[Elecraft] K3 power drop and ERR 12V

2013-01-04 Thread Mark Pride
First time having an issue with my K3 - have the 100 watt module and today, got
an error on the display indicating ERR12V and the power dropped.  Had to adjust
upward to only reach 12 watts.

Need some guidance from the group - I hope the 100 watt module is not blown.
Please advise and thanks!

[Elecraft] I wish Elecraft would make this radio

2013-01-04 Thread N1EU
I wish Elecraft would make an updated, upscaled KX1 for portable use:
cw-only; ruggedized; enhanced auto-tuner; 40-10M (or 80-10M); 5W+; paddle;
enhanced front panel/display with single button/knob access to cw speed, msg
play, RIT etc; enhanced AGC; very light weight; etc. By upscaled, I mean
design it first and then figure out what the price needs to be and not vice
versa. I would gladly pay whatever it would cost.

Barry N1EU
(currently using KX1 and KX3 in the field)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 What Batteries/Quality Power Supply to Choose?

2013-01-04 Thread Peter Lambert
I'd recommend the sanyo 2500maH Pro LSD batteries - I think they're marked
as XXX. The 16 hour charge will ensure a full charge. For me it often
trips out as an over temp once or twice before the charge completes. This
is just the cells producing heat when they reach full capacity. The LSD
bit is Low Sell Discharge - they hold the charge longer than typical NiMH
(this works for me as the KX3 can sit around a while before I take it
bush.

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 What Batteries/Quality Power Supply to Choose?

Ordered a KX3 today and now need some help with what batteries that I need
to order.

As in larger size, exact type, brand, number on times they can be recharged
even best place to buy them. Is an external charger/conditioner needed or
helpful to have? Have never bought rechargeable batteries before so thought
I would turn to the group for input.

The same applies to a small quality power supply to supply the KX3's power.

Thanks to all in advance for your help.

My advice, perhaps a little more definitive than it should be:

Do not get agitated about cost. We are talking 8 * AA, and the good
ones are only $20-30. I have had bad experiences with cheap NiMH
(Nexcell, early failure). It's not worth risking trouble from by
buying junk (see the archives for 'smoke came out of my kx3', which
seems at least possibly due to bad batteries).

Buy only name-brand batteries from one of the well-known brands, which
is at least: Maha/Powerex, Sony/Sanyo (and perhaps more). (I remember
eneloop being made by Sony, but it seems to be Sanyo now.)

Buy only Ultra-low discharge, because NiMH batteries used to have a
moderately high self-discharge rate, and then over the last 7? years
the race for higher claimed capacities led to really high
self-discharge rates, to the point where a battery was totally useless
two weeks after charging. The actual capacity you will experience
from non-ULD batteries will very likely be much less because of this,
unless you really do charge one day and use the next (always).

Do not be overly concerned about capacity, as the difference between
high and low isn't that great. Also the actual capacity you'll see
will not quite be the nominal.

If you're in the mood, get a tester, so you can measure capacity.
Otherwise you don't really know if the cells are still ok. I
recommend the Maha C9000. It takes too many button presses to
operate, but otherwise I like it.

Expect to replace them after a few years. When one in the group of 8
doesn't work so well (test them yearly, or if you notice trouble), buy
a new set for the KX3 and use the remaining good ones for random other
  things.

I have some unlabeled green Sanyo-made batteries that I bought surplus
in 2001 from Hosfelt. These are mostly (13/16?) still ok, and hold a
charge for a few months. You can't buy these any more, and wouldn't
want to, but it's an interesting comment on batteries before the
capacity craze, and a postive Sanyo experience.

Specific recommendations are:

Sanyo Eneloop, nominal capacity 2000 (I tested these, and they were at
1850 mAh (200mA rate) new, and after sitting 129 days, provided 1703
  mAh). That's 92%, and assuming constant-fraction loss, 79% after a
year, which meets their 75% spec.

Maha Imedion, nominal capacity 2100. I have had 8 of these for
several years, using them in pairs in GPS receivers. One has failed,
and the others are fine. I have not done the 129-day experiment, but
they really seem to hold a charge over time fine. But it seems that
now the nominal capacity is 2400.

