Re: [Elecraft] KPA500

2023-06-05 Thread Ian Kahn

the taps appropriately, for your desired voltage.

Just one correction for you - the WSJT-X modes, of which JS8Call is a

weekend. I was an early order after the "last chance" notice came out, and
paid in full at the time of my order, if that matters.

Re: [Elecraft] Stacking K3-line: variation on recent thread

2022-07-23 Thread Ian Kahn
If it were me, I'd go (bottom to top) KAT500-KPA500-K3.

Make sure to allow plenty of room around the stack for ventilation - at
least a couple of inches all around.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500

2022-07-08 Thread Ian Kahn
Joseph,

There is no soldering required to assemble the KPA500. If you can use basic
tools (screwdrivers, pliers, etc.), you'll have no issue assembling it. The
assembly manual is also VERY well-written.

You should be fine assembling it yourself.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Voice Keying From N1MM+

2022-06-16 Thread Ian Kahn
In this configuration, you may actually need to use the front panel mic
connector. I have a similar setup to yours, except I have the K3DVR in my
K3. I have my computer set up using the rear jacks, as you, for N1MM
Logger+ and other digital mode software connections. But, I've always used
my front mic connector with my headsets.

Another option, have you tried the right size and type splitter on the rear
mic jack? That might let you accomplish your goal, too.

Hope this helps.

As has been stated here repeatedly, Elecraft, like all other electronics

Re: [Elecraft] Waaay OT: A new kind of QRM to be aware of ... warning issued by FCC today

2021-01-17 Thread Ian Kahn
If you are an ARRL member, you also received an emailed statement from them
today, reiterating their position on the appropriate uses of amateur radio.

It isn't surprising that those involved in the January 6 insurrection and
attempted coup used radio comms of SOME kind to organize and coordinate
activities. I hope none involved were hams. If any were, I hope that, at
the very least, their licenses are permanently revoked. Regardless of your
political leanings, there is no room for this kind of behavior in the
amateur radio community.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-03 Thread Ian Kahn
Wayne,

I completely understand the challenges with getting the kit version ready.
I don't have a prepaid order and am perfectly willing to wait (although,
admittedly, with baited breath :-) ) for the Elecraft team to be able to
get all the pieces and parts of the kits ready to go, safely and
efficiently.

I am just curious about the estimated cost difference between the factory
version and the kits. I want to start putting aside my pennies now, and
want to have a somewhat reasonable target.

I hope for everyone on the Elecraft team to be and stay safe, both from
COVID and the fires.

Re: [Elecraft] No Tx audio after WSJT upgrade

Joe,

Check your WSJT-X settings and ensure you still have the correct sound

Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants

2020-08-23 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C
While I enjoyed the Virtual Ham Expo, there were some aspects I thought
could be improved. I sent this feedback to Eric Guth via the feedback
survey I received not long after the Expo closed.

 * Like everyone else who has responded so far, I enjoyed Eric's demo
of the K4. I am eagerly awaiting the availability of the K4 kits so
I can order and build mine. I'm even getting my work area prepared
already, for something I know is still probably 6-8 months out.
 * I really liked Wayne's presentation on the architecture of the KX3.
It was really neat to have the chief designer of the product show
us, component-by-component, how it was designed.
 * The gamification of the door prizes needs to go away. As has been
said here before, and I'm sure to Eric G., ad nauseum - it penalizes
those who actually want to enjoy the presentations and those who
can't spend all 48 hours of the Expo going to the vendors' booths
and the on-line lounge. And, it only encourages bad behavior, as the
   Expo organizers quickly discovered.
 * Users should be able to enter the presentations a few minutes early.
By only allowing us to enter at the exact moment the forum started,
it was possible to miss part of the presentation due to latency or
   other technical issues.
 * Since all the initial presentations were prerecorded, they should be
available for viewing any time after the initial presentation is
given. Nobody is good enough to be in multiple places at once, even
virtually. And, some very good presentations overlapped with each other.
 * Check the videos for quality well before the Expo begins. I attended
the Carole Perry Youth Forum, because two of the presenters belong
to my radio club. Carole's intro was well worth the time, but she
was so animated in her speaking style that her web cam kept trying
to refocus. I was getting motion sick from it.
 * The vendor area should be more than just links to the vendors' web
sites. If that's all you're giving me, aside from the chat, why
should I bother using the vendor area? I can just go to the web
   sites myself.
 * The vendor area needs to be easier to navigate. The button to exit
each booth to the "hallway" outside the booth was not prominent
enough. I didn't even know it was there until the end of the day
Saturday. I kept ending up back at the "front door" to the vendor arena.

