Dave,
I don't agree with your conclusion at all. It just takes practice. If
you're having trouble crank the filter width of the DSP to a narrow
setting and tune until the signal peaks. That will be close enough.

If it is such a chore to zero beat a CW station, how did we ever do it when
we did not have all these aids. I do in fact ponder a bit in zeroing an SSB

I now have version 1.96/1/73 and still having this problem. I have just
finished building the XG1 test oscillator and have checked the S-meter

1.78/1.58 and the 1.96/173 firmware versions. So the calibration doesn't

No problems here.
Just an off the wall thought, is the DC supply to your K3 OK ?
I had a similar symptoms with a loose PSU connection.

No problems here with Beta 1.94, seems to work great, including Autospot.
This just keeps on getting better!
Hope I didn't speak too soon...
Thanks

Guys,
There is another way to solve the CW spot problem.
It's called get on the air and work CW. You will quickly develop the skill
of zero beating by ear.
You will find that most CW ops don't use any zero beating gizmo. Much
faster and easier to do it by ear.
Another thing. Narrow filter
On many TCVRs - if you are not in QSK mode - you can just press key
and hear pitch tone (sidetone) and tune signal to zero beat.
This is one reason I was opening KEY OUT port settings wish - to have
sidetone only without keying to TX by pressing key (in nonQSK), but it
is another story ;-)

When tuning by ear using a wide bandwidth filter, I have found that it
is easier if you go from the low tone side to high instead of high to
low. I think the higher octave(s) can sometimes confuse you when you
go from high to low.
Yes, it is pretty easy to get within 10 or 20 hz by ear. For most
Frank,
Try re-loading 1.94 also load the FPF and DSP at the same time. There
may have been a glitch in your front panel firmware load, or you may not
have checked the FPF load checkbox.

Greetings all,
After upgrading to f/w v1.94 and reading several comments on the list about
auto-zerobeat, I've deliberately used the feature on several CW nets with
all kinds of signals. My overall impression is that it works just fine, but
it seems as if the time it uses to zerobeat has
This type of response is why I think the K3 represents a low-risk investment.
Hurry up UPS! (Mine is on the way).

I'll restore it to its former glory, don't worry. But not until I get
back from Dayton.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but after a F/W upgrade, I

Otherwise, some anomalies exist, including elevated headphone hiss and

Well, I have, and found that the lower the threshold, the less stable.

Something has happened to the S-meter in this release. All of a sudden I have
signals that are 60dB over S9. I am sure there is no more than 6-10dB
