dqsd.org - you type too fast :)

RE: [DQSD-Users] Unable to install the search bar

Richard

I emptied the windows temporary folder (I do that regularly anyway) but it
did not help.

Shawn

I have reloaded the Windows script (the current version for 98 did not need
a patch) but still can't install the search bar. However I do get the
folowing error when trying to register or unregister the .dll LoadLibrary
(C:/ ) failed GetLastError returns 0x0485. I have tried both
from the start menu from a DOS box. A quick search (on Google) suggested
I needed the VBRun 6 files which I have installed but I still get the same
error when trying to register the .dll still can't install the search
bar. I copied the .dll to the win/system but that does not help.

At 00:21 17/08/03 -0400, you wrote:
Hi Eric,

I have posted this previously but without any solutions.

No promises, but I'll try. ;)

I use Win 98 SE the search bar ran well on I.E. 5.01.
After upgrading I.E. from 5.01 to 5.5 I tried to install
a later version of the search bar but it would not appear
on the task bar ... The previous version of the search
bar and now the latest version also do not work. Moving
to I.E. 6.0 has also not helped.

Are both search bars still installed? Are the bars still 'enabled' in
the shell? I'm going to give you some steps - do them in order as far
as they apply. The earlier ones are less likely to apply than the
later ones. ;)

Turn off the shell bars (right click on it and 'close toolbar').

Next go to a command prompt and into the directory(ies) they're
installed to and run this command:
  regsvr32.exe /y DQSDTools.dll

Next, go through the motions of physically uninstalling the
application (control panel, add/remove, dqsd).

Physically move or delete the DQSD install directory(ies) (C:\Program
Files\Quick Search Deskbar) to ensure the files cannot be referenced
anymore.

Reboot.

Re-install Windows Script Technologies 5.6:
  http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Make sure you get the one for 98!

Reboot.

Go to windows update and patch the problems with scripting.

Reboot.

Download the latest installer from http://www.dqds.org/

Install it.

Right-click on the taskbar and pick Toolbars Add quick search.
You might need to right-click again and select Toolbars Search.

If this doesn't work, let us know what happens.

Hi Eric,

Does the error actually show with c:/ - with a forward slash? Are
you sure you're doing it using the correct path? Windows systems use
\ (not trying to be patronizing, just want to make sure - and I'm an
anal-retentive twit).

Have you scanned your system for viruses (
http://ReliableAnswers.com/Virus/ )? Several viruses will cause
DllRegisterServer to fail in infected files. That would prevent it
from installing correctly, too, since it has to be registered to
operate.

Hi Eric,

However I do get the folowing error when trying to register or

It seems there is some dependency missing for DQSDTools.dll.
It'd be great if you could download Dependency Walker [1], and try to
report back which DLL is missing from your system.

Just open up DQSDTools.dll in the program, and it will show a treeview
of dependencies for the module. Missing dependencies are flagged with
read or yellow, IIRC.

FWIW, the VB6 run-time you downloaded and installed should _not_ be
necessary for DQSD to work correctly.

Curiously,
