Re: [ewg] rdma/cm: revert associating an RDMA device when binding to loopback
Open MPI also now checks for 127.0.0.1/8 and skips them. This behavior will be included in the upcoming Open MPI v1.4.2 (possibly within a few weeks?) and Open MPI v1.5.0. Two followup questions: 1. Is this now the recommended way to find all the IP interfaces that support RDMA: - loop over all local IP addresses - if 127.0.0.1/8, skip - try to rdma_bind_addr() - if it succeeds and verbs ptr is != NULL, it's an RDMA device (I believe Steve Wise proposed adding an API function to just return a list of IP addresses of RDMA devices a while back; it was rejected, which is why either we use the try-to-rdma_bind_addr() approach) 2. Before Sean backed out the localhost behavior, when you rdma_addr_bind(127.0.0.1), what did the id-verbs pointer correspond to? Re: [ewg] rdma/cm: disallow loopback address for iwarp devices
Sorry -- I missed many of these mails today due to mail filtering (don't ask). FWIW: - I'm not opposed to adding LOOPBACK checks into OMPI to avoid this problem (I'm waiting for a patch, actually). I'm just saying that we're not going to get a release out immediately with this fix. Our next release was scheduled to be 1.4.2, and it is still at least several weeks away. So allowing this in 2.6.33 would be Bad because a) we know it breaks OMPI, and b) OMPI can't get a release out immediately to fix the issue. - There are customers who are using RDMA CM with IB (e.g., Sandia with their Mesh/IB routing stuff). - I see the following in rdma_bind_addr(3): - DESCRIPTION Associates a source address with an rdma_cm_id. The address may be wildcarded. If binding to a specific local address, the rdma_cm_id will also be bound to a local RDMA device. - What RDMA device is bound to when you use 127.0.0.1? I'm not 100% sure, but I think that this might be where we got the rationale that we didn't need additional LOOPBACK tests in OMPI... (if anyone else agrees with this interpretation, then it's at least one argument that allowing binding to LOOPBACK devices *is* a change in semantics, and therefore should be treated extremely carefully) On Feb 8, 2010, at 4:16 PM, Steve Wise wrote: Sean Hefty wrote: IMO 127.0.0.1 should be for SW loopback, not HW RDMA loopback. I disagree, but what does it matter? So, we add a 'software' loopback that uses 127.0.0.1. Openmpi still wouldn't work. I guess that's true. I will commit to get the fix in openmpi asap. If we don't care if the fix is in the kernel or user space, then we could add an a 'disable-loopback-support' build option to librdmacm, which can fail any attempt to bind to a loopback address. I'd rather see it removed from 2.6.33 kernel before it shipts, and then we fix openmpi, and then re-submit 127.0.0.1 support once openmpi publishes a release with its fix. See my other email that submits a potential commit to remove 127.0.0.1 support for 2.6.33. Compile it with: mpicc ring_c.c -o ring (you might need the full path to mpicc if it's not in your path?) Re: [ewg] bug 1918 - openmpi broken due to rdma-cm changes
Note that it is highly unlikely that we will release open mpi 1.4.2 in time for ofed 1.5.1. Also note that trying to bind rdma cm to all interface ip addresses was the way that we were advised by openfabrics to figure out which devices are rdma-capable. As such, it is highly desirable to get the fix transparently in rdmacm and preserve the old semantic. More specifically, it seems undesirable to change this semantic in a minor ofed point release. -jms Sent from my PDA. Cuz on a T3-only system, no hwloop... The problem sounds like it's more than just whether 127.0.0.1 is usable. That check may fix openmpi, but it sounds more like the app needs to know whether the device can actually support loopback, regardless of what addresses are used. Is this correct? What would openmpi do if there were two addresses assigned to the T3 device? It would use them and might even create two connections. Does openmpi simply bypass RDMA for all connections on the local machine? OpenMPI can be run to use hw loopback if its available. For T3 clusters, OMPI is run in a mode to use shared memory for intra-node communications. Basically, I'm not sure that this is *just* an rdma_cm issue. Although it definitely appears that some sort of change needs to be made to the rdma_cm. I think the OpenMPI rdmacm code needs to skip 127.0.0.1, in this particular case. Prior to ofed-1.5.1, however, the bind would fail and thus OpenMPI would not advertise 127.0.0.1 to its peer. I will work to get that change done. But lets also add a device attribute so the rdmacm can know if a device supports loopback. Clearly, if the rdma-cm allows binds to T3, loopback connections will fail at connect time. [ewg] New Open MPI: 1.4
