[Elecraft] KX3 roofing filters

2013-12-08 Thread JEFFREY BLUMENFELD
Thanks to all for replies and tips. Turns out that the radio as I received it
(factory assembled) had the “xfil3” setting for the roofing filters at “not
install” rather than at “nor”

I changed the setting to “nor” and now the roofing filters do kick in as I
narrow the BW with the PBT control.

2013-12-07 Thread Mark Petiford
Re:  ... I don't know how to tell if those filters are on or not?

If all you want to do is check to be sure they are being selected properly,
skip down to the third paragraph below where it talks about FL1, FL2, and FL3.
If you want to be sure they are turned on (enabled) in the menu, then keep
reading:

Press and hold the DISP (MENU) button until the menu shows up in the main
display.  Rotate the OFS/VFO B know B knob until RX XFIL show up in the
display, then rotate the Main tuning knob to get the display to read NOR for
normal operation (filter working) or NOT INST if the filter is not installed.
Exit the menu by tapping the DISP button.  The filters may now be working, but
it may be necessary to power the KX3 down and back on to get them to work.  The
manual isn't real clear on that.

If you bought your KX3 at the same time you bought your filter module, the
filters should be installed and the required opposite sideband suppression
calibration should have already been done, even if your KX3 was a kit.  If not,
you will need to do that calibration after enabling the filters.  That
procedure is in the KXFL3 Installation and Calibration Instructions which is
available on the Elecraft website.

Once you do that, as you narrow the bandpass down using PBT I/II knob, the XFIL
display in the main display just above the PBT knob (NOT the menu display noted
above) will move from FL1 to FL2 to FL3 as you narrow the BPT down.

BTW, I don't believe the filters make a great deal of difference in what you
hear on the radio unless there is a very strong signal just outside your
current passband.  Someone who has used the radio with, and without, the
roofing filters can probably provide better experience than I can.  I have
never operated without the filters installed.

[Elecraft] KX3 - Roofing filters

2012-07-23 Thread Pierre
Hello to all.

Maybe that I don't understand the real utility of the roofing filter but I
observed this. Last saturday, we were on a SOTA summit using two KX3s about 40
feet appart transmitting CW at 5 W. And even with the roofing filters on, we
heard each other's sending as a diffuse noise. I know that changion RX shift to
8 disable the roofing filters, but we were not using that shift.

So, am I missing something about the use of these filters? Are they designed
for operations with operators near each other like SOTA activation on a crowded
summit ?

2012-07-23 Thread JP O'Connor
Hello Pierre,

It is most likely not a roofing filter issue. Rather it is probably a local
oscillator leakage issue. Set the RX ISO menu item to ON and I suspect
the problem will significantly diminish, if not disappear. See page 38 of
the current KX3 owner's manual (Rev B4) for this menu item and for a
discussion of when it may be helpful. Be sure to first refer to the Tech
Mode section on page 35 to unlock this menu item.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Roofing filters

2012-07-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Pierre,

The roofing filters may not necessarily help with such strong signal
rejection as you would have had with 2 KX3s transmitting simultaneously
on different parts of the same band.

The usefulness of the roofing filters is to protect the receiver front
end from normal level signals that are within the passband of the
roofing filter, but not within the passband of the DSP filter. The
result is AGC Pumping by the stronger signal which may not even be heard
because the DSP filter cuts it out.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Roofing filters

2012-07-23 Thread Wayne Burdick
Pierre,

I think what you were hearing was low-level transmit phase noise. The
KX3 has very low phase noise, but with the two radios on the same band
and only 40 feet apart, during quiet conditions, the TX phase noise
floor could be above MDS. Roofing filters won't help with this, but
the KX3's new noise-reduction feature would (coming soon).

Of course if you hear each other's VFOs at close proximity even in RX
mode, you can turn on RX ISO (isolation amp). Adds 10-15 mA to current
drain but drops the VFO leakage by some 70 dB+.

I think that I heard Wayne say at the Elecraft display in Dayton that they

These filters are ahead of the DSP at baseband. They protect the ADC from
overload and should result in better Blocking Dynamic Range (BDR), which has
been a weakness of most SDRs.

Hi,

Yes, that is what I understand. I didn't mean that the filter comes after
the DSP ... it comes before the DSP filter ... but it's bandwidth is
adjusted according to the DSP bandwidth as the DSP bandwidth is
changed the roofing filter will follow. The filter is at a vy low frequency
prior to the ADC ... I am wondering what kind of filter it is as it
certainly can't be a xtal filter at this vy low frequency has to be
some kind of software controlled filter.

[Elecraft] KX3 roofing filters

2011-05-26 Thread Mike Morrow
I am wondering what kind of filter it is as it certainly can't be a xtal
filter at this vy low frequency has to be some kind of software
 controlled filter.

I think that I heard Wayne say at the Elecraft display in Dayton that they
were mechanical filters.