I would be tempted to try the Eneloop XX, but they seem quite a bit
more expensive than the regular ones, for only 25% more capacity. (If
someone has them, it would be nice to post C9000 results.)

Thomas Distributing is a good place for maha (also sells via amazon).
I've bought things from them over the years with good experiences.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power drop and ERR 12V

2013-01-04 Thread W2RU - Bud Hippisley
Mark --

Having gone through the ERR 12V experience a year ago, I can suggest:

1. It might the a high resistance in the circuit breaker on the rear panel.
2. It might be high resistance in the card edge connector pins that transport
high-current 12VDC for the 100-w KPA3 module into and out of the KPAIO3 which
is vertically positioned at the rear of the K3.
3. There are some other esoteric possibilities that are extremely low
probability, so I won't go into them.

My circuit breaker was fine, but the contacts on the KPAIO3 board were not
doing the job. Elecraft sent me replacement pins for the connectors but in the
interest of time I simply soldered two short jumpers (#12 or #14 insulated
stranded wire) across the offending pin-pairs. It takes longer to describe it
than to do it. It's an hour, start to finish, including taking one side panel
off the K3 to get at the appropriate pins on the KPAIO3 and mating boards.

Support (Gary Surrency) at Elecraft has detailed info and pictures.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 What Batteries/Quality Power Supply to Choose?

2013-01-04 Thread Chip Stratton
I have 8 of the Sanyo XX 2400 mAh cells in my KX3. Testing capacity with
the MAHA C-9000 gave me more than 2300 mAh for each of the 8 at a 500 mA
discharge rate. They seemed to cluster round 2350 mAh. This was after
performing the break-in cycle on the C-9000 and a 200 mA top-off charge
for a few hours and after a 20 minute rest.

Re: [Elecraft] I wish Elecraft would make this radio

2013-01-04 Thread Jeffrey Blumenfeld
I have a KX-1, and will soon have a KX-3.

I agree they are different radios, in the best possible way. I would also say
that adding the features that would turn a KX-1 into a KX-3 not only makes no
business sense for Elecraft, but also would disserve the loyal customer base.

That said, the two features of the KX-1 I would love to see added/changed are:
1. More digits in the display. Maybe it's just me, but I often have to toggle
among resolutions to remember where I am in the band.
2. More bands. Not necessarily all. For qrp, 20 and 30 are great for daytime,
and 40 and 80 for night. Would be nice to have 15.

I do love the size of the KX-1, which makes it the perfect
take-along-on-a-business-trip-even-when-unsure-you-will-have-time-to-play
radio. I think the KX-3 is a little too big for that, but the perfect size for
taking along when you KNOW you'll have time to play.

Thanks for being Elecraft. Best thing that has happened to fun ham radio since
I was licensed in 1964.

[Elecraft] KX3 Batteries Charger

2013-01-04 Thread Fred Smith
I want to thank everyone that replied to my questions they were most helpful
and I was able to make a more informed decision on my purchase. I also want
to thank those who pointed me to Thomas Distributing they have a lot of
different choices on all batteries/chargers at reasonable prices.

Again the group comes through with all the information needed for our
Elecraft gear.

Thx 73,

Fred/N0AZZ

Fred, if you bought the KXBC3 battery charger option with your KX3, you'll
want to buy the batteries it can charge: AA size NiMH (Nickel metal hydride)
cells with a capacity of 1900 mAh or larger.

If you are not using the KXBC3 battery charger opion, a lot of the other
fellows here can suggest various battery packs they have selected.

[Elecraft] KX3 - Factory Testing identical to Kit Testing?

