[ECOLOG-L] CHANGES TO ECOLOG-L AND YOUR ACCOUNT
Hello all, As you may have seen in previous messages, ECOLOG-L has been migrating to a server managed by the Ecological Society of America. That process is now complete, and a version of ECOLOG-L is now fully functional and searchable at http://community.esa.org. You can find the new ECOLOG-L group here: http://community.esa.org/group.htm?mode=home=35455 If you were an ECOLOG-L subscriber prior to January 1, 2019, you have an account set up on the ESA server already. To activate it, visit the ECOLOG-L home and follow the prompts to set up a new password for yourself. You will be able to send messages to the list via the web interface at http://community.esa.org/group.htm?mode=home=35455 or by emailing ecolog-l-annou...@community.esa.org. The server from which you are receiving this message, owned by the University of Maryland, will cease to host ECOLOG-L beginning on January 18, 2019. After that date, only the http://community.esa.org server for ECOLOG-L will continue to function. Subscribers who joined after January 1, 2019, and archives from that date forward are in the process of being uploaded to ESA. Some accounts and archives will not be active immediately on January 18. If you are a recent subscriber, you are encouraged to be patient. Should you need to re-join yourself to ECOLOG-L, you will be able to create an account at http://community.esa.org/group.htm?mode=home=35455, which is a public group within ESA's ECO community, Ecologists Collaborating Online. Please forward any questions to j...@esa.org.

[ECOLOG-L] Dear Colleague Letter: Request for Information - Integration Institutes for Cross-cutting Biology
December 6, 2018 Dear Colleagues: The National Science Foundation's Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) seeks ideas from the community on fundamental biological research questions and topics that are poised for major advances. Ideally these ideas would span multiple levels of organization in living systems and require expertise from diverse biological subdisciplines. This is a call, not for research proposals, but for high-level ideas. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2019. BACKGROUND Biology is unified by the goal of understanding the processes that sustain life and enable biological innovation across all levels of organization, from molecular to global scales. However, the field of biology has become increasingly fragmented into sub-disciplines over the past decades due, in part, to advances that enable deep study of narrowly defined problems. Emerging and mature technologies deliver high-resolution data at every scale, opening new avenues for cross-cutting discoveries in biology but also leading to additional levels of specialization. Creative integration of diverse sub-disciplines at this stage could significantly enhance our ability to tackle ambitious, fundamental biological questions — potentially re-unifying biology. To address this challenge, BIO envisions the creation of "Integration Institutes" to support collaborative teams of researchers at a level not feasible in most existing core programs and over a more extended timeframe than is typical of standard NSF awards. These Institutes will enable research and training in a truly integrated environment, preparing the next generation of biological scientists to pursue discipline-spanning research throughout their careers. BIO seeks suggestions about the types of questions and resources the community envisions would benefit from such NSF investment. There is no funding directly associated with this call; however, this input will be used to inform strategies for supporting a number of Integration Institutes over the next several years. WHO SHOULD RESPOND U.S.-based scientists should respond with ideas about biological challenges best suited for investigation across biological scales, as described above. HOW TO RESPOND In responding to this call, please consider the following questions: • What fundamental biological research question is poised for breakthroughs by collaboration across biological subdisciplines? Why is this question important? • Why is now a particularly good time to address this question? • What types of resources, in terms of expertise and infrastructure, would facilitate answers to this question? To respond, send a Word document of no more than 2 pages to bio-rfi...@nsf.gov, with the Subject line "RFI: Integration Institutes Response to DCL". On all submissions, include the author's name(s), organizational affiliation, and contact email. Proprietary information should not be included in the submissions. All submissions will be analyzed by a task force from all divisions of BIO to identify the most exciting and transformative ideas from the community. Inquiries may be directed to bio-rfi...@nsf.gov. Sincerely, Joanne Tornow, Ph.D. Assistant Director (Acting) Directorate for Biological Sciences

