Re: [Elecraft] DM 780 and K3

2008-08-10 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Off the top of my head the K3 should work with all three options:

VOX,
PTT via COM port and
PTT via K3 commands.

In general you need to be sure that the method you chose for TX supports
audio via the rear connector. I am sure there is a user on the forums who
can help - so far I just use my K3 as a receiver, I use my TS-480SAT for
digital mode QSO's.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Hilberling PT-8000 cancelled.

2008-07-25 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
This PT-8000 must have cost Hilberling a few million euro at least. Three
stands at the big Friedrichshafen show (I am sure they were there in 2006),
development and salaries and... I am sure Hilberling's company can afford
this, it has a very high reputation and he holds some very fine patents.

I was always skeptical as the price was so very high - 11,990 euro for a
100W single RX radio (no panoramic display) is a lot, even if it does come
with a nice microphone. I see all docs have been pulled from the website,

[Elecraft] [OT] Hilberling PT-8000 cancelled.

2008-07-24 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

http://www.hilberling.de/news/news.htm

Thank goodness for Wayne Eric!

Translation by Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

The manufacture of the PT-8000 product line has been discontinued.

Due to the constant obstacles which we must overcome in ensuring compliance
with EU-wide governmental regulations imposed on manufacturers, we were
required to make constant design changes to this top-quality transceiver.
The very high design goals which we had set for the PT-8000 could be
fulfilled in a few prototype units. However, guaranteeing this high standard
without limitations in a series production program with many vendors runs
into difficulties which cannot be overcome at a cost level which is still
acceptable.

We are most grateful for the great interest shown in us whilst this project
was underway.

When the memory channel CAT is defined I'll add this and other new features
to HRD.

I agree 100% that XML is the way to go, would be great for interchange.

As soon as Wayne specs the CAT let's define the XML. I'm using XML
exclusively in my new software and will convert HRD over to XML when I next
attack the innards.

Simon Brown, HB9DRV

This XML idea is great...I could make a webpage and application ( hosted
on

my server (or Elecraft's)) where you could go to a webpage, upload your
config, mess about with it and download
it, then, instead of having loads of programs all over the world -
possibly

needing updates, if the format or tagging changed, then we can just change
one option - (select firmware revision) and automatically implement new
features in the XML the idea of being able to edit the memories is
really cool and quite easy to achieve... Perhaps Simon also has some
ideas...

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] UTILITY Improvements

2008-07-02 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
The end user should have no need to look at the XML file, the software you
use will do this for you via a fine user-friendly UI irrespective of the
platform you are using.

An XML file is very easy to edit with Notepad or the editor of your choice.

On http://mannindustries.net/hrd/Junk/ I have two examples of XML files used
in my satellite tracking software:

http://mannindustries.net/hrd/Junk/SatTrackChildWindows.xml which contains
the layout of the windows to be opened when the program starts.

http://mannindustries.net/hrd/Junk/SatTrackObserverDefinitions.xml which
contains a list of satellite observers.

The end user never sees these files but anyone who understands XML can read
them, they are simple to parse (even with Microsoft's XML classes) and are
*very* robust.

Simon Brown, HB9DRV

--
From: Brian Alsop [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Going to something like XML is shooting many people in the foot.

The pencil and paper clip are still alive. Reason: they do the job simply
and cheaply.

For me, I guess it really won't matter. The maximum number of memories
that I'll ever be able to reliable associate with buttons is a few.
Scrolling through 99 choices to find what I want just doesn't seem very
appealing.

First let's start with XML for memories and configuration. At the moment the
configuration is not a great CAT interface but it does work, if we can later
select a configuration entry directly from software (example:
Brightness=Medium, AudioLevel=LedZep) then we're really in business.

