Wow!  I supported myself in college working at the local [only] TV station, KSBY, in the late 50's/early 60's.  The CE worked my shifts around classes, and I often did the 1630-signoff.  Jack Parr had what would become Johnny's slot then with that classic RCA on his desk.  I thought it was a

Hi Fred -- It depends on what time you are talking about.   Some sources document Carson using an RCA Type 77 DX ribbon mic in the NY shows.   Later, Johnny Carson used a Shure Model 33 desk mounted ribbon microphone - Carson switched from a RCA ribbon mic to this Shure style in the late

I agree with Fred (Skip)- electret mic elements are hard to beat, especially with Elecraft rigs or others which have frequency compensation.  The electret elements are small and inexpensive.  With their flat responses, they will need some equalization for use as ham mics - reduced low

"It would be great if these elements could be modified to perform better" Au contraire, Tony.  They were designed for a particular purpose and they perform very well for that purpose.  Unfortunately, that purpose is just not normally found in ham radio. It is very hard to beat electret mics.