[ECOLOG-L] Advancing the Integration of Ecosystem Services and Livelihood Adaptation
Presented by Dr. Elizabeth G King Wednesday December 5, 1:00 pm EST The concept of ecosystem services has become a cornerstone in dialogues and policy making in conservation, natural resource management, and sustainable development. Most methods for ascribing values to the benefits provided by ecosystems are based on a conceptual "flow model" in which natural capital yields services, which in turn yield valued benefits to people. However, in sectors such as rural development and urban planning, there are increasingly vocal criticisms of outcomes that arise when decisions based on optimizing ecosystem services are put in to practice. In this talk, I will examine two limitations of mainstream conceptualizations of ecosystem service flows, and some methodological tools and cutting edge research from other disciplines that can help overcome those limitations. The first limitation is a failure to account for the range of capabilities that people need in order to co-create ecosystem services, and the second is a failure to formally consider how the benefits and values are distributed among members and segments of society. Principles from Sustainable Livelihood Analysis and the nascent field of adaptation studies can complement ecosystem service analyses and valuations to give more holistic and realistic understandings of ecosystem service flows and who benefits from them. To register for this free event, use the eventbrite link here, or email ussee2...@gmail.com. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advancing-the-integration-of-ecosystem-services-and-livelihood-adaptation-tickets-52418157119 SAVE THE DATE! [ECOLOG-L] Nominations Sought for Ornithology’s Katma Award
The American Ornithological Society is currently seeking nominations for their annual Katma Award, which recognizes publications that propose ideas or test theories that challenge current ornithological dogma and could change the course of thinking about the biology of birds. The award was originally established by the Cooper Ornithological Society in 2003 through the generous gift of Dr. Robert Storer, who proposed the name “Katma,” derived from the Greek work kat, which means “against.” The award consists of a $2500 prize and a certificate and is announced at the American Ornithological Society’s annual meeting (http://amornithmeeting.org/) “Why is katma needed?” wrote Dr. Storer. “Science moves forward by the production and acceptance of new ideas, yet it has been increasingly difficult to air new ideas in both the pure and applied sciences. Serious work that questions current dogma too often is stifled by those who are angered by seeing their own work questioned. Great katmatists like Galileo and Darwin are heroes of science.” Nominees for the award do not need to be members of the American Ornithological Society, nor do papers nominated need to have been published in an AOS journal. Full eligibility and nomination information is available on the AOS website at http://americanornithology.org/content/aos-katma-award. The deadline for the current nomination cycle is December 14. Please contact i...@americanornithology.org with any questions.

[ECOLOG-L] ECOLOG-L Is Transitioning This Week
Hello ECOLOG-L subscribers, Several weeks ago (listserv.umd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ECOLOG-L;ed0f5117.1810c), I wrote to let you know that ESA would be taking over administration of the listserv from the University of Maryland, and migrating the archives to our own system. The original target date for that transition's completion was slated for today, Nov. 12; it will actually be completed later this week. What You Need to Do You need to take no action regarding your subscription. If you are currently subscribed to ECOLOG-L, those settings will be retained during the migration. A notification message will be sent to the list after migration is complete; at that point, you will be able to log in at the new website to manage your settings. What Will Change ECOLOG-L will have a new home and web interface at http://community.esa.org. You will be able to manage your subscription (community.esa.org/p.htm?m=editsubscriptions) after the notification that your account has been activated. You are also invited to review the posted community rules. Posts by email to listserv.umd.edu addresses will bounce shortly after the transition is complete. Expect instead to see messages from ECOLOG-L arrive from community.esa.org addresses. If You Have Any Questions ESA anticipates a smooth transition, but understands that technology solutions are imperfect, especially when managed at large scales. Should you require any assistance with the list after receiving notification that the transition is complete and your account is active, contact j...@esa.org.

[ECOLOG-L] The Future of ECOLOG-L
Hello ECOLOG-L subscribers, You may have seen a few posts by me over the last several months, since I joined ESA as director of membership and communications in June. Most of what I've shared so far has been business of the Society that may have broader community interest. What I'm sharing now concerns all ECOLOG-L subscribers. Several months ago, ECOLOG-L founder Dr. David Inouye, a longstanding and distinguished member of ESA, requested that the Society take over administration of ECOLOG-L on a full-time basis. Since that time, we at ESA HQ have been working with Dr. Inouye and the technical team at the University of Maryland to sketch out a smooth transition plan. ESA is proud to be stepping in to support the ECOLOG-L community on its own platform, Ecologists Collaborating Online (ECO). It is our intention to ensure a seamless transition from the University of Maryland server to our own, and we look forward to providing this crucial service for the ecological community going forward. Currently, there are no actions that you will need to take: On approximately Nov. 12, 2018, the ECOLOG-L archives will be migrated to ECO, as will all user accounts, and ECOLOG-L itself will be shut down by the University of Maryland. We will be sharing more details about the transition, including what you can expect to see on ECO, over the next several weeks. If you have any specific questions, please contact j...@esa.org.

