Not sure if this is any help, but maybe also try Retroshare
  https://retroshare.cc/

I have wanted to use Ekiga for years, even way back when it was some other
name I can't remember at the moment. Unfortunately I have few friends who care
about computer use or anything they use on them (they're all the kind who
could care less, just so it works, and of course they're all M$ users too), so
I never was able to install and use Ekiga, though I sure wish I could.
Presently, if there's any cost whatsoever involved, I'm unable to use it as
I've fallen on hard times and barely able to keep a roof over my head much
less spend a few dollars on something for software use.

Hopefully though that Retroshare thing may help. Let us know if you do at
least try it...though I suppose it'd be a bit rude here on the Ekiga list (my
  apologies to the Ekiga owners/makers!).

Hi Peter,

server side you have the GNU Gatekeeper (https://www.gnugk.org) that
uses H.323 and is still under active development.

Unfortunately nonw of the available OpenSource endpoints is really
production quality. See my list at
https://www.gnugk.org/h323-endpoint.html

I think you best bet are the free (but not open) mobile H.323
endpoints, like RealPresence or Yealink VC (also on my list).

Hi,

Ekiga is not ready for H323, unfortunately. I tried it once with an
H323 equipment in France and it did not work. There are still bugs
which make it unusable.

French researchers have access to a very easy to use videoconferencing
system, https://rendez-vous.renater.fr. You have access when they
invite you for a given videoconference. You just need a browser, no
need of plugins. I regularly use it and it works pretty well.

checking whether the Boost::Signals library is available... yes
configure: error: Could not find a version of the library!

That is an OS question. But on both Linux and Windows, you should have
your own login, and other logins are not (supposed to be) able to see or
change your settings of any application - unless they are an
"administrator" (have root or sudo privilege on Linux). The admin/root
user will of course be normally allowed to see and change your settings.

Hi,

I put at http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/m.exe the latest ekiga (post 4.0.1)
with a modification done between 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 removed. This is the

Test it and tell if it gives the same results as 4.0.0 or not.

4.0.0 worked better than 4.0.1. 01 couldn't even register to Ekiga.net
and not even an echo test worked. But 00 never worked fully either -
echo and call back tests worked (with video present) but calls to
another person (only one person was called and calls were recieved from
him multiple times within 30 minutes) only worked without video (ie:
voice only). Only once, for a brief instant I saw an image of the other
person at the very beginning of the call. After that the image
disappeared and the call continued in voice only. The results of that
test were described in February's thread: Ekiga test today.

Do you always or most often receive the dialogue box about Ekiga did

With 4.0.0, has it worked with several outgoing and incoming calls, or
you have tested only once (calling once 5...@ekiga.net for ex.)?

After I first installed 4.0.0, both echo and call back tests always
worked with video (repeated MANY times). After I installed 4.0.1 over
4.0.0, nothing worked even once. Then two things were done: I installed
Skype and installed 4.0.0 over 4.0.1 (don't remember which was done
first). The roll back was done as per your request to run the -d 4 log
on 4.0.0. But after the rollback, 4.0.0 didn't work as before. The echo
test now always works with audio only (never with video) and the call
back test now never works: Ekiga hangs as soon as I pick up after the
system calls me back and this happens every time.

Please do several tests, call and receive calls, and only afterwards
answer this e-mail.

I ask this because I am told that BOTH releases do not work for you in
fact. As soon as the dialogue box appear (if it appears occasionally,
say 10% of the time, then this is not a problem), the port forwarding
does not function properly. In this case we try to PREVENT you from
registering, since even if you do register, you will certainly have
communication problems (non audio/video most of the time when calling
or when called).

I understand that it is annoying, but adding a checkbox means adding it
to configuration files too, allow users to uncheck it, take into account
users who forgot this, or worse users who change network (work-home)
and where parameters are different etc.

So we need to think a bit about that before implementing anything.

Check whether you can be called too. See

2. To confirm that I am getting out there and to see how things work, I
wanted to call someone but every person I tried in the address book was
unavailable. Would someone be so kind as to make themselves available
for a short chat (I can make myself available during most of the day and
am in GMT - 8 )?

3. Audio: During the tests there was a lot of echo even after I enabled
echo cancellation in preferences. What can I do to improve the sound?

Echo cancellation is not high quality. Buy a headset.

4. Video: Is there a way to make the video conference window occupy the
whole screen (my monitor is set to 1024x768)?

Use fullscreen in View menu during conversation.

Yes for both; alternatively, I have seen USB microphone+speaker which
do, they say, echo cancellation, probably in hardware, but this
needs to be tested. No VoIP free software has professional echo
cancellation support.

