[Elecraft] Dayton
I'm looking into actually attending Dayton for the first time ever. Will there be many folks from the reflector there this year? 73, Julius n2wn Julius, you have no idea! Look for a crowd. There usually is a fairly decent size crowd around the Elecraft booth. In addition to Eric and Wayne, Don, W3FPR, the grand poobah of remote troubleshooting and Elmering is usually there. There is on going development in the ham radio circles with Software Defined Radios, or SDR. Look at this web site for a $ 28.00 kit you can build: http://www.hamsdr.com/login.aspx (create a new user with the new user button below) Some pictures of one built: http://www.tracey.org/wjt/sdr1k/SoftRock40/SRV5-pics/ These little boards give you a 40 or 20 meter receiver, with a moderate bandwidth (depending on your sound card). I use an external M-Audio Transit, which has 96 kHz sampling, and plugs in via the USB. My thought on this little unit is to get a crystal for 4.915 MHz, and tap the IF of the K2, and then monitor the bandscope on the computer. I just haven't gotten time to modify one of the two units I ordered. I was rather stunned when my wife and I walked in the Holland, MI club meeting last Tuesday night, and fellow K2'r Dave, WD8PUO had brought his $ 28 SDR kit to the club for a show and tell. Is any one else on the list experimenting with this SDR as a bandscope for the K2? B. Hard-wire control from point to point C. A telephone link via an unlisted telephone number because this rule is based in LAW, not OPINION.. Come on folks., This is indeed a case of interpretation. Almost 75% of the FCC rules are. Take # C above. If I am using a Voip phone, and the remote site has an unlisted telephone number (routed as an unlisted IP address, and unlisted port#), I'm now using the Internet, and yet I satisfy # C. How much simpler can that be? And as far as it NOT being a point to point, when you dial up your SBC landline link, you are being routed by a computer that is looking for the lowest cost way to get you to your destination. That could be California for a Michigan to Wisconsin link. As with everything in life, it is open to interpretation. I'm working on my remote base, and when it's done, I'll let you turn me into the FCC. It is a classic case of the FCC rules not keeping up with technology. Re: [Elecraft] Transverters
If only I could rig up a pan adapter for the K2, I'd use that as an IF rig instead of the Kenwood 850. Raj, As an alternative, N4PY's software control program has a bandscan function, that when you press it, it takes over the K2 for about 10 seconds, and scans the bandwidth you want, and shows the display on a quasi-spectrum analyzer screen shot. Works very well. http://www.ralabs.com/n4py/ Also, on six meters, I have an older Icom 551D. The receiver blows wind, but it transmits OK. Receive audio is just oh so bad! In looking at the Icom diagram, the IF shift uses a 10.xx MHz IF. Hmm. So I tapped that feed, and ran that to my K2, which picked up the IF signal on the 10 MHz band. Now I have the clean K2 receive audio. Basically, I tune with the Icom, and transmit with it, but receive on the K2. Kinda weird, but it works. I'm saving up the nickels to buy another K2 ( so I can be on six and the low bands at the same time), and of course a Elecraft six meter transverter. And for Elecrafts next item: Oh would I like a box that taps the K2 IF, and is a spectrum analyzer. The output would be VGA, to plug into your monitor, or USB/UTP connection. That UTP connection would also tie into the K2 rs-232 for control across any network. [Elecraft] A small FD experience
I was still on the road Saturday with my wife on a swing around Michigan ( upper and lower peninsula's) vacation. So I could not really get involved with any FD. But, Saturday afternoon found us at Oscoda, Michigan, where there was an Arts's n Craft show. Ya, that thrills me. But I have this great arrangement with my wife, who can take as long as she wants. I always bring plenty of reading material, or do that best in show thing called a nap. So I'm parked in this nice lot, with plenty of tree shade. I look up at the trees, and there is some really scary AC wiring going on. No way to throw any wire up there. So I take some 20 feet of 22 gauge wire, and lay it out, ON THE GROUND!. With the help of a few alligator clips, I convinced the K2 internal tuner to load up on 40cw at 10 watts. From the front seat of my car, I worked some 8 stations in 15 minutes! Never more than two calls. 10 watts into 20 feet of wire on the ground! I was tuning around, and just started to laugh at the whole situation when my wife came back. She asked me what was so funny. Kinda hard to explain, but since she was the one who bought the K2 for me as a consolation prize for turning 50, she was very happy to see that silly look on my face. She told me today I had that look all day.