The National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education (AC ERE - https://www.nsf.gov/ere/ereweb/advisory.jsp) invites your input on possible environmental research and education directions to further advance national security and economic competitiveness. The purpose of the AC ERE is to: • Provide advice, recommendations and oversight concerning support for the NSF's environmental research and education portfolio; • Be a base of contact with the scientific community to inform NSF of the impact of its research support and NSF-wide policies on the scientific community; • Serve as a forum for consideration of interdisciplinary environmental topics as well as environmental activities in a wide range of disciplines; • Provide broad input into long-range plans and partnership opportunities; and • Provide advice about program management, overall program balance, and other aspects of program performance for environmental research and education activities. The Committee has been interested broadly in fundamental environmental research and education that also has societal utility. It has recently focused its attention on two major topics where there is broad consensus on the importance of the research to date, but where significant research questions remain. These topics are at the nexus of environmental science and engineering with economic growth and competitiveness, and the relationship of environmental factors to national and human security. The Committee is particularly interested in approaches that promote convergent research across disciplines and sectors to address economic competitiveness and economic security. To identify emerging research questions in these areas, the committee is reaching out to interested and knowledgeable members of the scientific community in all disciplines and interdisciplinary areas for their views. The AC ERE is also interested in the views of professionals who are directly involved in decision-making or operational activities in these areas, and who therefore can provide a very practical perspective on high-priority research and education topics. The AC ERE invites individuals and groups of individuals to provide input on one or both of the topics described above via this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACERE-RFI-2018 The online submission form requires the following information: 1. Author name(s) and affiliation(s); 2. Valid contact email address; 3. Title of the response; 4. An abstract (200 words or less) summarizing the response; and 5. Checkbox to consent to allow the AC ERE to display the submitted information, consistent with the Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode). You will also be asked to identify whether your response focuses on questions in environmental research and education that are pertinent to a) economic growth and competitiveness, b) national and human security, or c) both topics. The submission form includes the following question prompts. Respondents may respond to all or any subset of these questions. • What are the major environmental research priorities with the greatest potential to contribute to economic growth and competitiveness and/or national or human security/wellbeing? Priorities could, for example, include empirical, theoretical, or qualitative analyses, establishing baselines, and/or experimental studies. (500 words or less) • What methodologies should be used for conducting such studies? Methodological recommendations could include the prospects for interdisciplinary and/or convergent research approaches, including modeling, theory, empirical, qualitative, and/or experimental studies. Methodological recommendations could also discuss the scope of studies, e.g. the balance between single-investigator studies and large teams. (500 words or less) • What education (including formal and informal), research, and training opportunities - for students, postdoctoral researchers, and mid-career scientists - are needed? Opportunities might include interdisciplinary, team-based, or other innovative, value-added strategies for realizing higher levels of depth and breadth at the individual level, and/or expansion of the current environmental research community through inclusion of currently under-represented groups. (500 words or less) • Beyond economic competitiveness and national security, what other high priority drivers of environmental science and education need attention? (200 words or less) Submissions must be received by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on August 20, 2018. Respondents may edit their responses while completing the survey, but will not be able to save work in progress to complete later. Respondents will see a confirmation screen upon successful submission responses. The committee and associated staff will

According to its bylaws, the STEAC is “primarily an advisory body to the NEON Project and will provide strategic advice to Battelle, the NEON Principal Investigator (PI), and NEON Project staff on the planning, construction, and operation of the NEON Project and other relevant programs.” This is a particularly exciting time to be engaged with NEON as construction nears completion and the Observatory transitions into full operations. The STEAC is comprised of 15-20 members who serve three-year terms and are expected to attend two in-person meetings at NEON headquarters in Boulder, CO each year and participate in monthly conference calls with the Chief Scientist/Observatory Director and other NEON staff as needed. There are currently up to five vacancies available on the STEAC. STEAC members will be selected from the nominations received according to criteria that insure diversity and inclusion in representation, including variety in gender, career stage, race and ethnicity, institution type, geography (e.g., NEON Domain representation), area of expertise, and life experience. Particular attention will be given to nominees that are already using NEON data or planning to use NEON data, and areas of expertise currently needed on the committee including vertebrates, insects (ticks or mosquitoes), soil science, large scale (continental) ecology, modeling impacts of climate change on ecosystems, LiDAR and other remote sensing like MODIS or Landsat/Sentinel 2 Phenology, broadening participation in STEM fields, and experience with networks and large facilities, e.g., MREFC, LTER, CZO, GLEON or other international observation networks. To nominate a colleague (self-nominations are also welcome), please complete this form at https://www.neonscience.org/steac-nomination-form, which asks for the nominee’s name, website address, and a few sentences describing what the nominee would contribute to the STEAC, along with their fit relative to the criteria listed above. Nominations will be accepted through Aug 15, 2018.

