Re: [EVDL] Seeking charger for 180VDC 56-cell LiFePO4 pack

2015-08-24 Thread brucedp5 via EV
Thanks for providing more details.
I will makes some assumptions:
-since the old 3kW charger would likely suite your power and cost needs,
that is your goal (you don't need that much, and saving on cost is good).

-your BMS is likely the Lithiumate Lite model

-your .ch free web email domain tells me you are in or near Europe, so
sourcing EV components closer to home would serve you better, but further
away is not out of the question (if push comes to shove).

Rather than looking at all the chargers available, I started my research
from your BMS selection
http://elithion.com/applications.php?app=0
http://lite.elithion.com/pdf/Lithiumate_Lite_Installation_Manual.pdf
http://liionbms.com/php/charger_options.php
is a nice page showing all the chargers compatible with your BMS. However I
found some typos and a dead link (I have sent an email to Davide), so you
will have to work a little to get what you need.

Using the criteria of 3kW 180V, I found a couple more links for you to
explore:

Why a discontinued charger that will be hard to get support or repaired?

I'm not the original poster, but I can give you one reason. Regardless of
generation, Brusa makes (and has made for years) the most flexible, smartest
chargers I've ever seen.

More importantly, they are NOT locked down by default. Some EV chargers are
quite smart, but they're deliberately locked by their manufacturers, either
into one fixed profile or into a list of unmodifiable selectable ones.
These EV chargers aren't really meant for EV hobbyists who like to tweak and
change things. They're aimed at manufacturers who don't want the owners
tinkering - ever.

Other chargers - including some fairly popular with EV hobbyists - are open,
but just aren't very smart and/or programmable.

Brusa chargers are 100% user programmable. They have what amounts to a
programming language. The factory provides full documentation. You can use
Brusa's premade profiles as-is, modify one, or write your own from scratch.
If you think your finishing voltage or current is too high, you can lower
it. If you'd like to try dv/dt, you can. If you want to change your
battery voltage (over a wide range), that's easy to do.

Brusa's main downside is that they are rather expensive chargers in terms of
dollars per watt.

[EVDL] Same reporter bringing both anti e-Bike articles, was: Bu's e-wheely bad idea

2015-08-24 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
At times, our news media do not carry a story to inform us, but to influence
politics
by setting a desired state of mind by the original writers of an article, so I
am always
interested *who* wrote a certain piece and *what* message do they want to
convey, if
possible I like to even figure out *why*.

I remembered that early early July the discussion was about NYC have an archaic
law
that banned any and all e-Bikes and e-scooters, the only things on two wheels
that are
allowed on their streets are either the old (non-assist) bicycle, or a full
motorcycle.
This means that they law is giving serious trouble to the current wave of new
bicycles,
since it is almost impossible to buy a good bike without it having electric
assist.
When I walk into a bike shop in The Netherlands, the only bikes you will find
on display
are the e-Bikes. Asking for a non-assist bike is like asking for a
steam-powered car
or a record player.

So, it appears that NYC has some catching-up to do, but I cannot escape the
thought that
someone thought it was a great idea to see if he could swing public opinion
against
e-bikes (since the vast majority of people on the road in the USA have no clue
about
bicycles other than that they once used them when they were young and it is too
dangerous
now and they are always in the way when you see them) since it is easy to
vilify them.

Then they came across this Chinese man who was delivering his daily round but
got busted by
police, so they make up a nice story (oh no, do they do that? Yep, they do)
about him
not only going against traffic (which a certain percentage of ordinary bikers
do every day)
but also weaving through traffic in a tunnel, endangering everyone, and they
made it Big News.

Of course, those are just impressions from my more cynical side, but I wonder
why else would
this same reporter do this piece, again attacking e-bikes in NYC? I could be
totally off and
it could be pure coincidence, but for some reason those coincidences always
set off a
red flag in my mind. I have seen this too often.
So, don't give too much credit to this story until you have heard the other
side.
I would not be surprised if Bu was riding on the bike lane (in the wrong
direction maybe
but that happens a lot, especially if you need to make two left turns on bike
and you do not
want to cross traffic twice) and he simply had to swerve around an illegally
stopped car
or debris in the road (that often collects in the lane with the lightest
traffic - the bike lane)
which might have caused someone in a car to have to slow down for him and then
he got busted
with this sensationalist story... I can't escape the thought...

