Re: [Evolution] Connector Upgrade Conflict

2004-09-08 Thread Wise, Jeremey
No RSVP on this post but also, a new set up updates came out which again
try to install but fail on dependency. Should I download manually the
conflicting package and force and install?

input as to what I can do to fix it. I would really like to try the
fixed version but wish to keep as pristine SuSE 9.1 with Red-Carpet

Attached is the only output I can find to get which shows details of the

to run red-carpet update so it can output errors such as this one so I
 can post to the group?

When the crash dialog pops up, click Inform the Developers (or Submit
a bug report or something like that if you have an older version of
GNOME). If you don't get an option like that, install the bug-buddy
 package and try again.

It moved. Click the Exchange button, and it's in the Tools menu.
Tool menu has the following buttons
Settings, filters, create from message, virtual folder, create virtual
folder from message, subscribe to folder, pilot link settings.

That's in the Mail component. You have to click the Exchange button
first, to get to the useless Exchange view rather than the Mail view.

Just to fill out this thread to conclusion this bug was posted and as
far as the last two days is working fine now.

Thanks. this actually explains it better.

I tried to explain this more than once... ;)

You even can set Forwarding as Attachment as default forwarding action
 in the Settings.

  Just for my understanding...
Was this changed in 1.5 from 1.4.6.

Dunno when exactly the attachment handling changed. But IIRC it where
only minor changes, most of the logic still is the same as it was for a
 couple of versions.

I am just a little use to the way
Outlook did things and I thought that 1.4.6. use to do it in a format
where text forward/replies were inline while attachments always moved
with the mail. This is apparently not (no longer) the case. Why is
  that?

I already expressed my opinion about attachment handling...

It doesn't make any sense at all to resend attachments when replying --
cause the one you are replying to just sent you the very same
attachment. So why would I want to send it back?

When forwarding inline/quoted, the origin of attachments simply is not
clear. Whereas forwarding as attachment leaves the original mail
entirely unaltered and isn't ambiguous about the origin of any
 attachment.

Forwarding as Attachment is the way to go, IMHO.

 ...guenther

This clarified what I needed. It makes sense once it is explained. Hold
over thought process from my MS Outlook days.

[Evolution] Forward Attachments

2004-08-20 Thread Wise, Jeremey
It would seem that I can no longer forward email which have attachments
to also include their attachments. IE I have a request sent to me with
two Excel spreadsheets which I can open in OpenOffice. When I try Reply
to all, Reply or Forward their are no attachments listed.

Any thoughts?

  2) I was out of the Office traveling all last week and went to set my
out-of-office reply (corporate standard) and could not. I thought I had
tested that with the 1.46 attempt I did and it worked fine but seems 1.5
no longer has that (or it has moved).

It moved. Click the Exchange button, and it's in the Tools menu.
Tool menu has the following buttons
Settings, filters, create from message, virtual folder, create virtual
folder from message, subscribe to folder, pilot link settings.

I also poked around all the other menues. It us to be a button under
the settings dialog box but I can no longer find it.

Also on that note is their a way
to make sure that all my filters run PRIOR to it replying with the Out-
of-Office messages so my user groups don't get the spam reply?

I believe the default Exchange out-of-office rule only replies to
messages that explicitly list you as a To or Cc. But I'm not totally
sure about that. I don't know what order it runs relative to other
filter rules either, but it's not something we can control.
I will try and post... once I find where the above menu option
disappeared to:) If I spam the list with out-of office ...apologizes in
advance

  3) The last thing is contacts-notes. I put a lot of notes in that
section as I file stuff by company (for example NOvell would be the
contact with all my tech contact people and their contact info as
notes). In Evolution 1.4.6 it was fine as it has a nice sized window for
displaying this information, now it is completely none usable. I have
tried to find a way to make it resize the pane, or resort the contact
way of doing things but it does not work.

Ugh. I hadn't seen this. I would say file a bug, but I don't know if
 anything will change.
Attached is a screenshot. As you can see I have a lot of notes which use
to be readable. If I could just have it resize the pane It would work.
but as of right now I am stuck. I would send you a print sceeen of it
but that aparently is not trivial in SuSE 9.1.. still researching.

Many times I try to cut and paste info I hold their and it does not
  work. Any thoughts?

Cut and paste should absolutely work. If that's broken, that could still
potentially be fixed before 2.0. (If you file a bug soon.)

[Evolution] Bug Trace -Lookup Hangs.

