When you pull down the Tools menu and select Run Schedule, you follow the Run Schedule bar about 2-3 inches to the right to the 6 options. Run Schedule is too narrow to quickly go to the options. There are five entries under Tools that have options to the right. Of the five only Run Schedule is frequently used. A wider bar would make it easier to track across to the Run Schedule options. I see what George is saying. It's a little misleading because vertical width is usually called height. Re: Feature request
You must be right, Zachary. But in George's explanation he refers to the 2 or 3 inches that you have to move along to the right, then says that that's too narrow. For the life of me, I don't see how making it 4 inches or wider would make it any easier. So you must be right: George must be referring to the height of each menu item, which is determined by the standard Apple fonts used for all menu items. Well, as you can see from the pictures at MacTopia and the Word demo, everything in OS X is bigger. Fonts are bigger, menu items are bigger. So when you need to use the mouse (for example, for all schedules except Send Receive All and Send All which are the only ones to have keyboard shortcuts), there should indeed be more comfort room. -- Paul Berkowitz From: Zachary Braverman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Entourage:mac Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 01 Nov 2001 20:54:18 +0900 To: Entourage mac Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Feature request I see what George is saying. FW: Entourage problems
I pass along this message for the interest of the Microsoft team. Jan had written to me off list for help. I sent him info about the layout of the MUD folder, what files were what, and so on. He had gone back and forth between OE and Entourage and was getting Error 3 messages when he tried to open Erage. Had tried Entourage rebuilds to no avail. Apparently, using OE to rebuild the Entourage file worked. ??? Is it possible that, somehow, he confused the two databases, and got a database for Entourage that was actually an OE database? Otherwise, I'm mystified as to how this could have worked for him. Any comments? I'm curious, but obviously there is no dire need here. -- Add me to Palm/Visor: http://signature.coola.com/?[EMAIL PROTECTED] Allen Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] XNS name: =Allen Watson Applescripts for Outlook Express and Entourage: http://homepage.mac.com/allenwatson/ -- Forwarded Message From: Jan Donnithorne [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 01 Nov 2001 09:19:03 -0500 To: Allen WATSON [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Entourage problems Good morning to you Allen!! Attempting to rebuild the database using the internal Microsoft rebuild functions (accessed by holding down the Option key when launching) didn't succeed , but I was able to recover everything by round-tripping the corrupt database through Microsoft Outlook Express. Here how: 1. Copy the suspected corrupt Database and Messages files from the Microsoft Entourage data folder (typically Documents: Microsoft User Data: Office 2001 Identities: Main Identity folder) into the Microsoft Outlook Express data folder (typically Documents: Microsoft User Data: Identity), replacing the existing Database and Messages files. 2. Now, launch Outlook Express while holding down the Option key to trigger a database rebuild. This is important because you want Outlook to merge the data from the Entourage database files into the Outlook Express database files. Depending on the size of the files, this can take a bit of time to complete. After the database is rebuilt, Outlook Express will popup an error message and immediately quit. Don't panic, this is normal. 3. Next, move the Main Identity folder (the one which you suspect is corrupt) from the Microsoft User Data: Office 2001 Identities folder onto the Desktop and re-launch Entourage. Go through the steps to create a dummy e-mail account, but in step 4 of the Setup Assistant choose Import information from my e-mail program, and then Outlook Express in step 5. This will import the now clean data from Microsoft Outlook Express and merge it into a Microsoft Entourage database. This can take an exceedingly long time depending on the size of the Database and Messages files, but will result in clean, corruption free Entourage database files. 4. The final step is to quit Entourage and then copy the Location Settings, Mailing Lists, Preferences, Rules and Signatures files from the original, corrupted identity folder into the new, uncorrupted Documents: Microsoft User Data: Office 2001 Identities: Main Identity folder. Now launch Entourage for the last time and verify that the clients account information is properly entered and that the e-mail and address books appear to be intact. Note: We have not tried this out to confirm that it works. In any case, it seems a bit odd that the Outlook Express rebuild would work where the Entourage one did not. But if you are desperate, this is worth a shot. Just make sure you have back-up copies of your files. Update: Caleb replies: It's not that the Outlook Express rebuild is any

It isn't so much an issue with items that aren't at the top of the menu. One of the unwritten rules of UI design on the Mac is not to put a hierarchal menu as the first item in a menu because they tend to be very hard for users to hit. It is even worse on Windows, where the menu interferes with keyboard navigation! Unfortunately, companies (and I'm not singling out Microsoft here!) seem to be forgetting lessons of the past. Personally, I think redesigning to somehow remove the hierarchal menus for Run Schedule and Send Receive is in order. At a minimum, something like this: Send Receive All Send All Send Receive Account Run Schedule Send Receive All is probably the most commonly used menu command in the program. It should be at the top of a top-level menu... it really doesn't make sense for it to be so hard to get to. Sorry if I ranted a bit there.
