Re: [Eug-lug]Big brother is a Motor Head!

2002-12-06 Thread Bob Crandell
Hi,

I was thinking the hardware would consist of:
coincidently, Dodge Aries for, what, $500.00? Is it an automatic?
A high end GPS for say $750.00 to $1000.00. A cheap GPS will keep the car on or
near the road. A high end GPS might keep in the correct lane.
Remote control gear for start, stop, steering. $500.00
A Linux powered computer $1500.00. Don't think cheap.
Access to MapQuest, Priceless.

It's my turn to Hmmm...Maybe Jammie is right.
There will also need to be a video system to detect pedestrian, stop lights, stop
signs, cross traffic, etc. $
A collision avoidance system. They come as a kit now. $$$

Once the car refuses to hit a wall inspite of your most valiant efforts, then there
will be tons of hours programming it to get from here to anywhere, including L.V.
I didn't read the rules but if you can't tell the car to stop for gas, then make it
solar powered, use fuel cells or follow it with a gas truck. (Pull a 500 gallon gas
tank on a trailer?)

Cheers.

Wait a minute. You want to avoid pedestrians? Cyclists
maybe but pedestrians?!! I'm sure the majority of
entries are going to be solar powered unless that's
out of the rule books. We are talking LA to LV here.

It is an automatic! The car is the cheapest part! (I was going to sell it for
$300 (+repairs needed if any...)
Ive used/programmed vision systems for pick and place machines, its pretty
easy actually. Part of the trip is off road though... the vehicle is front
wheel drive, but its not an off road vehicle really... not the best
clearance, not super rugged, ...
I can honestly do anything I want with this vehicle... if people are really
serious about this.. we could use it, however... its 17 years old... you
never know whats going to break! I do however need the driveway space (and
could use the money for xmas gifts and stuff...) So... If we have enough
seriously interested people that really want to do this... Ill donate it to
the cause.

Opps - I should of checked the rules page - seems that refueling IS
allowed (autonomously automatically at checkpoints) as is cleaning,
however wireless internet communications apparently ISN'T - only GPS
communications are allowed (see below).

Only single independent, untethered ground vehicles are eligible. No
sub-vehicles will be allowed. All computing and intelligence must be
contained onboard. Apart from the emergency stop feature (see Safety),
automatic communication with autonomous equipment at the checkpoints
(see Checkpoints) and GPS signals, no external communication is allowed

Checkpoint(s)
A checkpoint is a required safety stop at a pre-defined location on the
course. The chase vehicle occupants can be rotated or refreshed with no
time penalty against the autonomous vehicle. The elapsed time for each
vehicle will stop during the mandatory portion of a stop. In addition,
an entry may be serviced autonomously (for example, refueled or
cleaned). Any required autonomous servicing equipment must be placed at
the checkpoint prior to the start of the race. The location of the
checkpoint(s) will be provided well in advance of the race.

Sponsers, yes. About the time I hit the send button, it occured to me that what we
really need is a good grant writer.

I figure if we count time with a value of $0.00, we are still investing $10,000.00
to $20,000.00 in all the different technologies involved to accomplish this feat.
