Brett,

On Rev. D of the Main DSP Board, mic coupling cap C28 was increased from 0.1
uF to 1 uF. On the alternate mic path, R24 and R26 were scaled from 1K to
10K while keeping C36/C37 at 1 uF. A 10x scaling increase in series
resistance has the same net effect on the low-frequency turnover point as
does a 10x increase in series capacitance.

Line In was affected the same way with an increase at R18/R20 from 1K to 10K
while keeping 1uF of series capacitance. The 10K + 1uF combination is good
for keeping circuit Z and low-end audio response reasonable while minimizing
SMT parts size and cost.

Connect the tip of the CM500 mic connector to the mic input pin of the

K2 mic connector through a resistor of about 5K (value not critical),

K2 mic connector.

Two ways to do this. For both you need to buy an 8-pin connector. Method
1) Cut the connector off the CM500, strip the wires and identify which
color goes to which pin. Strip the wires from the headset and wire them
to the 8-pin connector.

Method 2) Don't cut any wires. Buy a female 1/8-inch jack from Full
Compass (a very good pro audio vendor in Madison, WI) and make an
adapter.

You'll pay $1.30 for one connector and about $8 to ship it. :) That's
silly, of course, but it's how life is. So instead of buying only one
connector, think about other connectors you need and stock up. I did
this about two weeks ago and bought ten each of four types of hard to
find connectors.

I strongly recommend method 2. You'll find that this mic and headphones
work really well on a computer, and on the K3. For these uses, you need
no adapter at all -- they plug straight in.

Note that I haven't identified which pins on the K2 connector are which
-- that depends on how you wired it when you built it, so check the K2
manual and your build notes for that detail.

If it's not too late I would like to add another couple of requests.

1) Add Accukey emulation so I can send CW with the K3.

2) Since the new DSP mods extends the bandwidth down to minus DC, implement
phasing detection to improve the opposite sideband rejection. Even without the
bandwidth extension, the SSB opposite sideband rejection is not the greatest.

switch sequence automation via macros, improved DVR interaction with

As we head into 2010, we'd like to refresh the master firmware list

We're also planning a renewed effort to assist application software

[Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40

2010-01-15 Thread djmd

Hello,

I have been trying to troubleshoot my antenna system, and have been trying
to avoid the dreaded high swr post, but I've run out of ideas, so I'm
turning here.

First let me explain my system. 67' dipole fed by 16' of window line. That's
connected to an Elecraft balun. From the balun, there's a short piece of
coax going to a barrel and into the basement (through a piece of cement
backerboard. From inside the basement, there is another piece of coax, about
12', connected to the barrel, and going up into the bedroom directly to a K2
with an autotuner.

Before the K2, I was using a Yaesu FT840 with an MFJ tuner. After tweaking
the window line length and the actual length of the dipole, I never really
had a problem with SWR (well, according to what the MFJ was saying, which
may or may not be totally accurate.) Usually 1.5:1 or under on all bands.

With the K2/KAT2 in place, the SWR reported by the tuner is all over the
place. The only one that gets less than 1.5:1 is 30m. Most bands are pretty
random, anywhere from 3:1 to 7:1. However, on 20 and 40, it generally does
not get below 9.9:1.

I've tried 4 different lengths of coax between the barrel (inside) and the
rig... 3', 6', 12' 20'. I've tried a couple different lengths between the
balun and the barrel on the outside.

When I attach the balun directly to the K2 I get 1.3:1 on all bands (most
are 1:1.) With a short piece of coax between the rig and the balun, I get
the same results. I've also attached my dummy load to the barrel on the
outside of the house, and tested it from the shack, and I saw 1:1 no
problem.

I totally understand the concept that if A works and B works, A+B
doesn't necessarily work. I understand it's a whole system. But I've tried
so many different combinations of coax on each side, and don't understand
why my SWR is basically infinity:1 on 20 and 40, when they seemed to match
reasonably with the old system. I have not tried different lengths of window
line between the dipole due to the fact that I had it perfectly trimmed for
my old system. But I have plenty of it and would be open to trying anything.

Just trying to get the most I can out of my modest 10W. :) Any suggestions
would be appreciated!

73,

Dave

Dave,

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40

2010-01-15 Thread Wes Stewart
I think he would be better off throwing away the window line and eliminating
the tuner.

Cut the length of the dipole for resonance on 40M and then add a 20M dipole in
parallel at the feed point. There will be some interaction, which can be
lessened by orienting the dipoles at right angles to each other or at least
getting some angular separation.

Conventional wisdom (not always correct) says to use a 1:1 current balun at the
antenna.

