[DX-CHAT] Back-up software

2007-05-27 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Just curious as to what some use for backing up files and folders

I am using IOMEGA Automatic Back-up but it's starting to get glitchy
and they no longer suppport it

What do others use? I have several flash drivesa and external HD;s
that I use as back-ups so it has to recoginze them PLUS it must allow
me to back-up to the file level as well as the folders

It doesn't necessarily have to be free/shareware, just work/

I tried Nortons Back-Up but it won;t recogize my Netgear external
storage box

Drop me a line direct

In the past several days, I have gotten in excess of 3000 e-mails all
they state is that so and so received and / or read the message

I get copies of all reponses that go through the reflectors..bounced

that have been set up by their owners to reject posts fromk the very
reflecftors that they themselves subscribed to (I delete those as
soon as I find them BTW)

So please, to help reduce the wear and tear on both my delete buttone

Is time to be modern and replace paper QSLs for QSO confirmation?

Nope. I like browsing through my old-fashioned QSLs, and I'm quite
willing to pay for that privilege. LOTW is fine as an option, but
not as the ONLY method.

I'd be against the elimination of paper QSLing personally, but to be
honest I think the League should be doing more to promote LoTW. If
you're a casual operator and remember a lot of fun, special QSOs,
paper cards are a fantastic way to do this. On the other hand, what
does a DXpedition QSL manager need with 40,000 US hard-cards, or
big-gun contest stations for that matter?

I prefer getting paper QSLs for 80 and 160m QSOs, but I'd much rather

get LoTW hits for everything else -- especially contests, or when I
run Europe or JAs from home. Unfortunately, too, LoTW is not accepted

by CQ Magazine for CQ WAZ, 5B WAZ or other similar awards, so I still

need paper cards for each zone.

One way would be is to mandate that DX Expeditions put logbook on
LoTW if they want to be counted for DXCC credit.

The problem is donations to DXpeditions would dry up, or be curtailed

severely if everything was LoTW-only.
What I'd like to see the League do is say that beginning on a
specific date down the road, a DXpedition must agree to post their
complete logs to LoTW within one year of the operation if it is to
count for DXCC.

I'd also like to see entrants to ARRL-sponsored contests either be
required to submit to LoTW, be given bonus points for doing so or be
penalized for not doing so, or better still, use the contest robot to

automatically post the logs to LoTW.

Cheers,

Peter,

Better yet when a DXpedition submits paper work for DXCC approval
they
send in a copy of the log on CD. After a set time (1 or 2 years) the

ARRL inputs the DXpedition's log into LOTW. The ARRL needs to make
this
process as painless as possible for the DXpedition.

Just my thoughts on this.

[DX-CHAT] Sorry for the rant

2007-04-16 Thread Steve-KF2TI
I know this is off topic but I feel I am among friends and hope you
understand

I am sure you have heard about the tragedy at Virginia Tech this day.
You'll hear about the initial shootings at West AJ dorm..a girl and
a Resident Assistant

The resident Assistant's name was Ryan Clark, AKA Stack. He played
the Baritone horn for the Marching Virginians along with my son and
had his whole life ahead of him He came to the aid of the girl after
she was shot and was shot for his efforts and died of his wounds

I know this because he was a close friend of my son Josh and attended
Josh's wedding last September

My son is 600 miles away and I wish I could be him right now but I
can't and as a parent it hurts to not be able to hold him

You'll hear a lot about those that were shot and those that died, but
on this day, I wanted to share the name of one of those that left
this world too soon

Thank you

[DX-CHAT] Pls spread the word

2007-03-05 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Please help spread the word:

Due to a recent flood of bogus subscribers (and I mean almost 100 per
day between the 2 reflectors), Urb has instituted (finally :-) ) a 2
step subscription program

Step 1 requires you to input your e-mail address (the one you'll be
allowed to receive and post) with

Step 2 will be receipt of an e-mail (at the subscribed address) that
requires you to verify that you did indeed subscribe, by clicking on
a URL link

Once that is done, you'll get a welcome message and the rest is
automatic

I realize that this is a tad more than what was needed in the past,
but it was taking more and more time to delete the bogus addresses