2013-01-04 Thread Richard

Hello,
I will purchase a new KX3 from Elecraft Sales in a week or two.
If the factory testing upon final assembly is more comprehensive than
what is in the kit assembly manual, it might persuade me to buy the
Factory Assembled version. Is any extra factory testing performed?
The only order page option I have not firmed up is whether to buy the
factory tested version or the kit. I have the skill tools to build the
kit and I have read the assembly manual. However, I am sure that the
Elecraft technicians would do a better job of assembly than I could. My
main concerns with assembling the KX3 myself, are properly cleaning (and
testing) the RF Ground locations and damage to the ribbon connector when
bending it. Of course ESD is always a concern, but I have an ESD mat,
wrist strap, etc.
The extra cost of the factory build is not an issue. In fact I would
look at the extra expense as an insurance policy that I would have a
working radio in top condition. (Shipping damage could change that.)
My biggest kit fear is that something wouldn’t work after I built it;
and it was my fault. If a factory assembled kit did not pass Elecraft's
final testing, they would immediately resolve it. Still, it appears that
significant kit assembly problems are extremely rare.
I suppose I would get some satisfaction from assembling the KX3 kit, but
not quite as much as if I was melting solder. Would kit builders please
share any insights?

All recommendations are welcome; including buy both and see for myself.
Thanks 73,
Richard, AI4SH
PS. My intended use of the KX3 is for cw qrp base station operation. I
have a K1 that I will retire from the desk and use as my portable station.

I have a KX-1, and will soon have a KX-3.

I agree they are different radios, in the best possible way. I would also
say that adding the features that would turn a KX-1 into a KX-3 not only
makes no business sense for Elecraft, but also would disserve the loyal
customer base.

That said, the two features of the KX-1 I would love to see added/changed
are:
1. More digits in the display. Maybe it's just me, but I often have to
toggle among resolutions to remember where I am in the band.
2. More bands. Not necessarily all. For qrp, 20 and 30 are great for
daytime, and 40 and 80 for night. Would be nice to have 15.

I do love the size of the KX-1, which makes it the perfect

This has been argued to death. Please check the archives.

3 vga output for the k3 itself

To do what? The FFT is done in the P3 and the K3 currently has no such
capability.

Perhaps, instead, an outboard hardware device that interfaces with the
present K3 may be more what you'd like. It could incorporate a color
display, and provide an Ethernet port that, like modern consumer network
devices, could incorporate firewalling and other techniques to limit
radio control to authorized users and so on. As it would be an add-on
it would allow the K3 to retain its unique portability characteristic.

Now, what I would like to see improved in the K3 is the auto-notch which
seems to use a lot of bandwidth compared to the manual notch and also
often introduces audible distortion to the received audio.
Unfortunately, these are a couple of lingering issues that exist in a
radio that I am otherwise completely pleased with.

2013-01-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I thought basics was a straight key, Hi!

But to your question, the decision for me would be whether you want to use
Iambic (squeeze) keying. Some hate it. Some (including myself) love it. It
does take practice.

If you aren't going in for Iambic keying, you don't need dual paddles. That
said, most paddles are dual these days so you always have the option of
trying Iambic mode.

I can't advise on what make of paddle. Most of my CW is sent with a bug.
When using paddles I have an original Scotia dual paddle that I picked up at
an auction back in the 1980's.

More recently, I use the KXPD3 on the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggested key/paddle for CW for a the K3 and others (not expensive)

2013-01-04 Thread Thomas Horsten
Hi Cliff,

If you are not aspiring to be a speed demon (40WPM plus), Iambic keying
is the most comfortable and it is very easy to learn. So get a dual lever
paddle. You say not too expensive, that rules out my favorite, Begali
Sculpture, but there is a reason that the Bencher BY-1 is considered the
standard dual-lever paddles by a lot of people, and that is that it's
relatively cheap (and widely available used), and performs relatively well.
It's not a Begali by any stretch of the imagination but it's still precise
enough and has a decent enough feel that you can comfortably roll along at
25-30WPM without getting fatigued or annoyed.

So go for one of those, preferably pick it up used for $30 or so, and do
not try a Begali first or you will not want to touch a Bencher again, but
then again, the Bencher is perfectly good for what it is.

There are many other paddles around, I've tried a Vibroplex once and found
it far too clunky and with a sluggish feel, but maybe that was just that
one (it was a single-lever as well) - definitely wasn't for me.

The KXPD3 for the KX3 is great as well for what it is - it is far better
than a Bencher IMHO, and in a much smaller form-factor, of course using the
KX3 as a counterweight and not suitable for use with a K3 or any other rig.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?

