Re: [Emc-users] loading emc-unbuntu
Kirk, I now have a cd that works. It boots on one pc but not the one I want to use it on. The problematic pc just goes to a blank screen as soon as the boot sequence starts. I have formatted the hard drive on this pc and it was having registry problems before...windows xp. So my problem is specific to this pc. Chris, How about putting the hard drive from the bad machine into the good machine and trying to install onto it there? The other thing would be to get hold of a low level disk repair program and run it on the disk from the suspect machine. If you install the Linux as the only OS on the machine it should reformat the whole disk and probably get rid of any problems generated on there by windoze. -- Best wishes, Ian Ian W. It should work in the VESA/BIOS mode the boot CD uses, but it may not. I don't think 3DLabs was ever very good with Linux drivers, so you may be out of luck there. CAD cards (especially ones that are only expected to work under Windows) often don't implement much of the VESA spec - I guess they figure the card will be put in text mode for the BIOS, the 320x200 mode Windows shows during boot, then some high resolution driver-managed mode. Re: [Emc-users] loading emc-unbuntu
Congratulations, you have graduated to the next level of problems. I also had problems loading a couple of my computers. Some of the things to check which may or may not have an effect: 1) Have at least 256mB of RAM. You can reduce this after the installation 2) Use a DVD drive (yeah, wierd, but it worked for me) 3) Use the built-in video feature on your motherboard only (later, for better EMC performance use a pci or agp card, and pci parallel port if you are using a parallel port) 4) Use noacpi(?) or other boot command options. From memory, it is something like - at the opening screen, press F3 (the menu may indicate which). These are installation issues with Ubuntu in general and not EMC. So searching on the above and Ubuntu installation might give you more information. Sorry, for not giving you more specific information, but this should get you pointed in the right direction. After sorting this out, I had no problems during the installations. I can try to fill in the details if needed. Good Luck. Chris Mason wrote: Kirk, Thanks for the help. I have the files made onto the cd correctly now.I think. When I put in the cd the ubuntu image comes up and it says launching browser, after about 20sec. it just goes away and nothing. This is normal. To make room for EMC, the Windows-based demos and programs were removed from the CD. The browser wasn't, so it runs, doesn't find anything to show you, and goes away. If I boot from the cd, a blank screen comes up and just stays there. So still not in business. Let me know what you think. Is the screen always blank, or do you get a boot ment, then some messages+a progress bar, then a blank screen, or is it something different from those? One additional thing to try is to download a stock Ubuntu CD (from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu) and boot from that. Ideally, you'd get version 6.06 LTS desktop edition, since that's what the EMC2 liveCD is based on. Burn that and boot from it, and see if that works. If not, check the Ubuntu forums, as was already suggested, for tips on your hardware. You can also try a newer distribution, such as 7.04. If 6.06 LTS and EMC2 don't boot, but 7.04 does, that helps us to decide when to change the distribution EMC2 is based on. Thank you, Chris Mason Thanks. Please keep trying to get this to work - we'd like to help, but don't know if it's our problem or Ubuntu's problem (or a hardware problem or a user error) yet :) - Steve - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
