As a K2 only owner I appreciate when the posters reference the equipment
they are posting about in the subject line (e.g. "K3"). This helps with
auto sorting.

This reflector has helped me on several occasions. Most recently I got Don
Wilhelm's (W3FPR) name as a possible repair person. I had an incomplete K2 (2
years uncompleted) which he completed, tested, and aligned at a cost which I
consider quite good and in a speedy manner.

I finally got some ham friends to help install a vertical antenna (I'm in a
wheelchair) and am now beginning to learn how to use the K2.

My thanks to Don and others on this list who have offered help and advise with
problems as they occurred.

Try your local office supply store, like Staples. They have the ability
to create spiral-bound manuals. They could probably disassemble your
manual, laminate and re-punch the cover, and assemble it again. I had
some similar work done and it was surprisingly cheap.

[Elecraft] OT K2 speech compressor

2008-01-22 Thread David Cutter
I would like to use an analogue speech compressor like the one in the K2
SSM2165 but I see it is now obsolete. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

In amateur applications of modest compression, is there much difference between
the -1 and -2 types? I'm told a few of the lower gain versions are still
about.

Thanks for your time.

[Elecraft] OT - K2 Keyer problems

2007-12-20 Thread Kevin Rock
Recently I had my K2 (#2511) upgraded with the A to B mod kits. I have had
some odd experiences with it since then.

When I get up each morning I need to stoke the fire to warm the house up.
Sometimes the morning temperature is in the high 40s (F). Normally it is in
the low 50s range. Not long after breakfast, both mine and Sam's, I am on the
air working into Oklahoma. The shack temperature today was 55 when I started.
My keyer was set at 23 wpm but the speed kept jumping all over the place. The
display would show the new speed but only after I had flubbed a few characters
due to the speed change. It would drop to 19 or jump to 28 wpm randomly. By
the end of the contact (60 minutes) the shack temperature had risen to 58 and
the variations had lessened somewhat but they were still occurring.

Do you, or anyone else, know what may cause these random speed variations? Is
it the new firmware, the temperature, or some random thing? 2.04P 1.09 is the
reading at start up to give you some idea of the firmware version.

Before the upgrade it would jump very rarely. Now it jumps more often.
However, due to the change in seasons the rig is going through larger
temperature cycles than it had been. I am nowhere near the wood stove so it
does get pretty chilly back here. Once I take down my Christmas tree I'll move
back up into the front room but for now I need some way to limit the speed
cycling. Should I turn the rig on an hour before I get on the air to help it
stabilize? Cover it with a tea cozy? Put a space heater under it? Take down
the tree and move near the wood stove? Or could it be something which changed
with the upgrade?
Any advice would be kindly appreciated,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] K2 Navigator Interface

2007-11-07 Thread Stan Rife
I made my own cable. I used the 1/8 stereo plug for the RCV audio, and I
believe I use a 1/8 mono for the TX audio because I have one of the Heil
microphone adapter cables that breaks out the Keying and TX audio ckts to
seperate 1/4 1/8 jacks accordingly. Made it pretty simple versus having to
wire up a mic plug and switch that out all the time. I use a series of 1/8
1/4 (RadioShack) Y adapter cables and have my Heil headset hooked up all the
time as well as the audio cables from the Navigator. Actually I have to disco
the TX audio plug from the headset to eliminate the open microphone on TX while
using the Navigator.

I used stereo and mono cables from Radio shack that were already made up. I
just cut them in half and used which ever half had the right connector on it
and soldered them all in to a DB25 male connector. Turned out kind of
professional looking. That is probably the expensive route to go, but it still
didn't cost the 48 bucks that US Interface wants for a made up cable. Since I
was using the Heil microphone adapter cable, I would have had to modify their
cable anyway.

That's useful, Simon. I've had a few direct replies about the serial
cable wiring but what about the audio connections? Would standard
3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo jack cables suffice? Is any resistive attenuator
needed, such as I've used in the home made cables for most other
  radios?