With only 10W you don't want to be throwing it away in lossy tuners and
mismatched transmission lines.

Wes N7WS

ps. The only tuner I use in my shack is the pi-net in my L4-B.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio monitor delay

2010-01-15 Thread Lyle Johnson

I've not noticed any significant delay in the TX monitor, and I know I
would find it disconcerting if it was there. Not sure if TX EQ, or
some other option, might introduce such a delay.

The delay is due to: audio input anti-aliasing filter in the A to D, TX
AF filtering, phase shift network, interpolation filter (conversion from
12 kHz sampling rate to 48 kHz sampling rate) , post-IF clipper filter,
decimation filter (conversion from 48 kHz sampling rate to 12 kHz
sampling rate), reconstruction filter (part of the D to A).

We thought it best to allow you to hear the effects of the IF signal
processing, so delays are unavoidable. Most people do not notice as the
K3 uses filters optimized to minimize delays. Note that Tx EQ adds zero
additional delay. Like the Rx EQ, the Tx EQ just adds more constraints
to the AF FIR filter generator.

There may be opportunity to further redice delays by combining some
filter functions. One of the items on my list of background tasks :-)

Hi Dick,

Alignment of the K3 is performed either by using a computer utility or via
the front panel. You don't have to adjust anything. Also, assembly of
the K3 is like putting a PC together. There is no soldering involved. The
only difference between one option and the other is time and money.

Re: [Elecraft] Advantages of Factory Assembed Tested K-3 vs. a Kit?

2010-01-15 Thread Phil Hystad
I think the K3 goes together much better then a PC. I built my K3 a week ago
and I am still in awe of the precision of engineering that went into that K3
kit. Parts went together smoothly just as if they were designed to do that --
of course, which they are but the fit was perfect.

There is only one little wish and that is I wish for slightly smaller fingers
for just one or two steps in the K3 kit building process. Now, this was really
not a problem but it was a bit tight but still what I would call easy. I mean,
no sweat on my brow for this job at all.

Alignment? What alignment? I used the K3 Utility program -- your alignment
steps consist of hitting a few buttons on the K3 Utility screen! Simple as
3.14159+. And, it is probably just as simple to do it from the screen but a
little more time consuming.

I would imagine, judging from the ads, that a factory built K3 may have a
slightly higher resale value but that doesn't matter to me since I doubt I'll
ever sell mine!

Also, since I saved nearly $400 building it that's probably a wash anyway.

I sure enjoyed assembling the radio and it definitely gives me a sense of pride

Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software

2010-01-15 Thread Wes Stewart
If I use my XG2 as a source into the K3 and set the SSB BW to the default
settings for my 2.8KHz 8-pole filter (100Hz to 2.9KHz) the signal which is S9
at its peak is still S7 at zero beat.  A 100 Hz beat note on the wrong sideband
is still S3 and a 200 Hz beat is S1.

The equalizer has no effect of the s-meter.

If I run this same test on my TS-870, even with the lower pass band set to
zero, there is no opposite sideband, nada, zip.  That's because the '870 uses
the phasing method of detection in addition to crystal and DSP filtering.

I am no DSP expert but I have been told that this would be pretty easy
implement in DSP. So why not do it?

The S meter measures the amount of signal that gets through the filters. I
don't see how the detection method would affect it.

I just ran the same test. With my 2.7KHz filter I got S6 at zero beat,
otherwise the results were much the same as yours. I admit it doesn't look
too impressive, but I don't have anything else to compare it with. The S
meters on other radios tend to be a lot more sensitive over the range up to
S9 (i.e. fewer dB per S-point) which would make the opposite sideband
rejection *look* better.

I think you can move the filter further away from the carrier by playing
with the offset values in the filter setup.

[Elecraft] First report about my new Yamaha CM-500

2010-01-15 Thread Hector Padron
Well folks, finally after 2 months wait my boomset from Yamaha, arrived this
afternoon.
It look and feel very professional, the headset is big enough to cover my ears
completeley,it isolate me from the outside world, they feel confortable.
When I plug it into my K3 front panel phones jack,my first impression was WOW!!
this sound great, for years I was using the Sony MDR-V150 that are sold in local
audio stores for $20 and I thougt they were the best in the market, they really
sound wonderful with any radio but these Yamaha leaves in the dust my
old Sony, the audio quality is awsome,if you hear AM broadcast stations the
lows are deep solid without any distorsion, even on ESSB If you find some one
transmitting that wide, you enjoy that sweet sound.
Now comes the mic,it needs 3V DC power,it comes with a little plastic case
where you insert a couple of AAA batteries to feed the mic, then I connected it
to the rear mic input and trough the quick config menu set it to rPH and
bingo, nice TX audio, the gain is much higher than any of all the mics I have
been using with my K3,so I had to lower the mic gain to just 10 and comp to
same level,VOX works very easy with this mic,I set lastly the mic EQ and my
audio goes very well balanced from 100 to 3000 hz.
Its 00:30 UTC in SE FL now,I am on 40M if anyone will like to hear me on the
air with it I will be available all night, just send me a direct email.
I can tell that for just $38 this is a great investment that will put Heil to
think about how to improve their mics or at least make them more afordable.
If you have not order one of these, don't hesitate,do it.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40