In 10 years (or less) the K4 will support loading data direct from XML :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 operating scripts vs. operating tips

2008-06-30 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
At the Friedrichshafen show I was talking to a few fellow members of the
terminally bewildered radio operators club (Last of the Summer Wine
candidates). Their input was:

1) Radios should have a simple and *large* interface.
2) Assuming good performance, usability is more important than price (all
children have left home, wives are radio-friendly, bank balances are
healthy).
3) None bought the K3 despite my recommendations, instead the IC-7700 was
purchased due to 1) above. The size of the radio was the deal killer.
4) Despite price all were drooling over the Hilberling PT-8000, I seriously
expect those who did not yet buy the IC-7700 to buy the Hilberling.

My opinion - radios should be big, mobile phones and tax demands should be
small.

Simon Brown, HB9DRV

--
From: Ian White GM3SEK [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To be fair to Elecraft, that is how 21st-century radios behave.

The rigs we grew up with had stay-put controls because there was no
other choice. Going back to the same frequency, mode, antennas and PA
tuning that we had previously been using on a given band was a complex
ritual involving several different controls - some of which could cause
damage if incorrectly adjusted.

The K3 obviously *could* be programmed to emulate that behavior, so if
anyone really wants to go back there, by all means petition Wayne to
include it as a CONFIG option. We could call it Century= mid20th.

But *please* leave the K3's default setting as 21st!

Limiting factors - well first you should try a side-by-side comparison of
the average internal laptop soundcard and a high-end solution.

With poor soundcards you get:

* Reduced dynamic range, (weak signals will be lost)
* Intermodulation.

You are limiting a very good RX by using a poor soundcard. Good soundcards
will meet the K3's RX dynamic range spec more-or-less and deliver a faithful
signal to your software. Until you try good, bad and ugly side-by-side you
don't know what you are missing.

Also - how do you know that you have not suffered degraded performance
unless you compare two cards?

Using old laptops / soundcards with the K3 is like using a Ferrari 360 with

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Logging programs and internal keyer

2008-05-24 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
1) There is no problem writing a Windows program with accurate timing to key
your radio via a serial or parallel port, this is a common misconception.

2) Winkeyer is an excellent device which can be more closely controlled than
driving a radio via the KY command, even Kenwood's TS-480.

The KY command is OK and does work.

I suggest 2) if your logging program of choice supports it. A quick touch of
the paddles and you're in charge of the sending instead of the Winkeyer,
also the Winkeyer has many configuration options such as Farnsworth. I don't

I do! Providing it can work properly down to around 11vdc input, it
looks to be an Ideal maritime mobile radio.
In MM setups the ATU is typically an auto tuner located away from the

antenna so an internal tuner is no use. Cooling and ruggedness are big
issues.
Having 'ears' to mount it securely with is a big plus.
The USB interface is a great asset here too, allowing for HF fax
reception, rig control etc over a single USB connection.
Finally the time might be nearing to replace all the ic-735's and
ic-728's that are bobbing about out there!

There are quite a few low-price sub notebooks announced in the last few
months, one which has caught my attention is the MSI Wind PC running Windows
XP (for I am a Windows programmer by choice). The CPU chip is very low
power, performance more than adequate for any current digital mode program.

These sub notebooks are not big, not heavy and there's the extra bonus of
using a PC - larger fonts, logging and archiving of received audio for later
playback.

If you would like to use data modes without a full sized computer then a
basic Asus Eee PC, Fldigi and a pair of sound card audio cables will do
the

job, plus it will support more modes than just PSK31 and RTTY, and display
more than a few characters of text. It would be not much bigger and
probably

not cost much more than a custom keyboard which would be required to
interface with the K3's proprietary connector.

The RTTY decoder in fldigi is very good - I use this source in DM780.
Knowing how it works I am sure that a very tight 200Hz or 250Hz filter would

IMO one area where the IC-7700 and co. win out is in ergonomics, especially
for those of us who are members of the Terminally Bewildered club (tired
eyes, colour blindness). Given the extra real estate this may seem like a
daft comparison, but the FTDX-9000's tuning knob(s) and the IC-7700 /
IC-7800 display are excellent. Having said that the K3's use of the

Is an IC-7700 worth the price of 2 x K3? Quite possibly, the first two
shipments are sold out, from the Yahoo! list users are delighted.

direction (N, S, E, W).