If, in a pinch, you need assistance, I am always available to help

Have a good DX day and remember...Just because BS7H is coming on the
air doesn't mean we have to act like goofs AND remember this..if you
hear me trying to work them, keep it down to a dull roar until I make
my contact ;-)

[DX-CHAT] Quick Disconnect-WTB

2006-12-04 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Perhaps someone has one of these lying around, gathering dust and
would like to trade it for some $$$

A number of years ago, Texas Bugcatcher sold a rather large, solid
brass quick disconnect. It was about 3 tall, with a knurlled knob
about 1 1/2 in diameter. It consisted of 3 pieces. There are now
smaller versions (chrome plated) that are being sold at hamfests. I
do not want these.

TBC stopped selling these about 5 years ago.

Should anyone have one of these or know of someone, I am in the
market for at least 3 complete units.

I have pictures if anyone thinks they have one, but is no sure, that
I can send.

It does not use any springs and the 2 pieces have to be screwed

Good afternoon, since losing the Jeep (15 mpg) for a Subaru Wagon

Icom 706/turbo tuner/Little Targheel antenna (using Tri-Magnet
mounts..I had to, no place to mount antenna brackets and I don't like
those ball mount thingies, as the car washes keep yanking them off)

What I would like is some advise as I have definte fuel pump noise,
primarily on 20 meters about every 3-4 kc about S4 that goes away
when you turn off the engine

K2BJ's site is down or off completely and he had some great ideas
posted there. I went to K0BG's site and he mentions fuel pumps but
oiffers no fix (unless I missed it)

Anyone have experience in either eliminating or reducing fuel pump

From the ARRL site:

Members (including foreign, QSL Managers, or managers for
DXpeditions) should enclose payment of $4.00 for the first ½ pound of
cards or portion thereof--approximately 75 cards weigh 1/2 pound.
$8.00 for one pound, the fee rate then increases at the rate of $4.00
for each additional ½ pound (i.e. a package containing 1 ½ pounds of
cards should include the fee of $12.00 and so on). A package of only
Ten (10) cards or fewer costs only $1.00. Eleven (11) to Twenty (20)
cards are $2.00. Twenty-One (21) to Thirty (30) cards are $3.00.

Subject:[DX-CHAT] working a Dxpedition- yes its legal!

Please see story below from ARRL.
DX still king for 90-year-old radio amateur (Mar 2, 2006) -- Veteran DXer and
contester John Thompson, W1BIH, has been largely out of the game since
disposing of his tower, antennas and linear and moving into a retirement
community in Massachusetts last year. But the DXCC Honor Roll member held
onto his transceiver and his desire to work the few rare ones he lacked. When
the 3Y0X Peter I DXpedition got under way in February, Don Greenbaum, N1DG,
did his older friend a good turn by taking Thompson to his station February 9
for a crack at 3Y0X. During the last two Peter I Island DXpeditions, Thompson
was at his winter home, PJ9JT, so Peter I has been among his most wanted. It
only took about 30 minutes for W1BIH to make himself heard through the fray
on 15-meter SSB and exchange reports. We got him! Thompson exclaimed
seconds after the quick QSO. Greenbaum captured the occasion on video. Once
confirmed and submitted to DXCC, the 3Y0X QSO will elevate W1BIH into a tie
 for second

Seems to me if one isn't home to serve as control operator, then the actual
operator would be obligated to use his/her own callsign even if it's the DX
operator's gear. I haven't bothered going into the Part 97 Rules to determine
 the specifics on this.

I might also have an ethical problem with this, even if this is a loophole in
DXCC rules, since it's not really working yourself; rather, it's you working
your own equipment and somebody else.

There's also the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle which, in essence states
that one object (or person) cannot be in two places at the same time. =-O

It took me several years to make contact with CQ Zone Two from home even
though I have run mini-DXpeditions to VO2 land in Zone Two.