2013-01-04 Thread K4THE
Newbie here with KX3-K #3049. My encoder shaft had 2 very tight spots as I
turned the shaft - even without the knob attached. I hoped it would go away
but after a week of use it was still very tight. I removed encoder and could
see the C-clip and the washer underneath rotating on the threaded shaft. I
applied a drop of 3-in-1 oil to washer clip and worked it in well: turning
shaft while pushing it in and pulling out, more oil - repeat. Reinstalled
encoder and knob. It now turns smoothly and is 95% better. 73 Dennis K4THE

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Factory Testing identical to Kit Testing?

2013-01-04 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Richard,

While we do test and align the PCB boards identically on the kit and
factory assembled KX3s, we do further testing on the assembled units to
insure that we built them perfectly.

Assembled KX3s are given an preliminary TX and RX test after assembly,
followed by a multi-hour burn in rack test. There under computer control
we stress test the KX3 by transmitting key down on each band while
checking temperature, current and power out and also check tuning of the
ATU on each band. This occurs in a repetitive fashion - cycling through
the bands - for a minimum of 8 hours. After passing burn-in, the
assembled KX3 goes to final test on a technicians lab bench, where we
test all RX and TX parameters on all bands, including RX sensitivity, TX
power, Current drain in TX, TX IMD etc. We also do tests on the SSB
audio, CW keying, receive audio and a number of other parameters. Each
added option is also tested in the KX3.

In general we see few failures in burn-in or final test, due to our
extensive testing of the PC boards before assembly (and before packaging
them into kits).

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Received today and filter question..

2013-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

Gil,

The short answer is no.

Use the PBT knob to widen the bandpass out to its limit if you desire.
On CW the limit is 2.8 kHz, and on other modes it goes up to 4+ kHz.
Remember that number represents the audio bandpass limits, the signal
passband in AM is twice the audio bandwidth and in FM it is much wider.

I am not certain where you thought the Roofing Filter would widen the
bandwidth - in fact it restricts the bandpass before feeding the signal
to the DSP ADC. The purpose of the roofing filter is to limit the
number of signals off to the side of your desired signal that will reach
the DSP (and AGC).

Disclaimer: this is not an official fix from Elecraft, nor is the
scratchy encoder necessarily a problem and it will likely smooth out with
use. Proceed at your own risk.

Similar scratchy on mine. Per someone else's suggestion, I removed the
encoder's washer (you don't need to remove the nut), polished both sides
using a Dremel tool (use a polishing bit with a little dab of polishing
compound) -- not a sanding or grinding bit! -- and applied a small bit of
white lithium grease. Great improvement, I'd say 98% smooth.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggested key/paddle for CW for a the K3 and others (not expensive)

2013-01-04 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
Paddles are like boats - you can spend as much or as little as you want.
There are many excellent paddles within most budgets.

Don't take anyone's word for which paddle is best or you will like. It's
a matter of personal preference. The range of qualities and prices is very
broad. Try before you buy unless cost is no object.

If you're on a budget, visit friends or a ham radio store and try their
paddles. Pick the one that feels best that also fits your budget. It will
be a difficult decision but fun to work on.

If you're not on a tight budget, browse the dozens of paddle manufacturer
Web sites, drool over the beautifully machined works of art and pick
whatever looks good to you. Use it for a few months, then repeat the
process. Eventually you will have two or three magnificent paddles on your
shack table and a shelf full of display items to admire or re-sell. It's an
expensive process but lots of fun. ;-)

My favorites that I own: Begali Simplex, Elecraft/Bencher HexKey, Shurr
Profi; used to own: Bencher BY-n; still drooling over: the rest of the
Begali line. I've also owned one paddle that I hated and quickly re-sold. I
won't name it because some folks think it's great!

All my favorites are dual lever because you can use them with or without
iambic keying. Single lever paddles are fine if you want to make a
religious statement against iambic keying.

73 and welcome back to CW!