A big advantage of the bandscope on the IC-7800 / IC-7700 - you suddenly see
the band coming to life.

The nice thing about an 'all-in-one' solution:

1) Just one USB cable connected to your radio.
2) Very high quality soundcard.
3) Winkeyer built-in.
4) Extra COM ports.
5) Monitor the audio.
6) One chunky cable from the unit to your radio.

End result is a very tidy installation with a high-quality soundcard.

What does the K3 lack that a Rigblaster or Signalink provides? I use
mine with MMTTY, N1MM logging/CW keying and DM780 straight to a sound
card. The TX control in DM780 is via the normal serial cable, in MMTTY
via a simple single transistor keying circuit built into the 15 way
accessory plug. CW keying from N1MM logging is via the serial lead, I
also have a K1EL Winkey which works fine too. The K3 has transformer
isolated line in and line out sockets.

Julian suggests running a bar of ALC - I very strongly disagree. Never, ever
run any ALC with PSK as it degrades the quality of the signal and makes
decoding more difficult.

With digital modes *always* aim for a 100% linear signal. It's not the power
but the quality / purity that matters. What may look good on the other
station's waterfall is not always the best for decoding.

It's not just what you transmit but what you don't transmit that matters.

Re: [Elecraft] Shack PC?

Two suggestions:

1) USInterface.com Navigator - everything in one box and an extra COM port
for your use - look at http://USInterface.com. I have a Navigator and can
vouch for it.

2) MicroHAM's external interfaces - take a good look at
http://www.microham-usa.com - I think Joe W4TV is on this list (I do get
confused at times). I don't have any MicroHAM products simply because I
don't have all the toys available in the market, there will be many
satisfied MicroHAM users on this list :-)

3) Audio only - Tigertronics SignaLinkUSB.

There are some very good *powered* SUB = COM port adapters, for example one
I have provides 4 COM ports. The key word here is *powered*, if you use a
USB hub make sure it's full-spec and *powered* via external mains PSU.

Don't buy cheap junk on eBay!

---

Were I starting from scratch I would use external USB = Serial such as
Navigator / MicroHAM as it really solves the cable salad problem. I actually
took my PCI COM port card out of my radio PC and replaced it with a
satellite TV card as the Navigator had made it redundant.

Be careful of the need for serial ports. Very few new laptops have them.
The Dell Latitudes (or at least several of them) still do. Desktops may

expansion slot so that you can add a serial card with at least a couple of
ports.

Re: [Elecraft] K3

2008-03-06 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Hi,

As has often been said the DSP is very good on its own, but I can clearly
hear the 1kHz and 250Hz filters as they kick in (I think it's 250Hz).

My filters and logic for choice is:

1.8kHz - SSTV, SSB
1 kHz - wide digital modes and CW browsing,
250Hz - PSK, RTTY, CW.

At the moment I am writing and testing SSTV software - this has been 100% of
my spare time for the last three months, so the 1.8kHz filter has been
engaged most of the time. When listening to CW I use 1 kHz / 250Hz.

As I do not suffer from strong signals here I rarely use narrow filters in
digital modes, but the 250Hz really digs signals out of the noise, I really
hear it as I turn the bandwidth down from 300Hz to 250Hz.

The reason you have not heard anything is because Wayne Eric are
negotiating to buy Neverland from Micky Jackson and move the whole
manufacturing operation *and* the 'enhanced customer care' facility out to
Santa Barbara.

Just a rumour, you didn't hear it from me.

Given the high quality of the engineers in the test group it's only to be
expected that there will be enhancements, I wish I had a groups as good as
this for my day job. None of the changes made are critical, I'm sure they'll
be documented later.

As has been said, they are minor changes, FWIW I can't be bothered to add
them.

We have the leading performance radio for the price of an average radio from
Japan, the K3 will only get better as the firmware matures.

The Hilberling comes in a very nice sturdy case, the very highest quality
'buttons and knobs and things' you can imagine. I like the case but prefer
the layout of the K3's front panel.

