I did that for a folding solar panel I purchased that put out 18V. A couple

but fine for receive (or charging the batteries).

John,
I would suggest that you put a diode in series with that supply - rated
at 5 amps. That will reduce the voltage by the amount of the diode drop.
Running the KX3 (or any other device) above the specified maximum
voltage is done at your own peril - it may work, but it taxes the

The PAE power supply works fine, but it still puts out enough hash that I
can't use my loop antenna near it. It is better than others? Probably, but
still not usable for me when near the receiving antenna.

John,
I do have a horse in this race (the Kx33), but I will tell you that in
testing many supplies I have seen that many of them have poor
regulation. Some show as much as 25% peak over-voltage which you would

The KX3 will shut down if the voltage is too high.

I'd look to reduce the voltage about half a bolt before I'd use it with a KX3.

And you could always put together a little inline circuit to drop the

I’m not an expert on this, but from what I’ve observed is that some of these DC

Has anyone tried a 12v brick like most laptops use for their KX3?

I just looked at four bricks floating around my office, and two of them
are 12v. The other two are 18v and 19v.
The smallest one I have is 2a, which would probably charge the internal
KX3 batteries. The bigger one might be okay for transmitting.
That's why I specified 12v brick in my post.
Lynn,
You really should use 13.8 volts or higher if you can. It will result
in a cleaner signal (lower IMD).
If you are using a supply with less than that voltage, it is wise to
back down on the power a bit.

I have run across some at lower voltages. Look around. I have checked some to
make sure they didn’t rise too high under no load and for RFI. A number seem
pretty good. These were all older ones.

Be cautious with wall wart supplies with the KX3. Many are not

other receivers, but the KX3 with its 'direct to baseband' architecture
is quite susceptible to that kind of power supply interference. You

Another suggestion is the Gamma Research HPS-1a, which has a very small
footprint and will power a 100 watt radio. So if you get an amp you will be
covered. I have the HPS-1a and it powers my K3 just fine and is easy to
transport for portable operation.
I got a lucky find: searched some old laptop computer power supplies in the
bins at Halted Electronics, a surplus store, and found a 15V power supply that
was a good match. Anything from 12V to 15V should work. It is very small and
fits in well with the KX3.
