[ECOLOG-L] Explorer in Greenland hoping to help get data for you

2017-06-14 Thread Gregg Treinish
Hi all,

One of our Adventure Scientists Ambassadors will be traveling to Greenland
and is offering his skills to get any data you might need from his trip.

Mike has participated in a number of projects for Adventure Scientists in
the past and consistently works to make his travels about more than just
adventure.

He will be in Greenland traveling on the east coast, a span of 400 miles of
coast from just south of Timmiarmiut to Thor's Land to Tasiilaq. He will
be leaving July 6th.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if anything he can do while there that
would be helpful to you. In the past, Mike has collect scat, rock, water,
and snow samples for various partners of ours. He's also geotagged photos
of polar bears and is excited to help!

Also, we are constantly searching for new project ideas. If you have data
collection needs anywhere on Earth, we are here to help. Please fill in
this form

if you want to learn more about our work and have an idea. We are
specifically looking for projects where:

1. The project addresses an environmental issue to which solutions have
previously been data limited.

2. There is a clear pathway from data collection to conservation or
management outcomes.

3. There is a clear need for Adventure Scientists' network.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!

[ECOLOG-L] Samples from around the world.

2016-09-07 Thread Gregg Treinish
Dear Ecolog,

Imagine if there was a way to collect specimens from thousands of tree
species around the world, to gather water samples from Antarctica to the
Amazon, or scat samples from anywhere on Earth. Now imagine that it didn't
take you extra time to make this happen.

This is now possible through our network of volunteer adventure scientists.
<http://www.adventurescience.org/project-management.html> By leveraging
the unique skills of these outdoor adventurers, we are able to gather
difficult-to-obtain data, at any scale, anywhere.

For us, data quality is key as this enables the rigorous analysis and
uncovering of science-based solutions. We ensure that our data is of the
highest quality by developing our protocols with our scientific partners,
applying a robust training regimen, as well as testing and monitoring our
volunteers to verify they meet the needed standards. The projects we
develop rely on the outdoor adventure community because they (1) have
outdoor survival skills and the ability to travel far and wide in the
backcountry, (2) pay close attention to detail, (3) are creative problem
solvers, and (4) are able to share their experiences via the rich tradition
of storytelling that is at the heart the outdoor community.

We will work with you to build project-specific protocols. We then recruit,
train and manage volunteers from our worldwide network who collect the
needed data.

Feel free to write <projectid...@adventurescience.org> or call with your
project ideas and we look forward to getting you the data you need.

Cheers,

G

[ECOLOG-L] Winter 2015/2016 RFP period open

2015-06-29 Thread Gregg Treinish
Dear Ecolog,

We are currently accepting partnership proposals
http://www.adventurescience.org/project-management.html for the winter
2015/2016 field season.

Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation
http://www.adventurescience.org/(ASC) is a nonprofit organization that
mobilizes the outdoor community to collect scientific information.
Essentially, we create SWAT teams to get you the data you need from the
most challenging places on the planet.

We are a full data collection service provider, building projects from the
ground up. With each project we address our partners' specific questions
that inform species and habitat management. We recruit, train and manage
skilled volunteers saving our partners time, money and effort.

Citizen science is one of the most rapidly growing fields within the
scientific community. However, the focus in these volunteer driven research
efforts is often on the education of the volunteer. At ASC, we exist to
get our partners the data they need to inform decision making. Our emphasis
is on recruiting individuals who have the proven skills needed to plan and
execute successful expeditions, because these skills are transferable to
successful scientific data collection. The same attention to detail,
ability to creatively problem solve, and wherewithal to persevere in
difficult environments ensures success in both fields.

Please visit our project management page
http://www.adventurescience.org/project-management.html to learn more and
share your data needs with our team.

Cheers,

[ECOLOG-L] 3 Expeditions volunteering to collect data

2013-10-31 Thread Gregg Treinish
Dear Ecolog,

As many of you know ASC is a nonprofit that links scientists with adventure
athletes offering to collect data from remote corners of the globe. Below
are THREE athletes who have come to us looking for science projects.
Please let me know if you could benefit from any of these.

Thanks,
Gregg

1)* Copper Canyon, northern Mexico *- 11/15- 12/15/2013 - Backpacking

The total distance of the traverse will be between 360 and 400 miles (644
km). We estimate the journey will take us between three and four weeks,
during which time we will be resupplying on three occasions. The traverse
will be a combination of hiking, canyoneering, packrafting, and
bushwhacking. Our proposed route will link together all of the region’s
major canyons and will take us from the region’s northwest corner to its
southeastern limits.

2) *Murray River, Australia *- 11/16/13-7/1/2014 - Kayaking

I am attempting the first full ascent of the Murray River in Australia,
kayaking for 6 months upstream. Covering 2,520km I start in the Southern
Ocean and finish at the source, followed by the summit of Mt. Kosciuszko.