2010-01-15 Thread djmd

It's the BL-2 switched balun that I have been using, and have tried both
modes. Forgot that detail. I have also tried one of those baluns built from
PVC - can't remember the manufacturer. It's a 1:1 as well. Same results.

No analyzer yet, but I really should think about getting one. Planning on a
lot of antenna experimentation this year.

I have actually thought of eliminating the coax. I'm not sure if I can use
the same route as the coax, with the metal window frames, gas pipe, water
pipes, all nearby in the basement. But what about going right through the
brick? I would not be opposed to doing something like this.

And re: your follow up - all the testing was done with the KAT2. I have
never disconnected it.

I also should have mentioned that I do plan on using this antenna system
with my old radio as well. Only 10w on the K2, but 50 or so with the Yaesu
as well. (mostly digital and CW.)

Is that a 1:1 balun or a 4:1 balun. Usually a 1:1 works better, but
whichever balun you are using, try the other one and see what happens.
Do you have an antenna analyzer? or can you borrow one? If so, what is
the impedance at the end of the coax? Both the resistive and reactive
components please - just the SWR does not provide much information on
how to advise you to proceed.

You may be better off eliminating the coax entirely and running the
window line all the way into the shack.

 Hello,

I have been trying to troubleshoot my antenna system, and have been
 trying
to avoid the dreaded high swr post, but I've run out of ideas, so I'm
 turning here.

First let me explain my system. 67' dipole fed by 16' of window line.
 That's
connected to an Elecraft balun. From the balun, there's a short piece of
coax going to a barrel and into the basement (through a piece of cement
backerboard. From inside the basement, there is another piece of coax,
 about
12', connected to the barrel, and going up into the bedroom directly to a
 K2
 with an autotuner.

Before the K2, I was using a Yaesu FT840 with an MFJ tuner. After
 tweaking
the window line length and the actual length of the dipole, I never
 really
had a problem with SWR (well, according to what the MFJ was saying, which
may or may not be totally accurate.) Usually 1.5:1 or under on all bands.

With the K2/KAT2 in place, the SWR reported by the tuner is all over the
place. The only one that gets less than 1.5:1 is 30m. Most bands are
 pretty
random, anywhere from 3:1 to 7:1. However, on 20 and 40, it generally
 does
 not get below 9.9:1.

I've tried 4 different lengths of coax between the barrel (inside) and
 the
 rig... 3', 6', 12' 20'. I've tried a couple different lengths between the
balun and the barrel on the outside.

When I attach the balun directly to the K2 I get 1.3:1 on all bands
 (most
are 1:1.) With a short piece of coax between the rig and the balun, I get
the same results. I've also attached my dummy load to the barrel on the
outside of the house, and tested it from the shack, and I saw 1:1 no
 problem.

I totally understand the concept that if A works and B works, A+B
 doesn't necessarily work. I understand it's a whole system. But I've
 tried
so many different combinations of coax on each side, and don't understand
why my SWR is basically infinity:1 on 20 and 40, when they seemed to
 match
reasonably with the old system. I have not tried different lengths of
 window
line between the dipole due to the fact that I had it perfectly trimmed
 for
my old system. But I have plenty of it and would be open to trying
 anything.

Just trying to get the most I can out of my modest 10W. :) Any
 suggestions
 would be appreciated!

 73,

 Dave

oh, and yes, I was definitely getting a 1:1 on the KAT2 between the radio and
the dummy load. I put the dummy load in at all points and saw 1:1.

Dave,

If you did not disconnect the KAT2, then please tell us the setup (all
the connections) when you have SWR readings below 1.5.
That may be capable of providing some sort of clue.

I just received my CM-500s and am using the rear mic jack. Works fine that
way with lo gain, bias on.

As Jim reported, the mic has a lot of gain. It's quite bassy compared to the

I opened the package and 10 minutes later I'm all set. The ear pieces are
nice and large. Comfy so far.

