I have both K3 and KX3 and used both radios for contesting.
KX3 has much lower BDR and unusable when there is another local or
strong inband transmitter. It also switches preamp off and ATT on
automatically when the radio hears inband signal of 59+30db or more.
Another shortcoming of KX3 is

Hi Rick,
FT8 and similar modes are weak signal modes, and for difficult paths,
it's all about signal to noise, not signal to QRM. For several seasons,
I've been running legal limit to fill in DXCC to eastern EU on 160M.
I must be missing something. FTn isn't like CW or SSB where the loudest
station often wins in a pileup. If you have enough FTn signal to be decoded
reliably, say -10 or better, how does more power enhance your chances of
getting through? WSJT-X chooses whom to answer based on a "first decoded"
I had a discussion about this sort of madness with Joe Taylor, creator of FT8
and WSJT-X. Here's what he had to say about it:
"Hi Richard,
"Yes, it's annoying when people engage in a QRO arms race to make more QSOs or
make them more quickly with FT8. Using high power is one thing when
I got HD8R with 100 watts CW to endfed wire antenna. Here's a short
video of my trusty old K3 and Bunnell sideswiper in action:

I suggest you get WSJT-X working as a stand-a-lone application before
getting the other applications running. This will allow you to get the
audio levels for RX and TX configured. And will allow you to use CAT
control for the radio and PTT mode.
DX Labs and Win4K3 can come on board
If you're just going to use WSJT-X (or JTDX, which is what I use) for
non-contest / casual operation on the main FT8 frequencies, I don't think
using the split/fake-it option is necessary. Contesting is a different
thing. To get started with casual use, just use the TX/RX split option on

Brian,
Everything Jim said, plus a couple additional recommendations:
1- I would start by using WSJT-x by itself for a little while, configured
to talk directly to the K3, without DXLab Commander or Win4K3 running. This
will allow you to get familiar with WSJT-x, its configuration, making

What digital modes? For WSJT modes, study their documentation.
For all digital modes, use Digital A, feed audio from computer to Line
Input (Mic Gain becomes Line In Gain). Adjust audio
Keep in mind that if you use the XVn OFS feature on a KX3 (latest
firmware) and your offset is bigger than 0.66, you trigger a firmware
bug where the firmware will crash and squeak if power-off and power-on
the KX3.
Unfortunately, the KX3 is not so nice with transverters; there is a

I normally use a K3s in a highly competitive 6A field day environment. One
year my K3s had a problem and a KX3 was substituted. I did not notice any
problems in the multi transmitter environment with the use of the KX3.

Hi,Regarding th use of external Transverters with KX3, the functions "XVn RF"
and "XVn OFS" have to be used. The XVn RF can only be set to a full MHz, and the
XVn OFS can be set ±9.99 kHz.If You have a transverter with a slightly bad
crystal, that will not oscillate on the intended frequency,
Have an older K3 that is now out of balance with audio on the headphone line.
Right side is now low compared to the left.
It was at the factory just over a year ago.
Is there an adjustment for this?