All this being said, I think it was a good first run for a new concept
in hamfests. The presentations I did attend were informative, even if
some of the videos weren't of the highest quality. This may be a good
option to add to traditional hamfests, when the pandemic clears and we
can go back to doing things in person. I don't see this as a replacement
for traditional hamfests, but it would be nice if I could see one or two
forums from Dayton, say, even if I don't have the money or time to go to
Ohio for the fun and games myself.

Hi all,

I'd like to write up a summary of the recent [virtual] Ham Expo, especially for
the benefit of those who weren't able to make it. Perhaps they'll get a chance

overall.

It was, shall we say, unique...I'd love to hear about your experiences, good,
bad, or in-between. Ideas for future expos are also welcome, whether
Elecraft-specific or applicable to the event as a whole.

This feedback will also be invaluable for the team that put on the expo,

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] contest ranking - is this a scam?

2020-08-14 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

All,

I received the same email several weeks ago. I followed up by Googling
the organization and checking out their web site (using a Linux system I
didn't care if I had to nuke when done). They are a fairly new group,
established within the last year(if I remember correctly). I don't know
that they're a scam, but they really need to do something to build up
their cred if they want to be accepted by the global ham community.

Matt,

I would think so, too. However, a lot of the comments seen on this
reflector talk about how similar they are, and that if a user is familiar
with a K3/K3S, s/he will have no problem with the K4. So, at the risk of
looking foolish, I pose the question. No harm in asking. However, I would
like a definitive answer from either Eric/Wayne, or someone from the test
team.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S dead after attempted firmware update - Fixed

2020-06-07 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C
Actually, this is one of the worst ways Microsoft could handle updates.
I work in information security for a hospital. I shudder to think what
would happen if patching reset our life-saving critical clinical systems
to all the default settings every month. Our infrastructure team would
spend all their time putting out fires.

While the impact for end-users isn't as life-or-death, it is still
unreasonable to think that every time our systems get patched/updated,
we have to reconfigure them. This is amplified by the fact that
Microsoft no longer gives the home user any advance notice of when their
system will be patched, nor way to disable automated patching.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S dead after attempted firmware update - Fixed

2020-06-07 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Ray,

By any chance did your first computer receive any updates from Microsoft
recently? MS updates are well-known to completely bugger custom
settings, including COM port settings.

Just a thought.

Hi Buck

What did I do to fix it?

Well I left the K3S disconnected for an hour or so while I read the "trouble
shooting" sections in the owners manuals. I decided to change the power
supply & use a different PC & a different USB cable.

To my surprise the K3S then started normally & with the new PC I was able to
download a new copy of the Utility program & the latest firmware. This
connected immediately to the K3S.

So, what was wrong & why did it not work before?

I have absolutely no idea!

Re: [Elecraft] k3 no control

2020-05-27 Thread Ian Kahn
Joe,

The Prolific chip set has a long history of issues. It goes back to when
the Chinese started making knock-offs of them, and pirating the drivers.
You probably got a bad driver set in your download. As Don said, get rid of
that cable. Get one with an FTDI chip set in it. The Elecraft KUSB cable is
very high quality and very reliable. You won't regret the investment.

Re: [Elecraft] Availability

2020-05-16 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Tommy,

Please understand something about the K4 and availability - this is a
rig that was announced this time last year (at Dayton Hamvention), that
was still under design and development. At that time, I believe they
anticipated the ship date to be in time for the 2019 holidays. Then, the
testers found some things that needed correcting, which pushed the ship
date out a couple of months. Then, COVID-19 hit, we all went into
shelter-in-place, Elecraft had issues getting parts, and the work slowed
down. And Eric and Wayne have been up front about explaining all this to
us. But, the key here is that this transceiver is ground-breaking new
technology. It is a brand-new product still under development, a process
that was delayed largely due to world events beyond anyone's control.