Re: [Elecraft] monitor delay

2010-01-15 Thread Al Lorona
I just consulted with my wife about this. She is a speeth pathologist and
audiologist.

There is actually a slight benefit to be gained by delaying the monitor signal
ever so slightly. The benefit is you hear yourself a bit more accurately than
if there were no delay whatsoever.

The reason is called bone conduction. Plug both of your ears securely with
your fingers and talk. You can still hear yourself, and this is due to the bone
mass between your mouth and your inner ear conducting sound. When you're
adjusting your transmit audio you don't want bone conduction interfering with
how you really sound.

Although the best method remains having someone else listen to your transmit
audio while you speak, you can help your brain tune out the bone-conducted
sound to a degree if the sound reaching your ears is delayed a little bit.

This is a happy side effect of the delay in the monitor.

When I plug it into my K3 front panel phones jack,my first
impression was WOW!! this sound great, for years I was using
the Sony MDR-V150 that are sold in local audio stores for
$20 and I thougt they were the best in the market, they
really sound wonderful with any radio but these Yamaha
leaves in the dust my old Sony, the audio quality is
awsome,if you hear AM broadcast stations the lows are deep
solid without any distorsion, even on ESSB If you find some
one transmitting that wide, you enjoy that sweet sound.
Now comes the mic,it needs 3V DC power,it comes with a
little plastic case where you insert a couple of AAA
batteries to feed the mic, then I connected it to the rear
mic input and trough the quick config menu set it to rPH
and bingo, nice TX audio, the gain is much higher than any of
all the mics I have been using with my K3,so I had to lower
the mic gain to just 10 and comp to same level,VOX works
very easy with this mic,I set lastly the mic EQ and my audio
goes very well balanced from 100 to 3000 hz.
Its 00:30 UTC in SE FL now,I am on 40M if anyone will like
to hear me on the air with it I will be available all
night, just send me a direct email.
I can tell that for just $38 this is a great investment
that will put Heil to think about how to improve their mics
or at least make them more afordable.
If you have not order one of these, don't hesitate,do it.

ALL digital systems have some delay (known as latency) for
two reasons. First, there must be A/D and D/A conversion.
Second, any DSP system requires some processing cycles to do
what it does. The amount of latency (in msec) depends on the
sampling rate, the bandwidth, the number of bits, the speed of
the processors, how much processing is going on, and to some
extent, the skill of the programmer. If both radios use DSP,
their latencies are additive.

We humans don't notice the delay unless we have something to
compare it to. That can be the live sound of our own voice, or
the audio from your transmitter monitored in another receiver.
And we're sort of used to delay -- it takes time for sound to
travel through the air, roughly 0.8msec per foot (varies a bit
with temperature).

The internet has a lot of latency -- 50-100msec is typical.
This is one of the key issues with a remote station, and it
makes contesting from a remote station a real challenge.
Internet latencies are additive to the velocity of propagation,
and are due to the TCP/IP protocols used to route data packets
and the communications between equipment that routes those data
packets.

Re: [Elecraft] Hats

2010-01-15 Thread Jim McDonald
Who pays for hats that are given away? In the end, the customers do, of
course. Elecraft has small, informative, cost effective magazine ads that
maximize the return on their advertising budget by targeting their niche
market.

They don't have broad product lines as the Japanese companies do, so they
don't have to appeal to such a broad spectrum of customers.

I'd prefer they focus on making the radios that meet our needs and continue
to deliver outstanding support than spend money on hats. All of my Yaesu
hats sit on a shelf in the closet.

Now if they want to have caps made and sell them as Ten-Tec does, that's
fine.

Actually, I wonder why we're now stuck on monitor delay. In a digital system,
you can't get around it. It's there ... period. The option, of course, is to
go back to an all analog transmit chain, with no digital delays. And that

Perhaps just getting over it and finding something else to be bothered about is

I was going to say, all of that being complained about, can be set any
way you want. Try the SHIFT control on the front panel. Set the
crossover *anywhere you want it*. The SHIFT setting is remembered by
mode.

Being able to hear down there was specifically requested by some who
do not share your tastes. In the past the firmware would NOT ALLOW
that degree of downward shift. Now both of you can now set it like
you want it.

The equalizer has no effect of the s-meter.

If I run this same test on my TS-870, even with the lower pass band set to
zero, there is no opposite sideband, nada, zip.  That's because the '870
uses the phasing method of detection in addition to crystal and DSP
 filtering.