2004-08-05 Thread Wise, Jeremey
I am having an issue where lookups to exchange will halt Evolution. I
tried to submit a bug but don't know if it took. The resolution is to do
a evolution-15 --force-shutdown then I can do a lookup for the person.
It works a few times then hangs. It sometimes hangs the whole desktop
(aka Ctl+alt+bkspace needed).

Question: How do I start evolution to get you guys the trace output
needed to help debug this? Right now I took a guess and am doing an

[Evolution] 1.4.6 to 1.5 Migration Experiance

2004-07-29 Thread Wise, Jeremey
Just wanted to post my experiances in transition from stable 1.4.6 to
1.5. I had a lot of little issues with SuSe 9.0 and figured I would try
jumping to 9.1 before I started complaining. Nothing major but things
that make life with Linux less then elegant.

During that process I found the OS to be much more stable and user
friendly. (On a side note SuSe's network configuration interface is
still broken). I loved red-carpet and also needed it to do the Evolution
pieces so I used it right away to get things loaded for mail. I figured
I would try 1.5 to see how it did. A couple of my notes and comments.

1) Install was great. red-carpet realy helps out that process.

2) Post install it took me only a few minutes to find out how to import
all my 1.4.6 mail (copy of my old hard drives /home/'username'/evolution
direcotry)into 1.5. evolution-1.5 --force-migrate. This imported all
my mail but did not import my mail server settings and preferances. I
remember their being a post about this but could not find it. I would
recommend their be some kind of migrationn how-to posted. When 1.4.6
to 2.x goes live. Maybe even a wizard from red-carpet?

3) The new interface is very nice. I would like the flexability to
shrink the bottom left buttons (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Tasks,
Exchange) as I have a lot of mailbxes I need to see open and all the
side space I can get is a help when I have to sort emails.

4) Spell checking does not work again. I had this issue with 1.4.6 and
it was an issue of needing aspell-en which red-carpet did not install
but even once I found my old email on that and installed it, it still
does not work.

evolution1.5-1.5.91.0.200407250732-0.snap.ximian.9.1
evolution-data-server-0.0.96.0.200407250732-0.snap.ximian.9.1
libjasper-1.700.5-58
aspell-0.50.5-35
aspell-en-0.51.0-285

5) Their seem to still be some emails that show as having attachments
that do do not alow me to 'detatch' them. The email size indicates their
are attachments. I can forward it on an example if it is of use. I have
not found a pattern to help give direction (pdf in the one case).

5) As for stability (their were some postings about issues with it on
9.1) I have had no issues. It has worked flawlessly on the stability
front.

Thanks to all those who spend their days and nights coding and fixing
bugs. Your efforts are apreciated and are definatly worth it. I have had
quite a few people looking at evolution as an Outlook replacement
because of the quality of the product.

I will assume that your issue is not getting Evo 1.4 to work (if that is
the case... install red-carpet) but to setup out-of office autoreply.

In Evolution their is a menu option up top called Tools -Settings
-Their will be a list of icons on the left hand pane. Scroll down to
the very bottom to the one called Out of Office. Click on this to
display the settings options in the right hand pane. Input the desired
message in and then set whether you are in or out. Finally, click
Apply then Close. Test this by sending yourself an email.

[Evolution] 1.5 Connector Please -IMAP Folder Transfers

2004-06-08 Thread Wise, Jeremey
I don't mean to be a pest but I have this one kind of important issue
with Evolution that caused me great consternation today. My mailbox ran
out of space as I forgot to expunge my deleted folder and so I got
some messages that I was over my quota. Problem was that once evolution
starts it tries to get my backlog of emails and send the ones that did
not complete in sending when I closed it out.

My only recourse is to move my designs which I archive in email out to
my Local Folder so they are removed from my mailbox. In MS Outlook
this was not an issue. I had an archive rule which took my folder
Designs and all sub folders. If they had not been touched for 60days
would automatically move them into my PST file. Issue is that I can not
drag-n-drop these folders from my [EMAIL PROTECTED]
folder into Local Folders\Archives\Designs. It would be nice to have a
script to do it but even manual at this point is better than nothing. I
have to re-create each folder and drag each email group for that folder.
Questions:
1) Based on emails. 1.5 has this feature but I have to use Connector so
I am stuck with 1.4. Is 1.5 in a state I can test Connector?
2) Is it possible to move the folders directly. ie cp ~/evolution.
to get the job done or will this muck up something?
3) Are their any plans for any auto-archiver?
4) It would seem that due to Connector having to 'sync' with Echange
their would be no possibility to have a filter that moves ALL email into
Local Folders then reruns filters to spit out email into user-group
folders, trash, spam. Whereby I can go offline and still have my
corporate emails. Is this correct?