There were similar delays (save for the global pandemic :-) ) and
similar complaints when the KX3 was released several years ago. A new
product will not always meet the time lines the developers initially
anticipate and announce. But, Eric and Wayne have said repeatedly in
this forum, and in the newsletter, that they have product in their other
lines available to ship. If you are concerned about your order, please
email sa...@elecraft.com. The wonderful sales team will tell you what's
in stock and what isn't. While I haven't ordered anything during the
current pandemic, I have never had a problem with product I ordered
being out of stock or back-ordered.

But, the long and the short here is that I wouldn't be concerned about
product availability. Pay attention to the K4 conversation, but take it
with a grain of salt, especially in these unique times.

As someone else posted here earlier, I'm waiting for the K4 kit to come
out before I order mine (probably a K4-HD). I also know it will probably
be at least another year before the kit versions become available. But,
I can wait. In the meantime, I finally have some time to really get to
know the KX2 I've had for nearly 18 months, and I will continue enjoying
my K3-based K-Line (K3, P3, KAT500, KPA500).

Good Morning

I’ve been studying how to establish a ham station and asking around what is
available to do that with these days. A month or so of research brought me to
Elecraft - best bang for the buck receivers. This narrowed my search down to
just a couple radios. Now thank you to this forum's members I’ve decided what
Elecraft has listed for sale I would like to use in a newly established ham
station.

I sent a wish list to Elecraft to see what is actually in stock knowing the
present pandemic could cause shortages of supplies and labor because of the
social distancing requirements.

Now I read on this forum many questions about when customers will actually
receive the radios they plunked down $4K to buy when first announced some time
ago. One customer mentioned that he was in an older age bracket and wondered
if he’d get his in time to use it - I’m five years older than what he said was
his age.

I’m wondering if I should consider another company’s products - find a company
if any that might have equipment in stock.

To end on a good note I need to say there has been plenty of time to leisurely
accumulate parts and design and erect a by the book optimum height inverted V
antenna out in my several acre front yard. All needed now is to hook a radio
onto the lead running down the pole and to under a small tree that will shade
me and a radio relaxed in a lawn chair.

Guess where I will not develop as much anxiety as others over delayed shipment
of equipment is because I did not send money with my wish list - or maybe I
should to actually get my name on the list to get my choice of equipment?

Any thoughts ?

Thank you Tommy Judson

Re: [Elecraft] Some K4 updates from the engineering department

2020-04-20 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Wayne,

Thank you for this update. I am eagerly awaiting information on the K4
kits and when they will be available (I know, not for a while yet ;-)).

My only regret with my K3, s/n 261, is that I bought it, and its
accompanying P3, used. Consequently, I didn't get the joy of building
them myself. I built my KPA500 and KAT500. Aside from dropping the tiny
fasteners into the deep pile carpet in the dining room, I loved every
minute of it. I've thoroughly enjoyed my K-Line, and look forward to
upgrading to the K4 (and maybe the KPA1500, if the funds hold out).

Greetings from locked-down California I hope everyone, near and far, is

I thought I'd take a break from playing with the K4 and tweaking firmware to
give everyone a status report from the engineering side. (Eric has been keeping
everyone informed about how Elecraft has been affected by the pandemic more
generally.)

These musings are in no particular order. I hope they help satisfy those who
recently posted with questions, info-cravings, etc.

* * *

Reference Oscillator

The K4 includes a stable internal TXCO, standard, as well as the ability to
lock to an external 10 MHz reference. We just completed a round of testing on
this feature.

The internal TCXO is accurate to within +/- .28 ppm with no calibration and no
external reference connected. There's a menu entry for dialing this in as tight
as +/- .02 PPM (+/- 1 Hz at 50 MHz). Connecting an external reference will hold
it even closer, and of course keep it there over an even wider temperature
range.