Anyway, I think we have covered just about everything on e-Bikes, so it may be
time to wind it down.

Bu was riding this electric bike through the tunnel, going against traffic.
He was making an early morning food delivery, according to law enforcement
sources.
]

This was a wheely bad idea.

A deliveryman on an electric bicycle was arrested after he zipped into the
Holland Tunnel against traffic and veered around oncoming cars as he made
his way across the Hudson River span, officials said Friday.

Yongshun Bu, 44, and his motorized bike entered the westbound lane at the
Manhattan end of the tunnel at 7 p.m. Thursday and was seen recklessly
riding around traffic, ignoring signs and verbal instructions to pull over,
according to Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

Bu, who was delivering Chinese food according to law enforcement sources,
was ultimately grabbed about 20 yards into the tunnel and charged with
criminal trespass.

His wrong-way trip through the tunnel caused a short traffic disruption,
but no one was hurt, officials said.

Once upon a time, TV-caused fires were big news and it was true,
due to the mass adoption of TVs, several decades ago, there were
multiple fires each day caused by TVs, so it was prudent to report
about them.
There are plenty fires caused by electrical appliances and I don't see
why an e-Bike would be much different.
Granted, the batteries can add a little to the fire, but so would the
batteries of a laptop during a fire, so I do not see why you would
not try to put it out yourself, the man probably saved his house
from much more extensive damage than just needing to replace
part of the floor and getting some smoke inhaled that he was
checked up for (I don't see any medical treatment, despite the
claim in the title of the piece)

Couple injured after electric bike sparks fire at Hampshire home

A MARRIED couple needed medical treatment when an electric bicycle caught
fire in their Hampshire home in the early hours of today.

The pair awoke to find the bike burning in the front room of their terraced
house in Kealy Road, Gosport, at 12.15am.

The man, believed to be in his early 30s tried to tackle the flames by
throwing water over the bike which was being charged at an electrical point
 at the time.

Crews from Gosport fire station arrived to find the flames already out.

They gave oxygen to the man and his wife, believed to be in her late 20s,
who were suffering from smoke inhalation.

An ambulance was called but the couple did not need hospital treatment.

The bike was completely destroyed and the fire caused 20 per cent damage to
the floor and severe smoke damage to the room.

Watch-manager Steve Bint reminded people not to fight electrical fires with
water and added: People shouldn't attempt to put it out. If it is safe to
do so people should close the door get out and call us.

Smart is famous for making great city vehicles but their problem is that the
cars are often priced extravagantly. However, when Smart announced on
launching the ForTwo Electric Drive mid-next year, it got quite a number of
people excited.

This is probably due to the fact that the consumers finally see some value
in Smart if it is to take on the mainstream EV market with the ForTwo. After
all, the superb eMPG that might come with the vehicle can cover back the
extra expenses to purchase the car.

The word is that the ForTwo Electric Drive is going to run on a 17.6kWh
lithium battery which sends the power to an electric motor which develops
74PS and 130Nm of torque. While not much, the ForTwo ED can sprint from
0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and there is a top speed of 78mph.

The icing on the cake is with the travel range that is promised to be about
76 miles in the city ...

Watch-manager Steve Bint reminded people not to fight electrical fires with
water and added: “People shouldn’t attempt to put it out. If it is safe to
do so people should close the door get out and call us.”

Why a discontinued charger that will be hard to get support or repaired?

Perhaps others can suggest an alternative 3kW charger for your 180VDC pack
(I am assuming it is Li-ion).

Brusa still offers chargers that could fit your charging needs:

A li ion battery fire is not an electrical fire. And yes you want to get the
heat out so water works well.