PS: Is their a way that I can have separate signatures based to whom the
email is destined. ie. I like having my full info default filled in for
most all my corp email but user groups I would like to pull my phone and
info (forgot to a couple of times and started getting calls from LUG
members:)

[Evolution] Printing Letter vs A4 with KDE SuSE 9.0

2004-06-01 Thread Wise, Jeremey
After seeing seveal times about printing issues and Evolution I decided
to find a solution to the issue. I worked over the weekend and figured I
would post my notes.

Setup: SuSE 9.0, KDE 3.1, Evolution 1.4, CUPS, HP Jetdirect Print
servers,

Issue: Evolution would only print A4 paper size and though you would
tell KDE that it was to use US Letter Evolution would still default to
A4. This meant that EVERY print would require a manual change of the
paper type to Letter from A4. The result would be that the job would
enter into the buffer of the printer and then disapear.

Cause: The issue (at least in my case) was that the print driver
specific to the print device was defaulting to A4. KDE was passing the
data to CUPS. CUPS was relying on the print driver to format the page
definitions.

Solution:
1) CUPS has changed security settings and so you have to open up rights
to allow the ability change print driver settings. (Per googled
conversation -
http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Mar/3240.html
2) Open Print Manager ('Menu'-Utilities-Printing). Select your
printer. Select Properties tab. Select the Driver Icon. Click the
Change button. Assuming you have the correct printer selected click
Next. Their will be two options Test and Settings. Select
Settings and all the avalable options for that printer type will
become available (ie. in the case of my HP4050 I had duplex, toner
settings, etc...) Their will be a section called General in which you
will see the page size as A4. Click on it and select Letter. Select
OK and Finish. (if you get prompted for a password see 1) for
details.)
3) I restarted CUPS ('/etc/rc.d/cups restart') and Evolution. Printing
now defaults to Letter.

My $.02

As part (lurker) on the qMail user list and a Mail admin in my own rite
I would have to agree that in today's mail environment bounces are of
little value and are more often a qualification for immediate drop.

Too much spam..

As example... one of my home domains was online all of two days and it
was being spammed various systems out their 'guessing' usernames in an
attempt to find another entry for their list. I rsvped to one of them
for the fun of it and within days that user id had made it onto dozens
of other spam servers who were then sending spam to that user. Turned
out it was not such a great idea in that I get more spam on that one
user then I do on all my real accounts where the policy is drop it on
the floor for all no 'white-list' mail sources.

this is a totally wasteful feature to have. it does nothing but kill

original spammer spoofs someone's email address and you hit bounce?
well, now *that* user gets hit with extra spam... creating a world of
even more pain and suffering. Besides, do you *really* think they pay

I noticed this issue also, but the
reverse. I had my system crash about ten times in a row due to SMB mount timing

files being left open so I figured what the heck rm rf /tmp
KDE started ok then but evolution said all my configuration data was
missing. I thought all the users data and info was stored in

/tmp has evolution directories for each user.

[Evolution] Final Leap

2004-05-14 Thread Wise, Jeremey
Ok, I have used evolution for several weeks now as my production system.
I just received my new laptop and finished installing SuSE 9.0 on it and
have a few questions and looking for direction.

1) SuSE 9.0 has EVO 1.4 support. Is 1.5x worth the jump or a better way
to put it.. is it stable enough for a person of reasonable technical
savy-ishness?

2) I am finding that many of my emails were saved and archived into
offline PO with Outlook 2003 and I will have to boot that up and do some
form of import. My thought was to drag them back into a new Archive
folder but their are a couple of issues with that.
a) I have a 50MB limit on my mailbox and with diagrams and such we are
looking at about 350MB. That is a lot of copy-up copy-down.
b) To archive them on my laptop for referenced or searching I will need
to create the archive folder in my Local Folders mailbox which stores
all contents in ~/evolution. It appears that mail storage is in a single
file (similar to what Outlook did). What impact will this have on
searching based on key words in the subject or body? (aka Outlook was
next to impossible to locate historical data or find notes on an old
case or issue).
c) Is their an import tool from an Outlook Archive?
*** Maybe the issue here is that I still do not understand the function
and resouce ability of VFolders I have lurked on the list for some
time and they apear to be only usefull for building searching / views of
emails but can someone point me to VFolder 101 Primer

3) My end goal is to have all inbound email for my Exchange user come in
and be moved offline after being sorted. I would aSSume that this
would mean moving all email from my [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailbox to
my Local Folders mailbox. Would this mean that I create a rule that
move * to folder Local Folders\inbox then run rules to sort?