I have uploaded a new Open MPI to staging.openfabrics.org and updated the latest.txt so that the nightly OFED 1.5 builds will pull from it. This new version is a ***VERY*** minor change compared to v1.3.4 (see below) and is in direct response to the GNU Libtool security alert. To be clear: the change of numbering from 1.3.4 to 1.4 *only* reflects the fact that the code has now shifted from a new features focus to a bug fix only focus. It does *not* indicate a large change in the code. The Open MPI Team, representing a consortium of research, academic, and industry partners is releasing Open MPI version 1.4 in reaction to the GNU Libtool 2.2.6b security update release (see http://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2009-3736 for more details). The Open MPI v1.4 release closes a potential security vulnerability associated with the embedded version of GNU Libtool used in the Open MPI v1.3.x series. The *only* change between Open MPI v1.3.4 and Open MPI v1.4 is that we used GNU Libtool 2.2.6b to build Open MPI v1.4, thereby updating Open MPI's embedded copy of the libltdl library. *** More details about this release were sent to the Open MPI user's list: http://www.open-mpi.org/community/lists/users/2009/12/11460.php -- Jeff Squyres jsquy...@cisco.com ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg
Re: [ewg] Re: [ofw] SC'09 BOF - Meeting notes
FWIW: the dealbreaker for me is that we're already at 1.5rc2. By OFED's own rules, new features are not to be allowed. Or you can reset the release clock and target Jan/Feb. Mellanox already has their own OFED distribution -- since there appears to be strong desire to get this stuff released ASAP, is there an issue with releasing it through Mellanox OFED. Then later release it through community OFED in the next go-round? On Nov 23, 2009, at 4:18 AM, Liran Liss wrote: In the past few months of review, the responsibility for rdmaoe addressing was moved to the rdmacm. So, any future addressing enhancements can be confined to the rdmacm module without breaking existing APIs. RFC 3041 deals with static global IP addresses on the Internet, especially for portable devices. rmdaoe allows using link-local GIDs for applications residing on the same subnet, so I don't see the relevance. Note that for rdmacm apps, the intention is to map the IP addresses that were assigned to the host's interfaces. Please see http://www.t11.org/ftp/t11/pub/fc/study/09-543v0.pdf. Regarding multicast, current switches will flood the traffic just as any other non-IP multicast traffic (e.g., fcoe). Using switches that support multicast pruning for additional ethertypes, you can optimize the traffic and achieve the same link utilization as normal IP multicast. In any case, this is not a correctness issue that prohibits experimentation with rdmaoe multicast on any network today. --Liran -Original Message- From: ewg-boun...@lists.openfabrics.org [mailto:ewg-boun...@lists.openfabrics.org] On Behalf Of Roland Dreier Sent: Thursday, November 19, 2009 9:35 PM To: Richard Frank Cc: o...@lists.openfabrics.org; OpenFabrics EWG Subject: Re: [ewg] Re: [ofw] SC'09 BOF - Meeting notes Having lots of testing exposure can help in validating that all the edge cases are handled.. For example -- how is multicast going to interact with IGMP on ethernet switches? How is address resolution going to be done (current patches seem to assume that stateless IPv6 link-local addresses contain the ethernet address, which is not valid if RFC 3041 is used)? etc - R. ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg -- Jeff Squyres jsquy...@cisco.com ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

Can do. Don't forget that we're in SC and US holiday season, though. Do you want me to skip the following weeks: - Nov 16 (SC09) - Nov 23 (week after SC09, Thanksgiving is that Thursday in the US -- US-based personnel may take either the latter half of the week or the full week off) - Dec 21 (week of Christmas; many people may be taking the entire week off) - Dec 28 (week between Christmas an US new year; many people will be taking the entire week off, or companies may be shutting down) That would leave the following meeting dates: - Nov 2 - Nov 9 - Nov 30 - Dec 7 - Dec 14 Is that what you want? I ask because if you take that statement to the extreme, many things in OFED may not qualify. For example, the uDAPL software API is standardized, so I assume it's fine. The iWARP and IB hardware layers are standardized, but are there standardized software APIs? Specifically: the verbs software stack is not standardized by any standards body, is it? (what is the exact definition of standards body, anyway -- does consensus of OFED members count?) These may be naive questions (I don't follow these APIs at all), but is the RDS API standardized? Is SRP? Are the various tools that are shipped in OFED standardized? Re: [ofa-general] RE: [ewg] [PATCH 0/9] RDMAoE - RDMA over Ethernet-- some procedural questions
