One hack to avoid damage to the radio from transmitting when
there is no antenna attached is to run with power settings by
band and set the power for that HF band to zero.

Re: [Elecraft] status of bugs on existing Elecraft models?

2021-03-01 Thread Geert Jan de Groot
Apologies for resend; used wrong email address for sending to list and
was rejected, but I want my bugs fixed ;-)

This should be working and we should be responding. We?re looking

into it.

Meanwhile: what?s your question? I?m always available

May I use the query on KX3 transverter bugs to ask the status of bugs on
the K3/K3s?

Here, too, transverters give issues. I have configured a transverter
band (for oscar-100), and subsequently disabled the HF bands
(CONFIG:BAND MAP OFF for all the HF bands). Now, the K3 shows erratic
behavior: when on he transverter band, instead of the BAND buttons being
inactive, BAND UP switches to 80m (which was disabled), and BAND DOWN
switches to 20m (which was also disabled). Enabling any HF band makes
this problem go away, but this allows accidental transmitting on antenna
ports that are not connected.
This was reported several years ago, never solved.

Another issue is with the P3. One of the command keys, scroll lock, is
only available on a regular-size keyboard,, not on a compact keyboard.
And a compact keyboard saves a lot of real estate on the operating desk.
Defining an alternative keystroke would enable use of compact keyboards
and is a trivial change.

These problems were reported several years ago. I know the focus is on
the K4 but these issues should not be hard to fix, not even with Corona
restrictions...

Since the off topic posts seem to mostly come from the same culprits,
sorting by sender might be a good alternative.

The advertising slogan meant, "Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco."  But
during the Truman administration it came to mean "Leave Some Meat for

Uhh ... what was that you were saying about good memories?

In your defense, however, the internet is flooded with references to "Is
it real or is it Memorex?" as erroneously being the old slogan. Tons of

Yes, that was the line.  I thought something sounded off in what KD7YZ

2020-09-20 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I’m from Chicago, so seems like we got three or four at once. But I do remember
the first TV set, Dumont 12 inch round tube, 1948.
A friend of mine got a Halicrafters 5 inch or so near the same time, and an
antenna on a tower. Plus an oil filled thing to look through that made the
image bigger.
Remember those colored plastic things people put over the screen to add a bit
of color?

If it's not the same, I'm sorry - I haven't been following the remote stuff for

[Elecraft] Status update on the KX3

2012-03-27 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi all,

It's highly likely that we'll be shipping some KX3s by the end of this
week. We have all the parts and finished assemblies, and we're putting
things together and testing as we speak. With a complex new product it
takes time to work out the manufacturing and test issues, but our
throughput should increase rapidly.

Those who receive the first batch of KX3s should be aware of a few
things:

- Some firmware features are still being added or improved, and we
could be releasing new beta code as often as every few days. You can
load new code whenever you find it convenient.

- There are some last-minute hardware items that will be shipped after
the radio itself. This includes the battery charger (probably a few
weeks away). Any such items will be very easy to install.

- The printed owner's manual will initially be at revision A3. The
electronic version of the manual will be updated much more often,
including the errata sheet. Of course the electronic version is also
searchable.

- Because of last-minute changes, the first edition of the kit
assembly manual is probably out another week. We have to test the
assembly and configuration procedures to make sure everything is
working.

No doubt we've overlooked a few things in firmware or documentation.
We'll answer any questions as quickly as possible. But we're very much
looking forward to getting your KX3s shipped!

Wayne

Presumably that means that kit shipments won't start until a week or
so after assembled KX3s. Ah well, this is still good news. Thanks to

HI Jim,

Possibly at some point in the future, but not right now. We're consumed
just getting the regular KX3 production flow started.

It actually costs us more to special handle leaving out a manual from
standard production, due to the time for unique handling and additional
work order paperwork needed to keep everyhting straight in the
manufacturing and inventory processes.

My watching of serial numbers indicates very roughly 100 each of K1s and K2s
are being sold per year, and roughly 1000 K3s.

There are still many fans of the HW-8, and the K2 is 100 times better (while
the same size--coincidence?) I've seen unbuilt HW-8s go for $1000 on Ebay.
I'll bet the K2 is around for a very, very long time. It is unbeatable as a
portable rig imho and a blast to build.

Re: [Elecraft] Status of the K2 world

2010-08-01 Thread Doug Person
I'm on my third K2. On the previous two I felt I had drifted away
from radio and I sold them to reinvest the money into other things. On
my third, last year, I realized that if I do radio at all the only ones
to use were the K3 and the K2. I'll let everything else radio related
go, but these two are just keepers. Right now the K2 is sitting in the
living room connected to a Buddipole on the deck. Running 15 watts on 20.

To me, the K2 will be both historic and a classic. 20 years from now,
people will be looking back at the end of the last century at the K2
about the same way many of us who are older and licensed in the early
60's look upon the Drake TR-4c. I can't think of any transceiver that
was more popular or more desired by my ham radio peers than the TR-4c.
I can only hope that it is still in production. Or possibly and
hopefully moved on to the K2-A or K2-B. The concept of the radio is
unmatched anywhere else - a tiny, lightweight radio with performance
comparable to vastly more expensive products - and you build it yourself
from a kit. How cool is that?

Re: [Elecraft] Status of the K2 world

2010-07-31 Thread Peter Wollan
K2 users, support, and production are still going strong. But -- a
few months ago (I don't remember when), Wayne or Eric (I don't
remember which) described the K2 as a mature product. This means, I
think, that they would revise it if somebody found a problem
justifying a revision, but they don't expect that to happen, and they
aren't thinking of any other modules to introduce.