[ECOLOG-L] XXV IUFRO World Congress Call for Session Proposals
Deadline for proposals: 1 August 2018 The Congress Scientific Committee invites submission of session proposals for the 2019 IUFRO World Congress. In keeping with the spirit of the Congress title – Forest Research and Cooperation for Sustainable Development the Congress Scientific Committee is developing a program that will highlight the contributions that forest science is making to address the significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing our world. The Congress program will reflect the forest science community’s diverse contributions across the full range of natural and social science disciplines, with special emphasis on key issues and research areas identified in IUFRO’s 20152019 Strategy (https://www.iufro.org/discover/strategy/) . Who may submit a session proposal? All who share an interest in the future of forests and forest science are invited to submit session proposals. We encourage proposals that involve collaboration between two or more IUFRO Divisions or Task Forces and/or with organizations not formally associated with IUFRO, and from university students at all levels. We strongly recommend IUFRO officeholders and others actively involved in IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties, and Task Forces communicate with their respective Division representatives on the CSC (or Task Force coordinators) before submitting proposals – this will greatly facilitate broader involvement of IUFRO divisional units and Task Forces in the scientific program and avoid overlaps among sessions. Session proposals from nonIUFRO member organizations are encouraged although preference will be given to those that are prepared jointly with IUFRO Divisional Units and Task Forces (see https://www.iufro.org/science/ for more information) – if assistance is needed to identify appropriate partners within IUFRO, please contact any member of the CSC. Preparing and submitting a session proposal. Proposals should be submitted in English, Portuguese or Spanish, online at www.iufro2019.com using the Session Proposal Form. Proposals will not be accepted after 1 August 2018. In addition to providing basic information on session organizer(s), session title, alignment with Congress themes, and a short abstract of the session proposal, those submitting proposals should submit (online) a more complete proposal (following the template provided). The template will prompt proposers about session objectives and content in relation to Congress theme(s), proposed session format (i.e., presentation of individual papers and/or posters, moderated panel discussion, or other forms of presentation) and names of proposed speakers (if known), their organizational affiliations and indicative titles of their presentations. Proposed sessions should be organized to be nominally 2 hours in length. For sessions involving oral presentations, we recommend that 15 minutes be adopted for standard oral presentations. However, we encourage proponents to be innovative, and to consider panel discussions, interactive poster sessions and other ways to engage Congress participants. Please note that the abstract submission process (later this year) will be open to all, so session organizers may need to include papers or posters that were not originally proposed for their sessions. Please be aware of this possibility and the need for flexibility in designing your session . In the event that the number of accepted abstracts for a particular session exceeds the number that can be accommodated in a single session, organizers may be given an additional session slot in the Congress program. Criteria for selection. Session proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Congress Scientific Committee with primary consideration given to their scientific quality and relevance to the Congress themes. Other factors that will be considered are: the involvement of two or more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces, Research Groups and Working Parties) and/or nonIUFRO organizations; geographic and gender diversity of proposed session presenters; and the involvement of students and young scientists. We strongly encourage submissions well in advance of the August 1 deadline. Acceptance decisions will be made no later than 31 August 2018. An open Call for Abstracts will be issued in September, with online abstract submission until 15 December 2018, and acceptance decisions provided by 28 February 2019. Responsibilities of session organizers. Session organizers of accepted proposals are expected to communicate with prospective presenters regarding submission of abstracts (online, from mid-September to midDecember 2018), and will be asked to review abstracts submitted for their sessions during the abstract review period (i.e., in midDecember 2018 to end February 2019). Session organizers may be asked to assist the CSC in the editing of accepted abstracts. They will also
