Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-15 Thread df...@darc.de
When I bought my used KX3 there was a Windcamp heat sink installed. I have not
much experience with high duty modes on full power because I can use the
KXPA100 when power is a critical factor. But I think this solution is
sufficcient, too. But it mostly is offered along with two side handles and a
plastic cover and this set is not cheap despite the fact that it comes from
china.

Some time ago I saw a DIY solution from an italian ham which is simple,
affordable, and not too ugly:

https://kx3companion.com/2014/07/10/simple-cheap-and-effective-diy-heatsink-for-kx3/

And I think it will work for a KX3 when it would work for 5 CPUs.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-14 Thread Ed Cole
I added a heat sink to my KX3 a few years ago since I use it with long
"key-down" digital modes such as wsjt-x (primarily on 6m).

I obtained the heat sink from VE7FMN and it installed easily. Later
Elecraft came out with its version which I bought (but have not
installed). Being a thin metal plate didn't seem comparable in heat
conduction to the die-cast aluminum unit with cooling fins. I tried
finding VE7FMN's product and domain name is not registered so guessing
he quit making them.

Thanks all for the replies.

I'll probably stick with the factory installed one, as I do have the 100
watt amp which I'll use if I need higher power.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-13 Thread Tim Tucker
Several years ago, I published a short article and accompanying video
comparing the original KX3 heat sink to the CoolerKX model including a
basic report on cooling performance. This one has since been discontinued,
but is similar in design to the PAE KX32 model. I never obtained the
updated Elecraft version, but I would be very (pleasantly) surprised if it
could match the performance of a well designed heat sink such as these.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

If you run 12 watts on AM, FM and digital then the supplied heatsink
(assuming it is the newer heatsink the wraps around the bottom of the
KX3) then it should be adequate.
If you want to run the full 15 watts on those modes, I would suggest
adding the Pro Audio Engineering heatsink for additional cooling of the PA.

Early versions of the heatsink had only a plate on the back which was
adequate for 12 watts on low duty cycle operation - Tx for 2 minutes and
then a RX period of about 3 minutes or more.

The KX3 will protect itself by reducing power if it gets too hot.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-13 Thread Julia Tuttle
Yeah, what Eric said. Elecraft says, in the "Output Power" specification:
"5 W or less recommended for high-duty-cycle modes (FM, AM, DATA). Power
will automatically be reduced if PA temperature or current limits are
exceeded." The stock heatsink is generally adequate *within* that
recommendation. If you'd like to *exceed* it, you'll benefit from an
aftermarket heatsink. I have the "ultimate" ProAudio one as well, and it is
generally adequate up to the max power output of the KX3 (10-15 W) on
high-duty-cycle modes.

When you say " Elecraft-supplied heat sink" do you just mean the

The factory provided thermal solution is totally fine unless you want to
