I have had good luck with Anderson connectors also. Both the two pole large connectors as well as the PowerPole and Power Pak smaller connectors. The color coding of the two pole connectors is really great also. They can't be accidentally interconnected. Re: [EVDL] Hotel Chargers
Assuming you're traveling in a Model S what I would recommend is to open plugshare and deselect all charger options other than "Tesla (S) EV plugs." You'll see a list that's pretty much Tesla service/retail spots and hotels. It seems a lot of smaller lodges and bed and breakfast spots have Tesla plugs. Hopefully there's some in the area you are traveling through. Safe EV travels, Michael > On Apr 27, 2016, at 6:47 PM, via EVwrote: > > I'm going on a trip tomorrow and will be staying at a hotel. To some extent I defer to Bill Dube' on this, as he has obviously bought a LOT of HF tools, and I have not. However, in general I follow my father's advice and example, and buy the best tools I can afford. Many times that means buying a used tool. A used tool may cost more, sometimes a lot more, than a similar one at HF or wherever. But I figure I am getting a tool that will last me the rest of my life. I buy used not just for price, but because today a lot of midrange brand name tools are barely, if at all, better than the HF versions. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them come from the same Chinese factories. I think the problem is that the tool companies' stockholders demand big profits, the big box stores demand low-ish cost and high margin, and customers just what what's cheap. So it goes. When I'm absolutely sure I'll use the tool for only one or two jobs, I might buy a cheap one, either brand name or HF. However, I did that with a spring compressor when I changed the struts in a VW Golf in the mid-1990s, and boy did I ever regret that purchase. Bloody thing cross-threaded. I had to rent a decent spring compressor to get the crap one off and finish the job. That made me a lot more cautious. I've read posts here from folks who recommend the HF hydraulic crimpers. I recall someone saying years ago that the dies are mismarked and you have to choose by approximate fit. I don't know whether that's still true. For a while I did consider buying one anyway, but honestly I don't need one since so far my hammer crimper (E-Z-Red, I think is the brand) does just fine for what I need. Re: [EVDL] Hotel Chargers
So amusing to see Americans having language difficulties. It's usually me getting blank looks when I'm standing in my thongs and shorts asking for sauce to go on my snag. I would send a picture of the power outlet I'm looking for. On topic but in another country, we have lovely three phase 32 amp 240 volt outlets in Australia that my Tesla turns into 20kw of charging with a suitable adaptor. Or 10kw with the supplied charging cable and a bit of stuffing around. Yum! Finding them is an interesting challenge but they are often installed at places like motels for building trades to run a switchboard. Fairgrounds are turning out to have them too. They are usually only used for a couple of days a year and the municipality often hires space in them out for sports clubs and RVs so access is easier than it might otherwise be. Often you just leave cash to cover the cost of power or the powered camp site fee, whichever is more, in the honour box. I'm also aware of some guys from Perth who are about to drive across the Nullarbor to Adelaide, about two thousand miles with most of it unpopulated. They sent power outlets to road houses (service stations in the middle of nowhere that sell fuel, food and often accommodation, sometimes powered with their own massive generator) and to camping grounds. It's going to be possible to drive a Tesla from Perth to Brisbane years before Tesla finish installing superchargers. Admittedly the recharging stops add about four days to the Nullarbor trip but hey, don't we all love watching our cars charge? My two cents. Based on experience in Europe, it’s often about ensuring you have a bunch of converters/connectors, and can bend the ear of either someone who does maintenance, kitchen staff, or someone else you can befriend. Openchargemap could be one place to start, and Plugshare too. But it does depend rather on where you are. ᐧ [image: --] Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield [image: https://]about.me/aminorjourney <https://about.me/aminorjourney?promo=email_sig> On Wed, Apr 27, 2016 at 5:39 PM, John Lussmyer via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> wrote: > On Wed Apr 27 17:35:51 PDT 2016 ev@lists.evdl.org said: > >I would think hotels would be the first place you'd see chargers: it's a > great perk to advertise, if I'm stopping at hotel - I probably really need > to charge, the cost is small compared to the room charge, it makes them > look 'modern', etc. > > Cause most people traveling < 100 miles (Leaf range) aren't staying at > hotels. > > > -- > > Worlds only All Electric F-250 truck! > http://john.casadelgato.com/Electric-Vehicles/1995-Ford-F-250 > > ___ > UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub > http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org > Read EVAngel's EV News at http://evdl.org/evln/ > Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA ( > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA) > > -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Cripe - evidently my email keeps reverting to rich text - sorry try again: jeez... I tried calling Hilton to see