Understood -- and I'm not debating these questions in light of RDMAoE/ IBoE/whateveroE. I'm asking how tightly these questions have been applied to all the other stacks in OFED. For example, RDS, SRP, and verbs itself. Are any of these published/standardized APIs other than the fact that they're in OFED? What does it mean to have a standard body associated with a proposal? Does associated mean that the proposal/API is a published standard in that standards body? Or some weaker definition? On Jun 16, 2009, at 12:37 PM, Ryan, Jim wrote: Jeff, thanks, I'll try to keep this as brief as possible and offer more offline if anyone wants it: - The bylaws state the requirement for a standards body to be associated with a proposal. It speaks volumes to me that Red Hat has told us -- repeatedly -- that this is bad software engineering, not what the rest of the Linux community does, and has specifically asked us not to do it. But yet we still do. The main objection so far seems to have been but we want to include MPI (the co-development arguments do not make sense for OFED *distribution*). As I mentioned previously I sure that this step will push users from OFED distributions towards vendors packages, like it was before first OFED release. Perhaps it's time that we start discussion of how the every vendor has incompatible/different OFED distributions is far worse than including MPI. As I indicated earlier, we're back to the bad old days of mVAPI. This compatibility stuff is confusing enough for those of us who are in the industry and working with this stuff every day -- can you imagine being a customer just trying to get a bug fix? What will you answer on user's question: How can I install MPI with OFED support ? Will you send user to read 10 pages of MPI Installation FAQ ? :-) Many customers are in the habit of downloading/installing MPI manually, anyway, since they want to be on the bleeding edge of releases (as has been stated on this list). For customers who just want an MPI that works, a simple installation guide, and/or getting the MPI's to distribute binaries, and/or having customers download MPI's from the distros are all viable solutions. In short: these are all solvable problems. More specifically: wasn't OFED created to solve the problem of mVAPI ! = mVAPI != mVAPI? If so, it has failed. There are two obvious solutions (and probably others): 1. Test together and only use the distros to distribute new versions, or 2. Use better packaging such that vendors can *contribute* their own technology without effectively making (potentially incompatible) forks of OFED. -- Jeff Squyres Cisco Systems ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

But that is unrelated to shipping the MPI's in OFED. As has been specified multiple times on this thread, using MPI to test verbs is a Good Thing and it can easily be maintained without distributing MPI in OFED. but it will also improve ease of use for end users. Can you specify how, specifically? Recall that: - Open MPI users get a stripped-down version with several important features disabled - At least one user has chimed in that they install MPI separately from OFED for a variety of reasons (I have seen this at customer sites as well) As DK points out there are continual improvements in MPIs which may depend on bug fixes and/or new features in newer versions of OFED. Identifying a known good combination will be important to most end users, etc. Easy to do in documentation and/or in the technology of the MPI implementations themselves. The verbs API should allow this kind of run-time checking as a matter of course (and it seems to allow it well enough). Additionally -- and your later comments seemed to support it -- possibly the most important combination that needs to work is that of latest OFED + latest MPI, which will continue to work because OFED would be insane to remove MPI from its testing/QA/release process. -- Jeff Squyres Cisco Systems ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

Re: [ofa-general] RE: [ewg] RFC: Do we wish to take MPI out of OFED?