All this said, I *DO* talk to myself a lot these days in my encroaching old
 age. :-[

Good and Bad DXpeditions:

Good = You worked it
Great = You worked it on all bands and modes including moon bounce
SSTV lower sideband per your carefully detailed scheds where they
were QRV ONLY for you and then went QSY
Excellent = Great + you got instant confirmation on-line and via LOTW
or quick reply (a week?) to your paper (gasp!) QSL
Lousy = You're not sure if you worked it and the thought of actually
waiting until the ops get home safely and the logs are checked upsets
your stomach AND you wonder if the precious single green stamp you
included with your SAE will be worth it
Bad = Lousy + You never really worked it and complain to everyone and
anyone about it and your misspent youth*

In actuality, the constitution gives you the right to express

It does give the individual the right to express themselves on
private property IE: you may hand out anti-government petitions
on a public street, but you may not hand them out standing on my

[DX-CHAT] 3 Steve's Recap

2005-12-28 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Good evening all. Just returned from the 13th annual 3 Steve's and
Kurt W1AW expedition and boy are my arms tired

But did we have fun. We got to play with equipment that we couldn't
afford. I got to use the stations Kenwood TS-480 for the 1st time.
What an interesting little rig...good quality sound and a lot of
buttons to push

1st..over 580 q's were put in the log with apporximately 40
individual calls being eligable for that coveted WAS certificate

The bands were all over the place in fact, we worked more people off
the sides of the beams than head-on. Unfortuanately the sunspots
were not too kind to Europe..just a few q's

Thanks for those that spotted us on the packet cluster. We moved up
into the General bands after a while and this allowed people to
follow us

Most (at least from my 15 meter station) were direct shots into W5,
mostly Texas and when Andrew quit fiddling with the tower my antenna
was on, into the Caribbean. 20 meters was hot as was 17, but 30
meter CW was smoking

In a few days, the Steve's and Kurt website:

http://68.196.94.146:888/

will have the logs and you can check for yourself + there will be
pictures YIKES!! Just remember, the camera adds a few dozen pounds

You'll be able to see how the q's are broken down.

The lucky guys with the Hooters gal are Andrew N2IFB, who valiantly
tried for 2 and 6 meters contacts and his friend Eric, Andrew going
for code upgrade and Eric going for a code ticket by March 2006

For those of your qualifying for WAS, no qsl is needed. I will pull
the calls from the log and print certificates, get them signed (the
hard part) and then will get them in the mail. In the past, it seems
they get mailed right around Dayton (May)

Again, thanks to everyone who could hear us (I know that NJ is a hard
copy) and look for us again in May, either on our wya to and from
Dayton OR possibly /KP2 at the qth of Brian and Ann KP2HC and KP2YL

3 Steve's in Speedos?? Ohhh my, the thought is mind numbing

A happy and healthy 2006 from the 5 of us to the 1000's of you Good
DX all around and we'll see you all next year

[DX-CHAT] News

2005-12-15 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Greetings and salutations fellow DX'ers. Steve, KF2TI, here with
some newsworthy items…….let's go to press.

NJDXA 15 Members Award

Did you know that there is an award for working NJDXA members? Well
if not, now you do. If you work 15 NJDXA members within a 12 month
period and submit the logs to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), the North Jersey
DX Association will send you a beautiful multi-color certificate
(suitable for framing). It not easy since there is no warning when
or where we NJDXA'ers will pop up on a band or mode…But then again,
that's why it's so prestigious. So line and sign up today

9th Annual WAS Award

And speaking of prestigious…do you know what WAS stands for? If you
guessed Worked All States, you'd be half correct. The other half who
answered Worked all Steve's would also get a prize. Steve, KF2TI,
Steve, KB2ENF, Steve, N2IFA and Kurt, W2MW (who we also call Steve)
will again be taking their Dx-pedition to Newington, CT and getting
W1AW on the air for this rare award, after a year off. December 28,
2005 starting at 1 PM EST is when we are planning to get 30CW, 20M
and hopefully 10 and 15 SSB up and running. Work any of the 4
Steve's and we will send you a beautiful multi-color certificate
(suitable for framing). We don't even need your QSL as we will have
copies of the log and work off those.

