Ken,
All good points and must be done to take full advantage of the KPA's
capabilities. The V1.11 threw me too. I have been communicating with
Elecraft on a separate issue on the K3/PR6/KPA compatibility and they have
noted the highest (Non Released) Version is 1.09. I even checked earlier

Hi Doug VE3MV,

Jim,
Check that your menu CONFIG:DIGOUT1 is set to OFF on 21 MHz. If it is on,
that will inhibit the amp and give you the _21MHz message.

On Tx, the DVR is injected into the Tx audio path *after* the MIC (or

You do not *need* to purchase an additional filter, but you may want to.
If you want to listen to AM (not AMsync), then you would want a wider

I once fixed a KAT100 to the bottom of the K2/100 at the request of the

All that was required was a strip of metal about 1 inch (OK maybe 1.5

The most common cause is T1 connected incorrectly or having

Just to bring everyone up to date on the problem I reported last evening -
doing the K3 Config:Power Set -- per band (as suggested by Ken K3IU) fixed
the problem. Band control works from either the K3 or the KPA500 and K3
power settings are rememberd for all bands. Works slick.

I would also add to consideration that most playbacks are to let the
other end know exactly what they sound like. So adding any equalizing
or processing messes it up. This would be an issue for me because
hard TX EQ and fair amount of CMP are what transforms my soft voice to
something with
Ed,
No, R6 will not influence the bridge null. You are instructed to leave
it out until you check the voltage at U4 pin 1, during receive - it
should be zero - but you can also check that with R6 in. The zero
voltage in receive is the important one to the rest of the K2. If you
do detect
From this it appears TX EQ affects the audio passband in DATA., as
well as, SSB.
No, from that it appears that you have DATA configured for AFSK A and
not DATA A. AFSK A shifts the passband to center on the MARK/SPACE
tones as defined by the MARK frequency - i.e., FC = (MARK+SPACE)/2

Yes, that much works here too.
What doesn't work is setting the KPA500 MENU: BAND CHG to STBY and expecting
that the power out from the K3 will reliably switch to higher power whenever
the amp is in STANDBY mode, both whether invoked by the button on the amp or
by simply changing bands on the
Okay Don thanks again. I did not indicate any voltage during receive. I
think I'm going to wait until I get some sort of watt meter before I

Ed,
Do I recall that you have the Elecraft DL1? If so, you have the perfect
item for calibrating the power - in fact, better than most wattmeters.
Just measure the DC voltage at the diode and calculate the power - set
the forward voltage pot so the K2 indicates that same power, and job done.
The weekly Elecraft SSB net will meet tomorrow (8/14/11) at 1800Z on 14.3035

With the Elecraft DL1, just use the DMM probes.
If you do not have the DL1, connect the RF Probe across the dummy load
(use a Tee adapter if you do not have direct access to the dummy load
terminals) - but keep the power to 5 watts or less to keep from zapping
the diode in the RF probe.
Yep, I agree with Mike. Old 35mm photo film (remember them?) container with
radio shack switch installed on the lid. Prescription drug bottle works too.

Ed,
I would also recommend doing the power calibration on 40 meters - it is
a good compromise. There \is some variation in the response of the
diodes with respect to frequency, and also, if you are using an
oscilloscope to measure the RF voltage, the bandwidth of the 'scope can
cause some

OK, thanks. I had not altered DATA-MD since the radio arrived from

that when I push TUNE I sometime see a fluctuating power indication and

Ed,
Not enough information, so I am forced to make assumptions.
Are you using the RF probe to measure the RF voltage across the dummy
load? If so, 6 volts yields 0.72 watts as you stated, but if you have
the Elecraft DL1 and measure 6 volts, the power is 1.49 watts.
Adjust R1 to agree with
