I used to complain about the K3's NR functions, but now I have a much
newer TS-890s sitting next to it, and in comparison, the K3's NB and NR
are far better. So everything is relative.

There was a very good description of the K3 NR written by Lyle, the DSP
designer for Elecraft. It may be on their website.
Basically, as I understand it, the NR is designed to work against random noise.
Noise that has a correlated component, like line noise, it doesn’t address as

I no longer have an Elecraft radio so this Y-Box by N6TV is no longer of
any use. I also have a couple of cables for it. It was set up for me to

Thanks to all who chimed in about this. I will be trying everyone’s advice.
I still think it’s sad that all I have to do to significantly block noise in
SSB on my old IC-706MkIIG and my IC-7300 is touch one button: most of the noise
is gone and the level of the audio itself hasn’t dropped so

There's an extensive procedure in the manual that I bought separately from the
rig. My stuff is in storage, however, the process for noise reduction worked
solid for me. The k3s book from Fred Cady https://elecraft.com/collections/books

Richard,
I saw this explanation of a procedure to adjust the NB from this reflector.
I’ve tried it and it works.

Is there ANY way to make the NR feature work worth a damn? In general, when I
turn it on, the audio level drops to almost nothing, and none of the Adjustment
setting do much of anything.
My other two radios, an old Icom and a new Icom, both have very effective NR
features.

Just finished SS, and on many occasions when switching bands I found
myself overdriving the KPA-1500 on the new band. No harm done, but I
thought the K3/KPA-1500 combination was supposed to manage drive on a
per-band basis. Did I get that wrong?

Chris,
Yes it would. You can de-tune a bit to make RX sound OK, but you can't
do that in transmit.
Make sure the filter selected for SSB is the OP1 filter.

Thank you for the info. The issue with my K2 is with the transmit audio,
so would the same BFO frequency for the receiver affect the transmitter?

Chris,
That condition is normally the result of improper alignment of the BFO
frequencies for the upper sideband.
There should be no difference is width for LSB and USB that could be

Use an audio spectrum analyzer (Spectrogram for instance) for best

Kudos to my very good friend Ken, K4ZW, for his stellar CQWW SSB
performance. Claimed score on 3830 of 6,280,820 points being #1 in the
US and #7 worldwide.
Whilst undoubtedly Ken's skill, honed over many years, and his rather
herculean (at least to me) 45 hours in the chair contributed to