A few clarifications are probably worthwhile at this point. 1. No one is suggesting divorcing MPI from the OFED testing/release cycle. It's obviously a Good Thing (and has been stated multiple times on this thread). It is easy to indicate good combos of MPI and OFED in documentation and web pages. However, most users expect the latest MPI implementation versions to work with the latest version of OFED (which is not unreasonable). Looking for compatibility between older MPI/OFED versions is something that is almost always relegated to googling. 2. The distinction between development and release phases seems to have been blurred in this discussion. The development phase is where MPI's collaborate with verbs developers to test new APIs, functionality, etc. OFED is the final product, not the development phase. Hence, I'm not sure that the point of continual improvements in MPI depend on bug fixes/new features in OFED is relevant. 3. As Doug described, packaging MPI and OFED together actually makes it *harder* for distros. Remember that RHEL and SUSE don't end up using any of the OFED packaging; they essentially use the individual SRPMs. On Jun 5, 2009, at 8:37 AM, John Russo wrote: I agree with DK from OSU. I would also like to mention that keeping MPI packages in OFED helps to test out various new features and functionalities (such as APM and XRC in the past and the new memory registration scheme being discussed now) as they get introduced. Such an integrated approach helps to test out these features at the lower layers as well as at the MPI layer. This process helps to resolve out any bugs with the new features during the testing process itself. It also accelerates the deployment and use of these new features in the community. However, to make the complete OFED release process work smoothly for everybody (vendors, distros, users, etc.) without affecting the release schedule, it is essential that stable MPI packages are added to OFED. This is what we have been doing wrt MVAPICH and MVAPICH2 for the last several years. If the developers of any MPI package do not want it to be a part of the OFED due to any constraints, it should be allowed. However, such an action should not force to remove all MPI packages. From the point of view of MVAPICH and MVAPICH2 packages in OFED, we have been providing stable packages to OFED for the last several years helping the OFED community and would like to continue with this process. I'll state right up front that I'm in favor of removing MPI from OFED. :-) On Jun 2, 2009, at 3:30 PM, Tziporet Koren wrote: Here are some of the reasons for keeping MPI in or out of OFED. Main reasons to take MPI out of OFED: - MPI is not developed under OFA - Need to synchronize between different projects -- This point alone is hugely difficult. OFED has been held up multiple times because of MPI release delays. I would like to stress that the open source MPI implementations are entirely different software projects with minimal overlap of personnel between MPI and OFED. Also, OFED is but one of the stacks that the MPI's support. For example, many Open MPI members don't care about OpenFabrics at all. It has sometimes been difficult to rationalize MPI schedule adjustments because of OFED. - Some customers prefer to install a different MPI version then the one in OFED - Also note that OFED only includes the open source MPI's; it's not a level playing field. - Several of Open MPI's features are disabled in OFED builds (e.g., scheduler / resource manager support), causing customers to re- download / re-build Open MPI anyway. *** This is a fairly important point to us. Main reasons to keep MPI in OFED: - All participants test with the same MPI versions, and when installing OFED it is ensured that MPI will work fine with this version. -- I think we're all convinced that testing OFED with the various MPI implementations is a Good Thing -- nobody is suggesting that we remove that. As discussed on the call, we can certainly all test the same version of the open source MPI's during OFED releases and include this information in the release notes (OFED x.y.z was tested with Open MPI a.b.c.). The Open MPI project would be happy to contribute the MPI Testing Tool (MTT; which itself is also open source) to OFED. The MTT was designed for almost exactly this purpose: a large, distributed set of organizations that all need to test the same versions of MPI and report the results to a central location. The MTT is not specific to Open MPI; it can be used with any MPI implementation. The MTT is essentially an engine to download/install MPI implementations, run a set of MPI tests (e.g., IMB, OSU and others), and then report the results to a central database. FWIW: several OFA members are using MTT internally for their own MPI testing. - Customers convenience in install (no need to go to more sites to get MPI) -- My $0.02 is that this is a dubious point. In installing a production HPC cluster, you're getting 20 pieces of software and installing them together. So if you have to get OFED *and* MPI (i.e., 21 pieces of software), I think it makes little difference. Indeed, as noted above, MPI implementations move at a different speed than OFED, so many customers go install their own MPI's anyway (or, per an above point, need to re-install MPI's to