Panadapter Controls

Thanks to the efforts of our [working-at-home] software team, the panadapter
controls just keep getting better. When you tap DISPLAY, you're presented with
14 easy to use display functions. But we took things a step further by allowing
you to specify whether to adjust the current parameter on LCD, EXT, or both
(when an external monitor is attached), and on main, sub, or both (when in
dual-display mode). You can independently specify single or dual-pan for LCD
and external monitor. For example, you could have dual-Pan on a large HDMI
monitor, while setting the LCD to monitor just main or sub RX.

Stereo Audio

Receive audio provides independent left and right channels for both headphones and
external speakers. When used in single-receive mode, this allows you to use simulated
stereo or "pitch mapping"-- both very effective at relieving listening fatigue.
I've been using this a lot in DXing and QRP work. Full stereo also comes into play in
diversity mode, when listening to pileups, or just monitoring two separate bands. Even
with a basic K4, the two receivers can be set to any two bands, and you can operate
cross-band split. The K4D adds a second set of band-pass filters and a second A-to-D
converter to greatly improve out-of-band rejection when monitoring different bands.

Receive Antenna Controls

We recently made some improvements in this area. In addition to main RX ant and sub RX ant
selection switches, there are now separate icons showing which antennas are in use: one for main
RX, one for sub RX, and one for TX antenna. Main and sub receivers default to the TX antenna, but
you can select any of the antenna jacks for assignment to each receiver independently. This updates
the icons accordingly. You can also assign names to antenna ports using a pop-up alphanumeric
keyboard. On my K4, I have names for the three antennas connected to my KAT4 ATU, as well as
"SIG GEN" for the RX ANT IN 1 jack and "LOOP" for RX ANT IN 2.

RF Gain Controls

The ATTN switch brings up a selection tool that allows you to turn the
attenuator on/off and select attenuation from 0 to 21 dB in 3-dB steps. (As
with all receive and transmit controls, these settings are stored per-band and
per-receiver.) You can also dial in per-receiver RF GAIN (0 to -60 dB, with
digital readout) and preamp setting (off/pre1/pre2). All gain settings are now
taken into account when calculating S-meter and panadapter reference levels.

Miscellaneous Controls

Compared the the K3S, the K4 has numerous additional controls, resulting in a lot
less use of the menu. Each receiver has a collection of per-mode settings (tap MAIN
RX or SUB RX, respectively), as does the transmitter (tap the TX button). There are
dedicated switches for TUNE LP (user-specified low-power TUNE setting), REM ANT (for
future control of remote antenna switches, rotators, etc.), VFO B>A (in addition
to the usual A>B), AUTO spot (in addition to SPOT), PF1-PF4 (plus another 14 user
functions, Fn 1-14, via a touch function), and a separate audio BALance knob
function, the behavior of which could be adapted to various operator needs in the
future.

Touch Controls

We're sure you'll find, as we have, that the K4's touch screen interface is
fast and convenient to use. To capitalize on this, we've been adding new touch
features. To

Re: [Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders

2019-10-20 Thread Ian Kahn
I advise using caution with any Internet-over-power line solutions. Several
years ago there were companies that tried implementing Internet-over-power
line solutions, especially in Texas. Hams fought them tooth and nail (and
won) because these solutions caused so much RFI they left ham radio useless.

Just my two cents' worth. Good luck finding a solution to your challenge.

Go to groups.io. Search for "KX". Select the group that is the Elecraft KX

join the group. It's that easy. I did it last night and was approved and

Re: [Elecraft] Windows update clobbered me

2019-07-20 Thread Ian Kahn
Dave,

A couple of quick thoughts:

1. Have you rebooted a couple of times? Despite what Microsoft may claim
about reboots being (un)necessary, you should always reboot a couple of
times after an update/upgrade.

2. Have you unplugged/plugged all your physical USB cables? That
accomplishes a couple of things - lets Windows redetect your devices, lets
drivers get reinstalled (if necessary).

3. If #2 doesn't work, try reinstalling drivers for both your physical
devices and your virtual COM ports. Windows has a nasty habit of ignoring
vendor-supplied drivers for its own drivers, which often don't work as well
as the vendor's.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.