how to tell which of their hotels offer charging since by Googling around I saw they had some press releases about adding charging stations to their hotels. -- condensed version--- " Hello, I want to find out how to tell which of your hotels has EV charging" " You need parking?" " No, charging for my electric vehicle." "You want to see if there is a charge to park?" "No, I have an electric car and want to stay at a hotel that offers charging" -- conversation about dates, number of guests, etc -- "There is -some hotel- available" " Do they offer EV charging" " Sorry I don't know what you mean, but you can call the hotel" "Thanks, bye." I thought EVs were a bit more mainstream now, but I guess not. I'm not sure if I want to spend the night calling hotels and explaining what an electric car is. I am surprised though that hotels list incredible details about breakfast items, office supplies, safety equipment, but I see none that show EV charging much less allow sorting by that. It's so easy to add and so useful. -SteveS ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Read EVAngel's EV News at http://evdl.org/evln/ Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Motels very often have one or more outdoor 120 vac outlet somewhere. Ask permission ahead of time, and ask again when you arrive, if you can plug in. Bring a lng 14 gauge cord. Bring your 120 volt opportunity "charger". You can also ask for a first floor room near parking and hang your log extension cord out the window when you are in your room at night. It is also useful to bring a padlock to secure your opportunity charger to your wheel: http://daryllafferty.com/CableLock.jpg Bill D. Interesting. I was going to buy some stuff from them awhile back, but decided against it after going online and reading reviews. Lots of folks thought they were junk, so it's good to see a contrary opinion. Great info Chris... and it should be of note to all of us that are interested in EV's. The Koch bros are not interested in EV's, in fact they are opposed to EV's and actively fund companies, individuals etc that are opposed to EV's. Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Leaf-now ad sez why wait for Tesla-3
I looked at one last weekend. It was 39,000 not 35,000 and it's a Leaf not a Tesla. When are the going to realize it matters how you treat customers? Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone Original message From: brucedp5 via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> Date: 4/27/16 2:31 AM (GMT-07:00) To: ev@lists.evdl.org Subject: [EVDL] EVLN: Leaf-now ad sez why wait for Tesla-3 http://www.hybridcars.com/nissan-leaf-ad-takes-a-shot-at-tesla-model-3/ Nissan Leaf Ad Takes a Shot At Tesla Model 3 April 22, 2016 Jeff Cobb [images http://www.hybridcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Leaf_advert-668x409.jpg (leaf ad - why wait) http://www.hybridcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/tesla-model-3-tax-incentives-668x4091.jpg The industry has not seen anything like this. Controversial ads play on the belief that any press is good press ] If you are one of the 400,000 people or so who’ve plunked down $1,000 to reserve Tesla’s 215-mile range $35,000 Model 3, Nissan has good news for you: You don’t have to wait! Of course many already knew that of the Japanese automaker’s electric car now being nursed along in its sixth model year and currently offering 107 miles range for just over $35,000 – less $4,000 cash back – but Nissan’s ad campaign makes the point just the same. “Why wait when you can drive an all-electric Leaf now?” poses Nissan’s advert launched in today’s New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. “And why drop $1,000 to stand in line when you can get $4,000 cash back and best-in-class range?” True is it is an EV now, and leasing is an option as well. Also true is in six-eight months from now, if one is thinking of getting an EV sooner, the 2017 Chevy Bolt will be available with over 200 miles range. Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn has also said to expect a second generation Leaf with competitive range, though no images or other details of this have yet been revealed. Since coming to market for 2011, the Leaf has become the world’s best-selling plug-in vehicle with over 200,000 sold – about half of the Model 3’s reservation list. It received a range increase in 2013 from an original 73 miles to 84, and in 2016 its range was upped to 107 for the SV and SL trim packages, with 84-miles range still specified for the base S model. Last year the Leaf’s U.S. sales declined 43 percent to 17,269 units sold. During 2016’s first quarter, sales have declined 28 percent to 2,931 units. The company has long offered relatively inexpensive lease deals, now mentions 0 percent APR for up to 72 months, $4,000 cash back, and also offers “No Charge to Charge” providing free public access charging for two years. And perhaps to capitalize on the mind share of all the people looking to Tesla, its ad chides the California upstart and people waiting. Tesla has said the vehicle could get here by late 2017, others have suggested 2018, 2019, and analysts have even projected some standing in line now won’t get their Model 3 before 2020. But even if Tesla defies the bearish and releases the car early, Nissan says it can deliver instant gratification. “No one should have any reservations about getting an electric car today,” says Nissan of its car available now. Re: [EVDL] Harbor Freight tools (was: J1772. Solder or crimp?)
