Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem
Tom, I'm going to go out on a limb here, but hey, it's only a virtual limb! I am going to withdraw my previous statement that the K3 SWR bridge is operating correctly. Given what you've said, the ATU control algorithm is receiving bad information from the SWR bridge. Here's how to test this hypothesis: -- use a different resistive load than 50 ohms, e.g. two 50 ohm loads in parallel using a tee-junction, or build a higher resistance load using several non-inductive power resistors, or use a 4:1 balun reversed to present a 200 ohm load to the ATU when balun terminated in 50 ohms. -- put the KAT3 ATU in 'bypass' mode -- measure SWR at low TX power (whatever power the ATU uses automatically is fine as long as your loads can tolerate the dissipation briefly). Schottky diodes D36 and D37 in the K3 SWR bridge detector circuit are known to be sensitive to high voltage transients, e.g. ESD or lightning-induced voltages. Failure of either or both diodes produces bad SWR estimates, which may not be observed when using a good 50 ohm termination. If you have a good high impedance DC voltmeter (DMM), you might check the voltages VFWD and VREFL at the outputs of the LM358 op amp unity gain buffers (U16 on the K3 RF board) to observe how each behaves with different load resistances at the ANT port(s). If the VREFL voltage doesn't change predictably with mismatched loads, it could be that diode D37 has failed. A search of the old Elecraft reflector and the separate K3 groups.io forum reveals lots of discussion about anomalous behavior of the ATU, frequently associated with SWR bridge component failure. 73, Mike, K8CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem
The KAT3, KAT500, KPA1500 tuners, all have the same feature. I have all three. If you want a finer (lower SWR) value, within a few seconds of the first tuning cycle stopping, start the sequence a second time and the tuner will cycle through ALL possible settings to attempt a lower match. It may/not make a difference. I would also, at this point, seek out an antenna analyzer to see what data could be gleaned from that; perhaps a cable, connector or other antenna system element (anything beyond the tuner, even IN the radio) is no longer valid. Tuning into a KNOWN 50 ohm dummy load may show something interesting as well. Again, setting CONFIG | TUN to 10 (watts), should help resolve your issue, 5 watts is a touch low. If it does not, you may have a failed component (or relay) in the tuner. If you can, try to eliminate the possibilities (antenna, feed, connectors) to find out what failed/changed; narrow the search. (Does another radio tune the antenna easily, EVERY time?) 73, Rick NK7I On 12/7/2021 3:13 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: The KAT500 will enter a fine-tune mode if you re-initiate a tune cycle right after the first one has finished. I don't know if the KAT3 will do that, and I can't test it because mine always finds the primary match the first time, but Elecraft would have a lot of incentive to reuse KAT3 algorithms and code in the KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and N1MM+
Ted, You should be using the special cable from the PC (or USB to Serial adapter). That cable has no RTS or DTR wires in it, so it will not work for sending CW from N1MM. In other words, DTR and RTS are not implemented in the K2. Do NOT try to "fix" it by plugging the USB to serial adapter directly into the K2 - if it does not damage the K2, it will cause "strange happenings" in the K2 operation. Either a 'one transistor' keying interface, or a K1EL Winkeyer will have to be used between the USB to serial adapter and the K2 key jack to make N1MM send CW in the K2. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/7/2021 4:13 PM, eda...@aya.yale.edu wrote: I need advice for getting N1MM+ to play well with a K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and N1MM+
Ted - Ultimately, N1MM+ needs to talk to a keying circuit which will then drive the KEY IN jack on the K2. I've had very good results, for example, with K1EL's WKUSB-SMT. I got that when I no longer had a PC with serial or parallel ports on it. In an earlier incarnation, I had N1MM drive a one-transistor keying circuit that was, if memory serves (it was a while ago), connected to a serial port on my PC ... and defined as such in N1MM.