Regarding Video Quality:
My camera supports res up to 720p, Ekiga is suppose to support up to
480p but the picture I observed on my screen was rather poor. Besides
lighting, is there anything I can do to improve the picture?

Use maximum available resolution in ekiga. Try also the video control
small window in ekiga (lighting, contrast etc.), once the call window
is shown.

Check whether you can be called too. See
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Understanding_NAT/firewall_issues_with_SIP_clients_%28eg_ekiga%29

for some information.

2. To confirm that I am getting out there and to see how things
work, I
wanted to call someone but every person I tried in the address book
was

unavailable. Would someone be so kind as to make themselves available
for a short chat (I can make myself available during most of the

3. Audio: During the tests there was a lot of echo even after I
enabled

echo cancellation in preferences. What can I do to improve the sound?

Echo cancellation is not high quality. Buy a headset.

4. Video: Is there a way to make the video conference window occupy
the

whole screen (my monitor is set to 1024x768)?

Use fullscreen in View menu during conversation.

Re: open port error message

Just installed 4.0.1 (over 4.0.0 on WinXP). The old port message is
still there (no big surprise) but now I get another problem: In the
system tray I get a yellow triangle exclamation warning saying: Could
not register to Ekiga.net. Now even the echo test doesn't work, I get
a message: Security check failed. So now Ekiga really doesn't work
for me...

As far aas I can say, it is not easy to find out if it will work or not,
so that text message will remain there. We have to think about all that.

Re #3: Is echo problem common place with Ekiga and is a head set the

Yes for both; alternatively, I have seen USB microphone+speaker which
do, they say, echo cancellation, probably in hardware, but this needs
to be tested. No VoIP free software has professional echo cancellation
support.

Regarding Video Quality:
My camera supports res up to 720p, Ekiga is suppose to support up to
480p but the picture I observed on my screen was rather poor. Besides
lighting, is there anything I can do to improve the picture?

Use maximum available resolution in ekiga. Try also the video control
small window in ekiga (lighting, contrast etc.), once the call window is
shown.

It looks like a strange problem. You mention above that you did not

Is there a typo there? Why do you mention this service?

I did a search on ekiga.net (from Addressbook) for an account of yours

If you get a 'You credit is low' message when calling 5...@ekiga.net,

I have Voipcheap (registered), and Ekiga.net SIP service (Could not

I hadn't noticed the Could not register, internal server error, that
sounds like a clue. Is the error at Ekiga.net?

Re: [Ekiga-list] Newbie, help: Account mgmt problems

2009-01-31 Thread Alec Leamas
I've isolated the problem. In a fresh install, right after the
configuration wizard, clear the Authentication User field for the
Ekiga account. After this an exit + restart corrupts the Ekiga account data.

Trying to sort things out, I ran ekiga under valgrind. There is a lot
of Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s); I
presume these are irrelevant. Besides these, Ekiga runs clean when the
Authentication User field is non-empty.

However, the following two errors occurs iff the Authentication User
field is empty i. e., when the data corruption occurs.

in at the

- Invoking the Account | Edit Account dialog with correct, unchanged data
effectively toggles the account between Registered and Unregistered.

- With data OK, successfully logged in to mysecretary.net and making
a Chat | Quit the server does not understand that the client is
disconnected (still

presented as present/logged in by server). Possibly a server issue?

- The server eventually understands that the client has disconnected
after the

 timeout specified fot the account.

I have a feeling that there are at least two things here: data
corruption and presence mgmt. But, I'm a newbie and should thus not have
any feelings ;-)

So, I don't have any blocking errors for the time being. But the

First of all: I actually got Ekiga 3.0.1 running to the point of a
working call to the echo service on my Fedora 10 box which is a Good
Thing. You are doing a great job!

However, being a newbie I found it a little harder than it ought to be.
If it's an objective that Ekiga should be easy to setup, here are some
remarks:

Sound device selection.

- There is no support for testing the output devices
(Play test sound) for output nor ringing device in
the device selection menu. I think it should.

- On my Fedora box, some selections makes Ekiga really weird
  e. g., it's possible to connect but not to disconnect.
The bad thing is that there is no user feedback indicating
that this is a problem with the sound devices, which makes
it hard to figure out what's going on.

NAT traversal and router setup:

- My router is a NAT router with the dreaded Symmetric NAT.
There *is* an error message when Ekiga is started which
basically says that I have to configure the router manually.
The crucial term Symmetric NAT is *not* mentioned in this
message. I finally learned to start ekiga with debug output,
and grep for 'stun' to reveal this fact. This should really
easier, the information about Symmetric NAT should be
  displayed to the user.