3) * Mekong and Srepok Rivers in Cambodia and Vietnam *- 12/10/13- 2/1/2014
- Paddling

Two of us will be paddling all or most of the Srepok River beginning in
Vietnam. Because of logistical issues we might start a bit lower but no
lower than Mereuch Cambodia. We will then paddle to the Mekong where we
plan to take a bus to the border with Laos and continue paddling down the
Mekong to the South China Sea where we will paddle up the coast to Vung Tau
which marks the end of our 750 mile, 40-50 day expedition.

[ECOLOG-L] RIver Kayaker in Pacific NW willing to collect data.

2013-06-03 Thread Gregg Treinish
Dear Ecolog and Diatomers,

As many of you know ASC is a nonprofit that links adventure athletes with
scientists who could benefit from citizen science data collection. Below
are THREE athletes who have come to us looking for science projects.
Please let me know if you could benefit from any of these.

Thanks,
Gregg

1) Pacific Northwest- Ongoing- Kayaking

I'm a whitewater kayaker in the Pacific Northwest, I generally run high
gradient, remote creeks in the Cascades or Coast Range of Oregon and
Washington. I also have extensive rafting/kayaking experience throughout
the Western U.S. on large volume rivers in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and
Arizona including most sections of the Yampa, Green, Salt, Lochsa, Middle
Fork of the Salmon, and Colorado rivers. I kayak locally about 10
trips/month, and do longer rafting/multiday trips two or three times per
year. If anyone has any need in samples from any of these locations I would
be happy to help.

2) Colorado- 7/1/13-8/14/13 Climbing, Cycling

My climbing/cycling partner and I are to spend eight weeks (~55 days)
traveling Colorado to explore the best climbing and to experience the
greatest climbing trip of our lives. We will not be traveling by car,
instead by bicycle, resulting in a 620 mile cycle tour through Colorado.
Cycling has many tangible benefits to this tour. With a total elevation
gain of nearly 40,000ft we are able to improve our body's fitness while
having a flexible means of getting from one destination to another. While
the primary focus of our trip will be aimed at climbing, we will spend
roughly 25% of our time cycling as a means of transportation to the next
area. We will have all of our gear for camping and climbing in tow. We made
this decision because we felt that the philosophy that has inspired free
climbers for decades should extend beyond the climb: to use only our
bodies, skill, and fitness to move forward. If possible we would like to
collect scientific data if anyone is looking for such.

interested in conducting data collection for scientists in lakes, rivers,
dams or other bodies of water in Texas.

[ECOLOG-L] Expedition to Cameroon willing to collect data Jan - June 2013 - RIver

2013-01-04 Thread Gregg Treinish
Dear Ecolog,

We have an expedition team that will be exploring the rivers of Cameroon by
kayak from Jan - June 2013. The expedition team has volunteered to collect
data for anyone who may need information from the area.

Please let me know if you have data collection needs (water collection,
poaching related, or anything that will be helpful) in the area and we can
get you partnered with the team.

Cameroon is one of the least explored countries on the whitewater paddling
map. A post-colonial, francophone country, Cameroon topographically holds
the potential of being an amazing whitewater paddling destination. For this
reason, a team of
professional paddlers are embarking on an expedition to explore the area.
Curiousity and the draw of adventure will lead them deep into the jungles
of Cameroon where they hope to share what they find with the rest of the
world.

You can view a map of some of the areas they plan to visit here:

www.adventureandscience.org/Camaroon-Expedition

Please note: In all cases once we have established a science project, we
will pursue proper permitting with the expedition and scientific team.

now and late April.

You can see some photos from initial scouting expeditions to the area taken
just last week.

20October%2020-22,%202012/**album/http://canyonchronicles.com/Hawaii/Mana%20Creek%20-%20October%2020-22,%202012/album/

This expedition is aimed at documenting and exploring the many creeks that
drain the eastern flank of Mauna Kea as well as Mount Kohala on the Island
of Hawaii. A majority of these creeks have cut deep canyons that have
extremely difficult access due to a number of logistical issues. Many of
the creeks have formed deep gorges with small pockets of habitat that have
been isolated from the surrounding environment, cut off by deep and narrow
canyon walls with significant elevation drops in the creeks. Many of these
'hanging habitats' have yet to been touched by the human hand and have
shown no signs of previous travel.

[ECOLOG-L] Expedition Biking from Mexico to Canada willing to collect data.

2012-03-21 Thread Gregg Treinish
We have an expedition that is going by bike from Mexico to Canada along the
west coast of the US. This team has volunteered to collect data as they
take part in this journey.

Because they will be largely on roads, one suggestion I would have would be
a roadkill survey of some sort. Is there anyone out there who is in need
of roadkill data?

Are there other studies that would benefit from these citizen-scientists?

www.adventurescience.org for more about our organization.

Thanks,
Gregg
