Here's another possible solution to the dendrite problem.

Bruce may have posted this item already, although I didn't find it in the
archive.

I wonder how much more a lithium metal battery for an EV would cost per kWh -
not just to amortize the development costs, but for raw materials.

One of the other problems to be solved would be how to ensure the safety of
lithium metal in a collision. It's highly reactive stuff, very eager to
combine with many gases (including the oxygen in the air) and water. You
don't try to put out a lithium fire with a fire hose! It can do nasty
things to your skin with just a little perspiration.

Even if the problems are all couquered, I don't expect to see lithium metal
batteries available in, say, 2020 EVs. The first experimental lithium ion
batteries were developed in 1980, IIRC. The first commercial lithium ion
battery was released 11 years later. LiIon didn't become all that common in
(expensive) portable electronic gadgets until about the mid-1990s.

FWIW, the first lithium-ion-powered EV I know of was the Altra EV, a rather
sizable wagon based on a Japanese-market Nissan. Nissan built 200 of them
between 1997 and 2001. They used Sony lithium-cobalt and Hitachi lithium-
manganese modules. The range was stated as "up to" 120-140 miles, with 70-
100 miles considered more practical.

I never saw a purchase price for an Altra. AFAIK they were leased, not
sold, mostly to public utilities. Still, I wonder if any were sold and
might still be floating around.

Re: [EVDL] Prius Engine rebuilt?

2016-06-18 Thread Haudy Kazemi via EV
I second Cor on finding a used engine out of a lower mile wreck.

I encouraged some friends to do just that when their 2010 Prius engine failed.
That story began with knocking (only some of the time and only when moderately
or heavily loaded) somewhere 170-180k. This was traced to a cracked spark plug,
which was replaced, but then the replacement also cracked after a short time.
Additional testing showed that coolant was leaking into at least one cylinder
(head gasket issue), and may have caused the cracked spark plugs.

It finally threw a rod through the block just after passing 200k.

Not sure why the engine developed the head gasket issue. I heard that the car
experienced a severe engine oil overfill around 150-160k.

Simultaneous with the above, the 12v battery was found to be weak after 6 years
of use. The car experienced other misc issues until that was replaced, leaving
only the engine issue.

It is back on the road again with a young 20k mile engine and new
brakes/rotors. The main pack and electric transaxle are still original.

I can buy a racing engine for about 2X to 4X that price so that price seems

[EVDL] EV-tourism charging @Half Moon Bay: Hwy 1 EV trip

2016-06-18 Thread brucedp5 via EV

[ref

>While driving Highway 1 may have no pass it has several big hills. I'm not
sure the up and down would match the pass but I'd have to drive it and find
out. At night there is a head wind going North. Not sure I have the
cojones to try it not to mention a huge climb out of Pacifica.<

The 1000' climb near Pacifica is about half of what you already did getting
to and from Santa Cruz, so it should not be a problem for your Leaf.

As you said, doing a trial run to see what you can do, IMO is a good idea.
With the taking of Hwy 1 to get to Santa Cruz (78mi) sometime in the future
being your fact finding goal, perhaps a half-way jaunt would be first step.

Looking at a map
https://goo.gl/maps/iProhkKC6VS2
From SF to Santa Cruz via Hwy 1 is 49mi. From SF to Half Moon Bay (HMB) is
30mi. HMB has a public EVSE:

http://api.plugshare.com/view/location/60831
Half Moon Bay City Hall
PlugScore 10.0 [very good]
Ports 2 EV Plug (J1772)s
EV Plug (J1772) ChargePoint 7.2kw
Address 714 Kelly Ave Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
Cost $1/ hr [charging] + $1 parking
[read the driver's comments on this EVSE]

While your 75+mi range may not 'need' a charge at the 30mi point to get back
home, IMO it would be a good experience to use that EVSE as well as reduce
any concerns/angst some might have.

If you left your SF house charged and drove Hwy 1 south to HMB and plugged
in, you could spend a couple hours there charging, walking around, and enjoy
the town. This might even be a good way to include/bring-along that someone
special to enjoy it together. After you return home you would have
experienced EV-tourism (which is similar to eco-tourism).

I'll assume you already carry a Chargepoint rfid card with you encase of
emergencies as their brand of public EVSE is the most prevalent. But if you
don't, you can still pay for a charge using an app or by calling them:
http://www.chargepoint.com/faq/
... You can easily start a session with your ChargePoint card, using the
ChargePoint mobile app, with an RFID credit card or by calling driver
support at 888-758-4389. The 888 number is listed on each ChargePoint
station and on the back of your ChargePoint card.

