[Dx4win] LOTW Support

2014-01-05 Thread Dick Flanagan
Just as a point of information, the TQSL log signing application has
been completely re-written to make the process more secure and easier to
interface with. This wouldn't affect reading LOTW records, but I
understand it makes the log submission process easier to automate.

Information on integrating it into a logging program can be found at

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-07 Thread Barry
When I got a new laptop with Win7 a year ago (XP prior to that) I had to
update from v4.07 to 8.xx, as some v4 features didn't work with win7.

I was quite surprised to find little had changed over those 10+ years.
However, as I'm fairly inactive these days, I can deal with it :.)

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-07 Thread Bud Semon N7CW
  <>

Since we all have opinions, I guess I will put mine out there.

I like the LoTW interface. I have a significant number of logs from
different locations in my master DX4Win log and each has to be treated
differently by TQSL. So an automatic upload doesn't make sense to me. The
number of "clicks" is so small now as to be trivial.

The easy ability to handle logs from different locations and to generate
reports that either combine or ignore those locations is also a plus. A
number of years ago, I looked at the DXLab Suite and there was no way to
handle this issue - perhaps it has changed now. But when I politely
queried the author about a way to handle my problem, I received a very
short, very curt reply - Not now and Not ever. That ended any chance of my
switching to his software.

My occasional "off the record" inquiries to other ops about the DXLab Suite
have resulted in comments similar to what Dave, N4QS wrote. I know there
are a number of folks that swear by it. It's great that we have so many
choices and I really hope that Paul continues to support it, even at the
level he is supporting it now.

I understand all of the requests made by Lou, N2TU (although I don't agree
they are all enhancements) except the handling of CW Skimmer. Can someone
explain to me what that is about?

And lastly, along with the other comments, I have to say a huge THANK YOU
to Jim for all his support over the years.

I don't normally get into "logger wars" but can't let this pass.

Every logger has unique features in its user interface that some
like and that others despise. However, DXKeeper's user interface
is one of the best - hands down - user ergonomics are superb.

DXLab Suite uses a multiple application interface so many of the
"features" - particularly integration with transceivers and
accessories - are found in other parts of the "suite". This
provides the opportunity for the user to learn one piece of the
suite at a time and install only those features he/she needs.
It also allows its developer to improve one feature without the
risk of breaking others.

DX4WIN's relative weaknesses are on the reporting side. It doesn't fully
support the online DXCC applications process and Lotw uploads could be
improved. The Submission report cannot be exported to ADIF format. There would
always be plenty of other enhancements that could be added, but Paul seems
content to keep the program stable at this point in time. Sometimes stability
and realiability are not all bad! But yes, I would like to see Paul work on

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-07 Thread Lou Dietrich

Kostas,

You are 100% correct. If Jim AD1C didn't supply the support, I would be
gone. Thank goodness Jim has stuck with us for so long.

DX4WIN is a remarkably stable although feature poor application and the
users deserve some attention which, for what ever reason, appears to
have waned. I, like a lot of others, have been loyal DX4WIN users since
the beginning and have stuck with DX4WIN even as user requests have
fallen on deaf ears.

Automatic cluster start on boot up shouldn't be that hard to implement!
Nor seamless LOTW interface. Nor enhanced rotor control. Nor reports
which show confirmed via LOTW, card or both. Nor is integration with CW
Skimmer. Nor many of the other enhancements requested.

We all understand that the author of DX4WIN cannot make a living on
DX4WIN. That is a given. However, DX4WIN is woefully behind the
technology curve and paying users deserve (and have earned) updates.

I, for one, will be staying with DX4WIN as long as Jim AD1C provides
support or until I find looking at the rather bland, feature poor DX4WIN
displays turn me off. (I am getting close!)

Paul, we need to know your plans for DX4WIN. Are you going to update it?
Are you gathering user requests to be released at some later (near?)
date? Or should we users plan to move onto another platform?

Respectfully,

Lou N2TU

Is DX4WIN not creating enough revenue for the founder to keep more current with
features and needed improvements? Thats usually the reason, too busy making
more money doing other things I for one would pay more for updates if that
would get them more often and with more features; like my request for showing
your beam heading on the polar world map with settable beam width

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-06 Thread Dick Flanagan

Hi, Guy.

This is from a recent posting on the NCDXF Chat forum:

"DXLab handles LOTW perfectly. Once I decide to update my LOTW account
at the ARRL, I simply make one or two mouse clicks. DXLab handles all
the ADIF conversions, logs onto my LOTW account uploads the data, and
then logs off.

"Same thing happens when I want to sync up DXLab with any new QSL's I've
received through LOTW. As easy as DXBase was, DXLab is much easier."

From what I have read the author of DXLab is very much aware of the
strengths, limitations and current problems with the LOTW system and has
no desire to increase those problems through indiscriminate uploading.
I have long felt the DX4WIN-LOTW-DX4WIN process could be automated and
it sounds like DXLab has been able to do that.

While this is not the proper forum to discuss the pros and cons of
another logging program, I think my question regarding the future of
DX4WIN is a valid one. I have been loyal to DX4WIN for a very very long
time and I want to stay with it, but technology has always been a moving
target and we all must move with it or be left behind.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-06 Thread Dave Sharred
I think Dicks point is a fair one; when you look in a wider context.

Some people would like the ability to upload more frequently; this is down
to personal preference. Other programs offer this.
Some people would prefer to see automatic connection (and reconnection) to
your favourite cluster, that DX4Win doesn’t support. Other programs do.
There are some bug fixes / enhancements that have been mentioned on this
reflector, too.

I am aware that there are now other programs that might look better, have
other features; and have so far stuck with DX4Win for 10 years plus. Problem
is, with no visibility of if it is being developed, others will start to
migrate away, and look at other offerings, potentially depleting our current
user base, and long term viability of this product

Hi Dick,
What do you mean with ¨seamless integration with LOTW¨ ?

If you mean auto uploading after each qso then I hope you are aware of the
problems they had and still have at LoTW, Auto-uploading means operator
skills and how to setup everything correct
not like many do and upload their entire log again and again.

I like the way it is now and certainly when you manage more then one call

THIS IS MY OPINION

As a long-time user of DX4WIN (since V2.0) it pains me to say I am
considering changing to DXLab because of its apparently seamless integration
with LOTW.

DX4WIN V8 was released over three years ago, with the V8.05 being released
two years ago. Does anyone know if DX4WIN V9 will be adding more LOTW
support? Has anyone heard if there will even be a V9?
