I think you're right, Dan. Option 2 is actually somewhat slower -- maybe
25% -- than Mark All as Read when all of the messages are unread. But, if
you're just catching up the latest few dozen messages in a folder that has
a few thousand items, Option 2 is 10x faster or more.
