RE: Potentially Explosive Atmospheres

2002-02-22 Thread Kazimier_Gawrzyjal

Hi Ron,

One set of warning guidelines exists in UL 913 (standard for intrinsically
safe equipment) cl. 17doesn't address cell phone use specifically but
directly addresses the batteries.

NEC Article 500 invokes the need to address the fact that batteries in
portable electronic equipment can become an ignition source in locations
classified as hazardoussee the fine print notes in the various
definition sections of Article 500.

I'm betting the forum experts on Haz Loc might provide better references.

This may seem like a dumb question, but how would a cellphone pose a
hazard? I am unaware of anything in a cellphone that can cause any kind
of a spark or arc that might start combustion in such an atmosphere.
Certainly none of the keypad contacts could cause a problem.

RE: 60950 SFC

2002-02-22 Thread Gregg Kervill

We are required (by the standards, general morality, legal liability, etc)
to ensure that products will remain 'safe' under worst case conditions.

Hence we spend much soul-searching to evaluate and to test under
'worst-case' conditions.

Fuzing in most countries is generally via a 16 A CB or fuze - hence this is
used for testing. It is pretty hopeless if the power cord ignites BEFORE the
fuze blows - so check out worst case (high, and low voltage) and worst place
for short-circuits to maximuze the current - AND to maximize the let-through
energy.

In the UK domestic plugs can be fitted with fuzes between 1A and 13A - some
manufacturers supply plugs with a 13A marking AND a 1A fuze. PLEASE check
that you do not use this configuration - these are potential fire hazards
waiting to happen.

Best regards

Gregg

It is certainly inappropriate for UK. We have fused plugtops, 3 A, 5A,

Has anyone had experience using Audio-Codec '97 (AC 97) topology with
respect to EMC performance. It is commonly used in PC sound cards. We have

seeing very high emissions between 100-600 MHz. The offending RF noise

RE: Different shades of UL

2002-02-22 Thread Gary McInturff

Well, just briefly. The backwards UR is a component recognition. It can
be used in a end unit only if the conditions of acceptability that are placed
in the UL report are met. E. G. Power supplies would have obvious things like
the end use product must provide and adequate fire enclosure etc. Less obvious
might be the requirement for a specific amount of airflow across the power
supply itself - this one can bite the unwary.
The UL in a circle indicates a Listed product - those products that are
fully ready for a user. Plug it in and go. A computer for example. (Inside of
which is probably a recognized power supply - which is now properly housed and
cooled)
Then there is the ULc which means its a listed product and evaluated to
bi-national standards for the US and Canada. (CSA has a similar mark)
There are actually other forms of markings as well, the words
Underwriters Listed for example could be used instead of the UL in a circle
thing. Then there are Classified items such as sheet rock, roofing materials
etc. Haven't a clue what that marking looks like.
I suppose there are variants that I haven't mentioned but these are the
essentials to your question I believe.

RE: Different shades of UL

2002-02-22 Thread Bill Ellingford

A very quick and basic summary:

Very roughly speaking, the UL marks can be interpretted as follows. (OK
there are pages and pages of jargon attached to each but the quick messy
answers are):

the UL, UL listed and CUL listed products are those that have been tested at
a UL test facility and passed the relevant applicable product tests (safety)
for such a device. The CUL denotes listing is acceptable to UL and
harmonised Canadian standards. The list info and file will outline the
standard applied (maybe UL1950 / UL60950) and models of the equipment
covered. Such listed devices are manufactured at UL inspected factory
facilities.

The mirror image logo is applied to components and parts for which UL have a
manufacturing scheme. This means parts marked with the logo have been
tested using UL inspected methods and under a UL checked quality system.
This could be on a cable such a a VW-1 rated cord or a PCB with V0 Rating
etc. Adopting logo marked parts for use in a UL listed product makes for
easier tracability of critical components.

There is also a UL listed Accessory which is for devices intended to be
installed in a host (like a card for a PC). This is like the UL, CUL mark
but requires installation instructions as part of the assessment.

Hope this helps: Bill Ellingford

I know that this has been covered before. But please indulge my
ignorance.

There are many different forms of UL marks, each with subtle
differences.

There is the UL in a circle. There is also the mirror lettered RU.
There are also some subscripts denoting approval for Canada as well.
There may be some other variations that I can't remember. Anyone care
to blow a few minutes on a Friday afternoon to explain which symbol
means what?

Thanks,

Re: Different shades of UL

2002-02-22 Thread ooverton

Chris,

Go to the following site and it explains it very well with examples.

http://www.ul.com/mark/index.html

The information not covered are the :
product type (e.g., I.T.E.) (there is a lot of variation allowed
here),
4 character Listing Mark Control Number (LMCN) which is a
confidential ID for the applicant,
 UL file number when appropriate,
use of the word Accessory or similar when appropriate,

The use of the LMCN and UL File Number is determined by who the Applicant
and Listee are and who's name is on the power rating label.

Also the little detail that the text must be in all Caps and Bold.

AC 97

2002-02-22 Thread Darrell Locke

Esteemed Colleages;

Has anyone had experience using Audio-Codec '97 (AC 97) topology with
respect to EMC performance. It is commonly used in PC sound cards. We have
a device that incorporates this technology for voice recognition and are
seeing very high emissions between 100-600 MHz. The offending RF noise
source appears to be entirely differential.