Several years ago we gave Kurt a terminal disease. I forget if it
was train or Tower (for those from Cleveland). The following year
after a remarkable recovery, Kurt's health returned, but it cost him
his arms and he sent CW..QLF (ask for a jpg for the photo!!!).
Well after we found new arms, Kurt took it upon to try and win a
Darwin by testing the theory of falling objects. Kurt took himself
and a hammer and fell off a roof, falling 20 feet and sure enough,
they hit the ground at the same time. Of course, the hammer made out
a lot better than Kurt did. The fall wasn't so bad, it was that
sudden stop at the end, stated W2MW, or THUD as he is know known.
Who knows what mysterious ailments KurtSteve will develop this
year??!!!

This award is rare since the only time any of the 4 Steve's can be
found on the air at the same time is either the W1AW event or
traveling in the middle of the night the weekend of the Dayton
Hamvention.

One word of note: keep your eyes tuned to that radio some time in
May when the Steve's (depending on a whole bunch of factors…but not
O'Riley's..get it??) may just be operating KP2..hmm

Anyway, just a couple things to keep DX'ers busy during the solar

Re: [DX-CHAT] Plug in drives

2005-12-13 Thread Steve-KF2TI
I have tried and it wasn't pretty. I forgot that when you install a
program in the computer it does things to the registry. When I tried
to access the program (some business software) on the flash drive it
didn't work

I utlimately installed the program from the drive onto the computer
and everything was OK. Then I uninstalled everything when I was done

If you remember that (AND) remember to uninstall the flash drive
when you remove it, it should work OK

It does work great a a backup for data

[DX-CHAT] (Fwd) [DX-NEWS] Packet Cluster Problems: K1TTT's Response

2005-11-15 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Part 2, the stoiry continues

--- Forwarded message follows ---
From: Jerry Keller - K3BZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: \(Reflector\) DX-NEWS dx-news@njdxa.org
Subject:[DX-NEWS] Packet Cluster Problems: K1TTT's Response
Date sent: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 10:05:56 -0500

The other source of #cqdx spots are from dxsummit (see
http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/) and I think a couple other web
cluster sources (mostly for vhf spots I think). Again, n6rt's
software grabs those spots and puts them into the #cqdx irc channel,
at this point they are identified by the -@ ssid which you will see
on
the dxsummit site for spots put in from the web interface.
Unfortunately some cluster nodes don't like this ssid so it has to be
stripped before those spots are put into the normal cluster network,
this is done in the ar-cluster software. Ar-cluster also contains
it's own dxsummit spot collector, this is delayed even more and only
checks the site every couple of minutes so those collected spots are
usually blocked as dupes from other sources. However at times when
#cqdx is down or there are other connection problems those may be
seen
on the backbone as coming from nodes like 'web/xx'.

Now that you know where the spots come from and how they are
identified, on to the next step... tracking them. This is something
that I have published after every major contest for the last couple
of
years on cq-contest where mal frequently complains about packet use
in
contests. When dxsummit started it was pretty much stand alone, then
came the #cqdx and ar-cluster and other user logging programs that
accessed it and allowed automatic posting of spots there. Then some
of the troublemakers who for obvious reasons like to stay anonymous
found out that they could post comments there that couldn't be
traced.
While the admins there did lock out some calls and added some
filters, that would not stop determined disrupters... it never has
and
never will, lock someone out of the cluster system or filter their
favorite words and they will find another way to get in, and they
have
taught email spammers some lessons on how to change spelling just
enough to bypass filters, witness how many ways you see c.i,al,i.s
spelled in your spam filtered mail every day! Those are the types we
are up against... the anonymous cluster spammers.

Enough of that, back to the story... Remember that call from the
secret service? Well, the source of the threats they were tracking
was from dxsummit and that the only way to track them was to get the
server logs from there. Well, best I can tell some administrators of
dxsummit must have had some calls from someone who got a call from
someone who must have gotten a call from the secret service... a few
days later an ip tracking page showed up on dxsummit. You can see it
at: http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dxsinput.html As soon as this page
showed up and got some press coverage in the contest community there
was a rapid drop in abuses during contests where contest cheaters
were
spotting themselves using bogus calls. The history of this is
available in the archives of the cq-contest reflector... that mal
knows well I'm sure. Now, as mal has noted, there was a sudden surge
in bogus stuff from there a while ago... this happened after the
dxsummit site suffered a server crash. There was a month or so when
it was down completely, then when it came back they must have gone
back to older software and the ip page wasn't working. It took about
6 months of communications with various contacts in Europe to get
them
to put the page back and it is just starting to take hold again I
think.

