Re: [Emc-users] Pendant recommendations

2013-06-03 Thread Don Stanley
Hi Dave;
Take a look at X-keys @www.xkeys.com
When they are programed to emulate the keyboard keys
of AXIS, you can control all the machine functions
with the hand held pendant. This really simplifies
the operations for me allowing manual operation of the
all the mills functions or at the mill setup and program control.

My choice is the X-keys MWII which allows 39 functions
on 4 by 7 pendant.

You will need access to MS$ system to program the keys
with the software the company provides via Internet.
After programed simply plug into the computer USB port
with the computer keyboard not in Caps Lock and go to work.

I would not recommend programming the home function
on the pendant. That is the one key capable of disaster if
unintentionally pressed.

 Hope this helps
Don

I think the CNC4PC is a pretty good design, and should be reasonably

I have basically duplicated the function of that unit myself. The
  only change
I made was to reverse the polarity of the white button, so it is
  normally open.
This enabled the MPG when pushed. When not pushed, the MPG has
no effect of the machine. The only reason I made my own is the CNC4PC
is a bit expensive for what is in it. I also added a diode encoder so I
could control 4 axes plus spindle override and feed override with only
3 wires to 3 digital inputs. (Another 2 for the rate select switch.)

The way I start getting control over motor is:
 1) first step - get it to spin in n mode; that will require that You setp
bldc.value and bldc.frequency pins at some value. I usually set value at
 0.15 and frequency 10
Motor is reversed by changing value to negative number. Easy way to do is
issue setp bldc.n.value -0.15 in Show HAL configuration window.

To me motor is not reversed by negating bldc.n.value. It reverses on
negative frequency instead.

Is this ok?

It is set up so that a second button
has to be pressed to enable jogging to prevent accidental jogging. Is
there some equivalent safety feature on the Jog It! pendant?

Nope. The JogIt pendant is a very simple device. Pushing any button
sends a keyboard command, the same as if the key was pressed on a
keyboard. The difference is, the pendant buttons are specific to
running a CNC machine, the simplified pendant keypad is laid out
ergonomically for CNC control, and the keys are labeled for their CNC
function as opposed to a regular keyboard that has letters and numbers
and symbols spread all over the place.

There is a pair of buttons to increase and decrease the jog speed so you
can jog slowly for delicate work or you can go fast if you're in a hurry
when making long moves. There are six dedicated buttons for jogging the
X, Y and Z axes, each in both directions. The JogIt pendant also allows
homing, running programs, stopping programs, pausing and resuming
programs, control of two dedicated outputs AUX1 and AUX2 which might be
used for flood and mist coolant in some applications.

Because the JogIt pendant is essentially a keyboard and it's open
source, you could easily add a normally open push button in series with
the power from the USB port, so that button would need to be pressed
before the other buttons were active, but so far I haven't found it to
be a big problem. I just don't press buttons when I shouldn't. :-)

An MPG is very cool and definitely has the real CNC feel about it, but I
find the JogIt to be quite adequate for my needs, and I do love the
plug-n-play aspect of it. If you have an open USB port for the JogIt,
it's gonna work with no HAL file manipulation, no wiring, no searching
the internet after it doesn't work, etc.

There are a couple of demo videos on the KickStarter page I linked to in
my last post. Here it is again.

For touch-offs you are probably better set with the MPG. Be nice if they
had a built-in joystick on the MPG I have. The nice thing about most of
the joysticks is they're USB, so don't require a second parport. Also, a
lot of the MPG's require an adapter to go from the DB25 parallel port to
the DB-something or other the MPG uses. The adapter also requires 5 VDC,
which is gotten from a spare USB port.

This one encoder X, Y and Z, feedrate and spindle
overrides. The diodes convert the single pole switch so it
creates a binary code, which is then decoded in the HAL
file. I have HAL files linked there for two versions. The
UPC pendant file matches the schematic, the PPMC pendant
is a bit different, it has 4 axes before the spindle and feedrate
settings. These connect to the digital inputs of my
motion control boards, which require a sinking-type switch.
In a case where the contacts need a voltage source, the
diodes would be reversed.

The whole purpose of this is to save digital inputs. On the
UPC/Minimill setup, I had already used up all my encoder
counters, so I interfaced the MPG also through digital
inputs, and was running very short. The multiplexing
allowed me to have 5 or 6 selections (axes plus overrides)
as well as 3 rate selections with only 5 wires and 5 digital
inputs.

FYI, I did something similar to Jon and used only 2 wires for the 3 feed
rates. Though, I left the smallest (X1) increment as the unconnected one
to use as the default if one of the other two weren't active. So if the
switch is between positions, flaky contact, broken wire, etc it defaults to
the smallest increment.

[Emc-users] USB Pendant (XHC HB04)

2013-06-03 Thread Ted Hyde
Not to hijack the recent pendant thread, but I thought I saw scrolling
past that someone may have had working the XHC pendants with LCNC?
These are (rather sexy) USB or USB-Wireless units with an MPG, LCD for
DRO and button pad. I picked up one of the wireless units, despite my
misgivings about wireless control, more for fun with a friend who is
still running Mach3 (so I could give it away if needed) - but thinking
that maybe that someday I might actually get the time to see if HIDCOMP
would see it.

Although these are available from a variety of sellers,
http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/mpgs/wireless-mpg-handwheel-for-mach3-controller

is the most loved distributor by the Mach guys, currently.

This isn't a plug for this device, as I certainly don't have it working
(at all) with LinuxCNC (or even Mach at the moment) - but I'm fishing to
see if someone already has

Regards,

Ted.

 Is this ok?

I guess that yes, as You will not control the motor with these setting
anyway, it is just to check, if the drive actually can spin the motor - it
is wired correctly etc. Now You can turn motor slowly and check, if all 3
Hall sensor signals are received and You can check, if encoder position is
captured correctly (it increments/decrements correctly as motor turns one
or the other direction).

Did You try h mode? For me it was the toughest to find correct Hall
pattern. Later on going to qh was relatively easy.

PCW has pointed out to me that some of the Hall patterns are not
actually valid, as they don't follow a progressive sequence.
However, it is a bit late to go changing them now…

Checking the bldc.N.hall-error pin is a good idea. If that shows
true then no matter if the motor is spinning, the hall pattern is
wrong.

Try 15 first.

I believe the rub comes in on the USB is because if a device has any
storage in it, like a 2Gb usb-key, the system has to scan it for mistaken
organization. That takes time screws with lcnc. Take the storage out of
the scene, and I believe its effect is relatively minimal. Heck, I'm using
USB wireless keyboard and mouse on the lathe, and the only time I have a
problem is if the receiver gizmo gets knocked off the top of the spindle
housing, its cable can reach the floor, and that too long a range for
reliable operation with those puny powered bluetooth used in those.

I'm going back and forth on how to mount the screen to the arm.. I may

 machine already.

 Thanks, Dave
