Igor,
Thanks. That's a good idea.

Steve,
I already have a dual boot setup (Win 98SE and Ubuntu).
I think I'll do what Igor suggested - leave the current
hard drive as is, and install 10.04 on a new drive.
Thanks, Steve (and everyone else) for all your help!

Try the Asus version - AT5NM10-I
Should be easy to come by.

That also appears to have the P-port as a socket rather than a header.
However, I wonder if it has the same chipset etc? If not, then the
latency performance might not be the same.

Michael;
Warm is OK. Hot to hold may be a bit much.
I'm not familiar with your controller but many stepper drivers have the
ability to reduce the idle (not stepping) current to the motors, if you
don't
need the high holding idle current for your application.
I have been known to circulate air

G540 drops current to 70% when idle automatically.
If you have enabled (or plan to enable) Idle Current Reduction on the
controller, you might want to check how the G540 controller reactivates the
idled axis. On the Hobbycnc controller, the default reset relies on getting
some step pulses
Ok.. I won't worry too much then.. I doubt they're getting close to 170C
Heatsinks do sound like an interesting option though
