Zack I use dropbox. In my professional role, I am an IT Director and have found that dropbox meets all of our security requirements. I can send a sign up link if you like. By the way. Hey Alan, I use Carbonite. Unlimited back-up for the price. Once initial back-up done, don't notice it. It defaults to some folders/files so need to add DX4WIN Save folder. But is just a right click to add/remove stuff and little orange/green dots tell you if backup pending or done. Check for discounts. I did a 3-year package. Use me as reference and I get month or so free added to my time. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Backup
Hi Alan es all, The best solution to safeguard your entire DX4Win save directory is by installing Dropbox on your computer. Here is the url = http://www.dropbox.com/. It is FREE and it works great. After you installed dropbox on your computer you do the same thing on your laptop (if you have one) and share the DX4Win save file. It is not neccesary to have dropbox on a second computer but i do this because i want to have all my data syncronised on both my PC and laptop. In DX4Win preferences at the QSO tab you need to define the secundary backup directory. The path is use looks like this: C:\Users\Vanderydt Theo\Dropbox\DX4Win Save. Now the good thing about Dropbox is that both your computer can crash and your save directory will still be available in dropbox because your file is somewere in cyberspace on a remote site. No one, except you, has access to this file so no need to worry that some one else can play around with your valuable data. This is hopefully what you have been looking for. Guys, I take my Save directory and attach it to an email and send it to my Yahoo email account. I then move it to my DX4WIN folder on Yahoo. It is free (I like free) and virtually indestructible. Yes, it requires an internet connection...but then again so does this mail list! And if anyone wants to hack my DX4WIN folder on Yahoo, they can have at it!...and if Yahoo goes out of business, then we are more trouble than looking for a place to back-up our DX4WIN files! CD-ROM and thumb drives are great, as long as you store them outside the home. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Backup
Thanks Roger, I already back up to an in house 1 TB ext HD. Problem is IF (Heaven forbid) the house burns down or my computer stuff is stolen the stuff on the in home ext HD would be gone also. I have no problem with an internet connection. I use COX Cable. It is very reliable and is always online. I believe a good online backup provider would have good enough security to prevent hacking. The company going out of business (or being unreliable) is a possibility. I tried QUICKEN online backup that comes with the Quicken program. When I filled up my basic allotment of storage and attempted to buy more I ran into a brick wall with their tech support in India. We went around and around and I finally told them to cancel my account. I responded to Theo directly that DROPBOX looks like a good way to go but is expensive at $120 a year. I am now looking at CARBONITE and MOZY mentioned on Jim, AD1C's, web pages. I am also curious if anyone has any experience with SUGARSYNC offered by Best Buy. -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Roger D Johnson Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 6:52 AM To: DX4Win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Backup I'm skeptical about storing info on one of these online services. 1. [Dx4win] DX4WIN Backup
I just had a bad scare thinking I had lost the last 4 days of my log entries. What I had done was to save my log in an ext HD as I do every few days as a backup using SAVE AS. But then I forgot to switch back to the DX4WIN/SAVE folder. I was out of town for a few days and when I returned I made about 10 QSO's and saved my log when I exited DX4WIN. When I reopened it I had a gap of the missing 10 QSO's. I finally discovered where the missing QSO's were on the ext HD and manually added them to the log and properly saved them. I have an Iomega ext HD with QuickProtect 1.0.2.54. It is set up to save my D4W files whenever any changes are made so anytime I exit D4W the changes are saved. But when I tried to find my backed up DX4WIN file I couldn't find it. All it would allow me to do is do a complete restore of all the files it had backed up. That is FB if I had a complete HD crash and needed to restore ALL my docs, jpgs, etc. But it won't allow me to find just the DX4WIN/K7ACZ.DXL files and copy just those files. So I needed to find another way of automatically backing up the DX4WIN/K7ACZ.DXL files. It seems the Iomega back up program would allow me to do this but I haven't been able to figure it out. I now discovered a feature I was not aware of before. Within DX4WIN itself if you go to FILE: PREFERENCES: QSO WINDOW (3rd tab from top on right edge of window) on the bottom of the page is a box marked SECONDARY BACKUP DIRECTORY. You can use this to do a back up of your DX4WIN/K7ACZ.DXL files whenever you exit or do a SAVE. It is not mentioned on Jim's, AD1C's App note 6 pages or on the DX4WIN main website or in any HELP files I can find. But this works great and could save your butt! I set up a separate folder (DX4WIN_BACKUP) on my ext HD and set up the box marked SECONDARY BACKUP DIRECTORY to this folder. I have confirmed when I do a SAVE my .CTY, .DXL, .~TY, .~XL files are saved in this ext HD folder. I would also like to save the .CFG file but haven't figured how to do it. [Dx4win] DX4WIN Backup
Hello to all, Every so often I do something really dumb, today is one of those times. I was working on a program bug and my computer locked up. No problem, Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart. Then I opened dx4win and of course I got the backup message but here's where the NO-Brainer steps in. I hit NO not remembering that I worked 4 new ones on 6M yesterday so of course the computer does what my wife won't, it carries on with my command... Question of the day, Can I recover that file and restore the backup with the contacts from yesterday or are they in never never land? Thanks, Ron the OOPS I can't believe I did that!! N4GFO

Be sure Dx4Win is closed.Go into Window Explorer / program files/ save folder and look for you log file name with ~xl extension.
