I do not understand how assigning APF to a PF button makes things any easier. From what I have seen in the comments, the problem is that it is a button Hold problem. PF1 and PF2 are button hold functions - why not just hold the Dual PB button and use it as-is? Some of the cures presented here

NiMH-only far as I know. There are safety issues with Li, and NiCd types aren't often used any more. If several charger settings are offered, it's a sure bet that some user will set it wrong for the battery type being charged. This can damage batteries and in turn cause them to bulge or leak.

I have regained comm with the K3 and load 4.51 successfully. Going through everything, again, I tried the PWR on/SHIFT LO on p 32 of the KE7X manual. This time it worked. That enabled comm between computer and radio, etc. So, I think this is working. Thanks again to everyone for responding.
