[dspace-tech] XMLUI Formatting Distribution License

2016-03-14 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Everyone,

Is there a way to edit the default license and have html formatting in the
XMLUI version? I have tried multiple things to try to get it to work but I
can't. Right now my agreement looks like a giant wad of text with no
formatting. We are running DSpace 1.8.2 and will be upgrading in the near
future to 5.

Thanks,

Jake

My guess is that during upgrade, you didn't run "mvn clean" and thus you have
both the new and old pdfbox library installed. You can check in [dspace]/lib/
and all the WEB-INF/lib/ directories.

The solution would be to run mvn clean before mvn package and rebuild DSpace.

Hi Jacob and all,

Further to this, I figured out how that page metadata is actually generated and
then read into a variable in the XMLUI template, so the issue wasn't as
complicated as I thought -- it's basically all down to that #1 issue I
identified, not the others.

I've logged a JIRA ticket for the problem at
https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-3477 and my pull request for the fix is at
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/1637. Still need to test with DSpace 5
(the configurationmanager changes could mean it only applies to 6). If you grab
that pull request and try it out in your dev environment, you'll hopefully see
the badges.

You may still run into scope trouble with the http vs https javascript
references in which case the scheme changes to '//' from #4 in my earlier reply
should fix up the scheme mismatch.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Kim

> wrote:
Hi Jacob, hmm, I think there are a few things going on here...

1. I've figured out that the configuration properties for altmetric aren't
being loaded properly by Mirage -- that's fixed with a pretty easy PR and
wouldn't be hard to patch your instance. (just replacing things like
confman:getProperty("altmetrics", "altmetric.enabled") with
confman:getProperty("altmetric.enabled") )

2. Further, the variables relied on to get identifiers ($identifier_handle and
$identifier_doi) are not being created properly in global-variables.xsl because
it doesn't have access to item metadata in that context. I think the best thing
to do for this is for us to create these variables in somewhere like
item-view.xsl which has access to all the item metadata.

3. A couple of extra issues with $identifier_handle -- it's looking in a field
called dc.identifier.handle which doesn't exist by default (most of us use
dc.identifier.uri) and isn't reading the altmetrics.field config property to
see which field you've actually told the altmetric badge to use. Also, for
handles, altmetric expects just the prefix/identifier in the "data-handle"
attribute, not the full URI so we'll have to try and strip that out too (ie.
yours should be passed as 10133/3376) when creating the $identifier_handle
variable

I'll keep testing (I have managed to get the badge displaying properly when I
fix the config property stuff and hardcode your handle instead of relying on
the variables) but I think best steps are: I'll submit a PR to fix the config
issues, I'll figure out where and best DRI path to access identifier metadata
is for variables to use with altmetric/plum badges, tell said variable to look
at altmetrics.field to make sure it is looking in the right field, and if it's
expecting a handle, strip out everything before the prefix.

4. You might have trouble loading the JS in on your site anyway, based on
something else I saw:

The browsers I try are blocking jquery from being loaded because it's trying to
load from the Google CDN with http:// whereas your site is secure under https://
(most modern browsers will now block this kind of mixed/insecure content
loading)

XMLUI does attempt to compile the correct scheme (http or https) into the URL
for javascript loading (see
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-6_x/dspace-xmlui/src/main/webapp/themes/Mirage/lib/xsl/core/page-structure.xsl)
so I think XMLUI must think that your base URL starts with http:// and not
https://

One reason for this could be that your site is sitting behind some
frontends/appliances which handle the SSL endpoint and then offload traffic to
your backend application servers running on http:// -- does this sound like it
could be the case? If so, the fix might be as simple as finding the line in
page-structure.xsl that compiles the javascript script element:

http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/>',
 $jqueryVersion ,'/jquery.min.js')}">

...and tell it to just use relative scheme regardless, eg.

http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/>',
 $jqueryVersion

Figured it out. I typo’ed searching through here the first time.