I think that's reasonable. The K2 is wonderful, but not perfect, and
some features aren't as elegant as they could be. I'd like to see a
new Elecraft product that aims to replace the K2 as the best QRP field
radio, but I think doing it better would require a new design,
probably based on digital technology like the K3.

Considering how busy they are with the K3 etc, a new design won't
happen soon, so I think it's safe to build another K2 now. They
aren't selling at the rate they did before the K3, but they're still
selling.

another K2, but am wondering if the K2 will be discontinued due to the
popularity of the K3. Can someone tell me if the K2 users, support, and
production are all still going strong? Are attempts still being made to
improve K2 if, or when the opportunity arises?
 Thanks for your input.

Re: [Elecraft] Status of the K2 world

2010-07-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tim,

I believe the K2 will be fully supported for some long time to come. It
is a mature product, and that means no new development work is likely.
I have heard nothing about any plans to discontinue any of the Elecraft
kits. I don't know how many are selling currently, but the serial
numbers I am aware of are nearing 7000.

Do you guys really expect to see one or both of these released at Visalia or
Dayton? Think about how much time and effort Wayne, Eric and Co. are still
putting in on the K3 and all of the wishes to make it a do everything just
the way I want it radio. Not to mention the on-going improvements they are
dealing with. Maybe they will announce a 32+ hour day to go along with new
product developement.  Keep it real...

[Elecraft] Status of KRX 3

2008-11-28 Thread Dick Grolleman
Hi All

As mentionted before I ordered my KRX3 and K3 on Feb 11th. My K3 serial number
is 1168. I was hooping to have the KRX3 for the upcoming CQWW contest. But so
far no word from elecraft yet. I did send an email yesterday, and a followup
mail today to elecraft, but no answer.
Anybody else ordered in Feb still waiting?

[Elecraft] Status of K3 Shipping??

2008-03-25 Thread Jim Harris
Hi,

At the chance of stirring the err of the fanatic faithful a question has become
obvious over the last few days. What is the status of K3 shipments? It has
been a week or more since there was a proclamation by anyone of receiving a K3
or having received notification of a pending shipment. Is all well in Aptos or
???

[Elecraft] Status report

2004-12-22 Thread George A. Thornton
Pleased to report that #04554 is going well.

I now have installed four options: KNB2, KDSP2, K160RX AND KSB2.

Everything went pretty smoothly. With the exception of the KSB2,
everything worked according to hoyle right off the bat. The KSB2 unit
would not communicate with the main processor. I went back and checked
and found I had forgotten to finish soldering in the P1 connector. I
had carefully rechecked the bottom of the board but forgot to go back
through the top.

A few dabs of solder on the remaining pins and # 04554 was off to the
races.

Next option to install is the 60 meter module. That does not look too
complicated.

I now have a question:

I plan to eventually go for the 100 watt option, but not right away.
Can you use the 100 watt antenna tuner in the QRP version or do you have
to have the 100 watt unit installed first?

.

Oh, ABSOLUTELY the KAT100 will function perfectly with the barefoot K2
regardless of whether the KPA100 is installed or not!

HOWEVER...!!! One minor problem, which CAN be overcome by just a bit of
novel wiring 'around' the problem.

The KAT100 depends upon access to the AUXBUS communications signal from the
K2 in order to communicate between the K2 and the KAT100. If the KPA100 was
installed, this AUXBUS signal would come via the serial communications
adapter which is part of the KPA100. If the KPA100 is not present, the
signal would then (normally) have to come via the KIO2 serial
communications adapter which also provides AUXBUS comms at its output.

The fact that you (at this time) have neither the KIO2 nor the KPA100 means
that the requisite AUXBUS signal communications are not present by default.

This CAN, and HAS been circumvented by some builders...! Go to:

 http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html#NOKIO2

This takes you to the web site of Lyle Johnson, KK7P, and the section
titled Update! 2002 November 14 - Using a KAT100 Remotely Without a KIO2.
This describes the 'novel wiring' I spoke about above for this minor(!) mod
which WILL allow you to use the KAT100 without having installed either the
KIO2 or the KPA100 first.

The parts required for this, I believe, can be obtained directly from
[EMAIL PROTECTED], OR they can be obtained from Mouser or DigiKey as well.
If you order from Elecraft, you'll have to order using their part numbers,
which I can probably supply in a subsequent communication... don't have
them at my fingertips right now.

The components can be easily assembled onto a small piece of scrap PC board
using either hay-wired or Manhattan-style construction techniques. And the
PC board wrapped with tape and allowed to remain inside the case of the K2,
with the cable being brought out to a DB-9 jack via the KIO2 hole in the
back of the

K2 case.

Although Lyle covers his backside by stating, Note that it is untested.
The risk is entirely yours., I'm confident it will work, AND the it's
probably been used by a number builders already. I'd suggest you drop a
note to Lyle at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to confirm this fact... he should know
by now... it's been around for a couple years.

Though I don't have anything at present, I'll see about whipping up a small
through-hole PC board to accommodate the components and to make
construction much easier. If you decide to use this method of attaching
your KAT100 without the KPA100 or KIO2, please drop me a note after
Christmas to see how much headway I've made on the PC board.

[Elecraft] Status report K2 #4155

2004-07-05 Thread Joe Ford

Successfully completed: Alignment and Test, Part II. All within spec.
What fun, watching everything come up with the right numbers.

I started my inventory around the first of May and actual construction
on May 15th. So I'm not breaking any speed records. Even completing my
K1 #764 without a problem did not prepare me for the thrill that I'm
getting from building this kit. I cannot put into words the gratitude I
feel to Elecraft (and the group on this reflector) for this experience.

Well, back to work. Looks like there are still a few toroids left to
wind.
