I believe that even Vectrix uses this principle on their electric
motorbike sized scooter: twist the handlebar grip forward to
accelerate, twist backwards to regen and stop. Use the handlebar brake
levers if regen is not sufficient.
The BMW EVs of a couple years ago had one-pedal-drive in the
accelerator. My 1994 US Electricar had this from the beginning where
you select the regen level by putting the gear selector in 1,2 or
Drive and the Dolphin inverter gets told to either utilize a hard
regen, mild regen or light regen. I normally use [1] which gives me
hard regen and this allows 1 pedal drive with just the accelerator for
all my commute except when there are surprises.
As others have said, there are installers of hand-controls to make
vehicles suitable for drivers with physical limitations.

Gail, have you ever seen or driven an antique EV, like the Detroit or
Baker Electric? They used a tiller for steering, and a twist-grip for
the throttle on the tiller bar. Rotating the twist-grip forward
accelerated ahead; rotating it backwards used regen to slow down, and
would then even reverse if you turned it back far enough. They could be
driven, steered, and stopped with one hand.

My very first on-road EV test drive was a Detroit Electric. It was very
easy to control. I've always felt that was a perfectly viable way to
control a car.

Any shop that sets up motor vehicles with hand controls should be
able to set up a Polaris GEM or any other low speed vehicle for
braking (and acceleration if also needed) by hand.

Honda Motor Co.'s ultramini electric vehicle MC-?, which was used in a
car-sharing experiment in Saitama between 2014 and 2016, is seen in 2014. |

Honda Motor Co. on Thursday revealed a plan to develop ultramini electric
vehicles that it hopes will become the go-to mode of transportation for the
elderly and other people instead of conventional smaller automobiles.

The one- or two-seater vehicles will run at low speeds, reducing the chance
of causing traffic accidents. The announcement came on the heels of a recent
series of major car accidents involving elderly drivers.

“We want to help advance mobility and living, and provide all people with
the joy of broadened possibilities in their everyday lives,” Honda President
Takahiro Hachigo said.

Among the vehicles being developed by Honda is a three-wheeled electric
vehicle suitable for short- and middle-distance travel. Honda has yet to
decide when to release the vehicles.

In the field of self-driving technology, Honda aims to develop an automobile
that can be driven hands free on expressways, except for in emergency
situations.

The vehicle will automatically maintain an appropriate position in traffic
lanes and a proper distance from automobiles around it, and will be able to
switch lanes without the driver holding the steering wheel.

control of it using alarms, warnings on the monitor screen and a vibrating
driver’s seatbelt.

Honda also plans to add a feature that will guide the vehicle to park
automatically at the side of the road if the driver is detected to be
falling asleep.