[Elecraft] Kit or not to kit

Puting the K3 together is the only way to go. As stated in previous
emails, when a mod comes up, you already have a good idea on how to do
it. For example I put in the new DSP board. I did have the assembly
book infront of me. Short of losing a few parts and cracking a knob.
It was long, but simlpe. I am 59 years old, making kits takes me back.

The 16 feet of window line makes me wonder if you're not trying to do
a half-size G5RV, but got the top dimensions wrong. It would be 51'
(instead of 67 which is REALLY bad on 20 meters), or a little longer,
say 54' if you wanted to load on 17m and 12m.

My K2/10 and the auto tuner will match most anything, but your lengths
are not anything I would do on purpose for multiband : )

You may be better off eliminating the coax entirely and running the

 djmd wrote:

 Dave

[Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40

2010-01-15 Thread Daniel Paul Perez
Dave,

 Thanks for posting this.

I'm going through the exact same exercise with my KX-1 KXAT1 and
Icom703+. Glad to know I'm not alone. The Icom is able to tune just
fine and when I switch the KX1 does not tune all bands – not on 40M.
The KX1 tuner is optimized for shorter lengths of wire. I too wanted to
use one antenna for both radios. I wonder if the K2 is optimized for a
shorter wire? I find the more coax I insert between the 4:1 balun and
radio the better the Icom tunes and performs and the opposite for the
Elecraft -- it then loses 80, 40, 30 and barely tunes 20. It’s really
odd. I get perfect SWR with a dummy load and KX1.

I'll try a few things over the next few days per Elecraft. But
will be very interested in what you find. Is the window ladder line 450
ohm?

Does Elecraft give guidance on how the tuners are optimized?
Eighth to quarter wavelength?

I want to be sure as you do that the max power goes out.

 Best,

Daniel ad1p

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40

 Best,

Daniel ad1p

[Elecraft] K3 initial resistance check on PPs at 1.9K ohm.

2010-01-15 Thread Richard Hill
I have a low resistance on the power poles for my first resistance check
and R36, but U12 and U13 are OK. I disassembled the sides and front
panel, checked for missed masking tape or other issues, reassembled
everything, and have repeatable low results. I verified resistance
measurements by checking known resisters.

Low12VDC PP connectors. Required: 3K ohms Measured: 1.85K ohms
LowR36 and ground. Required: 150 ohms, measured: 100 ohms
OKU12 and ground. Required: 500 ohms, measured: 1.85K ohms
OKU13 and ground. Required: 150 ohms, measured: 2.50K ohms

I think this is telling me I have

I started with a multi-range DMM, but discovered an intermittent probe
and had to use a single range (x1K ohm scale) analog meter. Will try to
get a replacement tomorrow.

Any suggestions for possible causes will be appreciated. This is my
third kit (Rock-Mite, K1 and now a K3).

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] IF output

2010-01-15 Thread Brett Howard
Ok so I decided to do the IF mod as the P3 will be ordered when it comes
out and I'd like the increased sensitivity. I'm copying elecraft and K3
support cause I wanted to ask a simple question (as well as share the
results). First my question, I didn't have any 13K ohm resistors in
0805 size. So I put an 0603 resistor on the same pads. Will this be
ample or should I replace it with an 0805 for power rating reasons?

I made measurements before and after the modification and collected
results which I figured I'd share.

Signal Generator was a Rhode and Schwartz (sp?) model number unknown.
This signal generator was uncalibrated. However the spectrum analyzer I
was using was a very recently calibrated N9020A which our cal report
gave a clean bill of health and an absolute accuracy of 0.009dBm at
-50dBm. Agilent didn't specify the accuracy at -70 but it was getting
tighter as the amplitude went lower. I did not engage the preamp in the
analyzer.

I was making my measurements at -70dBm as its a common ham amplitude.
I injected the signal at 7.040Mhz (cause I use that w/ my XG2 a lot) @
-70dBm. This input was verified on the spectrum analyzer at the end of
my cable to calibrate cable losses out of the system. I then measured
the output at the IF OUT port at 8.215Mhz.

Before
PreAmp off: -88.2dBm
PreAmp on: -77.0dBm

After
PreAmp off: -77.9dBm
PreAmp on: -66.9dBm

Looks like there is a tad bit of loss with the PA off (7.9dB) but then
again there is 3.1dB of gain with the PA on... Hopefully this jives
with intended results. If not hopefully its a useful data point.

Respectfully

~Brett (KC7OTG)

Re: [Elecraft] KFL3B-FM

2010-01-15 Thread Brett Howard
I'm assuming it was probably just a typo on the order page but being
that I just got an FM filter for Xmas I'm a bit curious.

 I'd like to know too.
