Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem

2021-12-07 Thread Michael Carter
Tom,

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but hey,
it's only a virtual limb!

I am going to withdraw my previous statement
that the K3 SWR bridge is operating correctly.
Given what you've said, the ATU control algorithm
is receiving bad information from the SWR bridge.

Here's how to test this hypothesis:

-- use a different resistive load than 50 ohms, e.g. two
50 ohm loads in parallel using a tee-junction,
or build a higher resistance load using
several non-inductive power resistors, or
use a 4:1 balun reversed to present a 200 ohm
load to the ATU when balun terminated in 50 ohms.

-- put the KAT3 ATU in 'bypass' mode

-- measure SWR at low TX power (whatever
power the ATU uses automatically is fine
as long as your loads can tolerate the dissipation
briefly).

Schottky diodes D36 and D37 in the K3
SWR bridge detector circuit are known
to be sensitive to high voltage transients,
e.g. ESD or lightning-induced voltages.
Failure of either or both diodes produces
bad SWR estimates, which may not
be observed when using a good 50 ohm
termination.

If you have a good high impedance DC
voltmeter (DMM), you might check
the voltages VFWD and VREFL at the
outputs of the LM358 op amp unity
gain buffers (U16 on the K3 RF board)
to observe how each behaves with
different load resistances at the ANT
port(s). If the VREFL voltage doesn't
change predictably with mismatched
loads, it could be that diode D37 has
failed.

A search of the old Elecraft reflector
and the separate K3 groups.io forum
reveals lots of discussion about anomalous
behavior of the ATU, frequently associated
with SWR bridge component failure.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem

2021-12-07 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I
The KAT3, KAT500, KPA1500 tuners, all have the same feature.  I have all
three.

If you want a finer (lower SWR) value, within a few seconds of the first
tuning cycle stopping, start the sequence a second time and the tuner
will cycle through ALL possible settings to attempt a lower match.  It
may/not make a difference.

I would also, at this point, seek out an antenna analyzer to see what
data could be gleaned from that; perhaps a cable, connector or other
antenna system element (anything beyond the tuner, even IN the radio) is
no longer valid.  Tuning into a KNOWN 50 ohm dummy load may show
something interesting as well.

Again, setting CONFIG | TUN to 10 (watts), should help resolve your
issue, 5 watts is a touch low.  If it does not, you may have a failed
component (or relay) in the tuner.

If you can, try to eliminate the possibilities (antenna, feed,
connectors) to find out what failed/changed; narrow the search.  (Does
another radio tune the antenna easily, EVERY time?)

Dave and Rick indicated that running the K3 at a higher power level during
the ATU Tune sequence might solve the problem however, as far as I can see,
the power level is fixed at 5 watts during auto tune and cannot be altered.

Mike, there is no problem with the Ant 1 and Ant 2 ports and manual
selection of L & C works OK. The ATU just won't end up with the right
settings for lowest SWR. The problem has not always existed.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and N1MM+

2021-12-07 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ted,

You should be using the special cable from the PC (or USB to Serial
adapter).
That cable has no RTS or DTR wires in it, so it will not work for
sending CW from N1MM.  In other words, DTR and RTS are not implemented
in the K2.

Do NOT try to "fix" it by plugging the USB to serial adapter directly
into the K2 - if it does not damage the K2, it will cause "strange
happenings" in the K2 operation.

Either a 'one transistor' keying interface, or a K1EL Winkeyer will have
to be used between the USB to serial adapter and the K2 key jack to make
N1MM send CW in the K2.

Remember that the DB9 connector on a K2 is NOT a standard RS232
connector. Study the manual. To send CW via the computer serial port, a
"level shifter" is needed. It's been a while, but I think I remember DTR
driving a generic PNP with 5K in series with the base, and the collector
to the K2 key input, emitter to keying return. Someone will correct me

Ted -

Ultimately, N1MM+ needs to talk to a keying circuit which will then drive
the KEY IN jack
on the K2. I've had very good results, for example, with K1EL's
WKUSB-SMT. I got that when
I no longer had a PC with serial or parallel ports on it. In an earlier
incarnation, I had N1MM
drive a one-transistor keying circuit that was, if memory serves (it was a
while ago), connected
to a serial port on my PC ... and defined as such in N1MM.

Good luck -

Looks like the wall wart cannot provide the 2.5 A needed for transmit. The drop

If you want a small supply, the KX-33 can provide 4 A at 14 V.

[Elecraft] KX3 - Holding Power Output at Set Value\

2021-12-07 Thread David Hourdequin
I am in the process of getting familiar with my newly acquired KX3 purchased
for POTA and am enjoying it immensely.

I am powering it with a 14.8V, high quality, Yamaha walwart - very little
internal noise. Settings indicated in the VFO B display area using DISP are
normal.

When I set the PWR level to 10 watts and then key the xmtr, the power
immediately drops to 5 watts. With the key down, I am monitoring the VFO B
display which indicates a drop from 14.8V to 10+V and 1+A. That makes it 10W.
If so, why does the reading when I push in PWR drop to 5W? Is that ‘input’
power vs ‘output’ power, ie, 50% efficiency?

If that is true, how does one achieve and maintain 10W of output power?

Any help would be most appreciated. Feel free to RSVP here or call if you like
- or send me your number and I’ll call you!

Tnx es 73, David, NS4V

[Elecraft] K2 and N1MM+

2021-12-07 Thread edauer
I need advice for getting N1MM+ to play well with a K2. I have tried it
with two different K2 rigs: a K2 with a KIO2, and a different K2-100 with
the built in IO. Same problem. The K2 Port parameter is set to ON and N1MM
tracks the RX frequency, so I know the rig and the computer are
communicating. But a keyboard command from N1MM to the rig returns the
error message -- "Unable to send this CW because there is no CW Port set in
Config."

But the CW box in the N1MM configuration screen IS checked, and "set," and
config is: 4800 N 8 1 DTR and RTS Always On (and every other possible
combination thereof); Radio on Nr 1, and PTT via radio command mode CW. I
have also tried every possible permutation of KIO2 and KUSB cables, on both
rigs, in case of a badness there. No change. Same problem every time.

I know that when using my K3 with N1MM it's necessary to have the K3's menu
settings for DTR and RTS set properly to CW to match the settings in N1MM .
. . but I have found no such option in the K2 menus. I have also read that
it can be done using a W1EL keyer, but having outboard dongles sort of
defeats my purpose.

Can it be done with just the K2/KIO2, a KUSB cable, and an ordinary
computer?

Thanks, anyone.

Ted, KN1CBR

Mike, there is no problem with the Ant 1 and Ant 2 ports and manual
selection of L & C works OK. The ATU just won't end up with the right
settings for lowest SWR. The problem has not always existed.

[Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem

2021-12-07 Thread Tom Boucher
Thanks NK7Z, NK7I and K8CN for responses.

73,
Tom G3OLB