[EVDL] EVLN: BASF hawking 30% lighter foamed glass-fiberpaper EV materials

BASF’s Elastoflex Opens Door to Mass Produced Honeycomb Car Parts

(Smart EV)
]

According to an August 12 press release from BASF, its semi-rigid
polyurethane foam system has made it possible for the first time to
mass-produce an exterior car part featuring a honeycomb sandwich structure
with a class-A film. The foam system, Elastoflex E, was used to make the
roof for a model of the new smart fortwo – an electric vehicle. The roof
consists of a paper honeycomb and two surrounding glass fiber mats.

The roof, which is 30 percent lighter than the standard roof on the previous
model, was developed by Fehrer Composite Components, which manufactures it
in its factory in Großlangheim, Germany. Although the newer model is
lighter, BASF maintains it retains the same strength and flexural rigidity.

To make the roof, honeycomb and glass fiber mats are sprayed in a single
impregnation process with BASF’s Elastoflex E 3532 and pressed together with
a solid-colored class-A film. This causes the polyurethane system to foam up
slightly at the edge of the sandwich and creates a solid material composite
between film, reinforcing mats and paper honeycomb core.

“In contrast to conventional composite parts, in this roof module the
individual layers are not glued together in a multi-stage process, but are
instead produced in a single manufacturing step,” says Gao Kwintmeyer,
Global Purchasing Fehrer. “This is much more efficient.”

In the past, the honeycomb technology was used to make interior car parts,
such as loading floors, roof linings, and rear shelves. In order to make
exterior car parts, however, BASF had to adjust the viscosity and reactivity
of Elastoflex E to ensure it could be optimally processed in each
manufacturing step and display good adhesion properties. According to BASF,
the adjusted system guarantees uniform, thin wetting of the glass fiber mats
and will not drip.

[EVDL] EVLN: Daimler axes Smart fortwo electric drive EV

2015-08-24 Thread brucedp5 via EV

Smart axes fortwo electric drive
By Ronan Glon Aug 23rd, 2015

]

Daimler's smart division has announced it has stopped production of the
fortwo electric drive.

The company explains that demand for the electric drive (pictured) is low
but steady. However, the EV is based on the last-gen smart and building it
alongside the new third-gen model in Hambach, France, requires a costly
investment that's hard to justify for such a low-volume model.

Smart has a handful of electric drive models in its global inventory, but
the company predicts all of them will be spoken for before the year draws to
a close. After that, buyers seeking an all-electric smart will either need
to be patient or look for a used one.

Although smart is currently developing a brand new fortwo electric drive
with input from industrial partner Renault, production isn't scheduled to
start until well into the second half of next year. Until we're given a more
specific time frame, it's not too far-fetched to assume the next
battery-powered smart will be presented at next year's Paris Motor Show, and
land on our shores as a 2017 model.

What's next?
Like the model that just went out of production, the next electric drive
will be based on the tiny fortwo. Long-standing rumors indicate the
marginally bigger forfour will also spawn an EV, but smart has refused to
comment on the matter.

Thanks

any alternative solutions to the BRUSA NLG511 are welcome.
Any alternative chargers must be able to be controlled by my BMS (I am
using a BMS from elithion).
The Brusa charger NLG513 has a voltage range from 200V to 520V, whereas
I have a nominal voltage of 180V (56 cells of LiFePO4 in series, max
pack voltage is 202V).

Thanks for proposals and control solutions.

I don't spend much time in bike shops, but this is my impression too. There
seem to be plenty expensive high-end bikes for enthusiasts, but only a few

The greener areas of the US sometimes have specialty e-bike shops, and
they often sell on the internet too. A couple of examples are EVsNW in

(Incidentally, if e-bikes are allegedly illegal in NYC, how do you suppose

But again, I haven't been to a bike shop around here lately, so maybe the

I do too, and I use it! But that's off topic, so I won't say any more.

officer Eric Brozek caught up to Bu about 100 yards into the tube,
   according
to the newspaper. Police deployed a dog to sniff for explosives as a
   precaution after the incident.

The spokesman said Bu was charged with criminal trespass.