enable features that the OFED packaging disables). I think the biggest issue related to this point is going to be customers asking you *used* to bundle MPI, why don't do anymore? - MPI is an important RDMA ULP and although it is not developed in OFA it is widely used by OFED customers -- This point is actually used as a crutch by the OFA: why develop your own comprehensive performance testing / monitoring tools when you have MPI with all of its tools? Removing MPI may help motivate the OFA to have better networking tools than those provided by a ULP. (before you flame, I admit that this is a minor point, but it is still worth noting -- I've always thought it strange that people use MPI to monitor and test their OF-based networks...) -- Jeff Squyres Cisco Systems ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

Re: [ofa-general] Re: [ewg] /dev/infiniband/rdma_cm not created
Ok, I figured it out. I have some creative /etc/sysconfig/network- script/ifcfg-ib* scripts that may choose to do nothing if no device is present (or some other esoteric, specific-to-jeffs-cluster criteria is met) -- they call exit 0 in this case. This apparently causes the top-level /etc/init.d/openibd to exit (!). I've fixed this (they now never call exit); now everything works as expected. Upon reflection, I can see that this was totally my fault -- ifcfg-* scripts are always sourced and should therefore never call exit. But given that /etc/init.d/openib is sooo complex and has sooo many moving parts, it would be nice if there were a way to track down problems a little more easily; perhaps a verbose setting in /etc/ infiniband/openibd.conf, or somesuch. Indeed, since OFED is targeted at the datacenter, monitors attached to the servers in question and/or serial consoles may not be readily available. Hence, having the ability to drop some verbose output into syslog during boot, for example, might be quite useful to sysadmins/network admins when troubleshooting. Just my $0.02. Thanks for the tips where to look, Woody! On Apr 23, 2009, at 9:28 AM, Moni Shoua wrote: In spec file of openmpi there is a boolean option called ofed. When it is true, among other things, it makes openmpi to depend on mpi-selector. Why not leave it to the user to decide whether to use (and install) mpi-selector or not. This can also create a conflict between mpi-selector that comes with ofed and the one that is already installed. If you remove the %define use_mpi_selector 1 line, then the Open MPI RPM won't automatically register itself with mpi-selector. This could probably be fixed (e.g., only register in %post and %preun if 'which mpi-selector' returns non-empty), but then you can run into ordering issues where if you rpm -ivh .. mpi-selector .. openmpi, there's no guarantee that mpi-selector will be installed first. So Open MPI's RPM could be installed first, and therefore 'which mpi-selector' will be empty, but then mpi-selector will be installed later and Open MPI won't be registered. -- Jeff Squyres Cisco Systems ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

Note that the teleconferences will be switching to WebEx (we were previously using Cisco Meetingplace). *** THE CALL IN NUMBER IS THE SAME, BUT YOU MUST *** HIT 3 TO GO TO WEBEX (vs. hitting 1 to go to Meetingplace). == Additionally, WebEx does not allow me to set the same meeting ID every week. Sorry. The Outlook invite will have dial-in instructions -- per above, you must hit 3 to get to Webex, then type in the Webex meeting ID (in the Outlook invite). It might ask you for an attendee number; just hit # to skip it. Using WebEx gives the possibility of having both audio+web content (sharing someone's desktop, presenting slides, ...whatever). I somewhat doubt that will be useful for EWG calls (unless Tziporet wants to show the bugzilla items as she's going through them...?). I expect most users will just call in as usual. -- Jeff Squyres Cisco Systems ___ ewg mailing list ewg@lists.openfabrics.org http://lists.openfabrics.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ewg

Actually -- I just realized that the March 23 OFED teleconference is the first day of the OF Sonoma event. So I'll cancel that teleconference; you'll get an Outlook cancelation shortly. [ewg] New Open MPI 1.3.1rc4 srpm

[ewg] New Open MPI SRPM
Per request, I have uploaded OMPI v1.3.1rc2 to my space on the openfabrics server and upaded the latest.txt file to point to it. It's taken a little longer to get 1.3.1 out than we planned; some last minute run-time and other bugs showed up last week. Re: [ewg] RE: RHEL 5.3 and OFED 1.4.x
Also, FWIW, it has been discussed (and agreed, I thought) to include OMPI v1.3 in a 1.4.x release. On Jan 22, 2009, at 5:07 PM, Steve Wise wrote: I understand the desire to not release new features in a point release, but at the same time, these features are ready or near ready now. And prior features have definitely been released in point releases. (connectX for example). Another key point is that these features do not need the kernel rebase that will happen with ofed-1.5, which will take months... Just more thoughts. :) Steve. Woodruff, Robert J wrote: I think that we need to discuss this in the EWG meeting. In the past I think that we have agreed to only do bug fixes in point release and not add major new features.