Thanks for all who have helped in the migration and the whole process. I
hope to be a useful participant in the user group once I get Linux as a
Corportate Desktop under my belt.

[Evolution] Various Details

2004-05-11 Thread Wise, Jeremey
I have continued my quest to work with Evolution to make it fully
functional for my needs. Here are a few issues that I would like to
resolve to assist this process.

1) My calendar pop-ups do not contain any details about what the subject
is about. I know their was a bit of conversation about this earlier but
I did not find any resolution. I am going to migrate to a new laptop in
a few weeks, will going to 1.5 be the fix for this?

2) I have poked around and tried to figure out how to set Evolution to
us US Letter paper as the default but have not made any progress. This
is the only application that defaults to it.

3) In viewing folders and mailboxes is their a way to have all threads
display collapsed by default. For the user groups I participate in it
makes parsing the head subject or reviewing historical emails much
easier.

4) I know this is a likely off topic but I am still looking for a way to
integrate Mozilla seamlessly into Evolution. I am trying to get it to
open up a new session using the 'default' session and initiate a new
tab.

5) Back when I had to use MS Lookout my signature would aways apply and
would apply right after my typed message (actually my signature was put
in prior to my typing; the curser would always be started above it). I
have gotten some complaints back from people that my header info (aka
contact info) is missing. Personally I think they can get over it but my
manager has told me to see if I can fix it. It is corporate policy to
have my signature always attached so If I could force all emails to have
it by default that would save me the effort of having to remember to
apply it.

Anyway, below are some notes on how to change the browser even without
using the Gnome Control Center. You will need a working gconf though.

 ...guenther

Setting default browser using *gconftool* (Gnome 2.0/2.2)
 -

You will need GConf (and the gconf daemon running) to set this. If you
do *not* have the Gnome Control Center installed, there is a way to set
 this using GConf directly:

See, which values are stored in that sub-tree. Save the output to a
file, so you can revert to those settings!

 $ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/unknown
  command = mozilla %s
  need-terminal = false
  enabled = true

Now, this should enter all those values (at least, they work for me):

 $ gconftool-2 --set --type=string /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/unknown/command
 'mozilla %s'
 $ gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/unknown/need-terminal
 false
 $ gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/unknown/enabled true

Setting default browser using *gconftool* (Gnome 2.4)
 -

This is basically the as above, just some GConf key change:

The relevant key on Gnome 2.4 has changed, but is pretty much similar.
Simply substitute unknown by http, especially in the commands to set
 the values.
  /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http

Also, the https branch may be useful. However, this is *not* set using
 the GUI method mentioned above.

Re: [Evolution] Can't run Gnome Control Centre

2004-05-05 Thread Wise, Jeremey
I figured it out thanks to Guenther. It was a path issue. my user did
not have /usr/local/mozilla in the path. I spent the last few hours
fighting why when I added entries into /etc/profile they were not
effecting env settings for PATH. I 'believe' the issue was that my test
for the new path being parse was based on opening a new xterm which I
was ASSuming would parse the new /etc/profile. It apparently does not.
After reboot it started to work.

Thanks,

[Evolution] IMAP Deleting Email

2004-05-05 Thread Wise, Jeremey
In the job I have I work as a consultant who watches a 'queue' which is
an email box. A request for a design or help will come into the Exchange
mailbox and I (or any number of other consultants) will review the
request then pull it into our personal mailbox to work on it. I just
found out that since I moved to Evolution when I go into the mailbox and
pull an emial it is removed on my client but all the other consultants
see the emial as having been read by me but it is still their. The only
way I can remove the emial is to open Outlook and delete the emial. My
evolution setup is as follows. As I can only have one exchange account
I have it setup for my emial addresss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) but
the other mailboxes are setup as IMAP connections. I have tried copying
the email and then telling it to delete, forwarding it, or my prefered,
drag and drop. Again, it shows up as having been removed in Evolution
but not for all the other Exchange users.

Any thoughts?