Paddles are a wonderful project for people who like to make
mechanical things. I build a single lever paddle using the arm
bearing from an old hard drive, lots of brass pieces from the
hardware store, two super magnets for springs, and some silver
wire from a jeweler friend for the contacts. I don't have enough
CW experience to comment on how good it is, but people at my ham

project while my T1 tuner kit was backordered. :-)

2013-01-04 Thread Rick Stealey

One thing you can do to help decide - try adjusting the spacing. Note the
pitch of the adjusting screws and how tight they hold their position.
Put a piece of paper into the gap and see how much control you have in
adjusting the controls. yes, you should be able to set the gap to this spacing
and have it hold. Another poster would not name names. I will, because I've
owned them.
Yes a Begali can do this. No a Vibroplex vibrokeyer cannot.

The other choice you have is between spring loaded or magnetic. I used spring
loaded keys since 1965, till I got a Begali in 2009. I went through Vibroplex,
Bencher, Kent, and a Japanese one that escapes me right now.
All the top ones Begali makes are magnetic. The paddles hardly move at all.
The gap is so close you can hardly feel it. I'm not good with mechanical
things but I know there are bearings inside that make it possible (to have a
close gap and still be very precise). Mine is a Begali magnetic classic, but
it has plastic actuating arms. My next one will be a Sculpture, but the big
decision is should a P3 or a sub receiver for the K3 come first?
Decisions, decisions. Ain't it great?

[Elecraft] K3 power drop and ERR 12V - resolved

2013-01-04 Thread Mark Pride
Found issue - when disassemblying the radio to access the multi pin connector,
had to removed the wires from the circuit breaker.  One wire pulled out of the
crimped lug connector.  Ended up removing some of the insulation on that
connector and soldered the wire on (the crimp area was pretty messed up).
Works perfect now.  Thankfully did not have to go the full route of replacing
pins but did see the discoloring, so at some point, this will probably rear its
ugly head again.

Got a lot of help here - thanks great resource!  HNY all.

Regards,

Mark, K1RX

Need some guidance from the group - I hope the 100 watt module is not blown.
 Please advise and thanks!

Mark- Did you find the problem?  Have you checked the header connector on the
main RF board for corrosion?  Some early k3's have had this problem.  Connector
is where the KPA100 hooks up to RF Board.  You have to remove the KPA100 to
check this.
A friend of mine had this problem with his k3 and he did the field fix for
this, which is to solder across certain pins.  If this is it, let me know and I
will try to find the information on how to fix it or maybe the reflector
archives might have this.

Hope this helps

Re: [Elecraft] Suggested key/paddle for CW for a the K3 and others (not expensive)

2013-01-04 Thread Clifford Hynds
Thank you Ken and everyone else for their input and suggestions, has given
me some idea , what I would like is an iambic that could be changed to a
single paddle if I find that is not my thing.

A really good straight key is of cause an option but want to try the
paddles first.

 Hi Cliff !

 I have a Bencher/Elecraft HexKey. It's -very- good. I also have two
Bencher BY-series paddles, and they're good. Paddles are like women
perhaps ... but a lot less expensive to audition.

I've been a CW for 61 years ... even made a living with it ... but never
managed to be good at iambic keying. I've recently purchased a really
fine straight key ... a Model ZN-HKC by Tony, N3ZN.

2013-01-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Double paddles work non-Iambic with no changes whatsoever. Just do not
squeeze them! That's why 99.9% of the paddles sold are double paddles.

[Elecraft] mmtty setup for k3

2013-01-04 Thread John
I am setting my k3 up again for rtty contest. I have went through the
N3ME info and have everything working. My question is: Tony mentions to
adjust the mic level for 4 bars solid with 5 flashing, which I do, but
Tony also mentions to adjust the CMP also. Mine is set at 0 and it does
not change when I try to turn it. Tony says his is at level 6. I am
curious to why mine CMP level does not change off of 0? If I already
have 4 bars solid and 5th bar flashing by using the MIC knob is that
ok. I just don't want to damage anything on my new computer or my
K3-which I just got back from the shop. If all is set ok as listed
above then I will be good to go tomorrow I hope. Any input would be great!!