Unfortunately there will always be some miscreants who will use cheap
internet accounts or other methods to avoid being identified just to
cause trouble. There is no way to stop them, block them in one place
and they show up somewhere else with fresh attacks. The best thing
that can be done is to ignore them, don't respond and they eventually
get bored and fade away. Respond to them, make threats that you will
track them down, and they just keep going. This is an unfortunate
trait of some people that shows itself whenever there is a method of
hiding your identity from the masses... some people will take
advantage of that anonymity to stir the pot, make personal attacks,
or
just otherwise disrupt society.

Now, how does this help? Well, it lets you know that mal is trying
to
just inflame the situation by spreading partial truths and leaving
out
information that he should be well aware of. You are invited to
review
recent discussions (most recently starting after cqww ssb) on the
cq-contest reflector to see his comments, including a call for a
complete shutdown of the spotting network, and the responses to it on
there.

Oh, and the next step??? Well unfortunately in most cases even with
the ip address of a miscreant either from dxsummit or a 'normal'
cluster log

[DX-CHAT] Quik DDisconnects

2005-06-03 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Can anyone recommend a GOOD quality quik disconnect for my Lil
Tarheel antenna

I am using a Hustler QD-2 and am not satisfied with its ability to
hold the antenna still..it seems to rattle as I drive and I notice
that this translates into noise

I have tried to contact Texas Bugcatcher direct but they don't seem
to respond, so if anyone knows a bugcatcher distributor taht would be
appreciated. They have a solid brass device that screws together.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks

[DX-CHAT] Digital Rotor diplay

2005-05-09 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Thanks to the gentle man who responded that my flickering display is
normal. I contacted Rotornorm who confirmed this:

Hi Steve,
the bouncing display is a function of trying to digitize and analog
circuit. The digital display wants to resolve to a higher level than
the wire wound pot and the analog circuit are capable of sending to
it. You see it on almost all of the digital display units - I Notice
it particularly on the HDR300 displays. RotorNorm

So I guess I can be less paranoid yipp, at least the beam no
longer pinwheels in a moderate wind

[DX-CHAT] Hygain rotor control

2005-05-07 Thread Steve-KF2TI
I just finished swapping out an Alliance rotor (that had given up the
ghost) with a Ham-IV and the digital control unit.

Question for anyone having this type of control unit:

Is the 3 digit display suppose to flucuate? IOW, at rest, for
example, the display will bounce back nbetween 136 and 137 or 000 and
360. Is this normal? There is no wind to move the beam and I am not
a sure that this is suppose to happen.

Other than that, everything seems to work perfectly, including the
brake delay unit

Perhaps someone with more experience than a few hours can shed some
light?? Am I being paranoid or just overly curious

you can help decide
\
Thanks in advance

[DX-CHAT] (Fwd) December 29th, 2004 - Great Day at W1AW

2004-12-31 Thread Steve-KF2TI

--- Forwarded message follows ---
Date sent: Fri, 31 Dec 2004 10:22:39 -0500
From: Kurt W. Zimmerman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings all;
I thought I'd provide you a recap of the 3 Steves and a Kurt
DXpedition to W1AW. Yes, as we always do, we had a great time. To
start the day we headed to Lentini's to shop around and to pick up
some odds ends. Then off for a cuisine lunch at Hooters and then
back to the league. Joe NJ1Q was all ready for us having all of the
computers networked together so we can keep track of everyone while
we
operated. The logging software of choice was Writelog, which was
quite simple to use.

Bands were not in that bad of shape. We managed to put 460 Q's in
the log, operating as W1AW/90, which I might add is a real pain to
send CW.

