The problem with ROHS compliant soldering is that you must not be able to mix
it up with leaded solder. So, a manufacturer has to have one or the other, or
separate lines running one each exclusively. So, if the manufacturer wants
volume production capability it has to move over to lead-free
Your seating position is critical to long term comfort. I learnt this on a
typing course back in days of old. The forearm needs to be horizontal,
particularly NOT elbow lower. An adjustable chair is good.
I much prefer a disc under the knob so that the middle finger presses on that

I have a birdie problem too close for comfort to the 50MHz SSB calling
frequency of 50.125. The noise is about 22 dB above the noise floor
at it's peak. The noise starts to come into my passband around
50.125.35 and is present for ~ 2 KHz.
Here is a spectrogram plot of it taken at 50.126.45:
Hello ,
today I've got my first K2 problem after several years with no pb. I have'nt
open the box yet.
Symptom:
when powering the K2 , the elecraft text appears on the LCD , followed by
the frequency where it was used before I got the pb . No noise at all in the
AF , and no keyboard keys

I stopped by the Elecraft booth and got a demo of the K3 from Wayne

sound better than the IQ. Here is a photo of the K3 in mid-demo.

I priced the tube about 1 1/2 years ago. Contact EIMAC sales. I believe
their quote was on the order of $600 - $700.

Also be sure to carefully check the schematic; the one in the 2007 Handbook
contained many, many errors.

The latest price I see for an 8877/3CX1500, from Alpha, is $950.00. You don't
want to smoke one of those puppies!

Last I heard the 3CX1500D7 (not an 8877) was only available
to hams directly from Eimac. This is a different animal than

Doug,
Dom,
Look first for an unsoldered connection somewhere on the Control Board
or on the Front Panel Board (the control board is the most likely place
for the problem).
Often unsoldered connections can work for several years before they
develop enough oxidation to cause a break in what was
Hi;
40-50 ma of grid current should get you about 1500 W out. Don't over drive
the tube and it will last for years and years.
Eimac tests the 8877 key down at 30 MHz , 3kw for hours before it's sold.
It's a very good tube.

Eimac is a division of CPII (Communications and Power Industries,

Eimac products. These tubes can last a lifetime in Amateur service if
treated with respect. I don't know about this particular tube, but

Hi Bob;
That's correct, the 3CX1500A7 and D7 are completely different tubes. My
remarks were from experience with the 3CX1500A7, the 8877. I don't know
anything about the D7. If the tube is a 3CX, then it's a Triode (unless the
coding has changed).