2019-06-04 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Gene,

I've had a lot of fun on vacations with my KX2 and a BuddiStick by
BuddiPole:

http://www.buddipole.com/

The price, for the Deluxe kit, is probably comparable to what you'd pay
for an AlexLoop. I just clamp mine to the arm of the chair, the table,
whatever, with the included clamp, string out the included radial, and
have fun. It tunes great with the combination of tapped loading coil and
the built-in tuner on my KX2. I also have the tripod BuddiPole sells,
but don't like it as much as the clamp. It's a very small tripod, and
the way the antenna and mount plate are designed, it is very easy to get
heavy to one side and tip the antenna over.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] portable antennas and rigs going through airport security

2019-06-03 Thread Ian Kahn
Dave,

I used to take an FT-817 and wire antenna through airport security (TSA)
when I travelled for work. Never had an issue. Put it in your carry-on, and
let TSA inspect it if they check your bags. You may actually want to leave
the battery in, in case they ask you to turn on your rig.

Ralph,

If I may suggest, download and read the manual from the Elecraft web
site, if you haven't already. Also, get a copy of Fred Cady's, K7EX,
excellent book on the K3. It will help you understand the ins and outs
of your transceiver.

Also, the two pre-amps are new to the K3S, if I remember correctly. Our
older-generation K3s don't have them.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S quit sending RTTY via AFSK

2018-01-26 Thread Ian Kahn
Dick,

You may actually find the answer you're looking for in the N1MM Logger+
documentaation. It has a section on configuring for the K3/K3S.

73, and good luck,

I had to download the latest K3S firmware to resolve some other issues.
Now the K3S will only transmit RTTY in DATA A mode and not AFSK A mode so
I'm thinking perhaps a Config setting is wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S and N1MM+ Logger question

2018-01-13 Thread Ian Kahn
Chuck,

Record your audio files as .WAV files. There is extensive documentation on
the N1MM Logger+ Web site, in the documentation section, on where to place
the audio files in the N1MM Logger+ directories, how to edit the
configuration file for its voice keyer function, and how to configure the
logger and the K3S so they all work properly. I had my K3 set up per these
instructions for a couple of years, and it worked very well. Then, last
year, I finally got the K3DVR board.

Good luck!

Does being packed in all those static-charged peanuts represent a danger to

Ian,

Can you receive any station at a known frequency. Here in the US it is easy to
use WWV, but other standard frequency stations exist around the world.

Tune to the standard frequency station and do the Reference Oscillator
Calibration. K3 manual page 50. Use Method 2.

I cannot guarantee it will fix the problem, but it is the first thing to try.

Ron/All,

As I state in my original email, I don't have this issue on any other band.
The first couple of times other ops reported me off frequency a bit, I
thought the issue to be as you suggest - differences in how different ops
hear the signal, a 1-2 Hz difference, etc. However, EVERY operator I tried
to contact reported the same thing - that I am off frequency by about 500
Hz, that I need to adjust my RIT (which is not enabled), etc. That's why I'm
concerned about a possible issue. I was also using my P3 to tune to signals,
so I feel fairly certain that I was, in fact, on frequency as my receiver
saw it.

Have you experienced this on other bands, during casual operating since the
rig was returned to you?

I find that when I am on SSB, I tune until my ear may likes what I am
hearing , and as such, I may not be exactly on their frequency. (that
is one reason for RIT!) Also, I have found that some ops feel that they
have to be tuned to an even frequency on their digital display. For
them, if you are on 14.219.8 and not on 14.220.0 then you are off
frequency.

[Elecraft] 6m off-frequency

2017-06-11 Thread Ian Kahn
All,

I've been operating a little in the ARRL VHF contest this weekend, on 6m,
and I'm having an interesting, and not good, experience. Everyone I try to
work is reporting that I'm off frequency by about 500 Hz. I don't have
RIT/XIT enabled. My K3, s/n 281, went to Elecraft earlier this year for
some upgrades and a tune-up, and came back with a clean bill of health and
meets/exceeds specs.