If you add -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 to the Java OPTS in the config tomcat app, it
will resolve the issue.

Hello,

We are running DSpace 6, on Windows 2008R2 and Postgres.

Whenever a user tries to delete an item to replace it with a corrected item
during the submission process they get an error, Authorization denied for
action WRITE on BITSTREAM, and have to upload another copy. This happens
whether the user is an administrator or just a submitter. Once an item has been
approved things can be deleted no problem.

I’m not even sure where to start or why this is the case. It was never an

Hello All,

I just spun up a new DSpace 6 server, migrated all of our data and databases,
etc. We always have renamed the xmlui directory to dspace. Now on version
6.0, all of our handles are resolving to
http://www.uleth.ca/dspace/xmlui/handle/10133/xxx

This is very annoying and I haven’t been able to find a way around it. Any
suggestions?

Have you checked that your dspace server knows what URL it's on?

If not, it can issue cookies for the wrong domain which get ignored, so login
doesn't work.

[dspace-tech] XMLUI as Root DSpace 6.3

2018-10-31 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Everyone,

Windows Server 2016, Tomcat 8.5, DSpace 6.3.

http://localhost:8080/, however if I go to http://localhost:8080/xmlui it works
fine.

I've tried the context fragments, with ROOT.xml in
tomcat\conf\catalina\localhost\ and still have the same issue. Restarted the
tomcat server, restarted the server, still having not luck. Any suggestions?

Hi Jake,

In your catalina.log there are a large number of "SEVERE" errors which are the
main problem (s). Most of them seem to say something like:

"Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: The main resource set specified
[C:\dspace\webapps\ROOT] is not valid"

This sounds to me like, as Sean just noted, you *may* have a "double
deployment" issue. I wonder if you've made so many changes that your
appBase and your docBase no longer match up. Could you revert out
your changes and start fresh with just a
[tomcat]/conf/Catalina/localhost/ROOT.xml ? Or, could you share more of your
current configuration with us? It seems like it's essentially "confused"
Tomcat into not knowing how to start your webapps.

Also, since you look to be using Windows, you may want to change any
backslashes (\) to forward slashes (/). So, in your Tomcat configs, use paths
like "C:/dspace/webapps/xmlui" instead of "C:\dspace\webapps\xmlui". In many
Java applications (including DSpace), forward slashes are recommended, no
matter what Operating System you are using.

The context fragments don’t appear to do anything. I had setup symbolic links

Hi Jake,

A simple Tomcat Context fragment should work. That's all I tend to use. So,
for example, having a file named:

[tomcat]/conf/Catalina/localhost/ROOT.xml

All that file needs to contain is one line...something like this:

Technically, this same sort of configuration should also work in your
server.xml, under the section (though, in that situation you'd want to
specify a "path="/"" attribute, like in your example)

If that's *not* working for you, you may want to look closer at whether Tomcat
is reporting errors in its log files. The errors in the Tomcat logs may
provide us with more information about what Tomcat doesn't like about your
configuration. So, please send any errors to this list and hopefully we can
help you figure them out.

I've made some customizations to our front page to add searches for Series and

When we just us the url, https://opus.uleth.ca they do not show up. It shows
up as the screenshot labelled without XML or DRI. However, if I use
https://opus.uleth.ca?xml or https://opus.uleth.ca?dri they show up properly.
I've tried Chrome, Opera, Firefox and Edge. It happens in all of those.
However if I'm on a mobile device, android or apple, they show up fine without

It sounds like you have ruled out a browser cache issue.

In the Control Panel -> Java Information section, try clearing the Cocoon cache

[dspace-tech] HTTPS and SOLR

2018-11-05 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Can I have SOLR secured under a wildcard SSL certificate? I’ve installed our
cert and forced HTTPS I’m tomcat, but SOLR keeps giving a 302 error now and
when I browse it it tells me that it’s an invalid cert. I haven’t been able to
figure a way around it. We aren’t using Apache HTTPD to configure our ports.