Here is the breakdown, by band with our Q count:

BandQ's ModeOperator
40m 49 SSB Steve - KF2TI
30m 95 CW Kurt - W2MW
20M 174 SSB Steve - KB2ENF
17m 13 SSB Steve - ? (a drop in visitor named Steve. No
kidding)
15M 107 SSB Steve - N2IFA
6m 22 SSB Andrew - N2IFB (Son of Steve - N2IFA)

The only modes we operated were SSB and CW. KF2TI was to busy
collecting his DXCC Honor Roll award from the league as well as
working W1AW from his car to play on other modes besides SSB.

The following stations will be getting the coveted 3 Steves and a
Kurt
certificate (suitable for framing)...

KF2TI, KO7X,WB2LEZ,AF2C,W0JM,N2WB,WB4CKO,N1DL,K5WPN and VA5DX

Some of the local stations that we worked are Jeff - WO5D, Steve -
K0LBY and Bob - W2WG

I'd like to comment that if you have not had the opportunity to
travel
to the league; it is well worth the trip. The station manager, Joe -
NJ1Q is very helpful and is an all around great person. You have the
option just to visit the station or play with some REALLY NEAT, state
of he art equipment (except for the old Icom 781 that I've been using
for many years ;-) ).

One final note. I've been working to get the 3StevesKurt website up
again. When I do that I will have more pictures to share with all of
you.

I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.

Best of 73;
Kurt - W2MW

[DX-CHAT] Responses-Rotor problem

2004-12-22 Thread Steve-KF2TI
In regards to my plea, I did get a number of very useful hints and
tips (all thanked for individually)

It definiely was the Alliance rotor. I climbed up onto the rook and
can turn the entire assembly in one direction by hand, so something
broke. I guess after 13+ years it's entitled.

The consensus was.Ham IV was the way to go, with the brake delay
as a needed option and the EZ Rotor interface as a nice present to
myself should I wish to spend the $$$...and DX4WIN does handle it
hmmhello santa

And the place most highly recommended, for the best bang for the buck
was Norm's Rotor Service. A good rebuilt for a fairly decent price,
so a project for the spring

Thanks again

Enjoy the holiday weekend

C U all next year

[DX-CHAT] Opening the provebial can o'worms

2004-12-21 Thread Steve-KF2TI
The recent wind storm we had here in NNJ (average speed 30, with
gusts measured at the tower of 50+), finally took its toll on my very
old Alliance UD73 rotator. It spins nicely with a gentle push on the
housing.

SInce I bought it used in 1993, it is probably better to replace, so
I have narrowed down to Hy-Gain's CD45ll or the Ham IV. One handles
8.5 sq ft in-tower, the other 15 sq ft, with an accompaning increase
in dollars.

I am not sure what the slecs for the UD73 3 but as stated, it worked
up until recently and that includes 3 hurricanes and numerous
blizzards and high wind conditions...anyway, here's what's on the
roof

Mosley TA53 with 40m add-on (approx 8.5 sq ft)
Cushcraft 3 ele 6m Beam (approx 1.8 sq ft)

all mounted on 12' of 1 1/2 pipe

The rotator is mounted in tower and I am using a thrust bearing

Soany comments, good bad or indifferent would be appreciated.

As to how I am going to change this all out is concern for warmer
weather

Thanks

What would you assembled masses consider the probability (educated
guessSWAG??) that Yemen, 7O, will be on the air in the next year.
I am rapidly approaching retirement and me the missus are looking at
buying a motor home and traveling until we decide not to travel any
 more.

Doing so will likely result in selling the home and getting rid of the
tower/beam, a few hundred pounds of 'stuff' and maybe the IC756ProII
 OR the 706 MkII.

Anyway, since the last country I need to make Top 'o d' Roll is the
elusive 7), I wonder if I should start selling off now or wait a while
 for a possible opportunity.

 Ideas?

BTW, I have learned one or two things recently...

 1) Kids don't think it is funny at all when you tell them that you
plan to travel until you are unable to continue and then you will pull
up in front of their house and say, Here I am!

 2) Be kind to your kids because they determine which nursing home you
 will die in!
