Subject: Can't open Exchange 5.5 Administrator remotely?

NT 4.0 SP6 + Exchange 5.5 SP4

EX Admin brings up the box to browse for Ex servers. It can find the two
servers and will not open on either one. I also type in the server name and
it comes up with this box:

A connection could not be made to the MS Exchange SErver computer name
The MS Exchange Server does not respond. MS Exchange Directory ID no:
DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM

I am a domain adimin and Exchange admin and am logging into the same
domain. I can log into the server and run Exchange Admin fine. I can
log into my PC and run NT admin utilities. I have searched for articles
concerning this without any luck.

I did find one on TechNet and tried connecting myself to the same
VLAN\switch as the server and it still failed. I loaded ExAdmin on two
other administrators PCs, who also log into the same domain, and it fails
for them as well. We have Win2000 and XP with latest SPacks.

I feel the problem might be caused by a security update or software upgrade,
but I have tried uninstalling some of them to no avail? Any help is
appreciated

Thanks,
Valerie

Exchange 2000 System mailbox

2002-11-29 Thread Gavin Hall
I have recently brought online a replacement Exchange2000 installation to
replace my Exchange5.5 install.

The system is running fine, although I notice the Exchange 2000
Systemmailbox account has over 1,000 items in it. I have seen
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q253/7/84.asp where it
explains how to access it, although I haven't accessed it yet as the article
does say to only access under supervision from PSS!! So my question is,
what does the Systemmailbox do, and more importantly what are all these mail
items doing in there?

Thanks

Gavin

Nope...nothing in the event logs...The install starts and gives a very quick
message on the progress bars saying that setup is finished and then the big
successfully completed splash comes up. It's like there are components
installed on the server already, it detects them, updates what it thinks
needed updating, and finishes. There is an entry in the Add/Remove programs
for exchange. I've tried to remove it but it won't remove. So, I found a KB
article on manually removing exchange, did that but there's really nothing
to remove. There's not even an exchange folder on the server.

Please remember that I already have a production server in the same domain.

Thanks for your help...

I am moving exchange 2k to a new server and am using the procedures
 found at http://www.swinc.com/resource/e2kfaq_appxa.htm. Anyway, I'm
on step 6 which says Install Exchange 2000 and bring it up to the
same service pack and hotfix level as the existing server. At this
point I've installed active directory and let the replication finish.
This new server is installed in the same tree as the production
server. I start the exchange installation, answer the questions, and
the installation starts and finishes without error but Exchange is not
 installed on this computer.

Any ideas why Exchange won't install?

 Thank you,
 Mike Winfrey

Cold Standby Server

2002-11-29 Thread Mike Winfrey
I've looked and looked and found nothing that's really helpful. I have
one exch2k server running on Win2k server with AD installed and am
concerned about disaster recovery. I'd like to build another server

exchange installed on this second server. It just doesn't install.
This second server is a fresh installation of everything and is
installed in AD.

How can I accomplish my desire to have a backup exchange server?

Thanks,

RE: Cold Standby Server

2002-11-29 Thread Chris Scharff
A cold standby server is often not a simple as one might think (e.g.
actually testing failover[1] prior to a production disaster would probably
be an extremely good idea). Depending on ones definition of minimal effort,
you may or may not be pleased with the results.

Not sure why you can't get Exchange installed on this new server as you've
listed no error messages, failure conditions or other data which might shed
light on the problems you are having.

There are a number of high availibility solutions for Exchange listed at
www.mail-resources.com[2] in the web links section. You might investigate
those as well depending on your project requirements.

[1] On a regular basis, and documenting the heck out fo the required steps.

Still not sure why the X.400 connector was used and why the messages where

Still trying to figure out it didn't work normally.

 I have Xch 5.5 (adg-abd-serv1) and added now an Xhg 2000 (adg-abd-xch)
 server for migration.
adg-abd-serv1 used to send mail via x.400 to another xch 5.5 (admsgsrv1).
 I configured a x.400 connector between adg-abd-xch and admsgsrv1 and
removed
the old x.400 connector between adg-abd-serv1 and admsgsrv1.
Now when I send email to an x.400 contact the mail goes out to
adg-abd-serv1
(it's in the same routing group as the new exchange 2000 server) instead
of
 going through the X.400 connector.
I then receive email NDR like:

The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient moved to a
different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address.
Check
the address and try again. The MTS-ID of the original message is...

Why is the x.400 connector not used? When I freeze the queue I can see the
message in the queue going to adg-abd-serv1 and I can see that it has an
X.400 address of my contact showing it's location in my org and not the
 x.400 showing the destination org.

 Any help is appreciate.

GroupShield - alerts problem

I am running Groupshield 5.2 on Exchange 2000.

Since installing the Microsoft patch MS02-062,

and associated reboot, the McAfee Groupshield Anti-Virus Reports
have ceased to be sent to the configured account when a
virus is detected.

Within Groupshield Exchange Manager the relevant Log Manager
entries contain the following:

Component -
C\:program files\mcafee\groupshield exchange\i386\avexch32.exe
Title -
anti-virus service
Description -
failed to submit the alert message

Can anyone suggest a fix to get the reporting working again?
(I could find no useful insight on the Network Associates support site

Re: How do you recalculate the routing table in E2K?