I purchased a Harbor Freight flux core wire welder several years back with a coupon for about $100, about a 90 amp unit. I could not afford anything else. I thought I would build a few projects, destroy it, and buy something better. I have built a trailer, accessories for a mini-excavator and a skid steer loader, and various other projects. The welder just will not die. It uses 3# spools of flux wire. I was able to massage a few parts and squeeze in a 20# reel of wire. It is more economical, and does not stop your project to load another spool. However, the welder is now about 17# heavier due to the wire. I now have a larger welder mig/tig? with plasma cutting ability that I have not set up yet because the Harbor Freight starter welder won't die. Some problems are ok to have. (Ok the plasma cutting requires a LOT of ATTENTION to SAFETY - enough said) Be safe!! http://www.hybridcars.com/nissan-leaf-ad-takes-a-shot-at-tesla-model-3/ Nissan Leaf Ad Takes a Shot At Tesla Model 3 April 22, 2016 Jeff Cobb [images http://www.hybridcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Leaf_advert-668x409.jpg (leaf ad - why wait) http://www.hybridcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/tesla-model-3-tax-incentives-668x4091.jpg The industry has not seen anything like this. [EVDL] EVLN: New Quebec.ca homes> Electric car charging outlets required
http://www.cjad.com/cjad-news-human-interest/2016/04/20/electric-car-charging-outlets-to-be-required-in-all-new-homes-report Electric car charging outlets to be required in all new homes: report 4/20/2016 James Foster [image] (EV charging) Would buying a home with a pre-installed electric car charging outlet persuade you to give up your gas guzzler? The Quebec government sure hopes so. According to the Journal de Montreal the Couillard government will soon require all new homes built in Quebec to have a 240 volt external outlet for recharging electric vehicles. Adding the charging port during construction would only cost a couple hundred dollars, as opposed to a charging station after the fact, which can set you back nearly $1,000. If you rent your home the government wants to make sure you can go green too. According to the report, the government plans to force owners of rental properties to offer tenants a charging station, the measure includes all existing buildings and not just new ones being built. To help ease the backlash from rental property owners, the government is expected to offer a $600 grant to install the charge terminal. The Quebec Liberals hope to have 100,000 electric cars on Quebec roads by 2020. There are a little over 8,000 right now. [EVDL] EVLN: 'EV' version of Honda Clarity to garner CARB credits& easy recharging @home
'fcv entrenched automakers succumb to physics and go EV' (You’d have to be an imbecile not to get this) % fcv discussions are OT on the evdl % http://blog.caranddriver.com/honda-will-re-enter-the-ev-race-in-2017-with-an-all-electric-version-of-its-clarity/ Honda Will Re-Enter the EV Race in 2017 with an All-Electric Version of its Clarity April 21, 2016 Joseph Capparella [images http://blog-admin.cddev.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Honda_Clarity_FCV_front.jpg (Honda Clarity) http://blog-admin.cddev.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Honda_Clarity_FCV_rear.jpg ] After discontinuing the Fit EV in 2014, Honda will throw its hat into the EV ring once again next year with an all-electric, battery-powered version of its Clarity eco-mobile. The so-called Clarity Electric will follow the hydrogen-powered Clarity Fuel Cell set to go on sale at some California dealerships later this year, and a Clarity Plug-In Hybrid variant will arrive in the U.S. later in 2017. Other than the assertion that the Clarity Electric will be a battery-powered five-seat hatchback, the only details Honda has shared so far are that it will come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of active-safety technologies and offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities as options. Info on the battery pack, driving range, and price are anybody’s guess. Honda did say that sales of the EV will start in California before expanding to other states based on demand. Expect the nine states that follow California’s zero-emissions vehicle regulations (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont) to be next on the list. We know that the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid will be sold in all 50 states by the end of 2017 and that Honda expects this gas-electric version to be the top seller among the three Clarity variants. The plug-in has an estimated all-electric driving range of more than 40 miles, with its gasoline engine stepping in after that to function as a range extender. Both the plug-in and EV versions of the Clarity are sure to be cheaper than the California-only Clarity Fuel Cell (pictured), which bears a purchase price of about $60,000 but will be offered for lease at just under $500 a month. Honda isn’t the only automaker to install multiple earth-friendly drivetrains in a single body style; Hyundai is doing the same thing with its Ioniq range of hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and EV hatchbacks. And there’s always the venerable Toyota Prius and its various gas-electric powertrains and body styles, too. Keep an eye out for how Honda will put its own spin on this idea when we find out more about the Clarity lineup later this year. [EVDL] Longest UK distances between charging points revealed

North Devon has the longest average distances between public charging points, according to Department for Transport statistics. The RAC said there was "some way to go" before users would be cured of "range anxiety". The average distance between charging points in England was 3.8 miles (6km). It compares with an average distance between petrol and diesel filling stations of one mile. In North Devon, the average distance between public charging points can be between 18 and 47 miles. Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria has average distances of up to 37 miles (60km). The RAC says the furthest distance between petrol stations in the UK is 19 miles, for drivers in Applecross, West Scotland. However, electric car drivers in Southwark, London, will find a public charging point every 97m (106 yds). There are parts of Manchester and Newcastle-upon-Tyne where the average distance to a charge point is only 193m (211 yds). Rise in use According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 17,000 hybrid and electric cars left UK showrooms in March 2016, compared with 1,354 in the same month in 2006. Go Ultra Low, the joint government and car industry campaign to get drivers to switch to electric vehicles, said year-on-year sales were up 23%, with more than 115 electric cars registered every day in the first quarter of 2016, equivalent to one every 13 minutes. Charging vs fuelling 8,500 UK [ice] filling stations 3,904 UK public charging point locations 1 mile average distance between [ice] filling stations 3.8 miles average distance between charging points 106.41p Price per litre for unleaded petrol 96p Typical cost of charging an electric car Sources: RAC, Zap Map, DfT, thechargingpoint.com RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: "It should be remembered that one of the big benefits of electric vehicles is the ability for motorists to charge up before they leave home. "But once they've left, they currently rely on charging points on major roads and in city centres as it is along these roads where the greatest investment in charging infrastructure has so far taken place. "Coverage away from major roads is still patchy, but that is to be expected given where the greatest number of electric vehicles are likely to be. Having more charging points available will be essential in helping drivers overcome so-called "range anxiety", where they fear running out of power before they can recharge." Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low, said: "Potential electric vehicle (EV) buyers can be encouraged by the fact that there are already more than 10,000 publicly-accessible charge points located across the UK and many more new units are being installed in urban and rural areas in the coming months." Dale Vince, founder of green energy supplier Ecotricity and charging network the Electric Highway, said drivers were getting more miles per charge as technology improved. He said: "In the last couple of years we've seen improvements in charging times; coming down from several hours to 20 minutes - and improvements in vehicle range; from a typical 100 to more like 200 today."