RE: [dspace-tech] Re: HTTPS and SOLR

2018-11-06 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Mark,

It’s because the cert is wildcard for our domain it is breaking going to the
localhost for SOLR. With SOLR setup for localhost only, it got grumpy. I’ve
found an easy way to work around it now. I hope to get apache httpd working on
it in the future.

There are any number of ways a cert. can be invalid. Which specific one does
your browser show you? (Browsers are so "helpful" these days that you may need
to dig...and dig...to get down to the real reason.) A less "friendly", more
precise tool such as 'openssl s_client' may provide better information.

HTTP status 302 ("Found") is a redirection. Tomcat (not Solr) is saying that
the resource exists but you have to ask for it at a different location. Is
DSpace configured to contact Solr via HTTPS? Does 'bin/dspace dsprop -property
solr.server' show the https: scheme?

RE: [dspace-tech] HTTPS and SOLR

2018-11-06 Thread Cameron, Jacob
We don’t want SOLR available publically, and it is secured only to the
localhost. However, when I forced HTTPS our DSpace instance in Tomcat, it
started causing the 302 errors with SOLR. I guess I’m going to have to install
Apache httpd or nginx to handle the certificate. I was hoping to get away with
just using tomcat.

Subject: Re: [dspace-tech] HTTPS and SOLR

Dear Jacob,

Is there any reason you need Solr available publicly? It is recommended that
Solr run on localhost and the DSpace applications communicate with it directly,
ie at http://localhost:8080/solr. The Solr application is not secured and
should, under most circumstances, never be exposed publicly.

We use a normal HTTP server (nginx) in front of our Tomcat. It makes things
like TLS certificates easier. We block access to the /solr path in nginx:

# Only allow Solr access from localhost
location /solr {
allow 127.0.0.1;
deny all;
}

If I ever need direct access to the Solr web application remotely I use SSH
local port forwarding, ie:

$ ssh -L 3000:localhost:8080 dspaceserver.com<http://dspaceserver.com>

Then I can access the remote Solr application locally using:
http://localhost:3000/solr

Hope that helps,

Re: [dspace-tech] Unable to Map Items

2019-04-01 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Tim, my original message said DSpace 6.3. We are using the original Mirage
XMLUI. The items were not mapped before. Our cataloguing team discovered we had
issues when they attempted to map the items. We haven’t customized or changed
any code for checkboxes. I did check the log files but nothing out of the
ordinary is showing. It just started out of the blue.

Hi Jake,

Unfortunately, there's not enough information here to give an exact answer.
But, I do know that the Item Mapper screens will only display the checkbox *if
the item is not already mapped* to a given Collection. So, if the Item is
listed, but has no checkbox, that implies it already is mapped to (or belongs
to) the Collection you are mapping into. This logic is in the code here:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-6_x/dspace-xmlui/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/xmlui/aspect/administrative/mapper/SearchItemForm.java#L136-L153

It sounds like that must not be the situation for you though. I also just tried
this on our demo site (running 6.3 with Mirage 2) and it looks to be working
fine there: http://demo.dspace.org/xmlui/

So, a few things you might want to try:

  * Check your logs to see if some sort of error is being thrown when these
items are displayed. Maybe something is erroring out that could provide a clue
  * Do you have a custom theme? If so, are you customizing the display of
checkboxes in any way? Maybe your theme is causing checkboxes (in general) to
not be displayed properly? If you have a custom theme you could try
(temporarily) reverting to a default theme to see if it works right. If it
does, look closely at anything in your theme related to

That's all I can think of. If you figure out any more clues, feel free to let
us know (and remember, it can also be helpful to tell us what version of DSpace
you are running -- I've assumed 6.x above.)