Thanks

Re: Different shades of UL

2002-02-22 Thread LeeSchmitz

Chris,

The RU is the Recognized mark. It is applicable to products that are
incomplete in construction features or limited performance capabilities so as
not to warrant their acceptability as a field installed component. This
mark does not look like a UL mark because it is not for public or retail use.
If this mark is displayed on a retail advertisement or package it is not
proper use of the mark.

UL in a circle is the Listing Mark. It is authorized on products that
comply with the requirements of UL.

UL in a Circle with a C at the lower right signifies products that have been
tested by UL to the Canadian requirements. Of course UL in a circle with US
at the lower left and C at the lower right signifies products that have been
tested by UL to the UL requirements and the Canadian requirements.

UL in a circle with the word Classified around the top of the circle
signifies products that are classified with respect to: a: properties of the
product b: A limited spectrum of hazards to life or property c: suitability
for certain uses or d: other conditions.

Note: there are other, little used, marks with the words Underwriters
Laboratories written out that also mean Listed

Hi all,

I know that this has been covered before. But please indulge my
ignorance.

There are many different forms of UL marks, each with subtle
differences.

There is the UL in a circle. There is also the mirror lettered RU.
There are also some subscripts denoting approval for Canada as well.
There may be some other variations that I can't remember. Anyone care
to blow a few minutes on a Friday afternoon to explain which symbol
means what?

RE: Use of PCB Traces as Fuse and Voltage suppressor

2002-02-22 Thread Mike Hopkins

Gas discharge tubes can be very complex devices and have a number of
specifications. Normally the voltage spec that you see is the DC
specification, in other words, the firing voltage if the voltage is slowly
ramped up (2kV/second is on rate used); however, the impulse voltage -- the
voltage at which the tube fires with a fast pulse (anywhere from 100V/us to
10kV/us) is normally much higher.

One of the objectives in gas tube design is to get the DC and impulse
voltages to be as consistent as possible, and as close together as possible
(actually very difficult). Gas mixtures, doping, electrode geometry, etc.
are all critical to the design. Some gas is sensitive to light, some work
better in the light and for a while, some were doped with radioactivity to
help control the firing point under different voltage impulse conditions.

Hope this helps Nothing's ever simple.

Best Regards,

Mike Hopkins
Thermo KeyTek.

Our experience with gas discharge tubes was that they worked according to
spec in the lab. fired perfectly around 400V like they're supposed to, but
down inside of the PVC oil tank holding the 150KV isolation transformer they
liked to fire at 600V+

Guess they needed photon energy to make the gas trigger or something.

Hi Bogdan,

I'm sorry if you thought that my previous message was an endorsement for
using necked down PCB traces as a fuse. I understand and share the
sentiment that it is an unpredictable and probably not even cost
effective solution.

I was wondering why anyone would shape a PCB trace in such a way (two
triangles pointing at each other with a thin trace between the points).
A fuse is probably not the likely intention. A reasonable explanation
may be a cut jumper. The triangles make the trace visible; while the
thin trace provides an easy spot for the trace to be cut with an exacto
knife which permanently removes the jumper.Another reason
(suggested by a colleage) are alignment marks used by the PCB fab house
to help align layers.

Just to be sure... I'm not suggesting the above as design ideas. I'm
just trying to figure out why anyone would do such a thing.

One solution to the original problem that I haven't seen suggested is
the good old air discharge tube, gas-discharge tube, gas tube
...whatever you want to call them. Of course, they aren't free (about
$1 each). They are more predictable than open air terminals, they are
UL/CSA recognized and they can handle some massive breakdown currents.
They are available from Bourns and Sankosha USA... probably some other
manufacturers as well.

Chris

 Gabi:
I believe that there is a basic rule which is not published anywhere:
when you design something, then do it right.
When transient suppressors are needed, then use the correct component,
which will not depend on Paschen's Law and give predictable
 performance.

 Same for necked down fuses.
When you want performance, then do it right. The above original
 suggestions are perfect for Mickey-Mouse-engineering.
 Bogdan.

RE: Potentially Explosive Atmospheres

2002-02-22 Thread Andrew Carson

Robert

Any radio source can prove hazardous in explosive atmospheres. Metal
work of the right shape and size can act as an antenna, then all that is
required is momentary discontinuity, or a momentary return path to
ground and a spark will form.

The petrochemical industrial have been aware of this problem for a long
time and a draft EN standard is in progress regarding RF fields in
proximity to areas with explosive atmospheres.

I do not know about the rest of the world, but in the UK petrol stations
have big signs saying, Switch of ignition. No Smoking, No Cell Phones.
Although today's low powered phones are unlikely to cause a spark to
form.

This may seem like a dumb question, but how would a cellphone pose a
hazard? I am unaware of anything in a cellphone that can cause any kind
of a spark or arc that might start combustion in such an atmosphere.
Certainly none of the keypad contacts could cause a problem.

Hi,
I am trying to find in the UL specifications where a cell phone manual
must
contain a warning to the user on using the phone in a potentially
explosive
atmosphere.

Thanks in advance,