As for the price - I hear from a dealer that there are quite a lot of
orders.

For the price of just one of those 10W radios, you could have 3 fully
loaded K3/100's. If I had that kind of spare cash to put down on a radio,
I would rather go with a K3.

Re: R: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

2008-02-25 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
It doesn't matter how good or expensive the product is, every high-tech
solution can break. My neighbour's Mercedes SLK 500 broke down after 3 days
and had to be shipped off the Isle of Man to England to be repaired. My
mother's Metro 1000 City (1989) has never had a problem despite being 18
years old and costing 10% as much as the Merc.

This 3/5 review shows that the K3 is a real radio produced by a real company
and used by real people. 100 glowing reviews giving 5/5 would be too good to
be true.

[Elecraft] Two Radios, One Antenna

2008-02-20 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
Assume you have many radios and effectively one antenna (in practice up to 3 at
times). You would only transmit with one radio, the others being used as
high-class receivers, spares etc.

How would you route the antenna?

What I want to avoid is transmitting into a receiver by accident if the
software decides that it would be good to switch to TX.

FWIW I am looking at two K3, one TS-480SAT. I would like to receive on all
three simultaneously and transmit with either a K3 or TS-480SAT.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Convergence

2008-02-15 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
Actually I gave some thought to this project this morning, specifically
allowing many programs simultaneous and transparent access to a K3 where the
programs talk K3 CAT.

My conclusion is that it's easy, the hard part having been written already
by Phil N8VB, specifically his virtual serial cables. I have all the code I
need for this, once running programs such as DXLab, the CW Skimmer program
etc. would just connect to a virtual serial port such as COM22. I see no
show-stoppers, performance would be / could be excellent.

It is very tempting to write this, maybe after the SSTV / HamDRM and WSJT
code is sorted out in one of my projects. I see that it would be of great
benefit to the K3 community, especially the users who are able to run two or
more programs at once. Of course I'm talking about a Windows MFC C++
solution.

I have read something about a software project that should allow several
programs connect to a server and thus remote control different rigs. If I
remember right, the project worked in a way that the commands to the
server were in a unique language, and the server passed on the transceiver
specific code. (something like ADIF in log programs if such a comparison
is

allowed)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Convergence

2008-02-15 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
If I can make good enough progress with my current SSTV / HamDRM work then
I'll put this together late March 2008. This is the only approach that will
work properly, initially it will be for CAT support only, that is it will
not be designed for DTR / RTS toggling etc. which we don't need with the K3
anyway. It will work with W2K / XP / VISTA, the limitation being N8VB's
serial cable code which does work on W2K I think (I know it works on XP and
VISTA).

I'll think about making source code available - I use 3rd-party programming
libraries which I cannot ship (www.codejock.com) but were anyone to obtain
these they could recompile.

Also I'll think about having read-only access - some programs like to watch
all data being read from the radio, for example (I think) StepIR and some
amplifiers such as that one from Italy - Expert-something-1K.

Speaking of amplifiers...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Convergence

2008-02-14 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Taking things a step further - it would not be at all difficult to allow
other programs to send K3 commands to / from the K3 through another program.

This program (server) controls the serial comms and supports an unlimited
number of clients. The clients speak to the radio using the radio's native
protocol through the server.

It's a simple concept, the programming is not too difficult except when
talking with some of the older Yaesu radios. Supporting the K3 / Kenwood /
ICOM like this would be simple.

As for things like split mode - as far as I can remember no ICOM radio
supports this via CAT commands, not even the $10k+ IC-7800 :-(

Simon Brown, HB9DRV

From: Joe Subich, W4TV [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, every program needs to know the radio status at all times.
If one program changes a setting that a second program relies
on without notification, nasty things can happen.

[Elecraft] Still Working

2008-02-13 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
I haven't switched my K3 off since assembling it on November 12th, so it's been
humming away for 3 months non-stop on digital modes, currently SSTV on 80m. I
have a full set of filters, using 1.8kHz at the moment for SSTV.

Just thought I would say this, taking a break from Hilbert Transforms...