- Once I understood that my router was doing Symmetric NAT I
configured port forwarding according to the docs (dynamic,
triggered ports is not properly handled by my Thomson
router). I came to a point with working connect/disconnect
  but no sound.

- After some more reading, I understood that the stunnel
stuff was in the way. So I needed to disable stunnel. There
are no switches in the UI for this, and even in gconf
there is no Use stunnel option. What I did was to set
the stunnel host to a non-existing value. This created a
lot of error messages, and a working Ekiga... This should
be easier and more straightforward IMHO.

The issue to setup Ekiga with a router doing symmetric NAT couldn't
really be out of the box, I understand that. But I still think this
process could be easier with better error messages and configuration
options. Or, maybe, a Symmetric NAT wizard?

Last but not least, I shouldn't have taken the time to write this unless
I really appreciate what you are doing...

I second that.

One thing you may find, if you are using a Thomson ST 585 V6 router as I am, is
that once you have disabled STUN then the ST 585 appears to automatically
open the RTP ports for you. ie you don't need to manually set the router
to port forward them, at least on my setup ...
It seems to also forward them to the correct host (I have a number of systems
behind the ST586).

The behavior is normal. It is actually a perfect router.

NAT is something bad, as it rewrites the packets. The problem with NAT
is that some protocols (like SIP) require you to change the private IP
address inside the SIP packet. A good NAT implementation should be able
to do it for most common protocols. Most NAT implementations can deal
with FTP transparently for you. Unfortunately, until recently, that was
not the case with SIP and you needed workarounds like STUN or port
forwarding.

But recently, more and more routers started to have a NAT implementation
that supports SIP. In that case, no port forwarding, no STUN are
required.

That is the perfect situation. Please note that it only forwards RTP
ports because it knows that is a connection you established yourself. It
is able to understand what happens.

of surprised from the error message that ekiga gave that it didn't seem
to be able to distinguish between errors caused by ports already being
taken on my local machine so that it couldn't bind to them, and errors
caused by needing to forward ports on a separate router!

The error message means that another application is already using the
port Ekiga is trying to open (probably UDP 5060 for SIP or TCP 1720 for
H.323 or both).

Another possibility would be that you have no network interface ready

When I start ekiga, it tells me I won't be able to receive incoming
calls. However, it just says 'Error while starting the listener ...' and
'check no other program is running on the port used ...' without saying
anything about what the error was or what port it's talking about! Not

 such ports:

 Have you tried:

Good idea. It is using the correct interface.

I have it set to use STUN with stun.ekiga.net - might that not suffice?
The NAT test thing said Port Restricted NAT.

Mind you, I'm about to change ISP, and I could compile SIP and H.323
support into my NAT box - might that fix the error I saw? I'm just kind
of surprised from the error message that ekiga gave that it didn't seem
to be able to distinguish between errors caused by ports already being
taken on my local machine so that it couldn't bind to them, and errors
caused by needing to forward ports on a separate router!

(And, of course, it still doesn't see my camera, although previous
versions of things did, and mplayer still does. ): )

 3. You can get more information by running ekiga from the command line with

Aha, that might tell me what I've been complaining about missing,
thanks. (-:

No. Read the wiki.

The NAT test thing said Port Restricted NAT.

Possibly the problem...

If you are implementing your own NAT then it should be easy to fix.

The NAT test thing said Port Restricted NAT.

That should be fine. The other possible culprit then is that you have a
previous instance of ekiga running which hasn't been killed properly. Looking
at your original email again I see that I missed this line:

When I quit ekiga, the window closes but it just hangs and doesn't
 terminate.

So, it's quite possible that you have a previous instance of ekiga hanging
around. You can check for sure with

netstat -p -l | grep ekiga

and follow it up with a killall ekiga or just kill the PID mentioned in the
PID/ekiga column output from the above.

Hope that helps, I'm out of easy ideas after that.

Yes, good argument, if we have time, we write sub-pages to explain
them or make links to external sites (Wikipedia?), mostly that are
 codec
names and protocol names, from what I can see now.

Thru. IMHO, first we should spilt protocols and codecs in the table (by
adding a colomn protocols), then document both of them (Jan, wikipedia
seems good idea for that as hyperlinks won't bloat the table !).

Thank you for the feedback. I'll change that soon when i'll have more
spar time.

You need a SIP client on the other side, no matter which operating
system. Soon you can use Ekiga/WIN32. Check:

Interesting site. It looks like Windows Messenger (I assume it's MSN Messenger)
can work with Ekiga but I don't understand what the various accronyms stand for