2002-11-29 Thread Uso
Exchange 2000 doesn't have a direct equivalent to Exchange 5.5's recalculate
routing feature because Exchange 2000's link-state routing mechanism
automatically recalculates route and link information to an Exchange server
any time a link state changes. Stopping and restarting the SMTP service, or
any network interruption, on one Exchange server forces other Exchange 2000
servers to recalculate routes to that server. Turning on and turning off the
SMTP, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), and Routing services on a
server causes that server to forget its existing link-state information and
to obtain new routing information from the directory (with updates from
routing group peers). As a result, if you want to clear all routing
information from all servers, you must shut down the SMTP, WMI, and Routing
services on all servers-and you can't restart the first machine's services
until you've shut down the final machine's services

With that procedure I won't do it.

How to set a public folder for moderator use

2002-11-29 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.
I'm trying to figure out how to set up a moderated public folder in outlook 2000.
Running Ex2k, Sp2 native.. Most Q-Articles I've reviewed all refer to Ex5.5. I go
through all the steps in setting up the moderator information, but, get error msg:
Unable to save moderated folder changes. The client was unable to successfully
complete all of the requested operations.

Turns out BTOpenworld have decided to block port 25 for all home plug
and go setups which mine is (I use it mainly for testing purposes). Time
to find a new ISP. As such I am now faced with a new problem. I would
still like to use the GAL of my Exchange 2000 machine (ie all my AD
contacts) but with my POP3 account instead. I can add an Exchange and
POP3 profile OK (which will display the contacts) but when I go to send
messages (via BTOpenworld's SMTP server, which will only allow my
BTOpenworld account to send mail) they seem to just disappear into the
ether. No bounce back message, no delivery. Any ideas?

setting the default SMTP address for a mailbox

2002-11-29 Thread Jean-Claude
Does anyone know how to set a default SMTP address on a mailbox? Our
company has two registered domain name xyz.com and abc.com. We have added
the two SMTP addresses to each mailbox. xyz.com is the old address but is
still in use. abc.com is the new address. The problem is that the emails
sent by our users are going as originating from xyz.com address. We would
the address to say abc.com since we are going to discontinue xyz.com in
the coming months.
Thanks,

2002-11-29 Thread Nikki Peterson
Have you tried clearing out the outlook forms cache?

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q195/7/54.ASP

Close OLK.
Perform a Find for: Frmcache.dat
Delete it from the Find window.
Restart OLK. (A new frmcache.dat file will be created)

Nikki

 Drew,

Thanks. We did that when we rebuilt the calendar.

 Thanks again.

Subject: Illegal operation when deleting a recurring meeting

 Happy Thanksgiving to all,

 Good afternoon. Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 SP4.

I have several users that are receiving Illegal Operation messages when
deleting an occurrence of a recurring meeting. This causes Outlook to
close down. We have reinstalled the client and have rebuilt the
calendar. In this occurrence, I can have the person cancel a recurring
event occurrence and they get an illegal operation from their machine.
But when I go to my machine and sign on as them, I can cancel recurring
 meeting occurrence without any problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't find a think on MS KB.

 Thanks.

 Regards,

2002-11-29 Thread Jean-Claude
I have added a new STMP address and click the button Set as reply
address. So far I have not noticed any changes when the email is send
out. It still uses the old email address instead of the new one.
Thanks

It's a setting in the user's properties on the Address tab.

Subject: setting the default SMTP address for a mailbox

Does anyone know how to set a default SMTP address on a mailbox? Our
company has two registered domain name xyz.com and abc.com. We have added
the two SMTP addresses to each mailbox. xyz.com is the old address but is
still in use. abc.com is the new address. The problem is that the emails
sent by our users are going as originating from xyz.com address. We would
the address to say abc.com since we are going to discontinue xyz.com in
 the coming months.
 Thanks,

Turns out BTOpenworld have decided to block port 25 for all home plug
and go setups which mine is (I use it mainly for testing
 purposes). Time
to find a new ISP. As such I am now faced with a new problem. I would
still like to use the GAL of my Exchange 2000 machine (ie all my AD
contacts) but with my POP3 account instead. I can add an Exchange and
POP3 profile OK (which will display the contacts) but when I
 go to send
messages (via BTOpenworld's SMTP server, which will only allow my
BTOpenworld account to send mail) they seem to just disappear into the
ether. No bounce back message, no delivery. Any ideas?

I'm afraid I can't provide a great deal of informatiuon here since
 there
just isn't any! Basically, one day I have a perfectly working mail
system then suddenly it stops receiving incoming mail. Outgoing is
absolutely fine. There is nothing in the event viewer to suggest a
problem and all DNS records appear to be OK. I have three domain names
housed on the same box, bondyweb.com, simonbond.com and
sacredlondon.co.uk. Bondyweb.com is the main one that is used and I
 have
temporarily forwarded this to another address. However, the other
addresses have the same problem and I have left these pointing to my
exchange box for testing purposes. Any slightest hint of a suggestion
 is
 more than welcome.

What I said. So, if you know the answer, why did you ask the question?

Exchange 2000 doesn't have a direct equivalent to Exchange 5.5's
recalculate routing feature because Exchange 2000's link-state routing
mechanism automatically recalculates route and link information to an
Exchange server any time a link state changes. Stopping and restarting
the SMTP service, or any network interruption, on one Exchange server
forces other Exchange 2000 servers to recalculate routes to that server.
Turning on and turning off the SMTP, Windows Management Instrumentation
(WMI), and Routing services on a server causes that server to forget its
existing link-state information and to obtain new routing information
from the directory (with updates from routing group peers). As a result,
if you want to clear all routing information from all servers, you must
shut down the SMTP, WMI, and Routing services on all servers-and you
can't restart the first machine's services until you've shut down the
 final machine's services

With that procedure I won't do it.