You may want to install their free app as well as Plugshare.com 's on your
mobile:

Couple and Their Dog Are Driving Across Canada in a Model X and a Solar

(Couple and Their Dog in a Model X and a Solar Trailer)
]

If there was ever a definition of the modern hippy, then this must be it: a
husband, his wife, and their dog driving across a great country for no
particular reason in an electric car towing a trailer with solar panels on
top. It doesn't get any more hip than this.

And still, wouldn't you just love if you could drop everything you were
doing right now and swap places with them? Going on a 6,000+ miles (10,000
km) road trip with no time pressure is probably the best way to get to know
a country.

After all, some people even wrote books about it after similar experiences -
see Ilf and Petrov's "Little Golden America." And while they don't plan to
launch themselves into a career in literature, these two will also document
their journey on a blog and social media.

Like all big ideas, it all started differently. Silke Sommerfeld and Rolf
Oetter have been planning a trip across Canada for over ten years, but never
found the time to do it. Initially, they were supposed to do it in a motor
home, but after acquiring their Model X, leaving a trail of pollution behind
just didn't seem right to them anymore.

So Rolf, a German engineer, set to modify the trailer for the long trip.
Since camping spots only come with one plug, and they would need it for the
car, the trailer had to be energy self-sufficient. By installing 800 watts
of solar panels and a little over five-kilowatt hours worth of lithium ion
batteries, he not only achieved that, but also turned the trailer into an
external power source for the car, capable of delivering between 30 to 40
kilometers of extra range.

The couple estimate their journey will take them about three months, but
that's only because they plan to make the most of it and not rush it in any
way. Tesla is in no way involved in their endeavor, and they make it very
clear that they want to promote electric cars in general, not one brand in
particular.

"This trip is our idea," says Silke, talking to Vancouver Island News. "All
we want is to raise awareness and bring electric cars closer to as many
people as possible." You can follow Silke and Rolf's progress on their
Facebook page [
https://www.facebook.com/teslax.canada.5/timeline

The degradation of electrodes in lithium-based batteries has been a major
inhibitor to their operating life, particularly when dendrites "growing"
from these corroding electrodes short-circuit in the electrolyte. Australian
researchers have found that pre-treating lithium electrodes in a special
salt bath decreases the breakdown of the electrodes and boosts performance
and battery life so markedly it could bring an end to range anxiety for
drivers of electric vehicles.

Scientists from the CSIRO, working jointly with researchers from RMIT
University and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), claim that
their pre-treating technique is so efficient that even after 1,000
charge/discharge cycles, their prototype retains greater than 99.5 percent
Coulombic efficiency, which is a measure of the difference between the
incoming and outgoing charges in a battery as it cycles through charging.

The researchers believe that their new process will help bring on the
development of super-efficient energy storage methods that will completely
negate battery range anxiety that is a major impediment for the electric car
industry today.

"Our research has shown by pre-treating lithium metal electrodes, we can
create batteries with charge efficiency that greatly exceeds standard
lithium batteries," said CSIRO battery researcher Dr Adam Best. "The
pre-treatment reduces the breakdown of electrolytes during operation, which
is what determines the battery's increased performance and lifetime."

By immersing lithium metal electrodes in an electrolyte bath containing a
mixture of the lithium salts Lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and
lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) and the ionic liquid
1-Methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium chloride (C3mpyr), the pre-treatment covers
the surface of the electrode with a protective film that is so efficient
that even after more than 2,500 hours of battery cycling, no evidence of any
dendrite formation was found.

Whilst a myriad other methods have been researched on eliminating dendrite
formation from the degradation of lithium battery electrodes, including
coating them with carbon nanospheres and changing the composition of the
electrolyte in which they are immersed, this latest technology has shown the
largest number of charge/discharge cyclic efficiency with absolutely no
dendrite formation visible.

Other advantages of this process include the ability for treated batteries
to sit on the shelf for up to a year without their performance being
affected, and that the techniques are simple and easy to adopt in current
battery manufacturing methods.

The CSIRO holds patents to the electrolyte salt solutions, which come in a
variety of different chemical compositions. The research team is now intent
on creating and evolving batteries based on the new process and techniques,
and is currently searching for commercial collaborators to assist in
commercial development of the technology.

Re: [EVDL] L2 across USA tripper might want to rethink his 2nd trip EV ...

2016-06-18 Thread Mike Nickerson via EV
Wow. I used to think that Idaho has a dearth of electric vehicles. In Boise,
we have around a dozen or so Tesla Model S. The first Model X I know of is
coming to town this weekend. I see a Tesla on the road every few weeks (2 this
week). Usually, I see Leaf more often than that. I seem to see Volt less
often than Leaf. Since we don't have state incentives and aren't a compliance
state, it is pretty unusual to see anything else. I have seen a BMW i3 once.

Luckily, with the growth in vehicles, Tesla decided to put SuperCharger
stations along the local Interstate (I84). That has really helped EV travel in
the area for owners.