I admit, I am new to 6m operation, but this constant report of being
off-frequency concerns me. Is there some calibration step, specific to 6m,
that I missed? I don't get this report on any other band, and have never
gotten it in over 6 years of operating this rig. My assumption is that if
it came back from the Mother Ship clean, and I've never used 6m before,
that it should be properly calibrated.

Any guidance/advice is greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] [OT] A Podcast Star is Born, or My 30 Seconds of Fame

2017-05-04 Thread Ian Kahn
All,

Good morning. I had the great pleasure, earlier this week, of being a guest
on the Everything Ham Radio podcast. I shared my knowledge (I am very
hesitant to use the work "expertise") on PSK31 with podcast host Curtis,
K5CLM. The podcast is now available, and I encourage everyone to give it a
listen at:

<http://www.everythinghamradio.com/podcast/67>

As a sidebar, if you ever have the opportunity to be on a podcast, give it
a shot. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to fill 45 minutes to an hour
on PSK31, and was pleasantly surprised when Curtis told me we filled 90
minutes, and I probably could have kept going (big surprise, I know! :-)
). Recording the podcast was no different than having a phone conversation
with an old friend, talking about topics we both enjoy. I had a great time,
and hopefully made a new friend in Curtis Mohr, K5CLM, the podcast's host.

[Elecraft] Elecraft web site down?

2017-04-28 Thread Ian Kahn
Is anyone else having issues getting to the Elecraft web site? I've been
trying for about five minutes, from my home QTH in Roswell, GA, and I keep
getting "www.elecraft.com is taking too long to respond" errors. Are they
down, or did their hosting provider update their IP address/DNS settings
again, and not tell anyone? I tried flushing my DNS cache on my system,
hoping I just have stale DNS entries, but that didn't help this time.

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] [OT] GA QSO Party This Weekend

2017-04-07 Thread Ian Kahn
All,

Thank you for allowing an off-topic use of bandwidth. This weekend is the
56th Georgia QSO Party. The contest runs 1800 UTC Saturday - 0400 UTC
Sunday, and again 1400 UTC Sunday - 2359 UTC Sunday, on your favorite HF
bands. Contacts with all 159 Georgia counties will be available, and the
contest has categories for both CW/digital and SSB contacts, or a mix of
both. I'll be on the air as KM4IK from my home QTH in Fulton County,
working 15m, 20m, 40m, and 80m, as conditions allow, in the SSB portions of
the bands. I hope to work everyone this weekend!

Re: [Elecraft] K3- padded carrying case

Dick,

I've heard mention several times on this reflector of people using various
sizes of Pelican case. They are tough, air- and water-tight, well-padded,
and they make sizes that meet FAA carry-on guidelines.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S and HRD

2016-08-29 Thread Ian Kahn
In the HRD Rig Control application, try Customize -> Meters. However, if
the K3S doesn't support displaying the meter externally, HRD can't display
It. I tried on my K3 s/n 281 and, despite selecting the options for ALC and
PWR, they weren't displayed, which leads me to believe the K3/S doesn't
support that particular capability. Perhaps someone more intimately
familiar with the firmware can chime in and provide more detail.

Barely dare ask, but is there a logging program suited for VHF logging?
My logs are simply excel spreadsheets and cover:
No. MO/DY/YR TIME CALLSIGN GRID LOCATION DXCC WAS FREQ MODE QSL-RX
QSL-SENT Last two columns track QSLs received "X" or sent "MO/DA/YR"

Especially would be nice to determine with callsign entry if I had worked
the station, previously. MY log is an initial contact log and I do not
enter repeat contacts. Present use is all manual entry and search. Grid
is six digit locator. e.g. on 2m-eme I have 438 initial contacts (distinct
callsigns).

So far I run contests on paper with pencil. Eme and VHF contests normally
are not so fast and furious as on HF.
But a log that saves frequency, mode and date info while one enters time
and call would be nice on contests, especially if it would detect a dupe.
Be most handy tallying score and entering contest log. Cabrillo
conversion would be nice for contests.

