Re: [PSES] Making 50 Hz power

2018-09-07 Thread Michael Mertinooke
Many years ago, a local test lab in Newburyport, MA used decommissioned
hydroelectric

generators driven by electric motors for their AC mains testing.

For 50 Hz they dropped huge resistors (carbon piles???) in the river and
just loaded
down the motor-generators. The boiling river water, including some
pretty decent

parboiled seafood, was certainly something to behold.

Greetings all,

In the past I've needed to produce three phase 50 Hz power to do
safety, EMC testing as well as certain validation tests.  I've
used several methods including gas powered generators, electric
motor-generators with different sized pulleys and of course AC
Power Sources.  Once again, I am faced with this need and must
make a choice as to which route to follow.  As for budgetary,
rental is preferred over purchase and I am working in the 50 to
100 KVA range.  I d need variable frequency as well as voltage
adjustment for high and low line.  I have a small collection of
transformers to help with large voltage changes.  Although I've
never done it, I am also aware that it is possible to configure
motor-generators with direct drive shafts and select the number of
poles and RPM to change output frequency.

My question is what method are most folks in this forum using when
it comes to 50 Hz higher power levels?

Thanks! Doug

WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which,

RE: Hertz Vibration?

2001-08-14 Thread Michael Mertinooke

I found quite a lot of references via Google, to 'Hertzian
Vibration.' A lot of them made reference to contact
closure types of equipment. By inference, it seems to
be used in relation to low-frequency mechanical vibration.

Still sounds like a stupid bit of pseudo jargon to me.
Like 'Hourly time' or 'Gallonic volume.' It's just wrong.

A public apology to Agilent

2001-06-27 Thread Michael Mertinooke

Hi;

A couple weeks ago I politely criticized the HP/Agilent E7401A
spectrum analyzer. Okay, so I called it a piece of garbage.

That was based on two basic facts:
1) It was ridiculously user-unfriendly.
2) Customer support was friendly but unhelpful.

I now wish to publicly apologize. Two nice people at Agilent,
Ms. Cathy Kirk and Mr. Mike Medley, have invested considerable
time and effort on my behalf. I now have an analyzer
that is much less user-unfriendly. And Customer Support,
as represented by these two people, has done a tremendous
job of diagnosing and resolving my issues. Best of all, the
new firmware has added a bunch of features that I will no
doubt find useful some day.

Regards,
Mike Mertinooke

RE: EMC Wall Charts

2001-05-25 Thread Michael Mertinooke

I also recommend the Schaffner charts. They are just packed
with good reference information!

Put them up next to your screen room, situated so when you
have a visitor, the charts would be visible over his shoulder.
The next time some wise guy who has just taken an EMC
seminar asks you to some wise guy question like name
the dB equivalent of 31.62 microvolts per meter, you
can do a David Letterman chin scratch while casually
scanning the poster out of the corner of your eye ... and
say why, of course, in a 377 ohm free space environment,
the square root of 10 being 3.162, then the answer just has
to be, oh, 30 dB microvolts per meter. While I'm at it, did you
also want to know what that is in dB micro amps per meter?

Caution: pull too many of these amazing mental feats out
of the air, and nobody will want to sit at your table in the
cafeteria

See ya.

RE: Li-ion Batteries

2001-05-21 Thread Michael Mertinooke

Is there a European standard for Li-ion batteries?
Is there a battery directive? If yes, what standards is applicable?
CE mark required?

As far as I know, the relevant EU directive is 98/101/EC, 22 December
1998, which adapts 91/157/EEC on batteries and accumulators. This
only relates to the chemicals used in the battery.

I asked Moltech Power Systems (Energizer) what directives applied
to EU, and got the reply attached below.

RE: HP6842A harmonics analyser - is it obsolete?

2001-01-04 Thread Michael Mertinooke

Dear Valued Regulatory Test Solution Customer,
Agilent Technologies has recently made a strategic decision regarding our
acsource product family...

...to withdraw from the EMI compliance market. So, within a frame
of less than five years, I have a $13,000 software investment which
is no longer supported...

I notice the Agilent Technologies stationery includes the slogan
Innovating the HP Way. This kind of makes you wonder what
the innovative HP Way of customer support is all about, doesn't it?

How many millions of dollars' worth of equipment have each of
us authorized, or will authorize during our 30 or 40 year careers?
Personally, I very much doubt that I will ever recommend purchasing
another piece of HP/Agilent equipment.

According to Ergane 4.2;

freedom = libereco
justice = justeco
property = bieno / eco / kvality (three different words meaning property)
private = nepublika / privata / senofica (three different words in
Esperanto,
only one word in English)
protest = protesti / protesto

Mike Mertinooke

Muriel,
As you are one who has studied Esperanto, I wonder if you would be kind
enough to list the Esperanto equivalents of the following words in English:

Freedom Liberty rightsprotesttyranny
?justice property privacy

This is not simply curiosity, as I was unable to find these in any Internet
Esperanto dictionary. I am very aware of the warning given by Eric Blair
(writing as George Orwell) to be cautious about adopting any language which
does not contain words for such concepts.