[dspace-tech] Adding extracted text to Bundle: Text

Hi All,

Is it possible to add Bundle: Text items through the web interface? I've been
trying. We have 2 pdf documents that filter-media can't handle, but I've been
able to run through pdfbox and get extracted text for. I'd like to add the
text if possible, but there doesn't appear to be a way to do it in the XMLUI

Dspace 6.3, Windows Server 2016, Tomcat 9, PGSQL9.6

We made some adjustments, but some of the information is not displaying the way
we want.

e.g. https://hdl.handle.net/10133/

Is there a way to make the citation-page.cfg pull information from a specific
field(s), so rather than dc.publisher, have it pull from just
dc.publisher.department and same for dc.identifier, we don't have the
dc.identifier.citation to show, just the dc.identifier.uri.

RE: [dspace-tech] citation-page.cfg Question

2019-05-13 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Tim,

I have adjusted the citation-page.fields portion, but it’s wildcarding the
entries, so dc.publisher.* instead of dc.publisher.department, and the same for
dc.identifier, it’s pulling everything instead of just the sub category I have
added.

Hi Jake,

The fields displayed on that citation page are configurable. See the
"citation-page.fields" setting described in the documentation at

[dspace-tech] PDFs losing embedded links after uploading

2019-07-04 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello Everyone,

Dspace 6.3, XMLUI, Mirage theme.

We uploaded a few PDFs with links in them yesterday. The links work properly
in the document before it goes into DSpace but it seems to be breaking the
embedded links after the document is uploaded into DSpace and the DSpace
created cover page is added.

Any thoughts?

[dspace-tech] Weird Issue with PDF Opening

2020-05-12 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello Everyone,

DSpace 6.3, java 8 251, Windows Server 2019.

We have had several theses uploaded today and approved into our DSpace
instance. However, one of the documents throws an error when you try to open
it. But if you are logged in, it works fine. There are no special
authorizations on it. It's setup for anonymous read access. Has anyone ever
come across anything like this before?

https://opus.uleth.ca/handle/10133/5726

This is a first for me. I've tried deleting the object, I've re-added it, I
had the student resubmit their PDF. I checked the database to be sure and it's
the same as anything else submitted. But it always fails to open again if we
are not logged in. Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Thanks!

RE: [dspace-tech] Re: Weird Issue with PDF Opening

2020-05-26 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Thanks Euler.

I actually just withdrew the whole item from the collection, created a new
submission with the same PDF and it worked fine. I got tired of tinkering with
it. But it was 100% the coverpage that was causing the issue. When I’m logged
in, it doesn’t try to generate the coverage and displays right. Not sure
what’s going on there. But issue was solved with a new submission.

Hi Jake,

I noticed that your repository have cover page generated upon download. I have
this problem a long time ago when the pdf is either PDF/A compliant or it is a
secured pdf where editing is not allowed. Since your repository is generating
cover page on the fly, in a way it would like to edit the original pdf to
insert the cover page. I don't know why it worked fine when you are logged in,
so I might be wrong to assume that the pdf is secured or is PDF/A compliant.

RE: [dspace-tech] Citation Page Generator

2020-11-25 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Mark,

There doesn't appear to be any issues with the permissions. Everything is
owned by the local dspace account. However, I'm not able to run any dspace
commands now. Apparently the tomcat upgrade I did has broken things.

When I try to run dspace solr-stats or dspace oai import it says it can't
access the log files, permission is denied, but the log files are all owned by
the local dspace account as well. None of the errors are showing up in my log
files either, as the solr log files are not being generated. None of my DSpace
commands seem to be working since Tomcat was updated. Same for dspace
filter-media. They all get angry with the log files.

Any thoughts?

Microsoft has ended TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.2 support for all their mail products.

Hello Humberto,

Microsoft has ended TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.2 support for all their mail products.
You need to ensure you are using TLS 1.2 or higher on your server or the
messages will fail.

[dspace-tech] Citation Page Generator

2020-11-24 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello everyone,

Dspace 6.3, Windows Server 2016, Tomcat 8, PGSQL9.6.