No, 389 is the port. Link below kind of touches on the topic (google is

Are you getting authentication to work? ie. it prompts for password once
without stating that it is using anonymous.

[Evolution] Spell Check -KDE Evolution SuSE 9.0

2004-05-04 Thread Wise, Jeremey
Trying to work out another Evolution 'feature'. As you probably already
noticed Spelling is not one of my stronger suites. I have googled and
did some searching to find out why/ how to get spelling to work within
evolution but not come up with much. I have SuSE 9.0 and KDE (SuSE
default). When I purchased Ximian and installed it it instlled
gnome-spell2-1.0.5-45.ximian.8.2 instead of the SuSE recomended
gnome-spell2-0.5-9.1 (lists it as a conflict). What do I have to do to
start troubleshooting spelling.

PS: I find it interesting that SuSE, one of the bigest distros backing
KDE now a Novell product, who also owns Ximian (Evolution), has so many
incompatabilites. HTML link, spelling, printing, etc My $.02

[Evolution] Exchange Rules

2004-05-03 Thread Wise, Jeremey
Continuing my migration from XP to Linux / Evolution. I created about
ten rules for sorting incoming emails from various user groups into
different folders. Once I migrated to Evolution I have added a few user
groups (this one being one of them) but do not see the old rules show up
whereby I can modifiy them. Example: my local LUG(s) had a rule to move
all their emails into the LUG folder. Now one of the LUG groups have
changed their group name structure. I now need to modify the rule to
break out the different groups but the mail keeps getting parsed prior
to evolution getting to it. Is the only resolution to boot my old XP and
remove all rules then rebuild them in Evolution?

Pardon my being a whiner but doesn't this make Evolution as an Exchange
replacement rather broken. I puchased Evolution under the pretense that
I could replace all major functionality. Being able to query to whom in
corporate the message will be going to is rather critical in nature.

Now that I am done ranting: Is it (or has someone) build a local
OpenLDAP server and connection from it to AD, then pointed Evolution to
the local Open LDAP service for name lookup? Based on my limited RTFM it
seems this not only can be done but is the only route to get Linux to
speak to AD (ie not just modifications to a client but having to
impliment the full server on each host).

Input greatly apreaciated.

Evolution only speaks the IETF blessed standard protocols. AD is not
an IETF protocol, it's a proprietary Microsoft product (it's not a
protocol afaik). AD is accessed via the proprietary Exchange protocol
(which is not publicly documented and would be a royal pita to reverse
engineer). Connector works with Exchange only when Exchange opens up
the WebDAV interfaces. Perhaps Connector can talk to your AD, but
 Evolution certainly cannot.

Still migrating from Windows XP. Still a few glitches.

1)I get a lot of emails where their are urls included. In Evolution

When I click on it it just sits their. Poked around in menus and in

issue but their does not seem to be an equivalency in kde:

2) I have created a printer for my sysem (HPLJ 4050 on Jetdirect PS)
Printer works fine in all other applications BUT evolution. Job is
submited and sent to the printer. Printer buffer shows data coming in
but then never prints (buffer flushed). If I cut and paste the messages
into any other application (Ooo or kwrite) they print fine. I have tried
kmail and it works. Any suggestions? I would normaly say KDE or CUPS (in
that it gets to the printer then dies, if it wasn't for the consistancy
of the error.

[Evolution] LDAP Exchange Queries

2004-04-29 Thread Wise, Jeremey
Just broke down and purchased Ximian Evolution (on faith that it will do

Trying to get LDAP lookup to work. Corp is Exchange 2000 mixed mode.

Structure is [EMAIL PROTECTED] for email with the old account
type being [EMAIL PROTECTED] (due to corp change of name).

So the server is mailserver.pios.com I referanced that when I did the
key import and it pulled the GC server as LDAP.pios.com so I left that.

Mail works.. no name lookup so I figured I needed to add an LDAP server.
Put in LDAP.pios.com for server with name being CN=wisej,DC=pios,DC=com
and it displays several 'support base' options.

The username definition must be wrong becuse it keeps prompting for the
password. I have tried email as the account type (both old and new emial
addresses).

I have tried many variations of CN=DC=. to find out what it should
be. Any experiance or direction out their?

PS: I have alsoe tried variations on the definitions listed when I load
Outlook and check my account properties. Such as
X400;c=US;p=PIOS;o=EXHANGE;s=Wise;g=Jeremey; etc...

Thanks,