I keep separate logs by band (only logging 6m+ contacts)

Re: [Elecraft] Logging Programs

2016-02-26 Thread Ian Kahn
Terry,

I've used Ham Radio Deluxe for years and am quite happy with it. It has
most of the features you're looking for (I'm not aware of customizable
forms, but fields can be added/removed/moved in the logger), plus
outstanding rig control, digital mode software in DM780, satellite tracking
(if you ever go that route), and more.

In the interest of full disclosure, I don't have a financial interest in
HRD, but I am one of their evangelists in the Metro Atlanta area. Let me
know if you have any specific questions (off-list, please) and I'll be
happy to answer as best I can.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #281 Perceived Output Issue

2016-02-23 Thread Ian Kahn
Several people offered some very good suggestions and asked several valid
questions about my testing. Here are answers to many of those questions:

1. The meter I'm using in the test is a known-good MFJ-815B HF power/SWR
meter.
2. I'm using a known-good 300W dummy load for my "antenna", so any
reflected power is minimal, as is SWR.
3. I do have the internal ATU installed, but it is in BYPASS, as I have a
resonant antenna on 20m-10m and use the KAT500 for 40m/80m, or when I run
power.
4. Test results at lower power levels:

10m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 19-20w on meter; 50w out - ~30w on
meter
12m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 30w on meter
15m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 35w on meter
17m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 35w on meter
20m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 40w on meter
40m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 40w on meter
80m 10w out - 10w on meter; 25w out - 20w on meter; 50w out - 40w on meter

I also ran the TX Gain Calibration from the K3 utility one more time, with
a different cable. Here are the results of that calibration (note - I
didn't run the milliwatt calibration because I don't use a transverter with
the IF Out. It just goes to my P3):

K3 Tx Gain Calibration data written on 2016-02-23 at 22:18:30

After running the TX Gain Calibration again, I checked the above output
numbers, and they stay the same. It seems as if I am losing about 20% of my
output power for any setting above 10w, except on 10m, where at 100w I seem
to be losing about 50w. It also seems as if maybe there is an issue with
the internal 100w PA, based strictly on my observations and a wild guess.
If there are any other suggestions/recommendations, I'm all ears. If not,
the next step is an email to the good folks in Aptos.

Thanks and 73,

Reposting, since this didn't seem to get out when I originally sent it last
Friday evening. If you get this a second time, please forgive the noise.

Subject: [Elecraft][K3] K3 #281 Perceived Output Issue
To: "elecraft@mailman.qth.net" <elecraft@mailman.qth.net>

All,

I have what I think is an output issue with my K3 s/n 281. When set at 100W
output, I am getting the following approximate output values:

10m ~55w
12m ~40w
15m ~50w
17m ~60w
20m ~60w
40m ~70w
80m ~70w
160m~70w

My testing methodology involved connecting the short (~12") coax out of
ANT1 to an HF power meter's input. I then connected the power meter's
output to a 300w dummy load. I then tuned to the band to test, put the rig
in CW mode, and keyed down for a few seconds. The power meter is set to
read peak output, not average output. As a self-check, I would randomly run
the test using AFSK-A RTTY, just as a double-check to ensure I was getting
100% duty cycle. The results are the same.

After discovering these power output values, I ran the TX Gain Calibration
via the K3 utility. It ran through the 5w and 50w calibration tests
successfully. After running the TX Gain Calibration, my output power
readings didn't change significantly. My readings then are:

10m ~50w
12m ~60w
15m ~50w
17m ~60w
20m ~60w
40m ~70w
80m ~70w
160m~70w

Is there something else I should check before I plan a call back to the
Elecraft mother ship next week? If it needs to go home for repair and
testing, it will have to wait until after the Georgia QSO Party the second
weekend in April. I'm getting good signal reports when I'm on the air, but
it seems odd to me that, with the rig set for 100w out, and in a full duty
cycle mode, I'm only getting 50%-70% of my rated power.

Thank and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] OT: CW Contest logging question

2016-02-21 Thread Ian Kahn
I don't test CW, just SSB, but I've had logs rejected for logging the cut
numbers instead of actual numbers for the power levels. I'd convert them.

Hope this helps.

Good luck in the test!