We've had the citation page generator turned on for a couple of years. I
upgraded Tomcat and Java last week, but even before that, some documents seemed
to be corrupted when the citation page was added to the document. If I was
logged in the document appeared, opened fine, etc.. However if I was not
logged in and I clicked the View/Open button, it opened to a blank page and
said there was a problem with the document. If I downloaded it, it saved a 0mb
file, obviously corrupted. However, I turned off the citation page feature and
everything works 100% for all the documents. Any thoughts or suggestions on
what I could be doing wrong here?

Just a quick OAI question maybe someone can help me with.

We added a field to our Dublin Core called dc.contributor.indigenous to

when we are harvested using oai_dc or qdc it's pulling it as dc.contributor.
Is there a way for it to fix this so it shows the subfields?

[dspace-tech] Weird Issue with Workflows

2023-11-09 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello Everyone,

DSpace 7.4.

In the last few days, some people can no longer see tasks in the workflow list
that they could see a few days ago. I can see everything, other accounts can
still see everything, but some accounts can not see anything. I can see the 5
items currently there, but people with the same rights as me can not see
anything in the workflow list. I've tried claiming tasks and returning them to
the pool, I've scoured the log files but there's no errors related to this.

People either see a message that says:

Your search returned no results. Having trouble finding what you're looking
for? Try putting quotes around it

Or

Error fetching results if they click on the administer workflow tab.

I've checked the logs at the exact times those people are getting the errors
and there are no warnings or errors. Not sure where to proceed from here.

2023-01-13 Thread Cameron, Jacob
The CATALINA\localhost\ROOT.xml isn't loading properly. If I copy the server
folder into the Tomcat\webapps folder and rename it Root, it's all good.

It seems odd that the HAL browser was loading but nothing worked but it all
works fine. Something to ponder on Monday I guess.

Hi Jacob,

I'd recommend checking the Tomcat logs as well. If it's a 404, that implies
that "http://localhost:8080/server; is an invalid URL in Tomcat. Maybe
something went wrong in deploying the "server" webapp to Tomcat, which would
explain why it's not loading.

Hi Jake,

I would not recommend running DSpace 6.x on anything above JDK 8. This is
because the JDK itself underwent significant changes between JDK v8 and JDK
v11. It has also never been tested on JDK v11 or above...while some features
may work, we cannot guarantee everything will. (That said, if you want to try
it out and make sure everything works for you, you can make your own decision.
It's just not been tested by the DSpace Committers.)

DSpace 7 does support JDK v11 and JDK v17 but updating the codebase to fully
support later versions of JDK was non-trivial (it involved changing thousands
of lines of code<https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/2654>).

There are free versions of JDK 8 available from OpenJDK, if Oracle is
attempting to charge you money. Oracle JDK and OpenJDK are essentially
identical (see https://www.baeldung.com/oracle-jdk-vs-openjdk)... and many
DSpace sites use OpenJDK as it is freely available.

Hi All,

Oracle is trying to bill us for using JDK8 for DSpace 6.3. Does anyone know if
Java 17 works (cause it's free to use) with DSpace 6, the handle server, etc?

RE: [dspace-tech] Issue with database migration 6.3 to 7.4

2023-01-27 Thread Cameron, Jacob
I’ve tried importing with the postgres account, using an elevated command
prompt, in pgadmin and they are all giving the same errors. It’s still
failing. I’m at a loss now. There’s a ton of tables missing when it finishes
importing.

Hi Jacob

I had a similar problem with a database I was trying to import: many /N invalid
commands. I gave my user superuser privileges and was able to import the dump
without those errors.

2023-03-22 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hi Everyone,

When I run dspace process-cleaner --completed, it runs and says 0 items have
been removed. However, I have about 120 processes that are complete. Am I
missing something? Is it not working in DSpace 7.4 any longer?

