I just set the 4 "quick memories" for each band to 10 KHz up from the bottom of
the CW portion, middle of the CW portion, middle of the RTTY portion and middle
of the SSB portion of the band. Couple of quick button presses and a short
crank of the main tuning either way and you're there.

Barry,
On the menu set it at 2.5 (the fastest) and it flies up the band with a couple
quick turns
Give it a try.
I also tune the bands, but if I am on CW and want to go up to the SSB end of
the band I dont have to spin
the VFO A knob until the cows come home, hihi.

Many thanks Don, W3FPR and Rick, K6LE for the info on tuning rate with the RIT.
I would have gotten carpal tunnel syndrome from spinning the vfo A knob to make
big excursions. hihi
much appreciated !

Thanks Rick! That's the fast tune knob I missed from the TS-850.

Don,
I'm aware of that and have it turned on. However, the small knob still
doesn't change the rate fast enough for my tastes and you can't really spin
it fast because the knob doesn't have enough mass and is too close to the
VFO B tuning knob.
You guys who don't like this feature - don't use it
Guys,
Read the K3 manual (especially the menu entries)- it is already
"included" in the package.
Set the menu VFO CRS to whatever you desire (note that it is per mode).
Then set VFO OFS to ON and you can use the RIT knob to tune in the VFO

If ON , the RIT/XIT offset control can be used to tune VFO A in large steps
when both RIT and XIT are turned off. The step sizes vary with mode (see VFO

Kenwood 850 had a good solution - a second, small fast tune knob that could
selectively tune 1 or 10 kHz. Not possible for the K3 but can maybe be on a
'K4' wish list.
It's the only 850 feature that I really miss.

Builders of the STAR rave about the tuning scheme Peter Rhodes has in
it. I built MY version of STAR with my own software and couldn't get my
variable rate stuff to work very well. KK7P is familiar with it, and no
doubt he can do better than I did.
In any case, like everything else under the sun

I guess I'm the odd man out on this preference. I used an ICOM 735 for 20

I have to agree with the need for the radio to be smarter about changing it's
tuning rate automatically. This is a software change that would be helpful to
most of us and is great on the Icoms.

If you are willing to do a bit of hardware work, installing a different
tuning encoder will either double or quadruple the tuning rates. I have
the 400 step/rev encoders in my radios and find them quite acceptable.
The encoders used to be available at Mouser, but the last one I bought I

I find the slow rate to be a bit too slow. The medium (5 KHz) speed
rate is about right but the step size is too big yielding audible pitch
steps. The fast rate for me is too fast. I'd be quite happy with the
medium speed if those steps could be shrunk :-)

Hi Gang...one of my wants for my K2 (and there's not much) is a
different tuning rate. I use the 10/50/1000 Hz setting which is 1 KHz,
5 KHz and 100 KHz per knob revolution. I'm usually in the 5 KHz mode
and find that's too slow and don't like to be switching rates too
often. I'd like to cov