Hi Jake,

More than likely, that's the value in the "dc.identifier.uri" metadata field
for that object. You could update that for Items using the Batch Metadata
Editing tools... https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Batch+Metadata+Editing

However, if you are comfortable with SQL, the easiest fix might be to replace
all these values at the database level in the "metadatavalue" table. There's
some examples of doing that in this old question to dspace-tech:
https://groups.google.com/g/dspace-tech/c/o_sTXCJon24/m/hbAYPuvUBgAJ
(WARNING: While this is the easiest approach, I would recommend testing this
first or backing up the database first. You don't want to make a typo that
results in the wrong changes to your database.)

[dspace-tech] Creating Submission Workflows

2023-02-22 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello,

DSpace 7.4, Tomcat 9.6, Postgres 13.

I've created 5 new workflows. 4 of the 5 work fine. The 5th one seems to
throw an error in the DSpace log. It's setup the same as the other new
workflows.

It gives me a "You have not the privilege to make a new submission." error.
However, everything is named properly and showing up the way I would expect.
I've verified things, checked things over, and even tried using the traditional
input form with no changes and it still throws the error.

The error in the dspace.log is:

[dspace-tech] Wrong URI on Collection/Community Pages

2023-02-27 Thread Cameron, Jacob
Hello Everyone,

When I migrated the server to production, for some reason the old IP address is
displaying as part of the collection and community URI. I've attached a
screenshot.

Everything is pointing to https://opus.uleth.ca in the yaml file, local.cfg,
pm2 files, etc.. I'm not sure what's going on here and I've tried clearing the
cache on my PC. I've attached my files. I don't see anything in the logs that
is pointing anywhere near the old development server IP.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Jake

migrations which can fail during the upgrade to 7.x... these migrations are

There's a thread discussing this on dspace-tech here, along with "workarounds"
to skip the two problematic 5.7 migrations:
https://groups.google.com/g/dspace-tech/c/PlOA1WMvd4M/m/eBVE5RfhBgAJ

There's also a fix for this coming in the 7.5 release. In 7.5 (due Feb 20) we
have a new "./dspace database skip" command which can be used to skip
problematic migrations. See the PR at
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/8611

So, you are not the first person to hit this migration bug. An easier fix is
coming in 7.5... but in the meantime, you can use the dspace-tech link above to
workaround the issue if you want to upgrade immediately to 7.4.

Hi all,

@Tim, I think Jacob issue is caused by the way he dumped his old database and
the way he tried to restore it. Those " thousands of invalid command /N"
should've not shown up if the database was dumped in a custom binary format and
the new server database was cleaned (emptied) or even recreated before
restoring the old database int it using pg_restore (It's a must to use
pg_restore for any binary format dumps). There is a good chance for him to able
to migrate unless he is affected by the known issue you mentioned.

matter whether I import using psql or pg_restore for an sql or plain text dump.

I’m wondering if I need to upgrade from 9.6 to 13 in Postgres before it’ll fix
it. I’m sure I had to do that when I went from 1.8.3 to 6 originally. I could
be wrong. That was along time ago. But I have something about that in old
notes from that upgrade.

Hi Sean,

This issue is a known issue which some sites encounter during the upgrade to
DSpace 7 if they have previously ignored migrations which never ran during a
past 5.x ->6.x upgrade. Essentially, to summarize, there are two "5.7"
migrations which can fail during the upgrade to 7.x... these migrations are
obsolete and can be skipped over.

There's a thread discussing this on dspace-tech here, along with "workarounds"
to skip the two problematic 5.7 migrations:
https://groups.google.com/g/dspace-tech/c/PlOA1WMvd4M/m/eBVE5RfhBgAJ

There's also a fix for this coming in the 7.5 release. In 7.5 (due Feb 20) we
have a new "./dspace database skip" command which can be used to skip
problematic migrations. See the PR at
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/8611

So, you are not the first person to hit this migration bug. An easier fix is
coming in 7.5... but in the meantime, you can use the dspace-tech link above to
workaround the issue if you want to upgrade immediately to 7.4.
